5 bullets recovered from IIT-Bombay hostel bag; Bihar visitor held | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Police arrested a college dropout from Bihar, Anand Chaudhary (23), from IIT-Bombay’s hostel premises on Feb 19 for possession of five live 7.65mm bullets that were found in a bag belonging to a friend who is a first-year IIT BTech student. “The friend was aware about the bullets worth Rs 3,500 in his bag. He did not object as it is considered normal in their hometown of Samastipur in Bihar,” said an officer, adding they suspect the IITian wanted to show off the ammunition to his roommates. The bullets were found on Feb 19 when IIT-B security personnel searched rooms in hostel number 1 for alcohol bottles after a fight broke out between two students, who were allegedly drunk. No weapon was found, said police.Police said Anand Chaudhary (23) arrived in Mumbai on February 12 to celebrate Valentine’s Day with his girlfriend, and requested his childhood friend to allow him to stay in the IIT-B hostel as a guest. He allegedly kept the bullets in his friend’s bag the same day. “On February 14, Chaudhary, his girlfriend, and the IITian went out for a movie and dinner. The friend then returned to the hostel alone,” said the police officer. In his police complaint, IIT-B security sub-inspector Amod Karanje said: “On February 19, around 1.30pm, Sham Golvinde of QRT team contacted our duty officer and informed that there was an altercation between some students on the ground floor of Hostel No. 1…over exchange of money. A few of the students smelled of alcohol… As drinking alcohol is prohibited on the campus, the IIT security team, including K P Sahu, vigilance, and QRT teams, searched their rooms and found liquor bottles as well as five live cartridges in the front pocket of a student’s bag. The student said that his friend, Chaudhary, had kept it in the bag there during his visit on February 12.”The same day, Chaudhary arrived at the hostel to meet his friend, and was apprehended by the IIT-B security and later handed over to Powai police. In a statement released by IIT-B, the administration clarified that the bullets were brought to the campus by a visitor of a student residing in the hostel. “Both of them are childhood friends. This came to our knowledge when two students had a physical altercation in the hostel and the security came into the picture. One of the students was found to be in a drunken state and as part of the standard process, the security checked his room and found liquor bottles. When they did further inspection of the room they found live ammunition (bullets) in the room. No weapon was found. A detailed internal investigation was conducted by the chief security officer and his team and the case was handed over to the police,” mentioned the statement. It added that disciplinary action will be taken as per institute procedures.(Inputs by Yogita Rao)

Tariff turbulence: Govt puts trade team’s US visit on hold; SCOTUS ruling an opening to seek better deal?

Tariff turbulence: Govt puts trade team's US visit on hold; SCOTUS ruling an opening to seek better deal?

NEW DELHI: Amid the uncertainty triggered by the US Supreme Court order invalidating Trump’s tariffs, govt has decided to reschedule the visit of the Indian team to Washington DC for finalising the legal text of the interim framework of the trade deal.Commerce department officials said the two sides were of the view that the visit by chief negotiator Darpan Jain and his team should be rescheduled until the latest developments and their implications have been evaluated. Jain was to hold three-day consultations, starting Monday, ahead of US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer’s visit to India to sign the agreement. The two sides have so far agreed on the broad framework which reflects understanding but no mutually binding commitment. But the US Supreme Court ruling against reciprocal tariffs and subsequent levies by American president Donald Trump has complicated the equations. Official: US prez can use Sec 338 allowing tariffs up to 50% Change in the travel itinerary of Jain and other negotiators is significant in view of indications in certain govt quarters that the Modi administration may not be averse to exploring if the SCOTUS’s ruling has created elbow room to seek better terms. After the US court’s order, Malaysia and Indonesia, which had finalised agreements with the US over tariff, have emphasised that nothing has been notified. South Korea, according to NY Times, has said that judicial disapproval of Trump’s tariffs has nullified its 15% reciprocal tariff deal with the US.Significantly, while reacting to SCOTUS rebuff, Trump had on Friday said that the deal with India was on. Govt officials said the legal analysis of US actions is underway along with the possible impact on trade and strategic ties. With an additional 15% tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, all countries have now been put at the same level, at least for 150 days.Yet, with the threat of further action by Trump – who is seen to have weaponised tariffs – remains and his statements so far indicate that countries will have to negotiate levies individually, while allowing greater market access for American goods.USTR Jamieson Greer has indicated that the US President can also use Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which allows for up to 50% tariffs on countries that unreasonably discriminate against US trade through tariffs, regulations or other measures.

NEW DELHI: In an apparent case of road rage, a software engineer was arrested on Friday for allegedly stabbing a man to death and injuring his friend during a parking and right-of-way dispute in south Delhi’s Aya Nagar. Police said they received information about the incident on Feb 20 from Haryana Police, who reported that one person had been declared dead on arrival and another admitted with stab injuries at a Gurgaon hospital. Since the crime took place in Aya Nagar, Delhi Police took over the investigation.

Delhi Double Murder, Terror Alert, Stabbing & More

A preliminary probe found that the two men were returning late at night from a DJ function in Dera village. Around midnight, near Ganpati Garden in Aya Nagar, they encountered a car allegedly parked in a manner that blocked their path. The men, travelling in a mini-truck carrying DJ equipment, asked the driver to move his vehicle. “The car driver said they could pass, but the truck driver insisted there was not enough space,” an officer said. An argument broke out between the two sides over the parking position and right of way. According to police, the altercation escalated and the car driver allegedly pulled out a knife and attacked both men. The injured were taken to a hospital in Gurgaon, where one of them — identified as Sandeep Lohia, 38 — died. His friend, Rishi, suffered stab wounds and is undergoing treatment. Police said he is stable and out of danger. Investigators launched a search for the car driver. The accused, identified as Ravi, 32, a resident of Sonipat, was arrested. Police said he works as an engineer at a private company in Gurgaon and had reportedly come to Aya Nagar to attend a wedding. “The accused claimed he was slapped, which prompted him to take out the knife. We are verifying his statement,” police added. The investigators said they suspect the accused may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time. “His blood sample has been sent for examination,” an officer said. The knife allegedly used in the attack has been seized. A case has been registered under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 109(1) (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Fatehpur Beri police station.

Aiden Markram hails ‘great performance’ after South Africa thrash India title

South Africa, on Sunday (February 22), handed the India a 76-run defeat at the Narendra Modi Stadium to kickstart their Super 8 campaign in style.

During the first innings of the match, when South Africa was on the batting side and India was on the bowling end, the contest was in a nice balance. In the second innings, India’s fragile batting made South Africa’s path to gain a crucial win easy.

Aiden Markram praised Indian bowlers

After the match, Aiden Markram, the skipper of the South African National cricket team, praised his batters for making the difference between the two teams. Markram acknowledges India’s bowling efforts as well, especially during the powerplays and slog overs. But it was the Proteas batters who were at the top of their game tonight.

“They bowled well up front and at the death, but our batting through the middle was probably the difference. Good effort, but we put two down. The other day against UAE, we were not as connected. That was much better today,” Markram said.

The pitch was not easy to bat: South Africa captain

The winning team captain also stated that the wicket was not easy enough to take shots. The surface was new for them, but the middle-order batters were fast enough to read the pitch timely. As soon as the batters got accustomed to the deck, they delivered.

“Great performance. A different type of wicket from what we have had here. Boys assessed that early and then adapted to their plans. Happy for the bowlers. The start to the competition was tough, but tonight they were brilliant,” the skipper added.

Markram mentioned Dewald Brevis and David Miller for their match turning knocks vs India

Markram specially mentioned Dewald Brevis and David Miller for their crucial partnership after sustaining multiple early blows. Brevis scored 45 off 29, and Miller got 63 runs in 35 balls, which set the tone for the Proteas. Later, Tristan Stubbs walked into the middle to add an unbeaten 44 runs to secure a total of 187 in the first innings, which was enough to outplay India.

“The partnership they (Dewald Brevis and David Miller) put up kept us in the game. Did not feel like the ball was travelling. It was a bit spongy. Trying to hit into space and run hard,” Aiden Markram said.

Chasing the total of 188, India bundled for only 111 in 18.5 overs and allowed South Africa to win the match by 76 runs. Marco Jansen, with 4 wickets and a 5.74 economy rate, was the best bowler in this match.

‘Dangerous tactic’: Former India cricketer questions Suryakumar Yadav’s slow scoring rate in T20 World Cup | Cricket News

'Dangerous tactic': Former India cricketer questions Suryakumar Yadav's slow scoring rate in T20 World Cup

Sanjay Manjrekar has raised concerns over the batting approach of India captain Suryakumar Yadav during the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.Manjrekar praised Suryakumar’s 84-run innings against the United States in Mumbai, where he adjusted his tempo and finished strongly. However, he said the India captain has continued with a cautious approach in later matches, which has limited the roles of Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh in the closing overs.“There is something that I am seeing in Suryakumar Yadav which I’m not liking too much. 77-6, India against USA, at the Wankhede, and Suryakumar Yadav had to change his game, which he did brilliantly. Just slowed down a little bit, and then exploded, and got a great score, player of the match, and everything,” Manjrekar said on his Instagram page.

Heavy rain forecast in Sri Lanka | Pakistan T20 World Cup dream over?

He added that Suryakumar may have taken that approach too far after that game, including during the match against Pakistan. According to him, both Suryakumar and Tilak Varma have been batting conservatively, which has reduced the impact of finishers.“Since then, I think he is taking that a bit too far. Against Pakistan, where India lost a couple of wickets, he really pulled down the shutters quite a lot. He and Tilak Varma are both playing slightly conservatively, and in the end, what happens is that people like Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, and Rinku Singh are not really tapped into resources as much,” he continued.Manjrekar also said such an approach can be risky in T20 cricket if a senior player or captain feels the need to stay till the end, especially while batting first or chasing big totals. He said no top-order batter should try to control the innings in that way.“In T20 cricket, that is a dangerous thing to do, where a senior player or captain feels like he has got to stay in, especially while batting first. When you are setting targets of 200 plus, if you have somebody in the top four who believes that he is the guy who has got to control the innings and make sure he is the one who will take India to a certain score, that is a very dangerous tactic. No batter must think like that. So, Surya must be careful about that,” Manjrekar concluded.Suryakumar has scored 164 runs in the tournament so far, second only to Ishan Kishan among India’s batters. His strike rate of 136.13 is well below Kishan’s 202.29.India will play South Africa in their first Super 8 match in Ahmedabad on Sunday. India topped Group A with eight points after winning all their group-stage matches.

Used our talent to serve others: Pitroda; another case of Cong bashing India: BJP

NEW DELHI: Indian Overseas Congress head Sam Pitroda’s comments that India’s raw talent in the IT sector ended up serving others while the country itself could not leverage it drew sharp criticism from BJP, which called it another instance of the opposition party bashing India.“We have young talent but it is raw. What happened in software industry? We created a lot of talent but it ultimately helped multinationals world over…We could not benefit. We could not create a social media network, a company like Microsoft or even an operating system,” he said in remarks which went viral. “We have used our talent to serve others,” Pitroda said. While the US is the unquestioned leader in AI and China is next but rest of the countries are not anywhere despite making a lot of noise, he said.BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla hit back. “So after the topless act by Congress, now comes chief advisor of Laskhkar-e-Congress – Sam Pitroda,” he said in a reference to the controversial shirtless protest by Youth Congress members at the global AI summit on Friday. He accused Pitroda of lying to bash India. He mentioned operating systems like BOSS Linux, Maya OS and Prime OS. “Unfortunately Congress’ only mission is to run down Bharat with lies,” the BJP functionary said.

Pilot duty exemptions weigh in heavy on DGCA’s summer plan | India News

Pilot duty exemptions weigh in heavy on DGCA’s summer plan

NEW DELHI: Aviation authorities have begun the process of determining how many flights — both domestic and international — will operate this summer. DGCA will weigh in pilot availability while approving summer schedules, effective March 29 to avoid a crisis like the one seen by IndiGo two months ago.Determining pilot availability, however, is proving to be a tightrope walk as all major Indian carriers have got regulatory exemption from certain clauses of flight duty time limitation (FDTL) rules for cockpit crew. These exemptions lapse next month end. Airlines have sought an extension for the same and DGCA is reviewing their requests.

Pilot duty exemptions weigh in heavy on DGCA’s summer plan

Airlines’ ability to operate any given number of flights will depend on that decision. Withdrawing FDTL exemptions will mean fewer flights in peak summer travel season, higher fares and public outcry — something govt will be keen to avoid. And extending them will lead to concerns over fatigued crew stretching themselves, something that affects flight safety.Air India, for instance, has been taking longer routes on its flights to and from the West due to geopolitical reasons. As per rules, they need three pilots for flights that are over 10 hours long. Since all flights between north India (Delhi being AI’s primary hub) and the West are impacted due to Pakistan airspace closure, they have an exemption for having two pilots on flights that take up to 10.5 hours. “Due to infra crunch, IndiGo and Akasa mostly get night slots at busy hubs in India. They have sought exemption from nighttime utilisation of pilots as otherwise the number of flights will not grow to cope with rising traffic but decline,” said a person in the know. Pilots said the current situation has arisen primarily due to the fact that airlines have almost always had their way with the DGCA for getting exemptions. “Airlines went slow on pilot hiring and career progression of pilots to keep their wage bill in check… Fatigue and inhuman rosters had become a reality till everyone was forced to wake up,” said a senior captain. IndiGo and AI recently resumed hiring at trainee first officer-level after almost 1.5 years.

Beware of digital fraud, do KYC via official channels: PM in ‘Mann Ki Baat’ | India News

Beware of digital fraud, do KYC via official channels: PM in ‘Mann Ki Baat’

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday issued a blunt warning against the growing menace of digital fraud and so-called “digital arrest” scams, flagging how ordinary people — from senior citizens to families saving for children’s education — are being duped of their hard-earned money by cyber criminals.Even as he cautioned people to stay vigilant and adhere to official banking processes, the PM used his monthly Mann Ki Baat address to spotlight a contrasting story of technology being used for national good — showcasing how artificial intelligence is helping India preserve, restore and reimagine its ancient knowledge systems for a global audience. In his monthly radio address, Modi said fraudsters were increasingly targeting innocent citizens.“In ‘Mann Ki Baat’, I have spoken to you at length about digital arrest… still such incidents are happening around us, that are unpardonable,” he said. “We often come to know that a senior citizen has been swindled of their lifelong earnings.”The PM cautioned people against fake calls, messages and links disguised as official communication. “Someone calls up and says, ‘I am a big officer. You have to share some details.’ After this, innocent people do just that,” he said, stressing that KYC or re-KYC should be completed “only through your bank branch, official app, and authorised medium”. He urged citizens not to share OTPs, Aadhaar numbers or bank account information, adding, “most importantly, keep changing your password from time to time.Modi also highlighted how India is blending cutting-edge technology with its civilisational heritage, drawing from demonstrations at the recently held Global AI Impact Summit in Delhi. “Leaders from all over the world were amazed to see how, with the help of AI, we are preserving our ancient texts, our ancient knowledge, our manuscripts and adapting them for today’s generation,” he said.Citing the live demonstration of Sushruta Samhita, Modi explained the multi-step AI process showcased at the summit. “In the first step, it was shown how, with the help of technology, we are improving the image quality of manuscripts and making them readable,” he said.“In the second step, this image was converted into machine-readable text… the machine-readable text was read by an AI avatar… and further… this invaluable Indian knowledge can be translated into Indian and foreign languages,” Modi saidThe PM said global leaders had showed “great interest in learning about India’s ancient knowledge through a modern avatar”, underlining India’s growing confidence in pairing advanced AI tools with its cultural and intellectual legacy.

ED to zonal heads: Use Natgrid to file 500 chargesheets this fiscal | India News

ED to zonal heads: Use Natgrid to file 500 chargesheets this fiscal

NEW DELHI: At a high-level meeting of all senior-level officers of Enforcement Directorate in Guwahati last week, which was chaired by director Rahul Navin, all zonal offices were asked to expedite the filing of chargesheets so that the central agency can achieve its target of filing 500 prosecution complaints (chargesheets) in this financial year, which will come to a close in a little over a month’s time.Senior officials from other central agencies such as Narcotics Control Bureau, Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and from Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India were called to make presentations on the trends in financial crimes, cases of digital arrest, organised online frauds and cross-border anti-India activities. As some officers highlighted non-cooperation from some state govts, ED director Rahul Navin asked his zonal heads to enhance use of intelligence platforms such as Natgrid and Finnet, have greater recourse to international cooperation mechanisms and make efforts to diversify case typologies in line with emerging risks.Officers were advised to coordinate with Customs and other agencies concerned to detect illicit capital outflows disguised as legitimate trade transactions, to identify proceeds of crime related to predicate offences.Guwahati was also chosen as the venue for ED’s quarterly conference given the increasing anti-India activities from neighbouring Myanmar and Bangladesh. In the last two to three years, the directorate has significantly expanded its footprint in the North-East, opening six new offices and establishing a presence in almost all states of the region, which has witnessed rising cases of cybercrime and drug trafficking. In Sept last year, CBI conducted its quarterly conference in Srinagar. According to the officer, the intent behind organising the high-level meet there was “to restore confidence in the security environment of the Union territory after the unfortunate terrorist attack at Pahalgam a few months earlier”. It was done to show that J&K remains a safe, vibrant and forward-looking venue for national and international level deliberations, the officer added.
