China tightens hold on rare earth metals to counter US supply chain push

China has intensified efforts to cement its dominance over rare earth metals as the United States moves to build a broad international coalition to secure critical mineral supply chains, official and media reports said.Chinese Premier Li Qiang this week visited Ganzhou in Jiangxi province — one of the world’s largest heavy rare earth production bases — underscoring Beijing’s strategic focus on the sector that underpins advanced manufacturing and technology. Li inspected key producers, research institutions including the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Ganjiang Innovation Academy, and held talks with local business leaders and scientists, according to Chinese state media Xinhua.South China Morning Post quoted Li as saying, “The value of rare earths in boosting advanced manufacturing and green, low‑carbon transformation is increasingly prominent,” highlighting the role of these metals in high-tech and clean-energy industries China currently accounts for around 70 % of global rare earth mining and nearly 90 % of processing capacity, giving it substantial leverage in disputes with the United States and other major economies.Beijing’s tightened export controls last year led to disruptions in supply to the US, the EU, India, and other nations, prompting Washington to accelerate efforts to diversify sources of the minerals, which are essential for electronics, automobiles, wind turbines, and defence equipment.According to news agency PTI, China’s restrictions on rare earth supplies previously forced US President Donald Trump to agree to resume shipments to Washington in exchange for tariff concessions and lifting a semiconductor export ban.In response, the Trump administration this month launched a major initiative to form a metallic alliance with more than 50 nations, including India, aimed at securing critical mineral supply chains and reducing reliance on China. As part of this strategy, the US has unveiled a USD 12 billion stockpile plan dubbed “Project Vault” to finance domestic and allied mining and processing.Li also chaired a State Council meeting to push AI-driven innovation, emphasising the integration of data, computing, electricity, network resources, and hardware-software synergy to strengthen China’s technological edge, South China Morning Post reported.

America wants AI girlfriends, China wants AI boyfriends – here’s why | World News

America wants AI girlfriends, China wants AI boyfriends - here's why

There was a book. Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus. The AI update is this: AI boyfriends are from China, AI girlfriends from America. That line sounds like a meme. It isn’t. It is an accurate description of how two superpowers have ended up exporting very different kinds of digital intimacy, using largely the same technology, but embedding it in radically different social anxieties, gender politics, and state priorities. The argument was first laid out clearly in an October 7, 2025 Substack essay by Zilan Qian, a fellow at the Oxford China Policy Lab, titled Why America Builds AI Girlfriends and China Makes AI Boyfriends. It is worth quoting her framing once, because it captures the core idea neatly: different societies build different AI companions, and those companions then reflect and amplify the fears of those societies. Now let’s unpack what that actually means.

America’s AI girlfriends and the crisis of male intimacy

America's AI problem

In the US and much of the English-speaking internet, AI companions are overwhelmingly designed for men. The typical AI girlfriend is endlessly available, emotionally affirming, flirtatious on demand, and crucially programmable. She does not reject. She does not argue unless asked to. She does not leave. This is not accidental design. It maps directly onto a very specific social moment. Young men in the West are lonelier than previous generations, more online than ever, and increasingly anxious about real-world dating. Many explicitly say they prefer AI partners because they fear rejection or feel alienated by changing gender norms.AI girlfriends fit neatly into this gap. They offer intimacy without negotiation and validation without vulnerability. The technology is sold as companionship, but the appeal is control. You do not need social skills. You do not need emotional labour. You just need a subscription. There is something quietly tragic about that. Not because desire is wrong, but because it is being channelled into something that never risks disappointment. Real intimacy requires the possibility of being refused. It requires awkwardness, compromise, the uncomfortable knowledge that the other person has an interior life that may not centre you. The AI girlfriend removes that risk. She is affection without friction. It also explains why US regulators worry less about marriage rates and more about addiction and minors. When the Federal Trade Commission launched inquiries into AI companion apps, the concern was emotional dependence, especially among teenagers. The fear is not that people will stop having families. It is that people will stop needing other humans at all.The American anxiety is psychological. It is about isolation in a hyper-connected world. It is about a generation that can stream anything, order anything, automate anything, but struggles to sit across from another person and ask, without irony, “Do you like me?”

China’s AI boyfriends and the politics of marriage

The Loneliness Problem

China’s AI companion market flips the gender script almost entirely. The dominant users are not young men but urban, educated women, typically in their late twenties and thirties. The most popular products are not hypersexualised girlfriends but emotionally attentive, narrative-driven AI boyfriends. This difference is rooted in demography and policy. China has a collapsing marriage rate, a persistent gender imbalance, and a state that is openly anxious about falling birth numbers. In that context, AI companionship is not just a mental health question. It is a demographic one.For many educated women in Chinese cities, traditional marriage comes with heavy social costs: expectations around caregiving, career sacrifice, and patriarchal family structures. AI boyfriends offer romance without those obligations. They listen. They support. They never ask you to quit your job or move back to a hometown you escaped years ago. They do not bring in-laws into the conversation. They do not measure your worth against fertility timelines. There is poignancy here too. Not because technology is replacing men, but because it reveals what many women feel they must give up to enter conventional relationships. The AI boyfriend becomes a quiet protest. A rehearsal for tenderness without surrender. That is precisely why Chinese regulators are uneasy. The concern is not merely sexual content or minors. It is whether emotionally fulfilling AI relationships make opting out of marriage easier. In a system that still views family formation as a matter of national interest, that is politically sensitive territory. The Chinese anxiety is structural. It is about births, social stability, and the invisible architecture of the family.

Same tech, different fantasies

AI Boyfriends vs AI girlfriends

Strip away the avatars and the accents, and the underlying technology is similar. Large language models do not care about gender politics. Product managers do.American platforms monetise desire through freemium models, explicit content, and rapid character switching. The user can customise, tweak, discard, upgrade. The relationship is modular.Chinese platforms borrow mechanics from gaming culture: story arcs, collectible cards, gacha systems, and long-term emotional investment. The relationship unfolds like a serialised romance, with layers, memory, and continuity. One market rewards novelty. The other rewards narrative depth. What emerges is not just a difference in taste, but a difference in what each society is quietly anxious about. The US fears isolation, radicalisation, and emotional dependency among young men. China fears declining marriages, declining births, and women opting out of traditional social roles.Underneath both is the same current: a sense that something in human relationships is fraying.

What this really says about us

The Loneliness Conundrum

AI companions did not invent loneliness, misogyny, or demographic panic. They monetised them.American AI girlfriends are a mirror held up to a generation of men who feel rejected by real relationships and empowered by programmable ones. Chinese AI boyfriends reflect a generation of women who want intimacy without the costs that society still attaches to marriage. In both cases, the technology is doing something very human. It is filling gaps that societies have failed to address. It is stepping into the silence left by mistrust, exhaustion, and unmet expectations. The uncomfortable question is not whether these companions are safe, or addictive, or manipulative. The uncomfortable question is why so many people find them preferable.Men were never really from Mars. Women were never from Venus. But in the age of artificial intimacy, where your AI lover comes from tells you exactly what your country is worried about. And perhaps, more painfully, what it has not yet managed to fix.

'Whatever discussions we had remains between us': Supriya Sule on merger of NCP factions after Ajit Pawar's death

NEW DELHI: NCP (SP) working president Supriya Sule on Thursday said it was the moral responsibility of everyone to fulfil the unfinished dreams of Ajit Pawar, who died in a plane crash on January 28. She also added that the merger discussions they had “remain between us”.“We are supporting each other and moving forward. Dada is no more, so I do not want to revisit old matters. Whatever discussions we had remain between us. It is our moral responsibility to complete his unfinished dreams,” news agency PTI quoted her as saying when asked about speculation over a possible merger of the two NCP factions. On whether talks on a merger would continue, Sule said the family was in mourning and did not wish to comment further at this stage.Referring to concerns raised by MLA Rohit Pawar over the circumstances of the plane crash, she said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had assured a detailed inquiry. “His uneasiness is natural. There are many questions about what happened, how it happened and whether it could have been prevented. The chief minister has promised a detailed probe. We should wait for its outcome,” the Baramati Lok Sabha MP said.Sule also expressed gratitude to leaders across party lines who enquired about the health of NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar during his recent hospitalisation. She said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, Union minister Rajnath Singh, and Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah were among those who reached out. “I sincerely thank everyone for standing with the Pawar family during this period,” she said.

Quote of the day by Lindsey Vonn: ‘I’m never tired of winning’ | Off the field News

Quote of the day by Lindsey Vonn: 'I’m never tired of winning'

NEW DELHI: The words echo with the fierce determination that has defined one of alpine skiing’s greatest champions. For Lindsey Vonn, winning has never just been about medals, it has been about resilience, comeback, and an unrelenting hunger to push boundaries.Just days after a devastating crash at the Milan Cortina Games, Vonn delivered another powerful reminder of her mindset, updating fans from her hospital bed after undergoing a “successful” third surgery on her broken left leg.

‘Terrifying’ Olympic Ski Star Lindsey Vonn’s Crash Seen In Shocking Photos

“I had my 3rd surgery today and it was successful. Success today has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago,” Vonn wrote on Instagram, sharing photos of herself giving a thumbs-up with a metal frame stabilising her leg. “I’m making progress and while it is slow, I know I’ll be ok.”Quote of the day:I’m never tired of winning, and I’m never tired of skiing.”Earlier this month, during the Winter Olympics, the 41-year-old skiing legend crashed just 13 seconds into her downhill run and was airlifted off the course, later revealing a complex tibia fracture that would require multiple surgeries. The setback came just nine days after she ruptured the ACL in the same knee yet another chapter in a career marked by extraordinary highs and punishing injuries.Vonn’s comeback story had already captivated fans worldwide. After nearly six years of retirement, she returned to competitive skiing in December 2024 following knee surgery earlier that year.Heading into the Olympics, she was in sensational form, winning two downhills, finishing on the podium in seven of eight World Cup races, and proving she could still dominate the speed events.Doctors noted that her injury required external fixation, a technique used to stabilise severe fractures, but Vonn’s spirit remained unbroken. Surrounded by family and flooded with messages of support, she thanked medical staff, friends, and fans, while also cheering on her Team USA teammates from her hospital room.Billie Jean King hailed her as “Forever the champion,” while Allyson Felix sent messages of love and encouragement. Teammates called her “the baddest there is,” reflecting the respect she commands across the sporting world.“I’m never tired of winning” may sound like a simple statement, but in Vonn’s journey, it represents far more than trophies. It symbolises an athlete who refuses to surrender—to injury, to age, or to doubt.

“A nosedive correction in the IT index triggered by mounting concerns over AI-led disruptions, along with low expectations of a US Fed rate cut due to strong US job data and unemployment rates, dampened investor sentiment,” Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said, PTI quoted. He added that in the global markets, AI is reshaping markets by compressing margins in service-intensive sectors and increasing concentration-led volatility.“In India, this technology shift is likely to structurally transform IT services by accelerating delivery timelines and automating volume-driven tasks, thereby challenging the traditional headcount-based outsourcing model.“A weak sentiment in the IT sector, along with lingering geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran, may influence investors to take a cautious approach in the near term,” Nair said.In Asian markets, South Korea’s Kospi closed over 3 per cent higher. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index and Shanghai’s SSE Composite index also ended on a positive note, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng benchmark finished in the negative territory.

WATCH: Jasprit Bumrah’s fiery yorker leaves Ishan Kishan in extreme pain

India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan sparked concern within the camp after a video surfaced showing him limping during a training session ahead of India’s second match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 against Namibia.

Jasprit Bumrah’s deadly yorker floors Ishan Kishan in painful moment

The incident took place when pacer Jasprit Bumrah delivered a trademark pinpoint yorker that struck Kishan flush on the foot. The batter attempted to negotiate the delivery but was beaten by the precision and pace, immediately showing signs of discomfort.

The clip, which quickly gained traction on social media, showed concerned faces in the Indian setup as Kishan struggled momentarily before being attended to by the team physio.

Following the blow, Kishan received on-field treatment while Bumrah walked over to check on his teammate. Although the initial visuals appeared worrying, the mood lightened slightly as members of the support staff managed to share a brief smile while Kishan tried to shake off the pain.

Here’s the video:

At this stage, there has been no official confirmation of the severity of the knock. However, given India’s ongoing fitness concerns in the tournament, even minor setbacks are being closely monitored.

India battling fitness concerns early in campaign

India’s T20 World Cup 2026 journey has already been disrupted by injury and illness setbacks. Fast bowler Harshit Rana was ruled out of the tournament after injuring his knee during a warm-up match against South Africa.

In addition, opening batter Abhishek Sharma was hospitalised due to a stomach infection. Reports indicated he was battling a high fever during India’s opening fixture against the United States of America (USA), where he was dismissed for a first-ball duck.

Even Bumrah himself missed the USA encounter after feeling unwell. The pacer resumed bowling in the nets prior to the Namibia game, indicating his return to match readiness.

Sanju Samson likely backup option at the top

Should either Ishan or Abhishek be unavailable for selection against Namibia, Sanju Samson is expected to step in as an opening option.

Samson’s versatility and experience in the T20 format provide India with a reliable contingency plan. However, team management will hope that Kishan’s injury scare proves minor and does not further complicate their combination early in the tournament.

India will be keen to stabilise their lineup after an inconsistent start. The upcoming clash against Namibia offers an opportunity to regain rhythm, provided the squad is close to full strength.
