India stands its ground on dairy, agri products

NEW DELHI: India has managed to protect its ground on dairy and farm products by retaining protection on the import of corn and soyabean, both genetically modified (GM) crops in the US, but agreed to eliminate or reduce tariffs on a wide range of American food and agricultural products, including dried distillers’ grains (DDGs) and red sorghum for animal feed, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruits, soyabean oil, and wine and spirits.India has also agreed to address long-standing non-tariff barriers to the trade in US food and agricultural products. Though “non-tariff’ barriers are not explained in the India-US joint statement, it primarily indicates India’s resistance to import of GM crops such as soyabean and maize (American corn), and dairy products which are produced from cows that are fed tissues, internal organs, blood meal and other animal-based formulation.“No GM items will be imported to India. No relief or concession has been given on dairy, maize, soya meal, sugar, millets, and citrus fruits,” commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said. The statement, released on Saturday, also mentioned “additional products” in the context of reducing or eliminating tariffs on US farm produce. The mention of “additional products”, however, also remains unexplained, giving both the countries to negotiate it further beyond the scope of the interim deal. Under this head, India can always negotiate more access to the US market for the country’s high-performing exports like shrimps, fish, spices, rice, tea, coffee and rubber.Among the list of items, which India will import, tree nuts – American almonds, pistachios and walnuts – and fresh fruits, mainly apple, will not impact the interest of Indian farmers as these crops have limited acreage in the country, and the production in any case is not keeping pace with growing demand. Besides, they come with safety valves such as import quotas and minimum import price. Further, there is a distinction made between unshelled – where cuts will be sharper given the possibility of “value addition” in India – and shelled – where the cuts will be lower. “We import apples and the agreed quota is lower than what we import from the US,” Goyal said, adding import duty of 20% and minimum import price of Rs 80 a kg, will ensure a landed price of around Rs 100 a kilo against Rs 75 at present. As far as Indian export is concerned, many farm produce would face zero reciprocal tariffs, with additional duties removed. These include spices, tea, coffee, coconut and coconut oil and cashew. “No tariff concessions have been granted for agricultural products from US farmers entering India,” he said.

Congress calls pact a surrender, says something being hidden

NEW DELHI: Dubbing the India-US trade deal interim framework as a “surrender”, Congress on Saturday said commerce minister Piyush Goyal’s statement on agri imports was “too clever by half” as the joint statement mentions a list of products which India would eliminate or reduce tariffs upon, including “additional products”.Congress MP Jairam Ramesh noted “additional products” were not specified, that the category was “too open-ended and shows that something is being hidden”. He said there would be concerns when more details came to light.Former finance minister P Chidambaram said India and the US had not reached any trade agreement and this wasn’t even an interim agreement, but “framework of an interim agreement”.“One thing is clear: The framework deal is heavily tilted in favour of the US and the asymmetry is obvious,” Chidambaram said.Congress spokesman Pawan Khera alleged the deal would break farmers’ backs in the future.

US deal boosts India's growth engine: Amit Shah

NEW DELHI: The announcement of an interim trade agreement between India and the US was met with warm applause from the BJP and its allies, with home minister Amit Shah saying it will give “another boost to India’s roaring growth engine”. The ruling alliance was dismissive of the opposition’s charge that the agreement harmed farmers, insisting that India had successfully protected its core interests. Shah said, “Translating PM Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat into an inevitable reality, the agreement makes way for a boom for Make in India, hardworking farmers, entrepreneurs, MSMEs, startup innovators, and fishermen while providing employment for youth and women.” Defence minister Rajnath Singh said it will expand export opportunities, strengthen labour-intensive sectors, attract high-quality investments and create large-scale employment.

Tamil literature is eternal and its culture global, PM Modi says in Malaysia | India News

Tamil literature is eternal and its culture global, PM Modi says in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR/NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi on Saturday chose an Indian community event in Kuala Lumpur to shower praise on Tamil culture and highlight the presence of several Tamilians in key positions in India. The focus on Tamilians was, though, very much in order as they make up an overwhelming majority of people of Indian origins in Malaysia. Tamil literature is eternal and its culture global, he emphasised, noting that Malaysia is home to the second largest population of Indian-origin community in the world. In India, he said, Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan is a Tamilian and so are key members of his govt, EAM S Jaishankar and finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman. A junior minister L Murugan is from Tamil Nadu as well, he added. Though he has often voiced his admiration for Tamil language and culture, his generous praise at the event in Kuala Lumpur had political significance as well, as Tamil Nadu is headed for the assembly polls. At the ‘Selamat Datang Modi Ji (welcome Modi)’ event, Modi recalled that when he first visited Malaysia in 2015, India was in the 11th spot of the economic ladder and today, a decade later, in the top three. “With the world’s largest digital public infrastructure propelling country’s economy, creating third largest start-up hub in the world, the country is ensuring clean and green growth,” he added, announcing that “UPI would be available in Malaysia very soon. He announced India’s decision to open its first consulate in Malaysia to strengthen ongoing cooperation between India and Malaysia and expand outreach to the Indian community in Malaysia. He said Tamil is India’s gift to the world. Noting that Tamil diaspora has been present in Malaysia for many centuries, he said inspired by its history, India had established the Thiruvalluvar Chair at the University of Malaya and would now set up a Thiruvalluvar Centre to further strengthen shared heritage. The Prime Minister praised his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim for the warm welcome accorded to him and said it emphasised his love and respect for India and the Indian community. Anwar who was present at the meeting had called Modi “a great friend”.

‘Till the time he does not play Tests, I won’t consider him a big cricketer’: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s father | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: The meme “Bihar is not for beginners” remains a popular trend on social media. Be it the stolen bridges, Bihar elections, Bihar’s politicians or even the dialect. On Friday, Vaibhav, hailing from Samastipur, Bihar, not only silenced his critics but also showed the world that he is truly special and that this is just the beginning.“When Vaibhav called, I couldn’t hold my tears back,” Sanjeev tells TimesofIndia.com from Samastipur, with a lump in his throat.

Why Gautam Gambhir and Hardik Pandya had an intense chat before India vs USA T20 WC

“He was jumping in joy with other boys. I told him that I would talk to him later because it’s a memorable moment. After this, he won’t get to play in the under-19s. He should enjoy the moment,” he adds.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!On Friday, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smoked 15 sixes and 15 fours at a strike rate of 218.75 during a brutal and breathtaking knock in the U-19 World Cup final against England at the Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe. He scored 24 off his first 24 balls, meaning his last 151 runs came off just 56 deliveries. His knock proved to be the difference as India defeated England by 100 runs and won the title for a record sixth time.

Abhi toh shuruaat hai, abhi bahut aage jaana hai (This is just the beginning, there’s a lot more to achieve). Jab tak Test na khele, kya bada cricketer (Till the time he does not play Tests, I won’t consider him a big cricketer),” says Sanjeev, who has set lofty goals for his son.In Patna, Vaibhav’s coach Manish Ojha’s phone is buzzing with congratulatory messages and some strange requests: “Sir, mera beta do saal ka hai, usko cricketer Vaibhav bana dijiye (My son is two years old, make him like Vaibhav).”“Absolute madness ho rakha hai. The kind of messages I am getting. Vaibhav has brought a sporting revolution in Bihar. Now people will let their kids play sport,” says Ojha, quoting a local proverb which became a song in MS Dhoni’s biopic: “Padhoge likhoge banoge nawaab, kheloge kudoge banoge kharaab (If you study, you’ll become a nobleman; if you only play, you’ll be ruined).”

The trendsetter

Vaibhav’s rise is certainly something that Bihar needed. In cricket, Vaibhav has become a trendsetter, as Ojha says, “He is not a player who believes in taking singles or doubles. His belief system, his instinct, tells him only one thing: go for the kill. He believes in complete domination.”Not to forget, Vaibhav comes from a state which has always set trends. What the English boys tasted in Harare on Friday, the British Empire’s roots were shaken in 1917 when Mahatma Gandhi started the Champaran Satyagraha against the Tinkathia system. Fast forward to 1974, socialist Jayaprakash Narayan, popularly known as JP, gave the call for Sampoorna Kranti (Total Revolution), which changed the discourse of India.

Cut to the present, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, with his blistering batting, is setting a new trend.Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s stats in U-19 World Cup final:🔴Sooryavanshi’s innings took his tournament tally to 439 runs in seven innings at an average of 62.71, second only to Mayes (444 runs at 74).🔴It was the highest score in an Under-19 World Cup final, surpassing Unmukt Chand’s unbeaten 111 for India against Australia in the 2012 final.🔴The knock is the ninth-highest score in the history of youth ODIs. South Africa’s Jorich van Schalkwyk (215 vs Zimbabwe) remains the only player to score a double century.🔴Overall, it ranks as the sixth-highest individual score in Under-19 World Cup history.🔴Sooryavanshi smashed a record 15 sixes in a youth ODI innings, breaking his own previous record of 14 against the UAE at last year’s Under-19 Asia Cup.🔴His 15 sixes are the most in a single Under-19 World Cup innings, with only two other players managing double-digit sixes.🔴The century came off 55 balls, the second-fastest hundred in Under-19 World Cups, behind Will Malajczuk’s 51-ball century for Australia against Japan earlier in the tournament.

The slow start

Before the semifinals and the final, Vaibhav’s scores were 72 (67), 40 (23), 52 (23), 30 (22). He was getting starts but was not able to convert them into a big score.

Vaibhav and Manish

“Cricket is a great leveller. Saamne wala bhi toh soch samajh ke bowling karne aata hai. Wo bhi utni hi mehnat kar ke aata hai jitni Vaibhav karta hai (The opposition bowlers also come with a plan. They also work just as hard and put in as much effort as Vaibhav does),” says Vaibhav’s father. In the semi-final, his 33-ball 68 helped India chase down Afghanistan’s 311 runs in 41.1 overs. After this knock, the 14-year-old gained some confidence and, for the first time, he called his father during the tournament.“He does not talk to me until he makes a big score. After doing well in the semi-final, he spoke to me,” shares Sanjeev.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi of India waits to take the field

“He said, ‘Papa, I am getting the start but I am not able to convert it. Har jagah shatak lagaye, is tournament mein abhi tak nahi aaya (I have scored centuries everywhere, but it has not come here yet),’” Sanjeev recollects the conversation.“I consoled him. Although I was also getting a bit impatient, I told him that his early blitz was helping the team win games. Play like this and leave the rest to God. He was happy and relaxed that Papa was not angry. He called me again after half an hour. It doesn’t happen that he calls me twice. I again told him to play according to his nature,” he adds. And boy did Vaibhav play according to his nature. Ask Thomas Rew’s boys, who looked hapless on the ground.“Look, I can’t say the tournament wasn’t going well. You could say there weren’t many big scores,” says Vaibhav’s coach.

“Vaibhav has set such a high benchmark for himself that even scores of 50 or 60 don’t feel significant anymore. If you look closely, the 72 he made against Bangladesh was a match-winning knock. Against Afghanistan in the semi-final, he scored 68 in the first 10 overs and set the tone for India while chasing 300 plus.“What was missing was that one big performance. But that comes with the kind of player Vaibhav is. On the day he gets going, there is no stopping him. Failures and not converting starts are part of the package. Because when he finds his rhythm and is in full flow, everything becomes easy for him and for the team,” he adds.

What next for Vaibhav?

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi burst onto the scene in April last year by hitting a six off his first ball in the IPL. He soon became the youngest centurion in men’s T20s, scoring a 35-ball hundred for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans, the second-fastest IPL century after Chris Gayle’s 30-ball ton in 2013.In July 2025, he recorded the fastest youth ODI century at the time, reaching three figures in 52 balls while scoring 143 off 78 against England at Worcester. Four months later, he smashed a 32-ball century for India A against the UAE in the Asia Cup Rising Stars T20, eventually making 144 off 42 balls.Sanjeev has just one piece of advice for his son, whom many are predicting could become India’s youngest international cricketer after the ongoing T20 World Cup.

“I have always told him, jitna achha khelo utna hi jhuk ke raho (The better you play, the more humble you should be). Keep talking to your seniors and coaches, ask them where you can improve. Yes, you have scored a big century in the U-19 World Cup final, but that is done. The goal is to play Test cricket for India.“I gave him Sachin Tendulkar’s reference. He scored so many runs, and there was never any controversy around him. The cricketing world adores him,” says Sanjeev.

Poll

Do you think Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has the potential to become India’s youngest international cricketer?

Coach Manish wants his ward to dominate the Ranji Trophy now.“Bihar is in the Elite this year. The BCCI has set a programme for him as well. But his real test will be with the red ball. I am sure he will annihilate bowlers there as well,” said Manish with a laugh.

Fans go crazy as Suryakumar Yadav orchestrates India’s dominant win over USA in T20 World Cup 2026

The iconic Wankhede Stadium turned into a sea of blue on Saturday as India squared off against the United States of America in the 3rd match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. In what was expected to be a straightforward encounter, the partisan Mumbai crowd was treated to a rollercoaster of emotions. While the underdog Americans punched above their weight with a disciplined bowling performance, a captain’s knock from local hero Suryakumar Yadav ensured India secured a 29-run victory, maintaining their dominant start to the tournament.

Suryakumar Yadav plays a captain’s knock after India’s top-order collapse against USA

The match began with a stunned silence as the USA seamers exploited the early evening moisture. Abhishek Sharma fell for a duck in the second over, and the pressure mounted when Ishan Kishan (20) and Tilak Varma (25) were dismissed in quick succession. The Wankhede faithful watched in disbelief as Shivam Dube walked back for a golden duck, leaving India reeling at 46/4 before the Powerplay had even concluded. Shadley van Schalkwyk was the wrecker-in-chief, finishing with impressive figures of 4/25.

However, the Suryakumar decided to play a different brand of cricket. Stepping into his role as captain, SKY anchored the innings with tactical brilliance. While partners like Rinku Singh and Hardik Pandya struggled to find timing, Suryakumar remained unfazed. He reached his half-century off 36 balls, then accelerated with a flurry of trademark ramps and extra-cover drives. His unbeaten 84 off 49 balls, featuring 7 boundaries and 10 towering sixes, single-handedly dragged India from a precarious position to a competitive total of 161/9. His ability to manipulate the field during the death overs proved to be the difference-maker, as India added 50 runs in the final six overs despite losing wickets at the other end.

India’s disciplined bowling attack stifles USA’s historic pursuit in T20 World Cup 2026

Defending 161, the Indian bowling unit, led by Mohammed Siraj, hit their straps immediately. The USA’s chase never truly found its rhythm as Siraj removed Andries Gous and Saiteja Mukkamalla early, while Arshdeep Singh sent Monank Patel packing for a duck. Within the first 20 balls, the USA were reduced to 13/3, effectively ending hopes of a massive upset.

The Americans showed resilience in the middle overs, spearheaded by Milind Kumar (34) and Sanjay Krishnamurthi (37). Their 50-run partnership for the fourth wicket kept the scoreboard ticking and gave the Indian fans a brief scare. However, India’s spin twins, Axar Patel and Varun Chakravarthy, tightened the screws. Patel’s double-strike in the 16th over, removing both Krishnamurthi and Harmeet Singh, effectively broke the back of the chase.

Despite a late cameo from Shubham Ranjane (37 off 22), the asking rate proved too high. USA finished their 20 overs at 132/8, handing India a hard-fought 29-run win. While the USA earned respect for their gritty performance, it was the genius of SKY that ensured the hosts stayed on track for World Cup glory.

Thane court acquits spa manager in human trafficking, prostitution case | Mumbai News

Thane: A sessions court acquitted a spa manager accused of running a prostitution racket and trafficking women, citing a lack of evidence and the prosecution’s failure to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. The case dated back to December 9, 2020, when the Anti-Human Trafficking Cell of Thane police raided a Spa Naturopathy and Hypnosis Centre in the Kopari area following a tip-off that prostitution was allegedly being carried out on the premises. Police claimed the manager supplied women for sexual services in exchange for money and arrested him the next day.During the trial, the prosecution examined 5 witnesses, including a police informant, a decoy customer, panch witnesses, and investigating officers. However, the court observed that the prosecution failed to examine any of the alleged victims to establish charges of trafficking or prostitution. The court noted that statements recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC showed that the women engaged in massage and acupressure services and did not allege coercion or sexual exploitation.Additional Sessions Judge GT Pawar, while delivering the judgment on January 28, 2026, held that essential ingredients required to attract offences under Section 370 of the IPC—such as recruitment, coercion, inducement, or exploitation—were not proved. Similarly, the court found no material to establish that the accused managed a brothel, lived off the earnings of prostitution, or procured women for sexual exploitation under the PITA Act.“The prosecution failed to establish that the victims were trafficked or forced into prostitution,” the court observed, granting the accused the benefit of doubt and acquitting him of all charges. The court ordered disposal of seized electronic devices and cash as per procedure and directed that the accused furnish a personal bond under Section 437-A of the CrPC.

Ofcom revokes TV licences of Overseas Friends of BJP (UK) president

Ofcom revokes TV licences of Overseas Friends of BJP (UK) president

TOI Correspondent from London: UK communications industry regulator Ofcom said on Friday it has revoked both broadcasting licences of an Indian community TV channel run by Overseas Friends of BJP (UK) president Kuldeep Shekhawat. Both licences were held by Middlesex Broadcasting Corporation Limited (MBCL) for MATV National and MATV Music.MATV National is a satellite television service that, until Friday, broadcast on Sky 709 in Indian languages and English, covering news and entertainment for the South Asian diaspora in Europe. MATV Music has never been on air and just had a licence. In the UK a broadcasting licence must be held by the provider of the service, that is a person or organisation who has editorial control over programmes. In Aug 2024, Ofcom started investigating the control exercised by MBCL over MATV National and MATV Music and determined that MBCL , the licence-holder for MATV, was not the provider as it did not did not have editorial responsibility for MATV’s output, but instead, it was MATV Broadcasting Ltd that exercised control. Providing a television service without a licence is a criminal offence in the UK.Shekhawat is a director of MATV Broadcasting. He was the sole director, holding 90% of the shares until July 2025. Now his wife Alpana has 65% shares. Ofcom said it would be “minded to refuse” any application for the transfer of the licences to MATV Broadcasting on the basis that it appeared that they are likely to be a ‘disqualified person’.”An individual who is an officer of a body whose objects are wholly or mainly of a political nature is disqualified to hold a TV licence in Britain. “Throughout this time Kuldeep Singh Shekhawat has been president of the OFBJPUK. We were concerned that the OFBJPUK is likely to be a body whose objects are wholly or mainly of a political nature…” Ofcom said.Shekhawat has run the Wembley-based channel since 2005. He told TOI that his wife, Alpana, is now director of MBCL and majority share-holder.“Ofcom is saying because of my political background I am not allowed to run the channel. But I only became OFBJP UK president in 2018. Before that I wasn’t involved in politics. OFBJP is not a political party. It is a social group. We will apply for a licence again with 100% shares to a different person,” he said.
