Maharashtra 100 percentiler moved to Mumbai from Vadodara to train for JEE | Mumbai News

Mumbai: When Madhav Viradiya moved from Vadodara to Mumbai two years ago to prepare for JEE, topping Maharashtra was not something he had allowed himself to imagine. The plan was simple and familiar to thousands of engineering aspirants: relocate, train hard and hope for a good rank. But when the answer key for JEE (Main) 2026 was released, the numbers told a different story. Madhav had scored 286 out of 300 — and a bonus awarded for an incorrect question pushed his score to 291, sealing a perfect 100 percentile and the state top rank. The JEE (Main) 2026 results, declared on Monday, produced 12 candidates with a 100 percentile. Rajasthan led with three toppers, followed by Andhra Pradesh with two, while Bihar, Telangana, Odisha, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana and Maharashtra had one topper each.

For Madhav, engineering was a natural choice. His father is an engineer and his elder brother studies at IIT Jodhpur. He moved to Mumbai with his mother and enrolled at Narayana e-Techno School, which has now produced Maharashtra’s 100 percentiler for the third year in a row. “This is the third consecutive year we have a 100 percentile and the state topper from the same campus,” said Siddhesh Naik, dean (academics).Madhav says his JEE preparation began in Class 10, though the grind intensified after Class 11. Alongside JEE training, he also appeared for astronomy Olympiads in Classes XI and XII. “Preparing for JEE is tough,” he told TOI. “I sacrificed a lot — meeting friends rarely, very little time for fun. Initially it felt punishing, but I got used to it. I studied around 10 to 12 hours a day.”His achievement comes against the backdrop of a massive national cohort. Over 13.55 lakh candidates registered for Paper 1 (BE/BTech), though only 13.04 lakh appeared for the exam, reflecting the familiar drop between registration and attendance.Men continued to dominate the pool, with 8.87 lakh male registrations compared to 4.67 lakh female candidates, a pattern that held across General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST categories. The OBC-NCL category formed the largest block of candidates, followed by the General category, while Scheduled Tribe candidates remained the smallest group.

The hidden MAGA message in Marco Rubio’s ‘civilisational erasure’ warning to Europe | World News

The hidden MAGA message in Marco Rubio's 'civilisational erasure' warning to Europe

There’s a hilarious BBC skit titled The Treaty of Westphalia (part of it’s the Complete History of Everything) which imagines the dialogues between European superpowers as they divide the continent, taking digs at each other’s fish-eating habits (pickled herring), bonding over the desire to kick German arse, figuring out how to split Luxembourg, and wondering whether they ought to have a common currency.Great Britain, for its part, says it is more interested in its colony in America. This leads the lead negotiator to wonder what good America is other than “tobacco, potatoes, and the high-grade narcotics” that you are fond of (while pointing at France, played by Hugh Laurie). Of course, that particular joke becomes wonderfully time-layered because years later Hugh Laurie would play Dr Gregory House, a version of Sherlock Holmes with whom he shares both a manic desire to solve cases and a drug addiction. Of course, a longer historical joke is how Britain’s “new colony” is the one dictating Europe’s fate centuries later. While Western Europe — since 1945 — has becoming increasingly dependent on America, in time the Monroe Doctrine gave way to the Donroe Doctrine, which is simply Trump doing whatever he wants.Read: The real Trump Doctrine Since his return from political exile — something even Napoleon couldn’t do — Trump has gone out of his way to treat Europe the way it once treated the rest of world: like a body bag without impunity. Throughout history, Europeans have been adept at using civilisational language to create a grammar of violence to justify its barbarisms. Land grabs were Crusades to restore Christian lands. Colonialism was a White Man’s Burden, not a ploy to sell opium and take slaves. Trump is largely immune to such niceties of linguistics but Marco Rubio, his Secretary of State, National Security Advisor, and the most competent man in the Trump administration is a bit of the dyed-in-the-wool Republican which explains why he took a more conciliatory tone at this year’s Munich Security Conference.

End of history: Marco Rubio edition

For decades after the Cold War till 9/11, Western policymakers lived under what might be called the Fukuyama spell: the belief that, whatever turbulence the world produced, liberal democracy would win upcoming battles: economic, ecumenic, and, ideological. For the uninitiated, the argument that political theorist Francis Fukuyama espoused in The End of History was that liberal democracy, powered by capitalism and free markets, would remain undefeated, that no rival system could hope to challenge that hegemony. Many folks disagreed.

End of History?

The most famous of them was Samuel Huntington, who argued in The Clash of Civilisations that the future axis of conflicts would not be ideological but civilisational. He even handpicked a few civilisations which he believed would challenge Western hegemony: the Orthodox order led by Russia, the Sinic order led by China, the Islamic world, and the Hindu civilisation centred in India. That civilisational pushback is no longer theoretical. China has risen not by copying Western liberal democracy but by strengthening a distinct political model rooted in civilisational continuity with a mix of cafeteria communism or capitalism. Russia has returned somewhat to its Orthodox roots and is flexing its muscle. India’s rise is also tied to the rediscovery of its civilisational identity rather than buying into Western constructs. Even across the Islamic world, political rhetoric increasingly speaks the language of cultural authenticity rather than ideological alignment. And even within Europe, Islam has become a spanner in its liberal order which has hastened the right of right-wing populism across Europe and America. Without mentioning Fukuyama or Huntington or any civilisation by name, Rubio took a hammer to the so-called rules-based international order in Munich. “We convinced ourselves that we had entered the end of history — that every nation would eventually become a liberal democracy,’ he said. From that assumption flowed a series of choices: Western governments came to believe that “trade would replace geopolitics” and that international institutions could substitute for national sovereignty. It didn’t factor in the rise of other civilisational forces. In a speech reminiscent of someone reminding a chicken that it has descended from dinosaurs, Rubio evoked Europe’s greatness, reminding it that it was the land of Beethoven and the Beatles, before laying the blame for Europe’s plight on deindustrialisation, mass migration, climate orthodoxy, and excessive dependence on international institutions. Thankfully, he didn’t mention wokeism by name. He argued: “Acting together in this way, we will not just help recover a sane foreign policy. It will restore to us a clearer sense of ourselves. It will restore a place in the world, and in so doing, it will rebuke and deter the forces of civilizational erasure that today menace both America and Europe alike.”Calling America a “child of Europe”, he signed off: “We should be proud of what we achieved together in the last century, but now we must confront and embrace the opportunities of a new one — because yesterday is over, the future is inevitable, and our destiny together awaits.”

Europe hears the ultimatum

For its part, most European leaders publicly celebrated the remarks, seeing them as a thaw in relations after last year’s JD Vance speech, which was far blunter. Privately, however, European officials understood the subtext perfectly. One EU official cautioned, telling Politico: “It is a milder way of telling us that the time of unicorns riding bicycles across rainbows laced with tofu and almond milk is over. This is not simply about being reassured or not. It is about whether we want to live in reality or in an artificial la la land of big announcements.”The notion, in truth, was very simple — and exactly what Rubio left unsaid: Join us, or else.Last year, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had jokingly referred to Trump as “daddy”. Since then, Europeans have tried to show greater independence. But beneath Rubio’s civilisational rhetoric lies the same strategic warning. Speaking of civilisational language, in India’s capital there is a rustic phrase often used during street fights which politely questions the true nature of one’s patriarchal lineage: “Tu janta hai tera baap kaun hai…”At Munich, Rubio was politely reminding Europe who was daddy, and what would happen if America decided to stop being said daddy. While reminding Europe of its history, he also politely reminded it that what Rubio is perhaps telling Europe — exactly what Trump and Co think of them — is that they are on the verge of irrelevance. Join Trump and Co and return to that civilisational parity, but only if one is willing to bend the knee.

Marco Rubio - T800

The Treaty of Westphalia was a long time ago. The days when Europe could sail the world and challenge anyone is long gone. The world will no longer fight – or even care for Europe’s wars – and call them World Wars. Instead, the shoe is now on the other foot and Rubio is asking Europe if it wants to be part of that history or fade into irrelevance. Just a tad more politely than Trump ever did. He is essentially quoting the T-800 from Terminator 2: Come with me if you want to leave. Whose Trumpian version is: come with us or face civilisational erasure.

Sri Lanka 104/1 in 11.5 Overs | AUS vs SL Live Score, T20 World Cup 2026: Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka drive Sri Lanka forward vs Australia

Australia vs Sri Lanka Live Score, T20 World Cup 2026: Skipper Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head scored fifties, but a clinical bowling display from Sri Lanka reduced visitors to 181 all out in 20 overs in the 30th match of the ICC Men’s World Cup 2026 at the Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy on Monday.

Asked to bat first on a pacy wicket, skipper Marsh, who returned after an injury break, went all around the ground with opener Travis Head, stitching an opening partnership of 104 runs off 52 deliveries. Australia recorded their fourth-highest Power-play total in T20 World Cup history, scoring 70/0 in the first six overs.

Marsh (54) and Head (56) showcased their power-hitting skills, taking all the bowlers to cleaners, including a 20-run sixth over that put pressure on the co-hosts. This aggressive play not only lit up Pallekele but also left Sri Lanka struggling, with Matheesha Pathirana having to leave the field due to a left leg injury.

Head, being the aggressor, brought up his fifty in 27 deliveries but soon lost his wicket to Dushan Hemantha, carving it to long-off in an attempt for a maximum. However, Marsh continued his demolishing act, and he too brought his fifty in 25 deliveries and followed Head’s suit as he was trapped in front by Hemantha again after Dunith Wellalage removed Cameron Green for mere 3 runs.

Sri Lankan spinners were key, including Hemantha, Wellalage, and Kamindu Mendis, who removed dangerous Tim David (6) with a flighted delivery.

The momentum changed quickly as the hosts applied pressure with steady spin bowling. Australia fell behind and reached 136/4 at the end of 14 overs. With each dot ball and wicket, the crowd supported Sri Lanka, cheering loudly and boosting the energy in the stadium.

Josh Inglis and Glenn Maxwell looked to counterattack and managed to get some, but Maxwell was undone by Pathum Nissanka’s screamer after he had dropped a sitter off Dushmantha Chameera in the previous over. Guiding the backward point, Nissanka jumped on his left to take a blinder after Maxwell (22) looked to play it over him. Hemantha ended his spell with figures of 3/37, which is now his best in T20Is.

Australia completely lost their ground in the last overs, losing the last eight wickets for 72 runs.

‘India hears from foreign leaders first’: Congress jabs PM Modi’s upcoming Israel visit

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday jabbed the Centre after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Israel, saying India was learning about its own government’s decisions from foreign leaders.PM Modi is set to travel to Israel on a two-day visit from February 25 to 26, news agency PTI repeorted citing sources. The visit was first mentioned by Netanyahu while addressing the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organisations on Sunday.Reacting to this, Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh in a post on X wrote, “India hears of the halt to Operation Sindoor first from the US Secretary of State. India hears of the India-US trade deal first from the US President.”“Just now India has heard of Prime Minister Modi’s dates for his visit to Israel first from Mr. Netanyahu – who has reduced Gaza to rubble and dust and is now dispossessing and displacing more Palestinians in the occupied West Bank,” Ramesh added. The Congress remarks also referred to the recently concluded interim India-US trade agreement, which was first announced by US President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform earlier this month. The party alleged that key diplomatic and trade decisions were being communicated abroad before being formally shared in India.“Parliament address on the anvil. Who’s coming here next week? Narendra Modi,” Netanyahu said at the gathering, highlighting what he described as a “tremendous alliance” between India and Israel.Meanwhile, a source in Jerusalem told PTI that PM Modi’s visit is “likely to be short from February 25 to 26”, but added that “its impact is deep given the popularity PM Modi enjoys not only in Israel but around the world”.The programme for the visit is still being worked out. However, PM Modi is expected to address the Israeli Knesset during his stay and discuss bilateral and regional issues. This will be his second visit to Israel, after his landmark trip in July 2017, the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Jewish state.Netanyahu, speaking about the upcoming visit, described India as “enormously powerful” and “enormously popular” and said both sides would discuss expanding cooperation.India has consistently supported a “two-state solution” to the Israel-Gaza conflict, while also maintaining a strategic partnership with Israel. Last year, PM Modi and Netanyahu held a telephonic conversation and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. PM Modi had then said, “Spoke with my friend Prime Minister Netanyahu. We reviewed progress in the India-Israel Strategic Partnership and agreed to further strengthen our cooperation. Also reaffirmed our shared commitment to zero tolerance for terrorism. India supports all efforts aimed at achieving a just and durable peace in the region.”Netanyahu’s own visit to India has been on hold since 2023 following the October 7 Hamas attacks, which disrupted planned engagements.

India’s exports to US drop 22% due to Trump’s 50% tariffs; overall trade data suggests signs of resilient market diversification

India’s exports to US drop 22% due to Trump’s 50% tariffs; overall trade data suggests signs of resilient market diversification

India’s exports to the US also fell by 21.77% to $6.6 billion in January, largely due to the 50% tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration. (AI image)

India’s merchandise exports grew marginally in January to $36.56 billion, up 0.61%. On the other hand, imports rose sharply by 19.2% to $71.24 billion, compared to $59.77 billion in the same period last year. As a result, the country’s trade deficit widened to $34.68 billion in January.Exports continued to remain on an upward trajectory in both goods and services segments. According to Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, the total exports of goods and services are expected to cross $860 billion during the current financial year. For the April to January period, exports increased by 2.22% to $366.63 billion.

Trump tariffs hit India’s exports to US

India’s exports to the US also fell by 21.77% to $6.6 billion in January, largely due to the 50% tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration. The US imposed a broad 50% tariff on Indian goods entering its market from August 27. The two countries have since concluded an interim trade arrangement under which the US removed 25% penal tariffs on Indian products from February 7, while reciprocal tariffs are set to be reduced to 18% from 25%. India’s exports are now competitively placed among regional peers.Exports had also contracted in September, October and December last year, although shipments had seen a growth of 22.61% in November. Imports from the United States, meanwhile, increased by 23.71% to $4.5 billion in January, the data showed.During the April to January period of the current financial year, India’s exports to the US rose by 5.85% to $72.46 billion, while imports grew by 13.87% to $43.92 billion.Exports to China surged by 55.65% to $1.63 billion during January, while imports from China rose 16.67% to $12.23 billion. For the April-January period of the fiscal year, exports to China increased by 38.37% to $15.88 billion, whereas imports expanded by 13.82% to $108.18 billion.India’s exports to countries including the UAE, Netherlands, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Hong Kong, Spain, Belgium, Malaysia and Vietnam recorded positive growth during the month under review. In contrast, shipments to the UK, Bangladesh, Singapore, Australia, France and Brazil declined. On the import side, inflows fell from countries such as Russia, Iraq, Korea, Germany, Thailand and Australia, while imports increased from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Singapore, Japan and Indonesia. India primarily imports gold from Switzerland, and purchases from the country jumped sharply by 836.85% in January to $3.95 billion.

India’s Diversifying Exports Basket

According to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), the latest trade figures for January 2026 reflect the significant impact of US tariffs on India’s export performance, while also indicating early signs of diversification into other markets.“Shipments to the United States followed a clear three-phase pattern between April 2025 and January 2026. After a brief uptick in May, exports fell steadily from $8.3 billion in June to $5.5 billion in September as tariff pressures intensified. A short-lived recovery followed, with exports rising to $6.3 billion in October and $7.0 billion in November, but the rebound faded when hopes of a quick trade deal did not materialise. Exports slipped again to $6.9 billion in December and $6.6 billion in January. With Washington expected to cut reciprocal tariffs on most Indian goods from 50% to 18% this week, we anticipate a swift recovery in shipments,” said GTRI in a note. The broader data suggest that the slowdown is largely concentrated in shipments to the US rather than reflecting a global decline. “Exports to the rest of the world remained resilient, edging up from $29.9 billion to $30.0 billion (+0.3%). The figures suggest that tariff barriers in the US market have driven India’s recent export slowdown, even as exporters begin cautiously expanding beyond their largest single market,” GTRI added.

First solar eclipse of 2026 is on February 17: Why the Moon won’t fully cover the Sun and how the ‘ring of fire’ appears |

First solar eclipse of 2026 is on February 17: Why the Moon won’t fully cover the Sun and how the ‘ring of fire’ appears

On 17 February 2026, skywatchers will get a chance to see one of the most striking types of solar eclipses: an annular eclipse, better known as a ‘ring of fire’. Unlike a total solar eclipse, where the Moon completely blocks the Sun, the Moon will leave a slim, glowing ring around its dark silhouette. The Moon doesn’t orbit Earth in a perfect circle. Its path is slightly oval, which means its distance from Earth constantly changes. When the Moon is closer, it can completely cover the Sun’s disc, creating a total eclipse. But tomorrow, the Moon is a bit farther away. Experts say it’s just far enough that it appears slightly smaller than the Sun in the sky. So when it slides in front of the Sun, it can’t cover it fully, as reported by the BBC.

How ‘ring of fire’ appears: Understanding annularity

Annularity is the term astronomers use to describe the moment the Moon is in front of the Sun but doesn’t fully obscure it. It comes from the Latin word annulus, which means ring. The Sun forms a thin, fiery ring around the Moon, giving the event its dramatic nickname, the ‘ring of fire’.During annularity, the Sun is not completely blocked, so the sky never goes fully dark. Experts say the light dims, shadows sharpen, and the atmosphere feels different. Some people describe it as twilight in the middle of the day. But unlike total eclipses, where temperatures drop, and stars can appear briefly, annular eclipses are subtler. The length of annularity depends on several factors:

  • The Moon’s distance
  • The Sun’s position
  • The observer’s location on Earth

For tomorrow, the full ring is only visible from a narrow path across Antarctica.

Why only some places see the full eclipse

Every solar eclipse has a path.

  • For total eclipses, it’s called the path of totality.
  • For annular eclipses, it’s called the path of annularity.

It is basically the corridor on Earth where the Moon appears perfectly sized to create the ring. Outside that path, observers will only see a partial eclipse. Experts note that the path is narrow because the Moon’s shadow is cone-shaped. Antarctica happens to be in that perfect spot tomorrow, which is why only a handful of people and research station crews will witness the full effect.

Solar Eclipse 2026: Where and when to catch February’s ‘ring of fire’

Tomorrow, the sun will briefly transform into a stunning “ring of fire” during an annular solar eclipse. This happens when the moon moves between Earth and the sun, leaving only a slim outer ring of sunlight visible. At the peak of the eclipse, the fiery ring will be visible for up to 2 minutes and 20 seconds. Here’s how the eclipse will unfold, according to Time and Date:

  • Partial eclipse begins — 4:56 am EST (0956 GMT)
  • Maximum “ring of fire” — 7:12 am EST (1212 GMT)
  • Partial eclipse ends — 9:27 am EST (1427 GMT)

The path of annulariy, where the moon will cover nearly all of the sun, is tiny and mostly over Antarctica, stretching roughly 2,661 miles long and 383 miles wide. Only observers within that narrow corridor will see the full “ring of fire.” People elsewhere in Antarctica, as well as parts of southern Africa and the southern tip of South America, will witness a partial eclipse, with much of the sun still visible.Quick tip: Never look directly at the Sun without proper solar eclipse glasses, even during annularity or partial phases. Ordinary sunglasses are not enough.

WATCH: Irfan Pathan trolls Pakistan fans with fun dance video after India’s dominant T20 World Cup 2026 victory

The high-octane rivalry between India and Pakistan reached a fever pitch this Sunday as the Men in Blue secured a resounding 61-run victory at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. While the action on the field was clinical, the post-match celebrations on social media have stolen the spotlight. Former Indian all-rounder and 2007 T20 World Cup hero, Irfan Pathan, has once again become the centre of a viral storm, playfully teasing Pakistani fans with a celebratory dance that has set the internet ablaze.

Irfan Pathan’s viral dance video adds spice after India’s emphatic T20 World Cup 2026 triumph over Pakistan

As the final Pakistani wicket fell in Colombo, Pathan took to Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) to share his joy in his trademark cheeky style. The veteran cricketer posted a video of himself grooving to the popular Bollywood track Afghan Jalebi’, a song that has become his go-to anthem for celebrating victories against the arch-rivals.

Captioning the video with a provocative Kaisa raha Sunday? (How was your Sunday?), Pathan didn’t stop there. He followed up with another post on X, directly addressing the “padosiyo” (neighbors) by asking, Padosiyo… Sunday kaisa raha? This playful jab refers to the long-standing trend of India dominating Pakistan in World Cup matches scheduled on Sundays.

The video quickly garnered millions of views, drawing massive engagement from jubilant Indian supporters while sparking a flurry of reactions from disappointed fans across the border. Pathan’s “Sunday” taunts have become a recurring tradition, often rubbing salt into the wounds of the opposition after high-stakes encounters. His choice of ‘Afghan Jalebi’, a nod to his previous celebrations during the Asia Cup, serves as a reminder of India’s consistent supremacy in the shortest format of the game.

Dominant India qualifies for Super 8 stage in T20 World Cup 2026

Beyond the social media banter, the victory marked a significant milestone for the Indian team led by Suryakumar Yadav. With this 61-run triumph, India have officially qualified for the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026, maintaining an unbeaten streak in Group A with six points from three matches.

The foundation of the win was laid by a blistering performance from Ishan Kishan, who decimated the Pakistani bowling attack with a 40-ball 77. Despite a spin-heavy strategy from Pakistan—which saw them bowl a record-equalling 18 overs of spin—India managed to post a competitive total of 175/7.

The second half of the game belonged entirely to the Indian bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya dismantled the top order early, leaving Pakistan reeling. The Men in Green were eventually bundled out for a mere 114 runs in 18 overs. This victory extends India’s formidable head-to-head record against Pakistan in T20 World Cups to 8-1, further cementing their status as tournament favourites. While India prepare for the next round, Pakistan now faces a must-win scenario against Namibia to keep their semi-final hopes alive.

Ramadan Mubarak 2026: Top 50 Ramzan Wishes, Messages, Quotes and Greetings to share with your loved ones

The holy month of Ramadan is almost here, bringing that familiar mix of excitement, reflection, and community spirit to Muslims worldwide! As the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, Ramadan 2026 kicks off around February 18-19 in India—confirmed by the crescent moon sighting on February 17. India typically starts a day after Saudi Arabia, where the moon often appears first. This sacred time, one of Islam’s five pillars– alongside Shahada, Salat, Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj– calls for fasting from dawn (suhoor) to sunset (iftar)—no food, drink, or water in between. It’s about spiritual reset: extra prayers in mosques, Quran reading, charity (zakat), and self-discipline. However, exemptions exist for the ill, pregnant, elderly, or travellers (make up days later). The month culminates in Eid ul-Fitr on March 19-20 (Shawwal 1), a joyous “Festival of Breaking the Fast” with prayers, feasts, and when no fasting is allowed. To help you wish your loved ones on Ramadan, here we list some Ramzan wishes, messages, quotes and greetings to share with them:

Mumbai: The Walkers Path from Thakur Village, Kandivli West, to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) is likely to be shut down. Residents of Thakur Village, Kandivli West, on Monday submitted a written complaint about a road coming up in SGNP from the Thakur Village end.“We were informed that the BEST buses will now ply from this end of SGNP and not the main entrance at Borivli. The walkers, on the other hand, will have to go to the main entrance to access the park,” said a resident.Work on the road started last week. “We do not know if permission was granted for this road. The manner in which the soil around the trees is being removed means the trees are unlikely to survive. The JCBs also affected the wildlife in the vicinity, particularly a deer family that frequents the area,” said a resident requesting anonymity. Anita Patil, chief conservator and director, SGNP, did not respond to TOI’s queries. The BEST has cancelled a bus route A-188 from Borivli East railway station to Kanheri Caves in SGNP. In a press release, BEST said this was done to protect wildlife. Tribals complained that the stopping of the bus route impacted their children’s schooling.
