US moves closer to tougher H-1B wage norms as proposal clears federal review

US moves closer to tougher H-1B wage norms as proposal clears federal review

The US has moved a step closer to revising wage rules for foreign workers after a proposed regulation affecting the H-1B visa and employment-based green card process cleared federal review – a development that could eventually push up minimum wage requirements for sponsored workers. The proposal was submitted to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review two months ago, and the rule is likely to be published shortly for public comment before finalisation.Prevailing wages determine the minimum salary US employers must pay foreign employees based on occupation and location. Any change to this framework directly affects hiring costs, eligibility thresholds and sponsorship decisions. While the detailed regulatory text has not yet been released publicly, immigration experts expect the proposal to modify how wage levels are calculated and potentially increase required salary benchmarks across multiple occupations.During Donald Trump’s earlier tenure as president, the department of labour introduced a rule in Oct 2020 that significantly hiked wages for H-1B workers and employment-based green card applicants by 40% to 100%.The final rule was successfully challenged in court, and was later withdrawn. While the Biden administration had sought to issue a fresh set of wage rules, the plan was eventually put on the backburner. The move is significant for Indian professionals, who account for the overwhelming majority of H-1B visa holders and form a large share of employment-based green card applicants in the US, particularly in the technology and healthcare sectors.According to a report issued by the USCIS of the total H-1B applications (including extensions) approved in fiscal 2024, 71%, or about 2.8 lakh, were for Indian beneficiaries. While the public comment window for any proposed rule is open for 30 to 60 days, immigration experts believe the comment period may be restricted to 30 days to expedite finalisation of the wage rule. The revised framework could apply to H-1B beneficiaries selected in the 2027 season. Registrations for the H-1B cap visa are scheduled to open next month. TOI has reported earlier that sponsoring employers are not gung-ho about the H-1B cap season, and the wage rules could be the final dent in the coffin.

ICC confirms fixtures of Women’s T20 World Cup 2026; India and Pakistan to face off in Edgbaston

The stage is set for a historic summer of cricket as the International Cricket Council (ICC) officially unveiled the full schedule for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. Taking place in England and Wales from June 12 to July 5, this 10th edition marks a significant milestone as the largest tournament in the history of women’s T20 cricket, featuring an expanded field of 12 nations.

The action kicks off with a high-octane opening fixture at Edgbaston, where the hosts and 2009 champions, England, will take on Sri Lanka on June 12. This year’s lineup sees the addition of four qualifying powerhouses, Bangladesh, Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands, who secured their spots following a rigorous qualifying tournament in Nepal. They join the elite ranks of defending champions New Zealand, six-time winners Australia, India, West Indies, South Africa, and Pakistan.

High-stakes rivalry: India and Pakistan to lock horns at Edgbaston

Of all the group-stage fixtures, none carries the weight of expectation quite like the clash between India and Pakistan. The arch-rivals are scheduled to face off on Sunday, June 14, at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Given the massive diaspora and the historical intensity of this rivalry, the venue is expected to be a complete sell-out.

Historically, the Indian women’s team has held a dominant upper hand in this fixture, remaining unbeaten against Pakistan in all eight of their previous T20 World Cup encounters. However, the stakes have never been higher. India, the reigning ODI World Cup winners, enters the tournament with a surge of momentum, while Pakistan look to rewrite history on English soil. This “Super Sunday” match is not just about points on the table; it is a battle of nerves in front of a global audience that recently saw viewership records shattered during their 2025 ODI World Cup meeting.

The tournament will span 24 days across seven iconic venues, including Headingley, Old Trafford, and The Oval, before reaching its grand crescendo at Lord’s Cricket Ground on July 5.

Ranji Trophy final: Shubham Pundir’s century, Yawer Hassan’s 88 put J&K in command vs Karnataka | Cricket News

Ranji Trophy final: Shubham Pundir's century, Yawer Hassan's 88 put J&K in command vs Karnataka

HUBBALLI: For the first hour of the Ranji Trophy title contest here on Tuesday, the Karnataka pace trio of Prasidh Krishna, Vidhyadhar Patil and Vyshak Vijaykumar, tested the Jammu and Kashmir batters. They got movement off the seam and probed the openers who were beaten on several occasions.Qamran Iqbal (6) and Yawer Hassan (88) lived dangerously and the former— having come in as a replacement for Shubham Khajuria, who was ruled out after suffering a lower-back spasm — perished during that passage of play, when he edged a good length delivery which moved away to KL Rahul at second slip.Thereafter, J&K seized control. Riding on an unbeaten century from Shubham Pundir (117; 221b; 12×4; 2×6) and contributions from Hassan and the in-form Abdul Samad (52 batting), the visitors closed the opening day at the KSCA Rajnagar Stadium on a commanding 284/2 in 87 overs.

T20 World Cup: Sahibzada Farman press conference ahead of Pakistan vs England

Pundir joined Hassan in the 11th over and the pair stitched together a crucial 139-run partnership that shifted the momentum decisively.Hassan began cautiously before capitalising on loose deliveries. A couple of half volleys from Vyshak allowed him to break free with successive cover drives to the boundary. Pundir too counterattacked effectively, taking on Prasidh during his otherwise disciplined spells. Their strokeplay signalled a clear shift in approach as they moved from survival to dominance.Karnataka’s cause was further hurt by lapses in the field. The hosts burned a couple of unsuccessful reviews and spilled more than one chance at crucial moments. The introduction of spin brought little respite as Pundir swept leggie Shreyas Gopal off his first delivery. As the partnership flourished, Karnataka were pushed on to the defensive. Field placements spread out and the bowlers struggled to maintain consistent lengths, often offering the batters scoring opportunities. Hassan brought up his maiden first-class fifty in style, reaching the milestone off 77 balls with a late cut to the backward-point boundary. His innings included ten boundaries, many of them classical strokes. The post-lunch session underlined Karnataka’s inconsistency, especially with their lengths, while wicketkeeper Kruthik Krishna missed a stumping chance off Pundir, adding to the mounting frustration in the home camp.Prasidh, the most effective among the bowlers, eventually broke the stand with a back of a length delivery that Hassan edged to Rahul in the slips.J&K skipper Paras Dogra endured a painful outing. He was struck on the neck by a Prasidh bouncer and continued after treatment but looked uncomfortable. Substitute fielder KV Aneesh later dropped him off Vyshak before Dogra was hit again, this time on the hand forcing him to retire hurt. From there on, Abdul Samad and Pundir accelerated. The pair punished the spinners in the final session, with Pundir bringing up his fourth first-class century in style by stepping out to loft Shikhar Shetty over deep midwicket for six.By stumps, J&K had seized the initiative, with Pundir and Samad promising more runs on a day that belonged to the visitors. While Karnataka went with an unchanged squad, J&K were forced to make two changes with Vanshaj Sharma joining Khajuria on the sidelines.SCOREBOARDJammu and Kashmir (I Innings): Qamran Iqbal c Rahul b Prasidh 6, Yawer Hassan c Rahul b Prasidh 88, Shubham Pundir (batting) 117, Paras Dogra (retd hurt) 9, Abdul Samad (batting) 52. Class 5 language, maths scholarship exam ‘above age level’: Teachers | Mumbai News

Pune: Maharashtra State Primary Teachers’ Committee has raised serious concerns about the difficulty level and structure the state scholarship exam held on Sunday. Its members said several questions in language and mathematics papers were far beyond the cognitive level and prescribed syllabus of Class 5 students, leading to stress and loss of confidence among examinees. In a formal representation submitted to Maharashtra State Examination Council chairman Nandakumar Bedse and commissioner Mahesh Chothe, the teachers’ body cited examples where students had to process lengthy passages containing multiple clauses and solve multi-step mathematical problems that demanded advanced reasoning skills not typically expected at the primary level. Teachers said many students struggled to interpret the questions within the allotted time, indicating a mismatch between the exam design and age-appropriate learning outcomes. Bedse said, “We will take cognisance of the letter and understand what can be done. But, it is not possible to make changes in the exam that has been conducted. The difficulty level was uniform across papers. If any student has scored less, it will be the case for all who took the exam.” “The purpose of a scholarship examination is to identify talent, not to discourage children at an early age,” said Vijay Kombe, state president of the committee. “When questions become excessively complex for their developmental stage, the exam stops measuring ability and begins testing endurance.” The organisation warned that such experiences could negatively affect young learners. Educational psychology emphasises that assessments at an early age should build confidence, strengthen conceptual understanding and encourage curiosity. Instead, teachers observed anxiety, confusion and fear of exams among several students after the test. Kombe said the issue also impacts teachers working in zilla parishad schools, where many institutions ensure full student participation in scholarship exams. “If the difficulty level is not carefully calibrated, it undermines students’ morale and the efforts of teachers who prepare them,” he added. The committee has urged the examination council to adopt a more scientific approach to paper setting by involving experienced teachers, education experts and educational psychologists.

Accelerating growth, India on upward trajectory: RBI

Accelerating growth, India on upward trajectory: RBI

MUMBAI: Growth has accelerated in recent years and the Indian economy is assured of a continuously improving economic trajectory, deputy governor Poonam Gupta said.Delivering the 14th Foundation Day Lecture at the Centre for Development Studies, Gupta said India’s expansion has become more durable and predictable. “High, stable and accelerating growth, and more predictable economic outcomes have become the hallmarks of the Indian economy.” She added, “The Indian economy has slowly but surely accelerated at the pace of 0.03 percentage points a year,” and that “the acceleration in per capita income growth has been even faster.”

‘Accelerating growth, India on upward trajectory’

Meanwhile, a report from State Bank of India’s economic department said that the economy is likely to have grown around 8.1% in the third quarter under the revised FY23 base on the back of a 8% growth in the first half.Gupta outlined forward-looking drivers of expansion anchored in demographics and policy continuity. “Going by international experience, these trends are likely to continue in the years to come, aiding a rapid increase in per capita incomes.” She said demographic support would endure, further noting that “the working age population is likely to increase for several more decades.” “It is expected that the recently announced India-USA trade deal, India-EU free trade agreement and the newly-signed or prospective new trade agreements will further strengthen the current account.” she added.
