New Zealand vs Canada, T20 World Cup 2026: MA Chidambaram Stadium Pitch Report, T20I Stats and Records

New Zealand will look to bounce back from their recent setback and confirm their place in the Super Eight stage when they face Canada in their final Group D fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Tuesday.

The Black Caps began their campaign confidently, registering convincing wins over Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Having arrived well-prepared for subcontinental conditions, they appeared settled and balanced. However, a defeat against a formidable South African side exposed cracks in their lineup, particularly in the bowling department.

Canada, meanwhile, enter the contest eager to salvage pride. The North American side has shown flashes of promise, particularly through their spin options, but has struggled with consistency and adapting to subcontinental conditions. Losses to South Africa and the UAE exposed their limited experience against top-tier opposition. To challenge New Zealand, Canada will need sharper bowling plans and improved execution in key moments.

MA Chidambaram Stadium Pitch Report

The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai has traditionally been known as a paradise for spinners, but in recent times the surface has behaved more evenly. Turn is still very much part of the game, so slow bowlers should remain influential, yet the pitch is no longer one-sided. Batters who apply themselves and rotate strike can score freely once they settle in, while pacers can also get something out of the surface, especially with disciplined lines.

Overall, it looks set to offer a fair battle between bat and ball rather than heavily favouring one discipline. Because chasing on a wearing Chepauk pitch can become tricky as the game progresses, captains winning the toss may prefer to bat first, put runs on the board, and then let their bowlers – particularly the spinners – apply pressure in the second innings.

‘In the lap of the gods’: How Australia can still reach Super 8s in the T20 World Cup despite Sri Lanka heartbreak

NEW DELHI: A shattered Mitchell Marsh did not hide his emotions after Australia crashed to a crushing eight-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka in a must-win clash at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Monday, conceding his side’s fate in the tournament is now out of their hands.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!Australia posted 181 after a blazing start but were blown away by a sensational chase led by Pathum Nissanka, whose unbeaten century sealed Sri Lanka’s place in the Super 8s and left the former champions staring at an early exit.“It is a devastated group. We’re in the lap of the gods now, I think, with the way it’s shaped up,” Marsh said in a brutally honest assessment. “There’s a lot of emotion in the rooms right now. We haven’t been at our best… we’re a disappointed bunch at the moment.”

T20 World Cup: India humiliate Pakistan again

Blazing start, bitter finishAt the halfway stage of their innings, Australia looked firmly in control. Marsh (54) and Travis Head (56) powered their side to a commanding 110/2, setting the platform for a massive total. But what followed was a dramatic collapse in momentum, as Sri Lanka’s bowlers tightened the screws.“Well, I thought it was a competitive total at the halfway mark. There’s no doubt we probably left ourselves a few short after the start that we had. So that’s disappointing,” Marsh admitted. “We know that at our best we can make big scores. And we just lost our way a little bit there towards the back-end. Couldn’t get a partnership going and Sri Lanka bowled really well.”He added with resignation: “Coming off, we knew we were a few short… not much else to say other than Sri Lanka outplayed us tonight.”Sri Lanka made Australia pay dearly. Nissanka’s breathtaking 100 not out off just 52 balls turned the chase into a statement, as Australia’s bowlers had no answers on a night when everything seemed to slip away.Qualification hopes hang by a threadThe defeat marked Australia’s second consecutive loss and left them in a precarious position in Group B. With just one win from three matches, their Super 8 hopes now hinge on other results — particularly the crucial clash between Zimbabwe and Ireland.Marsh admitted the team could only watch and hope.“We watch the Zimbabwe-Ireland game and we hope… but yeah, we’re a disappointed bunch at the moment,” he said.

T20 World Cup: How Australia can still qualify for Super 8s

The qualification equation is tense and unforgiving. If Zimbabwe beat Ireland on Tuesday, Australia will be eliminated from the tournament. However, an Ireland victory will keep Australia’s hopes alive and open up a three-way fight for the remaining Super 8 spot.In that scenario, Zimbabwe’s final group match against Sri Lanka on February 19 will become decisive. A Zimbabwe win over the co-hosts will take them through to the Super 8s alongside Sri Lanka, ending Australia’s chances regardless of other results. But if Zimbabwe lose to Sri Lanka — and Ireland have already beaten Zimbabwe — then Zimbabwe and Ireland will both finish on four points, bringing net run rate into play to determine the second qualifier from the group.Australia, who face Oman on February 20 in their final match, will then enter the contest with a clear net run rate equation. They will need a convincing win and a favourable swing in numbers to stay alive and secure a dramatic late qualification.

T20 World Cup: Steve Smith added to Australia squad ahead of must-win Sri Lanka clash | Cricket News

T20 World Cup: Steve Smith added to Australia squad ahead of must-win Sri Lanka clash
Steve Smith (Getty Images)

NEW DELHI: Steve Smith has been drafted into Australia’s T20 World Cup squad to replace the spot left vacant by Josh Hazlewood and is likely to feature in their must-win clash against Sri Lanka on Monday. Smith reached Sri Lanka last week and became eligible for selection after the International Cricket Council cleared his inclusion, completing Australia’s 15-man squad.Sean Abbott had initially been summoned as cover for Hazlewood, who pulled out on the eve of the tournament, but the pacer was never officially added to the squad, leaving a vacancy.

Axar Patel press conference: ‘We see them as a team, don’t see rivalry’ after India beat Pakistan

Smith responded to an SOS last week, flying to Sri Lanka after captain and regular opener Mitchell Marsh was struck by a throw-down during batting practice in Colombo. With Marsh — who has missed Australia’s first two matches — still doubtful for Monday’s encounter in Kandy due to bleeding from a testicle, Smith is poised to open the innings.“ICC regulations stipulate any squad change must be submitted and activated at least one day prior to a match,” said Australia selector Tony Dodemaide.“With Steve here, along with some uncertainty around Mitch and Marcus Stoinis, it made sense he is activated and available for selection in time for the match, if required.”The in-form Smith remains one of Australia’s most seasoned performers and a strong player of spin.He was controversially left out of the original T20 World Cup squad despite his explosive run in the Big Bash League as an opener.“Smitty’s obviously here, so if he gets his chance, he’ll be ready to go. He’s the ultimate professional,” Australia all-rounder Stoinis told reporters in Kandy late Sunday.Australia are already without injured frontline pacers Pat Cummins and Hazlewood.Power-hitter Tim David has only recently returned from a hamstring tear sustained in December, while Stoinis hurt his hand while fielding during the shock loss to Zimbabwe — a result that pushed Australia to the brink of elimination. If Australia fall to Sri Lanka in Group B, it would mark their second defeat. A Zimbabwe win over Ireland on Tuesday or Sri Lanka on Thursday would then knock out the 2021 champions.Stoinis, however, indicated he expects to be fit for the decisive fixture.“The hand’s pretty good,” Stoinis said.“Got the scan and there’s no break there or anything like that, so it’s just a bit battered and bruised, much better than I thought, to be honest.”

‘Terrible mistake’: Ashwin exposes Pakistan’s big blunder vs India | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Former India spin-bowling all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin came down hard on Pakistan following their comprehensive defeat to the Men in Blue in the 2026 T20 World Cup, identifying the toss as the turning point of the contest.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!India registered a commanding 61-run win in Colombo, and Ashwin felt Pakistan’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss handed India a decisive edge on a surface where chasing has been challenging throughout the tournament.

Mike Hesson press conference: ‘Ishan took the game away from us’ after India beat Pakistan

“Where did they win to lose the plot? Pakistan lost the game when they opted to bowl first after winning the toss because we saw the match between Australia and Zimbabwe. Australia struggled to get 170. When we see IPL matches, teams win easily if they need 100 runs off the last 10 overs. But it’s not happening in this World Cup. In Premadasa Stadium, you can’t chase 100 in ten overs. The way Pakistan deals with pressure, India are 100 times better in that aspect. I don’t think Pakistan are there. Honestly, Pakistan have become tactically better under Salman Agha and Mike Hesson. But the way they brought Shaheen Afridi after Agha’s first over was a terrible mistake,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel Ash ki Baat.Ashwin also raised questions over Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha’s use of his bowlers in the powerplay, particularly the early introduction of Shaheen Afridi instead of exploring alternate match-ups.“You took Abhishek Sharma’s wicket, and he is leaking runs left, right and centre. We noted in the preview how dangerous Ishan Kishan is against left-arm seam. I feel cricketers need to be explained, ‘This is your match-up’. Data tells the truth. When you say Ishan is taking on left-arm seam, he is taking it on. I’m not saying don’t bowl left-arm seam to him, but they must do something different. If Shaheen was getting whacked, I would’ve loved to see him come round the wicket to the left-hander. He didn’t do it, and the second over should have been Saim Ayub.”He further criticised Pakistan’s failure to regain control in the death overs, pointing out how Afridi’s return spell allowed India to surge ahead.“The fast bowler released the pressure. India were 159 after 19 overs, and Afridi was brought again, and he leaked runs again. Afridi gave away 16 runs in the final over,” he added.India will wrap up their league-stage campaign against the Netherlands in Ahmedabad on Wednesday before shifting focus to the Super 8s.

NZ vs CAN Match Preview:

A fresh rivalry will begin in Chennai when New Zealand face Canada for the first time in T20Is in the thirty-first match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Tuesday, 17 February 2026, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Moreover, this Group D contest will start at 11:00 AM IST, and New Zealand will aim to bounce back quickly after their recent defeat. Meanwhile, Canada will step into a high-pressure challenge as they search for their first points. The Chepauk pitch usually supports spinners in morning conditions due to its grip and turn. Therefore, New Zealand will likely use their slow-bowling options to control the tempo and put Canada under early pressure.

New Zealand currently hold second place in the Group D points table with four points from three matches. In contrast, Canada remain at the bottom in fifth position with zero points, which increases the urgency for them. Furthermore, New Zealand come into this match after suffering a seven-wicket defeat against South Africa in Ahmedabad, where they failed to defend a competitive score. On the other hand, Canada arrive in Chennai after losing a close five-wicket contest against the UAE, where they conceded the match in the final over. Consequently, New Zealand will look to regain momentum, while Canada must produce a near-perfect performance to stay alive.

Mark Chapman fought hard for New Zealand in the last match by smashing 48 off 26 balls, while Daryl Mitchell added stability with 32. However, their bowlers could not stop South Africa from chasing successfully. Meanwhile, Canada received a strong effort from Harsh Thaker, who scored 50 off 41 balls to push the team to 150. Additionally, Saad Bin Zafar impressed with figures of 3 for 14, yet the bowlers still failed to defend the total. Since these teams have never played each other in T20Is, the contest carries uncertainty. Still, New Zealand possess more depth, and therefore they will enter as clear favourites in Chennai.
