'Devotion etched in our consciousness': PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi pays tribute to fallen soldiers on Pulwama attack anniversary

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to the soldiers, that were killed in the Pulwama attack 7 years ago calling them “brave heroes”.“Remembering the brave heroes who laid down their lives in Pulwama on this day in 2019. Their devotion, resolve and service to the nation remain forever etched in our collective consciousness. Every Indian draws strength from their enduring courage,” said PM Modi on X.Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi also remembered the soldiers saying, “My heartfelt tribute to our brave soldiers who were killed in the audacious terrorist attack in Pulwama in 2019. The nation shall forever remain indebted to them for their supreme sacrifice in the defence of Mother India.”Vice President CP Radhakrishnan also paid his tributes on the seventh anniversary of the attack. “I pay homage to the brave personnel who laid down their lives in the Pulwama terror attack. Their supreme sacrifice will forever remain etched in the nation’s memory and continues to inspire us to build a strong and secure India,” he said.On February 14, 2019, the Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir witnessed one of the deadliest terror attacks in Indian history. A convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) travelling along the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway was targeted in a suicide bombing, killing 40 personnel. The date has since been remembered as a “Black Day” in the country’s security narrative. The convoy consisted of 78 buses carrying nearly 2,500 CRPF personnel from Jammu to Srinagar when an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into one of the buses, causing massive casualties and destruction. The attack drew widespread international condemnation and led to an immediate tightening of security protocols across Jammu and Kashmir. The Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad claimed responsibility, stating that a suicide bomber carried out the assault, according to local media reports. In response, India initiated a series of counter-terror measures, most notably conducting airstrikes on alleged terror training camps across the border in Pakistan. The military action marked a sharp escalation in tensions between the two countries.Beyond its immediate impact, the Pulwama attack reignited global debate over cross-border terrorism, militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, and the broader security dynamics between India and Pakistan.

Mumbai loses Rs 155cr to digital arrest scams, 33% rise in 1 year | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: People in the city lost Rs 155 crore to digital arrest scams alone in 2025, a 33% surge compared to the previous year. The spike occurred despite a marginal dip in the number of registered cases, from 195 digital scams in 2024 to 191 in 2025. Investment scams, job frauds, and digital arrest scams collectively accounted for 28% of all cyber offenses in the city last year. Cybersecurity experts warn that access to AI tools has altered the criminal landscape and scams are likely to increase manifold.

Pune: NCP Picks, Online Scam Loss, Illegal Sub-Tenancy and More

“AI just turned cybercrime into something anyone can do. We are not talking about sophisticated crime syndicates anymore. Today, someone with a smartphone and access to plug-and-play AI models can run scams that used to require entire BPO-style operations. The barrier to entry has collapsed,” said Sundareshwar Krishnamurthy, partner & India cyber leader, PwC India. While law enforcement has intensified its crackdown, the battle remains uphill. Mumbai Police data indicates that the detection rate for investment, job, and digital arrest scams combined rose from 23% in 2024 to 29% in 2025. However, arrests are frequently limited to the “beneficiaries” operating mule accounts, while the masterminds continue to operate with impunity from overseas. “With AI-based calls, scam attempts are going to increase exponentially. We need specific legislation to address AI-driven crimes,” said cybersecurity expert Nikhil Mahadeshwar.Research conducted by PwC in 2023 in collaboration with Stop Scams UK highlights that AI tools can be utilised to sift through large volumes of data to identify potential victims and tailor fraudulent content to an individual’s specific vulnerabilities. For instance, AI tools can identify an individual’s employment details or family circumstances or where they have been on holiday recently to craft highly convincing personalised scam messages. The human cost of this technological shift is being felt most acutely by the elderly. Mahadeshwar pointed out that while govt awareness campaigns are ongoing, senior citizens remain uniquely vulnerable due to challenges in maintaining cyber hygiene. “Many struggle to comprehend what a malicious APK file is, or how to enable two-factor authentication, or verify if an email password has been compromised. This vulnerability is being exploited by scammers who are constantly evolving,” he said.In a recent case, fraudsters swindled a senior citizen of Rs 16 lakh by convincing him that he was the subject of an “NIA investigation into the Delhi blasts” and coercing him to download an encrypted communication platform which could conceal their digital trail.Despite a 5% dip in overall registration of cybercrime in Mumbai — from 5,087 cases in 2024 to 4,825 cases in 2025 — the financial impact is undeniable. Police data shows that Mumbaikars lost Rs 1,031 crore to all cybercrimes in 2025. DCP (cyber) Purushottam Karad has a simple piece of advice for the elderly: “There is no provision for digital arrest in Indian law. Don’t trust what a stranger online says.” To their families, he advises, “If a senior citizen behaves differently, talk to them and find out what is wrong.

IndiGo plans to hire over 1,000 pilots after December’s crew crunch

IndiGo plans to hire over 1,000 pilots after December's crew crunch

IndiGo, the country’s largest airline is set to go on a hiring spree, bringing over 1,000 pilots on board. This comes after the aviation giant faced massive operational disruption last December, when the company was forced to cancel more than 5,000 flights within seven days. The fresh intake will span trainee first officers, senior first officers and commanders. A recruitment notice shows the carrier is also ready to accept applicants without time on the Airbus A320, the workhorse aircraft across its network, ET reported.Under the updated framework, the number of landings permitted between 12 am and 6 am has been limited, while the mandatory weekly rest period for pilots has gone up.A review carried out by the irectorate General of Civil Aviation concluded that the airline had neither hired in line with the new rules nor accelerated its training capacity. This, the probe noted, resulted in pilots being stretched through repeated reassignments, lengthier duty spans and greater use of deadheading, in which crew are moved as passengers to operate flights elsewhere.

Stepping up expansion

A senior official, as cited by ET, maintained that IndiGo is now lining up a steady supply of cockpit crew to keep pace with rapid aircraft additions. The airline’s in-house system is currently upgrading about 20–25 first officers to captain each month. Now, alongside hiring, the carrier has begun adjusting its network planning to create more breathing space in daily operations. From almost no buffer in December, the margin has been raised to 3% this month. Standby crew availability has also been lifted to a minimum of 15%.Fleet expansion is continuing at a brisk rate, with roughly four aircraft joining the airline every month on average.Training remains a long lead activity. Trainee first officers require around six months before they are cleared to operate, while promotion to captaincy demands at least 1,500 hours of flying, though airlines may prescribe stricter benchmarks. While the regulator’s baseline requirement is three sets of pilots per aircraft, including one captain and one first officer, IndiGo’s intense utilisation levels push its need to well over twice that figure.Figures placed during the inquiry into the December episode showed the airline needed 2,422 captains but had 2,357.

DGCA findings

After the disruption, the watchdog stepped in with temporary relaxations, suspending night-duty restriction rules until February 10.In its assessment, the DGCA said there was an overriding focus on maximising utilisation of crew, aircraft, and network resources, which significantly reduced roster buffer margins. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation said that the airline structured its crew schedules to extract the longest possible duty hours, leaning heavily on deadheading, tail swaps and stretched work patterns while leaving very little room for recovery. It noted that such planning weakened roster integrity and hurt operational resilience.

Terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun murder plot: Accused Nikhil Gupta pleads guilty in US court

NEW DELHI: Nikhil Gupta, an Indian man accused of murder plot of Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, has pled guilty in a US court.Nikhil Gupta (54) pleaded guilty on Friday to charges of murder-for-hire, conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit money laundering before a Manhattan court, news agency Reuters reported. The charges together carry a maximum sentence of up to 40 years in prison, officials said.Gupta, who has been lodged in a Brooklyn jail since his extradition to the United States in June last year, entered the plea before US magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn. He had earlier pleaded not guilty after being extradited from the Czech Republic, where he was arrested in 2023. Gupta is accused of hiring a hitman for $100,000 to assassinate Pannun, a dual US-Canadian citizen, allegedly at the behest of an Indian government official identified by US authorities as Vikash Yadav. The plot collapsed after the purported hitman turned out to be an undercover federal agent.According to the US Department of Justice, Yadav allegedly roped in Gupta in May 2023 to coordinate the plan to kill Pannun in New York. The government also constituted a high-level committee in November 2023 to examine the US allegations. In January last year, just days before Donald Trump assumed office, the panel submitted its report recommending legal action against the official concerned, without naming him. The report said the individual’s “earlier criminal links and antecedents” had also surfaced during the enquiry.

WATCH: Kyle Klein does a John Cena after dismissing Shayan Jahangir in USA vs NED T20 World Cup 2026 clash

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 witnessed a dramatic early breakthrough when Netherlands pacer Kyle Klein produced a fiery moment that quickly went viral. During the USA vs Netherlands clash, Klein dismissed Shayan Jahangir with a peach of a delivery and followed it up with a ‘You can’t see me’ celebration — famously associated with WWE superstar John Cena. The animated send-off added extra spice to an already intense contest.

Kyle Klein’s iconic John Cena celebration after removing Shayan Jahangir

The moment came on the fifth ball of the third over. Charging in with rhythm, Klein bowled a 132.9 kph delivery that was fuller than a length and angled into the right-hander. There appeared to be just a hint of movement off the surface, enough to create uncertainty.

Jahangir, looking to break free, planted his feet and attempted an ambitious cross-batted swing. However, his feet remained cemented to the crease and the bat came down too late. The ball beat him on the outside edge and crashed into the stumps, sending the bails flying. It was a classic fast-bowler’s dismissal — pace, angle, and precision combining perfectly.

As the stumps lit up, Klein turned towards the batter and performed the iconic ‘You can’t see me’ hand gesture, reminiscent of Cena’s trademark move. The celebration instantly grabbed attention from fans and commentators alike, adding theatre to the contest.

USA recover to post commanding total

Despite the early setback, USA recovered brilliantly to put up a formidable total of 196/6 in their 20 overs. The innings was anchored by a splendid knock from Saiteja Mukkamalla, who played with maturity and flair.

Mukkamalla smashed 79 off 51 deliveries, striking five boundaries and four towering sixes. He paced his innings expertly, accelerating through the middle overs and keeping the scoreboard ticking under pressure. His ability to find gaps and clear the ropes at crucial junctures gave USA the momentum they needed.

Adding late fireworks was Shubham Ranjane, who delivered a powerful unbeaten cameo. Ranjane hammered 48 off just 24 balls, including three fours and two sixes. His calculated aggression in the death overs ensured USA finished strongly, turning a competitive score into a daunting one.

Bas de Leede leads Dutch bowling effort

For the Netherlands, Bas de Leede emerged as the standout bowler. The all-rounder picked up 3 wickets for 37 runs in his four overs, providing crucial breakthroughs at important stages of the innings. His variations and control kept the American batters in check whenever partnerships threatened to grow too large.

However, the Dutch bowlers struggled collectively to contain USA’s aggressive approach, especially in the final five overs where the run rate surged dramatically.

New National Pension System payout options on the cards, says Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) is designing post-retirement income products to outperform conventional annuities while sustaining the double-digit accumulation returns under the National Pension System, chairman Sivasubramanian Ramann said.Addressing the PFRDA Retire Smart India event in association with TOI, Ramann said the brief goes beyond tweaks. “The biggest challenge that PFRDA has got is to put a pension account in each Indian’s hand,” he said, as the regulator pushes corporate adoption.Current rules require 20% of corpus to buy insurer annuities, which are often criticised for modest, inflexible payouts. The regulator is weighing alternatives. “We have to create a product which goes beyond what we call the accumulation phase,” Ramann said, signalling fixed-period, structured payouts rather than life-only streams. The proposed Minimum Assured Return Scheme offers predictable, risk-averse returns. Sponsors cover shortfalls; subscribers share surpluses. Higher fees and defined lock-ins may support long-term sustainability, creating a capital-protected retirement option for new and existing investors. To widen reach, the regulator is going digital-first with low-friction onboarding through UPI apps, targeting informal and self-employed workers. Platform tie-ups with food delivery, ride-hailing, and home services firms aim to enable small, regular contributions for long-term savings by workers “we typically see at our doorstep”.On performance, even conservative NPS options delivered about 9.3% annual returns over a decade, while others posted double digits. An expert committee is charting a future asset-allocation roadmap, including exposure to new asset classes over time.Succession planning is being tightened. Recordkeeping agencies will enable seamless nominee transfers. On tax treatment, he said, “By some unfortunate circumstance, if you do not survive in this world up to 85, you are very well placed within NPS to transfer those assets from your account to your successor’s account.” Such transfers avoid capital gains because “NPS is not a capital asset, it is income.”Speaking to the media, Ramann said that to improve returns, the regulator is looking at allowing new asset classes and is even considering permitting participation in project loans. The PFRDA launched the NPS Swasthya Pension Scheme in Jan as a pilot project to integrate pension savings with healthcare needs. It allows subscribers to save for medical emergencies and save on insurance costs by opting only for a top-up cover over the Swasthya corpus.Ramann said that the focus has pivoted toward private-sector, self-employed and informal workers, while easing features for existing subscribers. There has been some tweaking of the govt pension, and employees can now opt for higher equity exposure under auto choice. Voluntary subscribers face a lower mandatory annuity purchase of 20% versus 40% earlier. The system now recognises 15 years as “long-term savings,” allows participation till 85, and adds a partial-withdrawal window.

Mumbai: Nearly one-and-a-half months after a snake was found inside a toilet of the Mumbai–Solapur Vande Bharat Express, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Central Railway arrested a 37-year-old man from Mumbra on Wednesday. The accused, Jagan Arjun Bhale, a resident of Nashik district, was traced through CCTV footage and apprehended following a tip-off, officials said.

Mumbai: Metro Pillar Collapse, Flyover Safety, Train Snake Incident & More

The incident had occurred in coach C-16 of train no. 22225 when passengers spotted a snake inside the washroom at Karjat and alerted railway staff. They inspected the toilet but could not locate the reptile. A second check at Pune also yielded nothing. Authorities then sealed the toilet and informed the control room. The reptile — a rat snake measuring two to two-and-a-half ft — was finally rescued at Solapur with the help of a snake catcher, said Central Railway chief public relations officer Swapnil Nila. Investigators examined CCTV footage which showed Bhale releasing the snake inside the toilet after boarding the train at Thane. Officials said Bhale confessed during interrogation that he released the snake to create panic among passengers.
