Thala for a reason? Shivam Dube credits 'Mahi bhai' after match-winning performance against the Netherlands

Shivam Dube said guidance from former India captain MS Dhoni helped shape his batting approach after he played a match-winning 67-run knock in the last group-stage match of the T20 World Cup against Netherlands at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday.Dube said he had struggled against pace bowling early in his career, but advice from Dhoni on strike rotation and controlled intent helped him improve in pressure situations.

T20 World Cup | Shivam Dube press conference after India beat Netherlands

“When I first came into the IPL, I struggled against fast bowlers and wasn’t striking the ball cleanly. I realised that if I want to dominate at this level and I have the power, I needed to work on that aspect. I put in significant effort during the off-season. Mahi bhai told me that it’s not necessary to hit sixes every time. Boundaries and strike rotation are equally important.“That clarity has helped me. If I get a good ball, I look for a boundary or rotate strike. In the death overs, I will naturally go harder, but early in the innings, my focus is on smart intent,” Dube told Jio Hotstar, as cited by news agency IANS.Speaking about pressure situations, Dube said his focus is on batting according to the match scenario and staying till the end if required.“I don’t feel pressure; I focus on the situation. If wickets fall, my responsibility is to bat deep. If I stay till the end, I know I can add 10–15 crucial runs in the final over. I avoid taking unnecessary risks in the middle overs. If the situation demands stability, I rotate strike. If the platform is set, I’m ready to attack from the first ball,” he said.Dube walked in to bat when India were 69 for 3 after nine overs and stabilised the innings with a 66-run knock off 31 balls. He also contributed with the ball, taking two wickets for 35 runs in three overs. For his all-round performance, he was named player of the match.

“My blood pressure was 160. It was a wake-up call for me”: How this techie quit a lucrative IT job to build a ₹30-lakh organic brand

“My blood pressure was 160. It was a wake-up call for me”: How this techie quit a lucrative IT job to build a ₹30-lakh organic brand

What happens when a man decides to quit his high-paying IT job to become a farmer? But this is not another quit-your-job and get-rich-fast story. This is a story that began on a small terrace in Delhi where moringa seeds sprouted beside household greens turned the world of an engineer upside down and how. These moringa seeds were planted by Jitender Mann which did it as a small experiment to take care of his health. But then, he did not know his experiment would turn him into an entrepreneur and earn him name, fame and of course money.Today, Jitender along with his wife Sarla Mann is running a successful moringa farming and related products business from their ancestral village in Mehmudpur, Sonipat, Haryana. With this, the couple is generating nearly ₹30 lakh a year. They are selling organic products across India, the USA, and the UAE. But success has no shortcuts. To reach here, they worked hard every day and believed in themselves on the hardest days to keep going.Journey from techie to farmerBefore switching his career, Jitender used to work at one of India’s largest IT firms which earned him a steady salary (around a lakh per month). He worked there for over a decade and was comfortable. But as he entered his 40s, the city-life took a toll on his body. He started suffering from high blood pressure, continuous joint pains, and a chemical-rich food.“I was healthy in theory,” he later reflected in an interview in The Better India, “but what I consumed and how I lived was slowly breaking me. I am not an expert, but I believe everything is related to the food we eat.”Jitender had lived in cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Delhi. He observed one thing which was concerning: thyroid disorders and high blood pressure was a common issue everywhere. He, himself, was suffering from lifestyle diseases. “My blood pressure was 160. It was a wake-up call for me,” he added. This is when he decided to grow his own food and planted vegetables and moringa on his terrace. And moringa turned out to be a game changing idea. This drought-resilient tree is known among nutrition scientists for being rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Two years without returns and zero chemicals

In the year 2017, Jitender and Sarla decided to leave Delhi for good and move to their ancestral village. They gave up their life in the city and modern comforts along with a ₹1 lakh-per-month to grow their moringa. On their two acres of land, they planted moringa, not for money, not for fame, only for soil health and personal conviction. But what happened next was the turning point. For two years straight, they had no earnings at all.But the couple was adamant to not use chemicals and pesticides or any kind of synthetic fertilisers on their farm. Instead, they took care of the soil. They started working with nature. Some of the soil preparation practices they adopted are known for regenerative agriculture techniques. These techniques are now getting popular on an international level. “We were clear: this had to be chemical-free,” Sarla said, underlining that soil health was more important than anything else. So the couple embraced slow returns, no rush, no hurry, no pesticides. Two years later, they began harvesting leaves. They would dry them carefully, and make moringa powder under their brand, Husband Wife Farm. Initially, the sales were decent and mostly were from word of mouth. Their friends and neighbors were supportive of their cause. But their business expanded in urban wellness circuits in Delhi, Gurugram, Bengaluru and Mumbai, to name a few. What worked

Moringa

What worked for them was unlike other moringa brands who were competing for low cost, Jitender and Sarla talked about quality products which are not bitter, chemical free and fully traceable organic. They started selling leaf powder and capsules to beetroot mixes, all under the premium product section.By fiscal year 2024, the turnover was of around ₹30 lakh (domestic and international). Another remarkable aspect of their business was they never hired big marketing agencies. Most customers found them through honest testimonials and genuine changes in digestion and immunity.Today, Jitender is not only leading a business, he is leading a dialogue and changing narratives.

‘Appeasing policy’: Why Supreme Court flagged ‘freebies culture’ and cautioned states | India News

'Appeasing policy': Why Supreme Court flagged 'freebies culture' and cautioned states

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday raised serious concerns over the growing culture of ‘freebies’ across states , warning that indiscriminate distribution of such benefits could hamper economic development and strain state finances. The top court also cautioned states and asked whether such a culture, without drawing a distinction between the haves and the have-nots, would amount to an “appeasing policy.”Hearing a plea by Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Ltd, which plans to provide free electricity to all consumers regardless of their financial status, the court said welfare measures are justified for the poor, but extending them to everyone could weaken development efforts. Why SC flagged freebiesA bench led by Chief Justice India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, pointed out that many states already face revenue deficits yet continue to announce large-scale free schemes.“Most of the states in the country are revenue deficit states and yet they are offering such freebies” overlooking development, the bench said. The judges stressed that excessive spending on freebies could slow economic progress and reduce funds available for infrastructure, jobs, and long-term growth.“The economic development of the nation will be hampered by this kind of largesse distribution. Yes, it is the State’s duty to provide, but the ones who are enjoying freebies… is it not something that should be looked at?” Chief Justice of India Surya Kant verbally observed. The CJI also questioned whether states were using their revenue wisely.“States are running into deficit but still giving freebies. See, 25 per cent of the revenue you collect in a year, why can it not be used for the development of the State?”Concern over impact on work culture &financesThe bench warned that indiscriminate distribution of benefits could affect productivity and reduce incentives to work.“What kind of culture are we developing in India? It is understandable that as part of the welfare measure you want to provide to those who are incapable of pay the electricity charges,” the bench asked.“But without drawing a distinction between those who can afford and those who cannot, you start distributing. Will it not amount to an appeasing policy,” the CJI asked. The court also questioned the timing of the Tamil Nadu power firm’s proposal.“The states should work to open avenues for employment. If you start giving free food from morning to evening then free cycle, then free electricity then who will work and then what will happen to the work culture,” the CJI said.JusticeBagchi added that states must properly justify such spending in their budgets.“It’s not one State we are talking about, it’s about all States. It is planned expenditure. Why don’t you make Budget proposals and give justification that this is my outlay on unemployment of people?”Court issues notice but clarifies wider concernDespite its sharp observations, the Suprme Court issued notice to the Centre and other parties on the petition filed by the DMK government-run power utility challenging electricity rules. The court clarified that its concern was not limited to Tamil Nadu but applied to all states offering similar schemes without proper financial planning.Freebies: New currency of political power?A report by Aequitas Investments noted that freebies have increasingly become a major electoral strategy.“As political parties compete in what appears to be a race to the bottom, welfare schemes and ‘freebies’ have evolved from mere campaign promises to the new currency of political power,” the report said.

Beth Mooney breaks Meg Lanning’s all-time record to reach pinnacle of Australia Women’s T20I cricket in Canberra vs India

The energy at the Manuka Oval in Canberra is electric as India looks to seal a historic series win on Australian soil, headlined by a landmark moment as Beth Mooney breaks Meg Lanning’s all-time record to become her country’s most prolific T20I scorer. Following a clinical 21-run victory (DLS) in the series opener at Sydney, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and elected to bowl first, trusting her disciplined bowling unit to exploit the cool evening conditions once again. Australia, now led by Sophie Molineux, has a massive point to prove as they aim to keep the three-match series alive and fine-tune their preparations for the high-intensity season ahead.

Beth Mooney becomes Australia’s T20I queen after surpassing Meg Lanning during Canberra T20I

In the 10th over of the first innings, the Canberra crowd witnessed a historic milestone that cemented Mooney’s legacy as one of the greatest to play the game. With a controlled swipe to deep midwicket off Renuka Singh Thakur (9.5), Mooney took a single to reach 3,406 runs, officially surpassing the legendary Meg Lanning (3,405) to become Australia’s all-time leading run-scorer in Women’s T20Is. The southpaw, who has been a model of consistency since her debut in 2016, achieved this feat in her 114th match, anchoring a dominant 128-run opening partnership with the explosive Georgia Voll. While Voll took the aggressor’s role with a stunning 88, Mooney’s milestone provided the bedrock for Australia’s resurgence after their batting collapse in the first game.

Most Women’s T20I Runs for Australia

Rank Player Runs Scored
1 Beth Mooney 3,406*
2 Meg Lanning 3,405
3 Alyssa Healy 3,054
4 Ellyse Perry 2,193
5 Ashleigh Gardner 1,415
6 Elyse Villani 1,369

Georgia Voll’s masterclass powers Australia to a formidable 163/5

The Australian innings was defined by a spectacular breakout performance from Voll, who hammered a career-best 88 off just 57 balls to dismantle the Indian bowling attack. Partnering with the experienced Beth Mooney, Voll orchestrated a massive 128-run opening stand that saw Australia cruising at over nine runs per over for the majority of the first half.

Voll was particularly aggressive against the Indian spinners, using her reach to sweep and loft over the covers with clinical precision, reaching her half-century in just 31 deliveries. However, India managed a sensational comeback in the final five overs, triggered by Arundhati Reddy, who once again proved to be the partnership-breaker by dismissing both Mooney (46) and eventually Voll in the 17th over.

The death-overs were a showcase of tactical brilliance from the Indian seamers, as Renuka Singh removed Phoebe Litchfield before Sree Charani delivered a tight final over that included two run-outs on the last two balls. Australia, who looked poised to cross the 180-mark at one stage, were restricted to 163/5, leaving India with a clear but demanding target of 164 to claim their first-ever T20I series victory in Australia since 2016.

'Go to court, don't threaten people': Kerala BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar hits out at CM Vijayan over ‘The Kerala Story 2’

NEW DELHI: Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Thursday slammed chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan over his remarks opposing the sequel to The Kerala Story, accusing him of hypocrisy and attempting to distract people from governance issues.Speaking to ANI, Chandrasekhar said that the chief minister was reacting differently now compared to earlier instances involving freedom of expression.“Pinarayi Vijayan has 45 days more as Chief Minister, and he knows that on the 46th day, he is going to have to move his residence. When a movie came out which is against the BJP, we did not protest or say anything. He quoted Freedom of Expression. How is it that when somebody else makes a movie against his political thinking, it suddenly becomes a problem? This is hypocrisy. This is basically an attempt to distract the people of Kerala from his 10 years of failure,” he said.

Kerala CM Slams Jury: National Awards for The Kerala Story Are ‘Insult to Kerala’

The Kerala BJP chief asserted that filmmakers have the right to create content and that citizens have the right to choose what they watch.“I wanted to tell you, Pinarayi Vijayan, that nobody has appointed you protector. There is no need for you to act like you’re a protector of any community. Every Indian today, every Malayali, is given the same fundamental rights. Stop making fools out of people. This movie will be shown because just as much as you have the right to watch a movie, I have the right to watch a movie. Just as any director has the right to make a movie, this director also has the right to make a movie,” he added.Chandrasekhar also urged CM Vijayan not to create fear or threaten people over the film’s release.“If you have a problem with it, and if there is something illegal in the movie, go to court. But don’t try to threaten people. Don’t try to use your Chief Minister’s position to create fear amongst people that we will not allow,” he said.Earlier in the day, Vijayan expressed strong opposition to reports of a sequel to The Kerala Story. In a post on social media platform X, he alleged that the sequel was another attempt to spread communal discord in the state.“The reports regarding the release of a sequel to the hate-mongering film ‘The Kerala Story’ should be seen with utmost gravity. Having already seen through the communal agenda and blatant lies of the first part, Kerala will once again reject this attempt to demonise our secular fabric with contempt. It is shocking how fabricated narratives aimed at inciting communal discord receive a free pass, while critical expressions of art get gagged. We must stand united against these attempts to paint our land of harmony as a hub of terror. The truth shall always prevail,” Vijayan said. The makers recently released the trailer of The Kerala Story 2, which portrays Hindu women being trapped by Muslim men in the name of love. The film is written by Amarnath Jha and Vipul Amrutlal Shah and directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh. The film is scheduled to be released in theatres on February 27.
