SA vs NZ: Quinton de Kock breaks MS Dhoni’s T20 World Cup record

In a milestone-packed night at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Quinton de Kock overtook MS Dhoni for the most wicketkeeper dismissals in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history, and South Africa brushed aside New Zealand by seven wickets to edge toward the Super 8 stage of T20 World Cup 2026.

Quinton de Kock surpasses MS Dhoni’s T20 World Cup dismissals record

The moment arrived in the powerplay when Marco Jansen kissed the outside edge of Tim Seifert’s bat and de Kock, as alert as ever, gloved the chance cleanly. That catch nudged his tally to 33 dismissals – surpassing Dhoni’s longstanding mark of 32. De Kock has assembled his record in 30 matches (26 catches, 7 stumpings), shading Dhoni’s 32 dismissals across 32 games. It’s his sixth T20 World Cup campaign since debuting in 2014, mirroring Dhoni’s six appearances that bookended India’s 2007 title run and his own final World Cup outing in 2016.

Most dismissals as a wicket-keeper in T20 World Cup history

Wicketkeeper  Innings  Dismissals  Catches  Stumpings Dismissals per Innings
Quinton de Kock (South Africa)  30  33  26  07 1.1
MS Dhoni (India)  32  32  21  11 1.0
Kamran Akmal (Pakistan)  30  30  12  18 1.0

Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram anchor South Africa’s 7-wicket win over New Zealand

Jansen set the tone with the new ball and never let go. He pocketed a career-best 4/40, repeatedly prying open New Zealand’s top order. Finn Allen flashed promise with 31, while Daryl Mitchell’s compact 32 kept the board ticking, but the middle overs tightened like a vice. Mark Chapman threatened to tilt the balance with a busy 48 before Jansen returned to remove him in the 14th over. By the end of 20 overs, New Zealand found themselves limited to 175/7 – competitive, but short of intimidating on a quick outfield.

Chasing 176, South Africa chose fluency over fireworks. Aiden Markram unfurled an unbeaten 86 off 44 balls to match his career-best T20I score. He and de Kock stitched a rapid 62 off 28 deliveries to blunt the new ball, with de Kock’s brisk 20 off 14 ensuring the asking rate never spiked. Ryan Rickelton’s 21 off 11 added a punchy bridge; Dewald Brevis (21 off 17) held shape through the middle. The finishing notes came from Markram and David Miller, whose 24 not out off 17 ensured the target was hunted down with 17.1 overs on the clock – 178/3 and a statement of intent.

‘If the opposition doesn’t allow the House to function, we will go for the guillotine’: Rijiju | India News

'If the opposition doesn't allow the House to function, we will go for the guillotine': Rijiju

NEW DELHI: Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday said that the debate and subsequent vote over no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will be taken up on March 9.Rijiju said that the second part of the Budget session, scheduled from March 9 to April 2, will be “interesting” as several “important” legislations and a “critical” bill will be presented in Parliament for debate and passage. He warned that if opposition parties continue their protests as they did during the first part of the session, it would ultimately be detrimental to them.“On March 9 in the Lok Sabha, we will have the debate on the no-confidence motion moved against the speaker. It is the rule to take it up on the first day. There will be a vote following the debate,” Rijiju told news agency PTI.Noting that the second part of the budget session will be interesting, he said, “If the opposition doesn’t allow the House to function, we will go for the guillotine. It will be a loss for them,” he said.He also said that if the opposition doesn’t participate in the debate, it will be their loss.Hinting at a potential crack in the unity of the opposition, Rijiju said the Trinamool Congress did not sign the no-confidence motion against the speaker. “Most of the smaller parties are not in favour of stalling the House. They want to raise their issues, especially ahead of the assembly polls,” he said.During the first part of the session, the Lok Sabha experienced disruptions from February 2 onward, following Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s disallowance by the chair from quoting excerpts from former army chief M M Naravane’s unpublished memoir, which referenced the India-China conflict in 2020.On February 4, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was unable to respond to the debate on the Motion of Thanks due to protests by the opposition. In an unprecedented move, the Motion of Thanks was passed on February 5 without the customary speech from the prime minister. The Speaker read the Motion of Thanks to the president for her address, and it was passed by voice vote amid sloganeering from opposition members.Birla later stated that he received concrete information suggesting that several Congress MPs might carry out an “unexpected act” near the prime minister’s seat, prompting him to advise Modi against attending the House for his address. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra refuted this claim.Subsequently, eight opposition members were suspended for the remainder of the Budget Session for unruly behaviour in the House.Last week, the speaker decided to step aside from his role as the presiding officer of the House, hours after the opposition submitted a motion for his removal from office, alleging that he had acted in a “blatantly partisan” manner.

China’s secret nuclear expansion: New warhead facilities detected in Sichuan mountains

China's secret nuclear expansion: New warhead facilities detected in Sichuan mountains
(AI image generated using ChatGPT)

In the mist-covered valleys of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, satellite imagery is revealing a rapid expansion of the country’s nuclear weapons infrastructure, part of what experts say is a broader effort to strengthen China’s position in an era of intensifying superpower rivalry. These secretive nuclear-related sites, including facilities near Zitong and Pingtong, have expanded and been upgraded in recent years. Analysts say the changes fit a wider national push to modernize China’s nuclear arsenal, complicating efforts to revive global arms control after the expiration of the last remaining US-Russia nuclear treaty. Washington argues that any future agreement must also include China, but Beijing has shown no interest.

US, Russia, China And…: Nuclear Stability Shakes As 12,200+ Nukes Across 9 Nations Go Unrestricted

According to the Pentagon’s latest estimate, as reported by The New York Times, China possessed more than 600 nuclear warheads by the end of 2024 and could reach 1,000 by 2030. Although that total remains far below the stockpiles of the United States and Russia, analysts say the pace of growth is concerning.“I think without a real dialogue on these topics, which we lack, it’s really hard to say where it’s going, and that, for me, is dangerous,” said Matthew Sharp, a former State Department official now at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “Because now we’re forced to react and plan around the worst-case interpretation of a concerning trend line.”One valley lies near Zitong, where engineers have been constructing new bunkers and ramparts. A newly built complex there is threaded with pipes, suggesting it handles highly hazardous materials. Another valley houses a heavily secured site known as Pingtong, where specialists believe plutonium cores for nuclear warheads are produced. The main structure at Pingtong, marked by a 360-foot ventilation stack, has been refurbished with new vents and heat dispersers, and further construction is underway nearby. Above the entrance, large characters bearing leader Xi Jinping’s slogan—“Stay true to the founding cause and always remember our mission”—are visible from space.Experts say Pingtong’s layout resembles plutonium pit production plants in other countries, including the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States. At Zitong, the new bunkers and fortified areas are likely used to test high explosives — the chemical charges that compress nuclear material to trigger a chain reaction.“You have a layer of high explosives and the shock wave at the same time implodes into the center. This needs blast tests to perfect them,” said Hui Zhang, a physicist at Harvard University who reviewed the findings, as quoted by NYT.The precise purpose and scale of the upgrades remain uncertain. “We don’t know how many warheads have been produced, but we just see the plant expansion,” Zhang said. Some changes could reflect safety improvements or preparations to adapt warhead designs for new weapons systems such as submarine-launched missiles.“The changes we see on the ground at these sites align with China’s broader goals of becoming a global superpower. Nuclear weapons are an integral part of that,” said Renny Babiarz, a geospatial intelligence expert who analyzed satellite images of the locations. “There’s been evolution at all of these sites, but broadly speaking, that change accelerated starting from 2019,” he said.US officials worry that a larger and more advanced arsenal could affect China’s actions in a future crisis, especially over Taiwan. China seeks to ensure it is “in the position where they believe they’re largely immune from nuclear coercion by the United States,” said Michael S Chase, a former Pentagon official now at RAND. “I think they probably judge that could come into play in a conventional conflict over Taiwan.

Maharashtra Congress chief likens Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with Tipu Sultan; booked for hurting sentiments | India News

Maharashtra Congress chief likens Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with Tipu Sultan; booked for hurting sentiments

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal on Saturday stirred a controversy after he likened Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with Tipu Sultan.Speaking to reporters on the controversy surrounding a portrait of Tipu Sultan displayed in the office of Malegaon Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor Shan-e-Hind Nihal Ahmed, which was opposed by the Shiv Sena and other groups, Sapkal said in Marathi that the Mysore ruler had followed Shivaji Maharaj’s ideals.“The kind of bravery that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj possessed and the concept of ‘Swarajya’ (self-rule) that he introduced… much later, following in that very tradition and taking inspiration from his ideals, Tipu Sultan waged war against the British,” Sapkal said.“In that sense, Tipu Sultan was a great warrior who displayed immense bravery and was a true son of India. He never allowed any poisonous or communal ideas to sway him. As a symbol of bravery, we should view Tipu Sultan as equivalent to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj,” he added.Bharatiya Janata Party lodged a complaint against Sapkal in Pune following which the police booked Sapkal under sections 192, 196(1), 196(2), 352 and 356(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The complaint alleges that Sapkal’s remarks hurt the sentiments of Hindus and followers of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and had the potential to disturb communal harmony.Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis also weighed in the issue and said that the comparison was condemnable and asserted the Congress leader must feel ashamed of himself.Meanwhile, Congress leader Sachin Sawant y accused the BJP of “double standards” and pursuing a polarisation agenda after Sapkal faced criticism for ‘equating’ Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with Tipu Sultan. In a statement, the Congress spokesperson cited several instances to claim that BJP leaders had earlier supported or endorsed references to 18th-century Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan in public spaces and official forums. He referred to resolutions in civic bodies in Akola and Mumbai, as well as past instances where BJP leaders had allegedly praised or associated with the historical figure, to argue that the party’s current opposition was politically motivated. The BJP earlier admired Tipu Sultan, but now calls him bad for its polarisation agenda. “What should this hypocrisy be called? Tipu Sultan used to wear a ring bearing the name of Lord Ram,” Sawant claimed. The Congress leader also accused the ruling party of engaging in “distorted religious politics” and attempting to polarise voters, while reiterating the party’s criticism of the BJP’s stand on the issue.

Ex-Bhiwandi mayor held in 11-yr-old land deal case | Thane News

BHIWANDI: Former Bhiwandi mayor Vilas Patil has been arrested by the Thane Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in connection with an 11-year-old land transaction case involving properties worth several crores of rupees.Although the transactions date back over a decade, the case was reportedly registered in June last year in relation to two separate land deals from 2015. Patil was taken into custody on Saturday morning and later produced before a Bhiwandi court, which remanded him in police custody. The arrest has sparked debate, given Patil’s reputation as a strategist in Bhiwandi politics. Often described as a ‘kingmaker,’ Patil has in the past played a role in shaping equations in the civic body. The 90-seat Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation has seen a fractured mandate. No single party has secured a majority, resulting in negotiations among political groups. According to sources, Congress, with 30 corporators, along with NCP (SP) with 12 seats and SP with 6 had initially proposed a ‘Bhiwandi Secular Alliance,’ claiming support from 48 members. But SP’s six corporators later reportedly declined to back Congress, demanding the mayor’s post. On the other side, BJP, with 22 corporators, and Shiv Sena with 12 have been reaching out to smaller parties and independents to secure the numbers. Patil is chief of the Konark Vikas Aghadi, which has four corporators; it also has the support of one independent. Amid reports of SP distancing itself from the ‘secular’ alliance, Patil was said to be working on an alternative strategy. According to sources, Patil had been attempting to regain influence in the mayoral race by reaching out to Sena’s 12, NCP (SP)’s 12, Bhiwandi Vikas Aghadi’s 4 corporators and by bringing some of BJP’s corporators too with him.Patil’s arrest in this scenario has added a twist to post-poll alliance-building efforts in Bhiwandi.Political observers said Patil has previously demonstrated an ability to influence outcomes despite limited representation. In 2019, his party secured four seats, yet Patil engineered a coalition by bringing together 18 Congress corporators and 20 BJP members, facilitating election of his wife Pratibha Patil as mayor. Both Vilas and Pratibha Patil have served as mayors.Analysts said Patil once shared cordial relations with BJP. This equation was reflected in 2019, when BJP corporators extended support that helped Patil’s camp secure the mayor’s post.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday endorsed India as the perfect host for the AI Impact Summit 2026 starting Sunday, praising the nation’s growing global influence and successful economy. The first-ever AI summit in the Global South will be held from February 16-20, bringing together world leaders, tech CEOs, and policymakers to discuss artificial intelligence’s future while ensuring its benefits reach everyone globally. In an exclusive interview with PTI, Guterres strongly backed India’s initiative, saying “I strongly congratulate India for organising this Summit. It’s absolutely essential that AI develops itself to the benefit of everybody, everywhere and that countries in the Global South are part of the benefits of AI.”

India’s AI Rise Gets Global Push As UN Chief Praises Leadership, Nvidia CEO Predicts Job Surge

The UN chief warned against AI becoming a privilege of developed nations or limited to superpowers like the US and China. He emphasized that AI must serve as “a universal instrument for the benefit of humankind.”Speaking about India’s role in global affairs, Guterres praised the country’s position as a key emerging economy. He highlighted recent developments like India’s trade agreement with the European Union as positive steps toward true global multipolarity. “The role of India, (which) is today a very successful emerging economy that is having a bigger and bigger role in not only the global economy but in its influence in global affairs, India is the right place to have this Summit and to make sure that AI (is) being discussed in depth, in all its enormous potential and also in all its risks, but that AI belongs to the whole world and not only to a few,” he said.Further praising India, he added, “I see India in the centre of those emerging economies, and this is something I would be delighted to discuss with Prime Minister Modi because I have a lot of hope for the role that India can play in shaping this multipolar world.”The UN chief expressed his “frustration” with the Security Council’s ineffectiveness and called for fundamental reforms to better represent today’s world, referring to India playing a central role in shaping a multipolar world order.“There are two things we need to avoid in the world. We need to avoid the system in which there is total hegemony by only one power or a system in which the world is divided between two superpowers,” Guterres also said.Guterres also shared his personal appreciation for India, describing his fascination with the country’s rich history and cultural influence. He mentioned how he’s currently reading about India’s historical impact on various regions, from China to Southeast Asia and even the Mediterranean during the Roman Empire. The summit will see presence from various world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and tech leaders like Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. The summit will also feature other UN leaders, including Human Rights Commissioner Volker Turk and Technology Envoy Amandeep Singh Gill, focusing on the summit’s core themes of ‘People, Planet and Progress’.
