WTC 2025-27 Points Table [UPDATED]: Australia stays on top with Ashes Test series win over England; India below Pakistan in rankings

Australia have officially reaffirmed their status as the king of the red-ball format, clinching a dominant 4-1 Ashes series victory over England after a hard-fought five-wicket win in the Sydney Test on January 8, 2026.

Australia’s dominating victory over England in the final Ashes 2025-27 test in Sydney

While England’s young prodigy Jacob Bethell delayed the inevitable with a breathtaking maiden century of 154, the sheer relentless depth of the Australian side eventually broke through to secure the final match of the summer. The victory at the SCG was not just about the historic urn but also served as an emotional farewell to veteran opener Usman Khawaja, who bowed out of international cricket on a winning note. This series triumph marks a significant milestone for stand-in skipper Steve Smith and his veteran attack, who successfully navigated a minor wobble on the final morning to reach their 160-run target post-lunch. With this result, the curtain falls on a grueling yet captivating Ashes campaign that leaves Australia at the pinnacle of the cricketing world and England searching for answers after their sixth defeat of the cycle.

Australia’s iron grip on the WTC 2025-27 summit

The 4-1 series scoreline has significantly padded Australia’s lead at the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 standings, as they begin the 2026 calendar year with an imposing points percentage (PCT) of 87.50. Having won seven of their eight matches in this cycle, with their only blemish being the Boxing Day collapse at the MCG, the Aussies have established a formidable cushion between themselves and the chasing pack.

This clinical consistency across two major series (a 3-0 sweep of the West Indies and this 4-1 Ashes victory) makes them the overwhelming favorites to secure a spot in the 2027 Final. For a team that has been a mainstay in WTC finals, this latest surge proves that their aging core still possesses the tactical discipline and hunger to dominate the world’s most elite competition.

England’s descent and the WTC 2025-27 mid-table logjam

In stark contrast, England’s Bazball era is facing a statistical crisis in the WTC standings, as they remain languishing in 7th place with a dismal PCT of 31.66. Despite showing glimpses of brilliance from players like Jacob Bethell and Joe Root, Ben Stokes‘ side has now suffered six losses in just 10 matches, effectively ending their realistic hopes of reaching the championship final.

Meanwhile, the mid-table has become a crowded battleground; New Zealand (77.78) and South Africa (75.00) currently hold the second and third spots, respectively, but have played far fewer games. India finds themselves in a precarious 6th position with a 48.15 PCT after a mixed run of form, meaning the subcontinental giants will likely need a near-perfect record in their upcoming home and away assignments to climb back into contention.

WTC 2025-27 standings: India and the chasing pack

The final day at the SCG has crystalized a stratified leaderboard where India currently sits in 6th place with 52 points from nine matches, struggling to find momentum under the leadership of Shubman Gill. Ahead of them, the top five is rounded out by Sri Lanka (66.67) in fourth and Pakistan (50.00) in fifth, both of whom remain in a waiting game as their schedules ramp up later in the year.

At the bottom of the table, Bangladesh occupies the 8th spot with a PCT of 16.67, while the West Indies are rooted to the base in 9th with a mere 4.17 PCT after a winless run of eight matches. This updated hierarchy highlights a massive gulf between Australia and the rest of the world, leaving a desperate scrap for the second qualification spot among five nations separated by fewer than 30 percentage points.

Pos Team Matches Played Won Lost Drawn Points PCT (%)
1 Australia 8 7 1 0 84 87.50
2 New Zealand 3 2 0 0 28 77.78
3 South Africa 4 3 1 0 36 75.00
4 Sri Lanka 2 1 0 1 16 66.67
5 Pakistan 2 1 1 0 12 50.00
6 India 9 4 4 0 52 48.15
7 England 10 3 6 0 38 31.67

ED raids I-PAC: Mamata reaches chief’s house, hits out at Amit Shah; asks ‘Is this home minister’s job?’ | India News

ED raids I-PAC: Mamata reaches chief’s house, hits out at Amit Shah; asks ‘Is this home minister's job?’

NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday accused the Centre of holding political vendetta, alleging that central agencies were being misused ahead of elections, after the Enforcement Directorate carried out searches at various locations, including the residence of IPAC chief Pratik Jain.Reacting sharply to the action, Banerjee questioned the role of the ED and Union home minister Amit Shah. She claimed that party documents and data were being seized under the pretext of investigations. She also alleged that voter names were being deleted in West Bengal during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision exercise, linking the moves to the election process.

‘Will Rid Bengal Of Infiltrators’: Amit Shah Slams Mamata Banerjee’s 14-Year Rule, Sounds Poll Bugle

“..Is it the duty of the ED, Amit Shah to collect the party’s hard disk, candidate list?… The nasty, naughty Home Minister who cannot protect the country and is taking away all my party documents. What will be the result if I raid the BJP party office? ” she questioned.“On one side, they are deleting the names of all the voters by carrying out the SIR in West Bengal…Because of the elections, they are collecting all the information about my party…” she added. The BJP hit back at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of interfering in a central agency probe. Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, termed Banerjee’s visit to the residence of I-PAC chief Pratik Jain during an ED raid as “unconstitutional” and “direct interference” in the investigation.Adhikari said the Enforcement Directorate should take action against the chief minister, alleging that her presence, along with that of the Kolkata police commissioner, was unethical and improper while the search was underway at Jain’s Loudon Street residence. He also pointed out that I-PAC manages the IT cell of the Trinamool Congress and drew parallels with a previous incident, claiming that Banerjee had similarly visited the then Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar’s official residence during a CBI raid. This comes after the Enforcement Directorate conducted raid at houses of IT chiefs of various political parties including TMC’s IPAC chief Prateek Jain. The raids were carried out at 15 location in connection with a fake government job scam allegedly run by an organised gang that duped people by promising jobs, officials said.

‘Dhurandhar’ box office day 35 (LIVE): Ranveer Singh starrer nears Rs 790 crore after lowest fifth Wednesday; ‘Ikkis’ and ‘TMMTMTM’ fade | Hindi Movie News

'Dhurandhar' box office day 35 (LIVE): Ranveer Singh starrer nears Rs 790 crore after lowest fifth Wednesday; ‘Ikkis’ and ‘TMMTMTM’ fade

After spending more than a month in theatres, ‘Dhurandhar’ has added yet another feather to its cap by registering the biggest fifth weekend ever for a Hindi film. The Aditya Dhar directorial has also managed to remain consistent all through and remain unaffected by other big releases like ‘Avatar Fire And Ash’ and films like ‘Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri’, ‘Ikkis’ which released in weeks after. The Ranveer Singh starrer pulled in an impressive Rs. 33.25 crore net over the weekend, pushing its total Hindi net collection beyond Rs. 781 crore in just 33 days. With this momentum, the film is now closing in on ‘Pushpa 2’s long-standing Hindi net record of Rs. 812 crore and is expected to surpass the mark during its sixth weekend, cementing its place at the very top.‘Dhurandhar’ has also carved out a rare distinction in box office history. Unlike other members of the Rs 1000-crore club, which depended on pan-India, multi-language releases to inflate their numbers, this espionage drama has achieved its staggering figures purely through its Hindi version. That achievement sets it apart as a one-of-a-kind solo-language blockbuster.

Dhurandhar’s Success Forces Bollywood To Rewrite Rules

While several big-ticket films have enjoyed explosive openings only to witness sharp drops after the initial weeks, ‘Dhurandhar’ has defied that pattern entirely. The Bollywood spy action thriller has displayed unprecedented consistency, continuing to earn strongly even in its fifth week. With its iron grip on ticket counters, the film has already sealed its status as an all-time blockbuster and is poised to chase a few more milestones before wrapping up its theatrical run. After making a good Rs. 12.75 crore on fifth Sunday, the film saw a huge drop on Monday, January 5 when the holiday period ended and made Rs. 4.75 crore. On fifth Tuesday, day 32, it made a similar number. On Wednesday, day 34, it saw a drop further, collecting Rs. 4.25 crore. On day 35, which is 5th Thursday, till afternoon, the film has collected Rs. 0.37 crore. The total collection of ‘Dhurandhar’ is now Rs. 786.37 crore. Newlands, cloaked in an eerie mist and framed by shimmering floodlights, felt like a scene straight out of an Alfred Hitchcock thriller.MI Cape Town’s title defence was in similar suspense. Winless after five matches, their SA20 Season 4 campaign was hanging by a thread. The equation was stark: 39 runs needed off 19 balls. One misstep and it was all over.

Out of the shadows walked Jason Smith, taking centre stage. Tall, muscular, inked forearms visible under the lights, he looked every bit the part. But could he shoulder the pressure of an entire season resting on seven deliveries?Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!“Yeah, obviously there was a bit of pressure coming into this game. We knew it was a must-win for us,” Smith admitted later. His answer came instantly. Smith dispatched his very first ball, a low full toss, deep into the Newlands night sky.“To be fair, I actually wasn’t expecting that for the first ball,” he said. “Not often you get a full toss and I feel like sometimes a full toss is actually the hardest ball to get away.

“But I’ll definitely take that to get me going and I think it helped me.”Richard Gleeson had been Joburg Super Kings’ hero just nights earlier at the Wanderers, nailing yorkers in a dramatic Super Over. On Tuesday evening, though, Smith had the Englishman firmly in his sights. He had already watched MI Cape Town teammate Nicholas Pooran dismantle Gleeson earlier, the Trinbago superstar launching three colossal sixes in a single over, one of them crashing into the top tier of the Members’ Stand.

“I think Nicky P from the second ball set the tone and it was just unreal to see him striking the ball so cleanly,” Smith said.Buoyed by that confidence, Smith shifted gears. Spotting the slower ball early, he stood tall and launched it onto the Oaks grass banks. Despite steady drizzle, the Newlands faithful sensed something special. The very next ball confirmed it. Smith creamed Gleeson over wide long-on, the ball soaring into the second tier of the Presidents Pavilion. The roar echoed all the way down Campground Road.“Yeah, I think it’s really important that they actually stayed,” Smith said. “We were quite surprised when we pulled up to the stadium and people were still coming despite the rain.

“We always appreciate and are grateful for the support. The Newlands faithful are always kind to us and we’re glad we could entertain them tonight.”Smith’s blitz ended the next ball, caught on the boundary while attempting another mighty heave. But his 22 off just seven balls had done the damage.Karim Janat and Corbin Bosch completed the chase with four balls to spare, keeping MI Cape Town’s campaign alive. More than that, Smith’s cameo offered a glimpse of exactly why Proteas coach Shukri Conrad backed the former Wynberg Boys’ High School prodigy with a spot at next month’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

“I think I was under a bit of pressure and that’s only natural,” Smith said. “I’m the type of person who’s just trying to enjoy my cricket at the moment. Noise will be noise and it’s what anyone makes of it.“I feel like I’ve been hitting the ball quite sweetly. Long may it continue. I don’t think I’m going to change anything. If it works, it works.”Smith also received a ringing endorsement from Nicholas Pooran.

Do you think Jason Smith has the potential to become a star player in T20 cricket?

“For him, the most important thing is to learn as fast as possible,” the West Indies T20 great said.“He’s just been selected for the World Cup and he’s heading into India, where conditions are really favourable for him with a lot of spin.“He has everything to do well in those conditions. There’s a lot of talent there and we’re really happy to see him smashing it for us. Our job is to give him the freedom to express himself without pressure.”

No return of gundaraj in Ulhasnagar, rule of law will prevail: Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis | Thane News

ULHASNAGAR: As campaigning picked up pace for the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) elections, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday addressed a major public rally in the city, delivering a strong message on law and order, stalled development, and long-pending civic issues.Speaking at the election rally, Fadnavis adopted a firm tone, warning against any return of criminal dominance in Ulhasnagar. Without naming anyone directly, he took an apparent dig at Shiv Sena’s local alliance partner, Team Omie Kalani, which has a controversial past. “No one should even think of bringing back gundaraj to Ulhasnagar. We will not allow it. Only the rule of law will prevail here,” the Chief Minister asserted, adding that he knows how to deal strictly with those who attempt to disturb law and order.Highlighting Ulhasnagar’s developmental lag, Fadnavis said the city, despite reflecting India’s social and cultural diversity, has failed to achieve the growth it deserved over the last three decades. “Ulhasnagar became a Municipal Corporation in 1996, but in the last 30 years, it has not progressed like other cities. We all know the reasons—the governments and municipal administrations of that time,” he said.Calling his government an agent of transformation, Fadnavis urged voters to give the BJP an opportunity to bring change. “Our government stands for transformation. Give us one chance, and we will transform Ulhasnagar,” he declared. The Chief Minister also spoke about integrating Ulhasnagar into the broader development of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. He pointed out that projects worth ₹4.5 lakh crore have been implemented across the MMR through MMRDA and assured that Ulhasnagar would now be brought into the mainstream of this large-scale development.Announcing major infrastructure initiatives, Fadnavis said the proposed metro corridor from Kalyan to Ambernath would pass through Ulhasnagar, providing long-awaited metro connectivity to the city.Addressing a long-standing civic concern, he spoke about the large number of old and unauthorised buildings in Ulhasnagar. “Several attempts were made in the past to legalise these structures, but they failed. We will bring a new policy to legalise old unauthorised constructions so that people can finally get ownership rights to their homes, while ensuring that no new illegal constructions come up,” he said.He further assured residents that a new Development Plan (DP) would be prepared to upgrade the city’s poor road infrastructure. “Our goal is to build an advanced Ulhasnagar,” the Chief Minister concluded. With strong assurances on law and order and ambitious promises on infrastructure and housing, Fadnavis’ Ulhasnagar rally has given fresh momentum to the municipal election campaign, setting the stage for a closely watched political contest in the city.

‘No World Cup at the cost of national dignity’: Bangladesh draws firm line, pushes ICC to shift matches to Sri Lanka | Cricket News

File Pic: Bangladesh fans cheer for their team in the stands. (AP Photo)

NEW DELHI: Bangladesh have hardened their stance on playing the ICC T20 World Cup in India, with the government making it clear that participation cannot come at the expense of national dignity or the security of its cricketers. On Wednesday, Bangladesh government’s sports advisor Asif Nazrul said Dhaka would make a strong case before the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate Bangladesh’s matches to co-host Sri Lanka, accusing the global body of failing to grasp the seriousness of the situation.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!Nazrul’s comments came after a meeting with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) directors, held in the wake of an ICC letter responding to Bangladesh’s formal request for a venue change. The request followed recent controversy involving Mustafizur Rahman, after the BCCI asked Kolkata Knight Riders to release the Bangladesh pacer, triggering fresh security concerns.

Bangladesh seek T20 WC match shift from India after Mustafizur Rahman’s IPL exit

“We sat together with the BCB directors – Bulbul bhai, Faruque bhai and everyone else. Today we discussed the situation and we all agreed that Bangladesh earned qualification for the T20 World Cup through hard work. We are a cricket-crazy nation and we definitely want to play,” Nazrul told reporters. However, he underlined that participation could not come at any cost. “We do not want to play the World Cup at the cost of national humiliation, at the cost of the security of our cricketers, spectators and journalists, or at the cost of the country’s dignity,” he said. “After reading the letter we received from the ICC today, it felt to us that they have not fully understood the serious security situation that has developed in India for Bangladeshi cricketers.

Do you think the concerns raised by Bangladesh regarding security are justified?

Nazrul went further, describing the issue as one that goes beyond safety. “To me, it does not feel like only a security issue – it feels like an issue of national humiliation as well. When the Indian cricket board itself is telling a team that they cannot provide security to this player and asking them to drop him, that alone shows there is no environment in India where it is safe to play.”Laying out Bangladesh’s position in unequivocal terms, he said: “We want to play cricket, we want to play the World Cup, and since there is another host country, Sri Lanka, we want to play there. We are firm on this position. On the question of Bangladesh’s security, honour and dignity, there will be no compromise.”Nazrul confirmed that a detailed letter would be sent to the ICC shortly, after which Bangladesh would decide its next course of action based on the response.BCB president Aminul Islam echoed the government’s concerns, stressing that security worries extend beyond players. “There is a large group involved – journalists, sponsors and spectators. Ensuring security for everyone is not possible for the board alone,” he said, adding that reports claiming the ICC had already ruled out Sri Lanka were “propaganda”.

Manipur violence: SC orders forensic probe into ‘available voice recordings’ of ex-Manipur CM Biren Singh | India News

Manipur violence: SC orders forensic probe into 'available voice recordings' of ex-Manipur CM Biren Singh

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered a full forensic examination of a controversial 48-minute audio recording that allegedly shows former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh‘s involvement in the 2023 ethnic violence. The court directed the National Forensic Science University (NFSU) in Gandhinagar to analyze both the complete audio and Singh’s admitted voice samples, with results to be submitted in a sealed cover, as reported by PTI.“The entire 48 minutes of the conversation in question along with the admitted voice recordings of the former Manipur CM are available… All the voice recordings furnished to the respondents by the learned counsel for the petitioner shall also be included therewith and forwarded to the National Forensic Science University Gandhinagar,” ordered the bench ordered. The case, which has been listed about 10 times, gained new momentum when lawyer Prashant Bhushan, representing the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights (KOHUR) Trust, presented the complete transcript. The state government, through Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, only recently received the full recording. This fresh examination comes after earlier controversy when the NFSU initially gave a clean chit, claiming the audio clips were tampered with. The court had expressed concern in December that only selected portions were previously analysed instead of the complete recording. The petition alleges that Biren Singh played a key role in violence against the Kuki-Zo community. According to lawyer Bhushan, the recorded conversation suggests state machinery’s involvement in the ethnic clashes that killed over 260 people and displaced thousands since May 2023.The violence erupted after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ protested the Manipur High Court’s order on Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status. Singh, who resigned as chief minister in February 2024 amid political pressure, is accused by KOHUR of orchestrating violence against Kuki-dominated areas.

Ashes 2025-26 [WATCH]: Australia veteran Usman Khawaja gets a Guard of Honour in his farewell game as emotions run high on Day 5 of Sydney Test

The Ashes 2025-26 series reached a poignant and dramatic conclusion on January 8, 2026, at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). While Australia had already secured the urn, the final day of the fifth Test was heavy with emotion as it marked the international retirement of veteran opener Usman Khawaja. Chasing a tricky target of 160 on a deteriorating surface, Australia overcame a spirited English fightback to secure a five-wicket victory, sealing the series with a definitive 4-1 scoreline. Despite the loss, England found a silver lining in the emergence of young Jacob Bethell, whose marathon second-innings knock ensured the series went down to the final afternoon in Sydney.

A farewell fit for a legend: Usman Khawaja’s guard of honour

The final morning was defined by a touching show of sportsmanship as the England team formed a guard of honor for Usman Khawaja. As the 39-year-old walked out to bat for the last time in his Baggy Green, the SCG erupted in a standing ovation for the local hero. In a career that began on this very ground in 2011, Khawaja’s impact as Australia’s first Muslim Test cricketer was acknowledged by captain Ben Stokes, who personally shook his hand before play resumed. Though his final innings was brief, dismissed for six by Josh Tongue after chopping onto his stumps, the veteran left the field to another raucous reception, concluding an 88-Test journey marked by resilience and grace.

Australia’s dominance and England’s grit in the Ashes 2025-26

The series as a whole reflected Australia’s relentless clinical edge, though England’s late-series resurgence prevented a total whitewash. After dominant victories in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, the Australians appeared untouchable before a chaotic, two-day shootout in Melbourne gave England a four-wicket consolation win. The final Test in Sydney encapsulated the shifting dynamics: Joe Root’s first-innings 160 and Jacob Bethell’s heroic 154 in the second innings put Australia under immense pressure. However, the hosts’ depth proved too strong, with Travis Head (Player of the Match for his first-innings 163) and Mitchell Starc (Player of the Series with 31 wickets) consistently seizing the decisive moments.

Earlier, speaking to TNT Sports after Day 4, Sir Alastair Cook had predicted that a target of 160 was ‘defended able’ if England could strike early and remove Travis Head. His prophecy nearly came true as Josh Tongue ripped through the Australian top order on Day 5, reducing the hosts to 92/3 and eventually 121/5. While England did manage to remove Head (29) and Khawaja (6) cheaply, an unbeaten 40-run partnership between Alex Carey and Cameron Green eventually steadied the nerves. Carey hit the winning runs off Will Jacks, ensuring that while the series ended 4-1, the final day in Sydney was a fitting tribute to both a retiring legend and a competitive Ashes summer.
