Rare move: BJP unites with Congress to snatch Maharashtra civic body from Shiv Sena — and then the suspensions | Mumbai News

The Congress has suspended all its municipal councillors in Ambernath, along with the block president of the area, after they decided to align with the BJP-led Ambernath Vikas Aghadi to secure power in the civic body.

MUMBAI: The Congress has suspended all its municipal councillors in Ambernath, along with the block president of the area, after they decided to align with the BJP-led Ambernath Vikas Aghadi to secure power in the civic body.Despite ideological differences, local leaders of the BJP and Congress came together in Ambernath along with other parties to sideline the single-largest party, the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction).

BMC Becomes Mega Battleground As Thackerays Reunite And Alliances Shift Ahead Of Civic Wars 2026

This is not a good thing: CongressVice President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Ganesh Patil, wrote a letter to the Ambernath Congress block president, Pradeep Patil, communicating the party’s decision. The letter stated, “We have fought elections on Congress symbol and we won 12 seats, but without informing the state leadership or the state office, you have done alliance with BJP and this has come to our knowledge through media sources. This is not a good thing, so as per instructions by the state president, Harshwardhan, you are being suspended from the party.”The suspension underscores growing tensions within the Congress over local-level alliances that contradict the party’s stated ideological position, particularly as civic elections approach in major urban centres across Maharashtra.

Not acceptable: Devendra FadnavisMeanwhile, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has conveyed his strong displeasure over such local-level political arrangements and has asked BJP units to end their alliances with the AIMIM in Akot and with the Congress in Ambernath.“Alliance with Congress and AIMIM is not acceptable. It will have to be broken,” he said. Here’s what happenedThe political standoff took a new turn on Tuesday when the BJP and Congress, traditional rivals, joined hands in a rare local-level alliance to keep the Shiv Sena out of power in one of its strongholds, which falls within the parliamentary constituency of MP Shrikant Shinde. In the municipal elections held on December 20, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena emerged as the single largest party with 27 seats in the 60-member council, falling four short of a majority. The BJP won 14 seats, the Congress secured 12, Ajit Pawar–led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won four, and two independents were elected. The third partner in the BJP-Congress combine, named the Ambernath Vikas Aghadi, is the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP. The Shiv Sena suffered a setback in the municipal president’s election, where its candidate Manisha Walekar lost to BJP’s Tejashree Karanjule Patil. The alliance between political rivals has taken party cadres by surprise, particularly as elections approach in larger cities such as Mumbai and Thane. BJP sources said local leaders had been authorised to take decisions in municipal polls, while a Congress state spokesperson said “no decision has been taken so far”.BJP corporator Abhijit Karanjule Patil has been appointed group leader of the Ambernath Vikas Aghadi, which comprises BJP councillors along with members of the Congress and the Ajit Pawar–led NCP.Speaking to TOI, Patil said the BJP had fought the elections against corruption and intimidation under the Shiv Sena’s long rule in the civic body. “Our objective was to free the administration from fear and corruption and to ensure development in Ambernath. Keeping that in mind, we formed this alliance,” he said. While the BJP secured the post of municipal president, it lacked the numbers to govern independently. Under municipal council rules, the president’s powers are similar to those of a mayor, but decisions and resolutions must be approved by a majority vote in the general body. To bridge this gap, the BJP initiated talks with opposition parties at the local level, culminating in the formation of the Ambernath Vikas Aghadi on Tuesday.According to party leaders, the alliance currently includes 14 BJP corporators, a BJP-backed municipal president, 12 Congress councillors, four from the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, and one independent, taking the coalition’s strength to 32 and crossing the majority mark. The Congress state leadership said “no formal proposal” for an alliance had been received, though the local tie-up had already been announced. The development has drawn sharp criticism from the Shiv Sena, which termed the alliance an “unethical and opportunistic arrangement”. Sena MLA from Ambernath, Balaji Kinikar, said that while the BJP campaigns nationally for a “Congress-free India”, it had strengthened the Congress at the municipal level to retain power. He alleged that talks had been held with BJP leaders, but the party opted to align with Congress instead.Several attempts to contact the Congress’s Ambernath city president Pradeep Patil were unsuccessful. A Congress spokesperson said that in Ambernath, the choices were either to align with the BJP, the Shinde faction, or abstain from voting, adding that no formal proposal for an alliance had been received.

ISL to kick off on Feb 14 as cornered clubs say yes to top league | Goa News

The Super Cup was the last competitive match for top-tier clubs as the ISL has seen no action since April last year

Panaji: The sports ministry and the All India Football Federation (AIFF) turned the tables on top-tier clubs during a joint meeting in the Capital on Tuesday, leaving them with no choice but agree to take part in this edition of the Indian Super League (ISL).Sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya later announced that the ISL will kick off on Feb 14 with all 14 teams taking part. When clubs headed to the Capital at short notice — summoned individually through a phone call late on Monday night by AIFF deputy secretary general M Satyanarayan — they were expecting to hear the proposal, return home, study and then consult owners. Instead, they were told time was running out and they had to say “yes or no” on Tuesday itself.“We had no choice to decide whether the (short-term) proposal makes sense,” said one club official who had to hurriedly call the club owner and inform him of the latest developments.Consistent in their stand that they are taking part in the top league, whatever the format and financial implications, Jamshedpur FC were the first to provide an email confirmation, followed by the likes of Punjab FC, East Bengal, NorthEast United, Mohammedan Sporting and Inter Kashi. Later, Delhi SC Bengaluru FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant came on board. Five clubs — Kerala Blasters, Chennaiyin FC, Mumbai City, FC Goa and Odisha FC — needed time to speak with their owners and reluctantly agreed.ISL clubs were also taken aback with the change in format. While most were in favour of a single-leg centralised format, AIFF proposed a single leg home and away structure for the current season, estimated to cost ₹24.3 crore. AIFF said a single leg centralised format will cost Rs 38 crore, adding to the cost. The ISL will have a total of 91 matches with all 14 teams playing each other once. Clubs have to pay Rs 1 crore each as franchise fee.As per the constitution, the top league will have principles of promotion and relegation, but AIFF is likely to approach the Supreme Court for a one-year relaxation, given that it will be a truncated league.A similar single leg home-and-away format has been mooted for I-League (11 teams, 55 matches) too. Clubs, though, are likely to be given an option of choosing an additional champions (six teams) and relegation (five teams) structure, after the conclusion of the single-leg league.“Home and away format is beneficial for clubs, as it allows them to reconnect with their fan base, encouraging higher stadium attendance and giving supporters the opportunity to watch their teams compete and perform in their own cities,” AIFF said in its proposal. “Hosting home matches significantly enhances sponsor visibility and activation opportunities at the local level, thereby strengthening club–sponsor engagement. Clubs will also have the opportunity to generate gate revenues, contributing to improved financial sustainability.”In a single-leg home and away Swiss-system tournament format, the home and away games are decided by lots with clubs playing 6-7 games either at home or away.“Some clubs in the north and Mumbai City have problems with their home venues, so we will allot venue-ready teams with seven home games and six away,” said one official. AIFF expects at least eight of the 14 clubs to have their home venues ready in time for the ISL kick off next month.AIFF will now write to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and seek a one-time exemption for its inability to conduct 24 league matches for each team, a mandatory requirement to qualify for continental competitions. FC Goa have already qualified for the AFC Champions League Two playoff, after winning the Super Cup last month. The ISL champion qualifies for the group stages of ACL2, Asian football’s second-tier club competition.

Lock-in expiry hits Meesho shares: Stock slips 5% – why brokers are still optimistic?

Lock-in expiry hits Meesho shares: Stock slips 5% - why brokers are still optimistic?

E-commerce platform Meesho’s shares dropped by 5 per cent to Rs 173.20 on Wednesday on the BSE after a one-month lock-in period ended. This made 110 million shares, representing 2 per cent of the company’s equity, available for trading. Despite this dip, major brokerages remain positive about Meesho’s future growth potential. The stock, which is still trading 56 per cent above its initial public offering (IPO) price of Rs 111, has come down from its post-listing peak of Rs 254. Meesho’s market debut on December 10 was impressive, with the stock listing at Rs 162 and closing 53 per cent higher on day one. However, brokers have maintained a optimistic outlook, according to ET. UBS, a global brokerage firm, showed confidence in Meesho by giving it a ‘Buy’ rating with a target price of Rs 220. They predicted that the number of annual users will grow from 199 million to 518 million, though average order values might decrease from Rs 274 to Rs 233.Choice Institutional Equities shared this positive outlook, setting a target price of Rs 200. “Meesho is best placed to monetise this shift via its zero-commission, low-AOV, discovery-led platform serving Tier-2/3 users. Long-tail depth, content-led demand and logistics integration enable superior unit economics, with rising ad/fintech/fulfilment monetisation makes Meesho the most leveraged play on the next 100–150Mn mass-market users,” it said.Market watchers are now curious whether Wednesday’s stock decline is just a temporary effect of the lock-in expiry or if it presents a buying opportunity before the company’s next growth phase. It’s important to note that while the lock-in expiry makes shares eligible for trading, it doesn’t necessarily mean immediate selling will occur.(Disclaimer: Recommendations and views on the stock market and other asset classes given by experts are their own. ‘Fark samjho sirji’: Rahul Gandhi takes dig at PM Modi over Trump tariffs; invokes Indira Gandhi | India News

'Fark samjho sirji': Rahul Gandhi takes dig at PM Modi over Trump tariffs; invokes Indira Gandhi

NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of “surrendering” under “pressure” and contrasted his leadership with that of former prime minister Indira Gandhi.Gandhi’s remarks came a day after US President Donald Trump, speaking at the House GOP Member Retreat, claimed that PM Modi had sought an audience with him. “Prime Minister Modi came to see me, ‘Sir, may I see you please’. Yes,” Trump said.

‘No Strategic Sense’: Ex-NSA John Bolton Slams Trump Over India Tariffs

Trump also referred to India facing steep tariffs, saying New Delhi was “paying a lot of tariffs now” and had “reduced” the purchase of Russian oil “substantially”.Gandhi shared a video message on X with the caption “Fark samjho sirji”.“I know these BJP–RSS people very well now. Put a little pressure on them, give them a little push and they run away in fear,” Gandhi said. “As soon as Trump signalled from there, they picked up the phone and said, ‘What are you doing Modi ji?’ Narendra surrendered and with ‘yes sir’, Narendra Modi ji followed Trump’s signal.”Drawing a comparison with the 1971 war, Gandhi said India had once stood firm despite US pressure. “You might remember a time when the phone call didn’t come — the Seventh Fleet had come. In the 1971 war, the Seventh Fleet came, weapons came, an aircraft carrier came. Indira Gandhi ji said, ‘I will do what I have to do.’ This is the difference,” he said, referring to the United States Seventh Fleet.Trump has imposed tariffs totalling 50% on Indian exports, including a 25% levy linked to India’s procurement of Russian oil.“I have a very good relationship with him. He’s not that happy with me because they’re paying a lot of tariffs now because they’re not doing the oil — but they are, they’ve now reduced it very substantially,” Trump said. The tariffs, imposed in August, have triggered multiple rounds of trade talks and at least four conversations between the two leaders, but have yet to yield a bilateral trade deal.Separately, Trump also said in his remarks that India had flagged delays in the delivery of Apache helicopters, claiming New Delhi has been waiting for the aircraft for five years.

Jacob Bethell stands tall with maiden century in tense Ashes decider | Cricket News

Jacob Bethell stood tall with a flawless maiden Test century on Wednesday, anchoring England’s reply as the visitors clawed their way back into the contest and edged into a slender 119-run lead, leaving the fifth and final Ashes Test delicately poised. At stumps on Day 4 at the Sydney Cricket Ground, England were 302 for 8, with the 22-year-old unbeaten on 142 and Matthew Potts yet to open his account.Bethell’s innings proved pivotal after England suffered early blows, losing Zak Crawley cheaply and Joe Root soon after. Showing composure well beyond his years, the left-hander brought up his hundred in style from 162 deliveries, unfazed by the pressure around him.

Usman Khawaja’s retirement speech: ‘I want the journey for the next Usman Khawaja to be easier’

However, wickets continued to fall at the other end. Just two overs after Bethell reached three figures, Beau Webster struck twice in the space of three balls, dismissing Harry Brook for 42 and removing Will Jacks for a duck. England’s troubles deepened when Jamie Smith was run out for 24 following a disastrous mix-up.Ben Stokes, who had earlier limped off while bowling with what appeared to be a groin issue, came in at No. 7 but survived only five balls before falling to Webster. England, chasing another morale-boosting victory after their win in Melbourne, remain in pursuit despite Australia already securing the Ashes with a 3-1 series lead.Remarkably, Bethell’s century was not only his maiden Test hundred but also his first in red-ball cricket, surpassing his previous best of 96 against New Zealand. Recalled for the Melbourne Test in place of the struggling Ollie Pope, Bethell has strengthened his claim to the No. 3 spot after also contributing a gritty 40 in challenging conditions.Earlier, Australia were dismissed for 567 before lunch, built around Travis Head’s 163 and a commanding 138 from captain Steve Smith, leaving England to erase a daunting first-innings deficit of 183 after being bowled out for 384.England’s chase began shakily as Mitchell Starc struck with a first-over breakthrough, trapping Crawley lbw for one. Ben Duckett, dropped on 38, failed to capitalise and was bowled by Michael Neser for 42. Root endured a torrid stay before falling lbw to Scott Boland for six.Bethell, though, remained immovable, taking England past Australia’s lead shortly after tea with a single off Neser and celebrating his hundred with a crisp boundary through midwicket. Webster’s late strikes swung momentum back Australia’s way, but Bethell’s resolve ensured the contest heads into the final day finely balanced.

Jeev Sabha backs ‘catch-vaccinate-sterilise-release’ model to save strays | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: At a press conference on Monday, a citizen-led civic platform unveiled a “humane, science-based alternative” to the Supreme Court’s order directing the corralling of stray dogs into shelters. Animal welfare activists, health practitioners, and citizens–united under the newly formed collective Jeev Sabha-argued the ‘catch-vaccinate-sterilise-release’ model is a more effective animal management strategy than mass confinement, for reducing dog bites and preventing rabies. Jeev Sabha outlined a 4-pronged framework: Scaling up Animal Birth Control (ABC) alongside annual mass anti-rabies vaccination; integrating public health and municipal systems to ensure predictable vaccination and sterilisation cycles, unified disease surveillance and standardised protocols; strengthening post-bite response mechanisms; and mounting a science-backed public awareness campaign to counter fear-mongering and the animal abuse it often triggers.Confining dogs to shelters, the speakers maintained, amounted to an ad hoc and reactive response to a problem whose bark was worse than its bite. “When we talk about rabies, what we’re really talking about is fear,” said psychiatrist Dr Anjali Chhabria. Dr Shweta Singh, a Clinical Associate in Critical Care Medicine at Kokilaben Hospital, stressed rabies prevention must be treated as a non-negotiable priority of public health. Rabies, they reiterated, was 100% preventable-and treatable- with timely medical care, a goal best served by a nationwide anti-rabies campaign. The organisers also cited WHO’s ‘Zero by 30’ initiative to end human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030.They added heft to their call for systematic, in-situ animal management by citing Mumbai’s successful track record at managing the city’s dog population. The BMC’s 10-year review (2014-24) of the city’s street dog population management and sterilisation programme reported a 21.8% reduction in dog density- from 95,172 dogs, or approximately 10.54 dogs per km in 2014 to 90,757 dogs or 8.01 dogs/km in 2024-underscoring the effectiveness of the city’s ABC programme. However, the report also noted an 11.9% dip in sterilisation (by BMC), to 62.9%.

An user recently shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) stating that Google’s Gemini 3.0 Pro is better than “any of ChatGPT models”. The post shared by Joseph Carlson, host of business podcast The Joseph Carlson Show has more than 83K views so far. Among others, it caught the attention of Google AI CEO Demis Hassabis who reposted it. In the post, Carlson states that he holds a premium ChatGPT account with verified top 1% ChatGPT stats for 2025 and also has access to Gemini Pro. Being a heavy AI user, Carlson asserts Gemini 3.0 Pro surpasses all ChatGPT models in reasoning, logical soundness, explanatory depth, and access to recent data, based on his intensive daily workflows like business analysis and idea validation.“I was literally a top 1% user of ChatGPT in 2025 and have a premium account. I also have Gemini Pro and I could guarantee you that I am a top 1% user of Gemini as well (I probably use it more than ChatGPT),” Jason Carlson writes in the post.

Demis Hassabis repost

“I can confidently say, without a doubt, Gemini 3.0 pro is better than any of ChatGPT models. In my opinion, they’re not even close. The reasoning, soundness of logic, explanations, how recent the data is, all of it, is just better,” he added.

Google leaves ChatGPT ‘behind’ in AI market share: Report

Interestingly, Carlson’s remarks resonate with a recent report by Menlo Venture which revealed that OpenAI seems to have lost significant market share in the lucrative market for enterprise customers, falling to 27%. Google’s Gemini, on the other hand, has risen to 21% and rival startup Anthropic leads at 40%. Incidentally, the ChatGPT-maker disputes the figures from Menlo, noting that the venture capital company is an investor in Anthropic.Data from Similarweb reveals that in the last 12 months, Google’s Gemini has reportedly more than tripled its share of generative AI web traffic, climbing from a modest 5.4% to 18.2%. ChatGPT, once commanding an 87.2% share has slid to 68% – a staggering 19% drop.

A few weeks ago, as per Radar Online, a source revealed that Taylor Swift’s security team is worried about her as she has reportedly become a target.A source said, “Taylor is in love and living openly, but her security team is on edge. The value of what she wears could tempt professionals who plan months in advance.”As per Radar Online, a second source added, “A wedding for someone like Taylor Swift is a dream scenario for thieves; high-profile guests, expensive gifts, staff turnover, and everyone distracted, plus the millions of dollars of jewelry she will be wearing.”The source added, “Without airtight protocols, it’s chaos waiting to happen and she will potentially be a sitting duck for a heist.”The source continued, “It’s not about whether she’s careless…It’s that her life is public property – her every move is charted. Criminals don’t need to guess where she’ll be on any given night.”However, neither Taylor Swift nor Travis Kelce has responded to these speculations yet as they maintain a low profile after the star player’s poor run on the field this season.

Ashes 2025-26: Fans react as Jacob Bethell’s maiden ton keeps England alive after Beau Webster’s triple strike sparks Australia comeback on Day 4 of SCG Test

The fourth day of the fifth Ashes 2025-26 Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground witnessed a stunning shift in momentum as England’s young sensation Jacob Bethell rose to the occasion with a career-defining performance. Faced with a daunting first-innings deficit and the looming threat of a series whitewash, England relied heavily on the resilience of their top order to navigate a treacherous path against a relentless Australian bowling attack. While the visitors appeared to be cruising toward a position of dominance, the introduction of Beau Webster turned the match on its head, as his clinical triple strike reminded everyone of Australia’s ability to strike from nowhere.

Jacob Bethell’s maiden ton as the future of England arrives

Bethell etched his name into Ashes folklore with a magnificent maiden Test century that single-handedly kept England’s hopes alive at the SCG. Entering the fray at No. 3 after Mitchell Starc dismissed Zak Crawley in the very first over, the 22-year-old left-hander faced an immense 183-run first-innings deficit with the poise of a veteran. He weathered a brutal opening spell and tempered his natural aggression to anchor a vital recovery, first with Ben Duckett and later during a more fluid partnership with Harry Brook.

Bethell’s innings was a masterclass in concentration; he focused on blunting Scott Boland’s relentless accuracy while pouncing on anything wide from Michael Neser. He reached his fifty off 87 balls and didn’t let the pressure of losing Joe Root cheaply disrupt his rhythm. By the time he reached his century in the final session, his first-ever in red-ball cricket, the emotional scenes in the stands mirrored the significance of the moment for English cricket. He became one of the youngest England centurions on Australian soil, joining an elite list that includes Ben Stokes and Alastair Cook.

His footwork against the spin of Webster was particularly impressive, using his reach to negate the bounce and turn. Even as wickets tumbled at the other end during a chaotic evening session, Bethell remained the immovable object, finishing the day unbeaten on 142. His resilience ensured England not only wiped out the massive lead but moved into a position to set a challenging target for the hosts. It was a career-defining knock that silenced critics and solidified his place in the top order. Without his defiance, the fifth Test would likely have been over before sunset on Day 4, but instead, he has given his side a fighting chance to end the tour with a victory.

Beau Webster’s triple strike ignites Australia

Just as England looked set to dominate the day, Webster produced a clinical three-wicket burst that dragged Australia right back into the contest. Utilizing his immense height to find awkward bounce from the SCG surface, the all-rounder broke a century stand by trapping Harry Brook LBW for 42. He didn’t stop there, removing Will Jacks for a duck in the same over after the batter gifted a catch to the covers. His crowning moment came when he induced a faint edge from a struggling Stokes, who was caught sharply by Steve Smith in the slips. These three wickets in quick succession triggered a familiar English collapse and halted the momentum Bethell had worked so hard to build. Webster’s impact was the decisive blow that ensured Australia ended the day with their noses still slightly in front.

England finished the day at 302/8, holding a lead of 119 runs with two wickets remaining and the valiant Bethell still at the crease. While Bethell’s heroics provided the backbone of the innings, Webster’s triple strike ensured the match remains on a knife-edge heading into the final day. Australia will be confident of wrapping up the tail early on Day 5, but they must now contend with a chase on a wearing pitch that has shown signs of unpredictable turn and bounce.
