Mumbai: The city has seen a rise in crimes against women (up 13%) and children (up 7%) in 2025 from 2024, while cyber crime has dipped 5%, Mumbai Crime Reports for 2025, released on Monday, show.The report has highlighted a significant increase of 55% in snatching incidents compared to 2024, underlining a rise in street crime. Police have introduced a new classification system, specifically categorising mobile snatching and bag lifting incidents, considering the high value of stolen gadgets that fall under the ‘snatching’ category.

At 4,825, official data showed a 5% fall in cyber crime cases compared to 5,087 in 2024, prompting concerns of burking or under-reporting. Cyber experts, however, said the official number may reflect only 20% of the cyber complaints that police receive in a year.Police say reasons for the rise involve a complex interplay of socio-economic factors, urbanisation, and improved reporting. Motives for street and violent crimes often involve monetary gain, personal feuds, or the influence of drugs and alcohol.Overall, rise in reported street crime is a multi-faceted issue rooted in urban development challenges and improved transparency in the justice system, police said. This categorisation of street crime now also includes cases under the Indian Penal Code or Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for illegal parking, obstruction to traffic, rash driving, and ‘negligent conduct in public’ (by hawkers using coal/gas cylinders on roads).Joint police commissioner (law and order) Satyanarayan Choudhary said the registration of cases in several categories including murder, rape, extortion, snatching has increased, but he said detection has also kept pace. All cases in the ‘serious’ categories have 100% detection rates, he added. By Dec-end, deputy police commissioners of different zones in the city had each organised 4-5 gatherings in community halls to return stolen property to complainants. The material recovered and returned at each function included gold ornaments, mobiles, other gadgets worth crores.Choudhary said other categories like property-related crimes have shown a drop, which includes robbery (by 32%), house break-ins (by up to 40%), and motor vehicle thefts by 11%, and recovery in these categories has also improved. “Recovery percentage in all property heads together increased 5%,” he added.RTI activist Jeetendra Ghadge said more police presence on the ground and a robust CCTV camera network are among reasons for the improved scenario, adding these contributed to a reduction to violent crimes as well.Former director general of police Praveen Dixit said street crime can be curbed further by involving communities in providing intel. He said areas where shops selling jewellery, watches, electronics and banks are located need CCTVs, alarms and armed guards.Dixit said police must undertake more nakabandis to track vehicles which are stolen or misused. He also said regular physical verification of persons with records of snatching and robbing needs to be ensured using techniques such as AI.The city also showed a 5% dip in cyber crime cases in 2025 — from 5,087 in 2024 to 4,825 the next year. Overall, as data shows, crime cases reported in Mumbai rose by 21% in 2025, with 64,012 cases compared with 52,718 in 2024. The police report said case detection also increased by 7% from 74% in 2024 to 81% in 2025.Meanwhile, cyber fraud statistics revealed a surge in investment-related fraud, with most linked to share market fraud schemes where investors were promised high returns in short periods. Credit card frauds have dipped, while increases were seen in insurance scams, unauthorised data access, explicit content, system breaches, fraudulent websites, employment scams and email deception.

He, along with his family, is staying at a hotel in Tangmarg and visiting nearby locations. “Most people come to Kashmir in summers but we wanted to see snow. So we chose winter. I don’t regret it even though locals say there has been less snowfall this year,” he said.His wife said she was seeing a frozen waterfall for the first time in her life. “We were not sure whether the children would enjoy winter visit to Kashmir, but it turned out to be a very good decision,” she said. “We will stay two more days and hope to see fresh snowfall.”Several key tourist sites, including Drung, were shut after the Pahalgam terror attack as part of heightened security measures. They come specifically for this activity. I consider it as a positive development and I hope it will give wide publicity to Kashmir’s tourism sector,” Shah said.During the winter season, local entrepreneur and veteran skier Billa Majeed Bakshi, with a fleet of two helicopters, has been ferrying tourists to the breathtaking Sunshine Peak, at an altitude of 14,000 feet, from the Gulmarg bowl for the past two years. Bakshi said the launch of heli-skiing this winter will boost tourism and attract high-spending skiers to Gulmarg.Director of tourism, Syed Qamar Sajad, also said the steady tourist inflow shows growing confidence in Kashmir as a winter destination. A US federal court in Chicago on Monday began hearing a second damages trial against Boeing over the fatal 2019 crash of an Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX aircraft, as a Canadian plaintiff sought compensation for the loss of multiple family members in the tragedy.The case has been filed by Manant Vaidya, whose sister Kosha Vaidya and parents Pannagesh and Hansini Vaidya were among the 157 people killed when Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed in March 2019. Vaidya also lost his brother-in-law and two young nieces in the incident, AP reported.Jury selection in the case is expected to begin on Monday, with opening statements likely on Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday, according to court proceedings.“It is hard to believe that my entire family was wiped out in an instant incident in such a horrific way,” Vaidya said in a statement published on the website of his attorneys at Clifford Law Firm. “I still cry and my wife, Hiral, still cries when we think of the horror of the last moments of our loved ones’ lives.”The Vaidya family, which lived in Canada, was travelling to Kenya, the homeland of Kosha Vaidya, at the time of the crash.Relatives of Vaidya’s brother-in-law and nieces had filed a separate lawsuit against Boeing, which was settled out of court in July 2025.The Ethiopian Airlines crash followed a similar fatal accident involving a Lion Air 737 MAX aircraft in Indonesia in October 2018. Together, the two crashes claimed 346 lives and led to the worldwide grounding of the 737 MAX fleet. Investigations linked both incidents to the aircraft’s Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), a flight-stabilising software.Boeing has acknowledged responsibility for the crashes and issued apologies to the victims’ families.“Boeing is deeply sorry for the losses suffered by the families,” a company spokesperson said, adding that the company is committed to “fully and fairly compensate” the victims and has “accepted legal responsibility for the accidents.”“While we have resolved the vast majority of these claims through settlements, families are also entitled to pursue their claims through damages trials in court, and we respect their right to do so,” the spokesperson said.The trial comes weeks after a US jury in the same Chicago courthouse ordered Boeing to pay $28.45 million in damages to the family of an Indian victim of the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines crash.
