‘Play like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’: R Ashwin’s bold take as India march into Super 8 | Cricket News

India have completed their T20 World Cup group-stage assignments and now brace for a far sterner examination in the Super 8s. The defending champions will face tougher opposition in the next phase, including 2024 runners-up South Africa, the West Indies and Zimbabwe. So far, India have underlined their status as title holders by sweeping aside every challenge in the opening round. Speaking on Ash ki Baat, Ravichandran Ashwin lauded the team’s consistency but admitted that the performance against the Netherlands was not flawless. He pointed out that Suryakumar Yadav anchored the innings with care, while Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya and Rinku Singh were positioned to lift the scoring rate at the right moment. Ashwin emphasised that even when India are not at their sharpest, their overall strength makes them difficult to beat.

How Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma are hurting India | T20 World Cup

“Surya played a very diligent knock. For the acceleration point, Dube, Hardik, and Rinku were there. They knew they could catch up on the scoring rate. But India weren’t extremely good today (vs Netherlands) with the bat, not extremely efficient. But it is such a solid team that even on their ordinary day, they can put you away. They were below par, not at their best. But still, with Varun Chakaravarthy bowling so well, the Netherlands could not pick him. Jasprit Bumrah got swing in the Powerplay and bowled yorkers too,” he said on Ash ki Baat. Ashwin also discussed Tilak Varma’s approach in the shortest format, especially as he works his way back after injury. He underlined that T20 success does not always depend on brute force and highlighted the value of timing and placement. “Tilak Varma is coming back after an injury. We talk about power and strength, but sweet spot and timing are the basic essence of batting. Tilak is not a big power hitter. For him, timing and finding the sweet spot are most important. Please remember, you can play like Vaibhav (Sooryavanshi), but you can also play like Tilak, who relies on timing and picks the gaps,” Ashwin said. Elsewhere, Pakistan confirmed their Super Eights qualification with a win over Namibia, joining India from Group A. Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe progressed from Group B, the West Indies and England advanced from Group C, while South Africa and New Zealand moved ahead from Group D in the 20-team tournament. With Australia and New Zealand already assured of entry into the 2028 edition as co-hosts, all teams that have reached the Super Eights, including New Zealand alongside Australia, have now secured qualification for that event.

‘Diego Garcia would constitute legitimate target if …’: Iran tells UN it will respond ‘decisively’ to US aggression

‘Diego Garcia would constitute legitimate target if ...’: Iran tells UN it will respond 'decisively' to US aggression

Iran has warned the United States of retaliation if subjected to military aggression, saying all US bases and assets in the region would become “legitimate targets” in such a scenario. In a strongly worded letter addressed to the UN secretary general, António Guterres, and members of the security council, Iran accused the United States of issuing unlawful threats of force and urged the Council to act “without delay” to prevent further escalation. While reiterating that it “neither seeks tension nor war” and will not initiate any conflict, Iran made clear that it would respond if attacked.“In the event that it is subjected to military aggression, Iran will respond decisively and proportionately in the exercise of its inherent right of self-defence under Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations,” the letter stated. It added that in such circumstances, “all bases, facilities, and assets of the hostile force in the region would constitute legitimate targets” as part of Iran’s defensive response. Tehran said the United States would bear “full and direct responsibility” for any “unpredictable and uncontrolled consequences.”Iran urged the security council to use its authority and good offices to ensure that the US “immediately ceases its unlawful threats of the use of force.”Tehran also said it noted that it has engaged “constructively, with seriousness and in good faith” in nuclear talks with the US.The warning to the UN comes against a backdrop of rising military posturing and hardening rhetoric on both sides. On Thursday, Iran conducted its annual military drills with Russia, even as a second US aircraft carrier moved closer to the Middle East — a visible reminder of the growing strategic pressure in the region. The developments have underscored the fragile situation between both Washington and Tehran, as the two nations signal that they are prepared for conflict if nuclear negotiations collapse.US President Donald Trump has repeatedly cautioned Iran that failure to reach a deal would carry consequences. In his latest remarks, he suggested the window for diplomacy may be closing fast, saying he believes 10 to 15 days is “enough time” for Iran to reach an agreement.“It’s proven to be, over the years, not easy to make a meaningful deal with Iran, and we have to make a meaningful deal. Otherwise, bad things happen,” Trump said on Thursday. While there has been no official indication of imminent military action, the convergence of diplomatic deadlines, visible force deployments and escalating rhetoric has kept tensions high, placing US-Iran relations under intense international scrutiny.

WI-W vs SL-W, 1st ODI, Match Prediction: Who will win today’s game between West Indies Women and Sri Lanka Women?

The stage is set for an intriguing clash in the Caribbean as West Indies Women host Sri Lanka Women in the 1st ODI of their three-match series at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada.

With both teams eyeing crucial ICC Women’s Championship points, this match serves as a vital barometer for their 50-over form heading into a busy 2026 calendar.

West Indies Women: The return of the stars

The big news for the Maroon Warriors is the return of their captain, Hayley Matthews, who is back after a lengthy shoulder injury. The squad is bolstered by the presence of the legendary Deandra Dottin and Stafanie Taylor, giving them a massive edge in experience. Under Head Coach Shane Deitz, the Windies are seeking “revenge” after losing their previous ODI series to Sri Lanka in 2024.

Key player: Matthews. Her all-round ability to dominate with the bat and provide crucial breakthroughs with her off-spin makes her the undisputed MVP.

Sri Lanka Women: The giant killers

Ranked 6th in ODIs (above West Indies at 9th), Sri Lanka arrives with momentum and a settled core. Led by the powerhouse Chamari Athapaththu, the visitors rely heavily on her explosive starts. Their bowling attack is spin-heavy and disciplined, which could trouble the Windies’ middle order if they fail to rotate strike.

Key player: Kavisha Dilhari. She has evolved into a world-class all-rounder. Her ability to finish games with the bat and her handy off-breaks will be vital in Caribbean conditions.

West Indies Women vs Sri Lanka Women, 1st ODI: Match Details

  • Date and Time: February 20; 07:30 pm IST/ 02:00 pm GMT/ 10:00 am Local
  • Venue: National Cricket Stadium, St Georges, Grenada

National Cricket Stadium Pitch Report

The surface at St. George’s is traditionally known for being balanced but slightly leaning toward the bowlers as the game progresses. Historically, the pitch offers a good bounce early on, allowing batters to play their shots. While the new ball might zip around under the morning humidity, the track is expected to slow down significantly. Spinners from both sides—like Afy Fletcher and Inoka Ranaweera—will likely dictate the middle overs. Teams winning the toss often prefer to bowl first. The early morning moisture can assist seamers, and chasing has generally been more successful at this venue in limited-overs formats.

Chhattisgarh HC: No automatic bail for juveniles in heinous crimes

Raipur: Chhattisgarh HC has dismissed a juvenile’s appeal for bail in a 2025 murder case, saying such relief can’t be treated as an absolute or automatic rig-ht and release will “defeat the ends of justice” given the gravity of the offence.Justice Arvind Kumar Verma upheld earlier orders of Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) and a sessions court in Chhattisgarh’s Dhamtari, and held the HC was “not convinced” that a juvenile could claim bail without courts examining the nature of the offence.“JJB and the sessions court rightly prioritised child protection over routine bail in a heinous offence like murder. Such acts amount to a grave rupture of social order, violate the inherent dignity of childhood, and demand collective vigilance to restore moral balance,” Justice Verma observed in his Feb 13 judgment. The minor filed the criminal revision plea under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, challenging the order of the sessions court on Oct 31, 2025 rejecting bail. He allegedly stabbed Vikas Dhruv in Dhamtari following an altercation on June 6 last year. The minor’s counsel argued that the lower courts had failed to appreciate the reformative spirit of the 2015 law, and continued detention in an observation home would expose him to criminal influence. The counsel said the attack occurred in self-defence and that the accused had no prior criminal records and came from a poor family.Govt counsel Vivek Sharma contended that the lower courts had properly assessed the evidence, highlighting the serious nature of the crime.

NEW DELHI: India on Thursday attended the inaugural meeting of US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace on Gaza as an “observer” country, without joining the initiative that has been set up by Trump for the redevelopment of the Gaza Strip. India was represented at the meeting, held at the Donald J Trump Institute of Peace in Washington DC, by Chargé d’affaires at the Indian Embassy Namgya Khampa, reported PTI. Trump pledged $10 billion for the new “Board of Peace,” saying the United States would fund the initiative aimed at rebuilding Gaza, which was reduced to rubble by two years of war between Hamas and Israel. Trump will wield veto power over the “Board of Peace” and can remain its head even after leaving office, while countries seeking permanent membership instead of a two-year term will be required to pay $1 billion. Trump announced that the US will commit $10 billion to the Board, whose members include 27 nations such as Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. PM Narendra Modi was among the numerous global leaders that the US President had invited to join the board that was announced under the second phase of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. India was among the countries not present at a January 22 ceremony in Davos where Trump unveiled the Board of Peace that seeks to work towards bringing lasting peace to Gaza and possibly resolve other global conflicts. The Board of Peace is perceived as a rival to the UN. Trump has previously said that the Board of Peace “might” replace the UN, which he said has never lived up to its potential. The executive board, finalised on January 17, consists of a mix of diplomats and financiers, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Jared Kushner, and World Bank President Ajay Banga. While the US has outlined an initial $1 billion reconstruction package for housing and infrastructure, funding is strictly tied to security conditions.

The brokerage also shares its view on Nifty and Bank Nifty:Nifty OutlookThe index formed a sizable bearish candle on the daily chart and slipped below the lower boundary of the 25,500–26,000 consolidation range, indicating a decisive loss of short-term momentum. The sharp decline has brought Nifty close to its previous swing low, thereby shifting the near-term bias to cautious and signalling the need for stability at lower levels.Technically, the index has broken below both the 50Day EMA and the 21day EMA in a single move, reflecting strong selling pressure. The 200-day EMA, placed near 25,200, is now the next crucial short term support zone and appears vulnerable if follow-up selling persists in the coming sessions. On the downside, immediate supports are seen at 25,350 and 25,000, which may act as key cushions in case of further weakness. On the upside, resistance is placed at 25,650, followed by 25,720, where any pullback is likely to face selling pressure.Bank Nifty OutlookThe index surrendered most of the gains from the previous two sessions and formed a large bearish engulfing candle on the daily chart, indicating strong profit booking near all-time high levels. It witnessed sharp selling from the highs and eventually closed near the day’s low, reflecting sustained weakness throughout the session. The 21-day EMA, placed around 60,300, emerges as the key level to watch, as the index has found support near this average on multiple prior occasions. Immediate support is seen at 60,300, followed by 60,000.On the upside, near-term resistance is positioned at 61,500 and 61,750. In the near term, the index is likely to trade within a broad range of 60,000–61,500, and a decisive breakout on either side could trigger fresh directional momentum.
