The International Cricket Council (ICC) has concluded a constructive and open dialogue with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), covering issues including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and the broader growth of cricket in South Asia, the governing body said in a media release. In particular, the discussions acknowledged the disappointment surrounding Bangladesh’s absence from the T20 World Cup, while reaffirming the BCB’s status as a valued Full Member of the ICC. The global governing body emphasised Bangladesh’s rich cricketing heritage and its critical role in growing the sport, highlighting the country’s vibrant fanbase of over 200 million supporters. The ICC also made clear that the national team’s non-participation would not have any long-term impact on cricket in Bangladesh.

T20 World Cup Groups Explained: Who Can Reach the Super 8

Key outcomes from the discussions include: No penalties for BCB: The ICC confirmed that Bangladesh will face no financial, sporting, or administrative sanctions in relation to its T20 World Cup absence. The BCB also retains the right to approach the Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) under ICC regulations if it wishes. The ICC reiterated its commitment to neutrality and fairness, focusing on facilitation rather than punishment. ICC event hosting 2028–2031: As part of the agreement, Bangladesh has been confirmed to host an ICC event before the 2031 Men’s Cricket World Cup, subject to standard ICC hosting requirements. This decision reflects confidence in Bangladesh’s ability to stage international tournaments and demonstrates the ICC’s commitment to distributing hosting opportunities across its member nations. ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta said, “Bangladesh’s absence from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is regrettable, but it does not alter our commitment to the country as a core cricketing nation. We remain focused on growing the sport sustainably in Bangladesh, creating opportunities for players and fans, and investing in its long-term competitiveness and global integration.” The ICC, PCB, and BCB, alongside other member boards, reaffirmed their dedication to dialogue, cooperation, and constructive engagement, underlining the importance of unity and integrity in the global cricket community.

Anthropic's senior exec Mrinank Sharma announces he is leaving, shares a long resignation note on Twitter; says: Throughout my time in the company, I have repeatedly seen how hard it is to ...

Anthropic’s Safeguards Research Team head Mrinank Sharma has resigned. Mrinank shared a long resignation note on X, formerly Twitter. In the note, Mrinank said that today (February 9) is his last day. “Today is my last day at Anthropic. I resigned. Here is the letter I shared with my colleagues, explaining my decision,” wrote Mrinank in the X post. Anthropic announced its ‘Safeguards Research Team’ in February 2025. Introducing the team in a blog post, the company said, “Following the release of Constitutional Classifiers, we are excited to announce Anthropic’s new Safeguards Research Team. We’ll be focusing on topics such as jailbreak robustness, automated red teaming, and developing effective monitoring techniques, both for model misuse and misalignment. The team is currently led by Mrinank Sharma, and current members are Erik Jones, Meg Tong, Jerry Wei, Euan Ong, Alwin Peng, Ted Sumers, Taesung Lee, Giulio Zhou, and Scott Goodfriend.”In the long note addressed to his colleagues at Anthropic, Mrinank Sharma shared his journey at the company. “I arrived in San Francisco two years ago, having wrapped up my PhD and wanting to contribute to AI safety,” he wrote. The letter also talks about the dilemma that he seems to be facing and that may have triggered his decision to leave the company. Here’s the resignation letter shared by Mrinank.Dear Colleagues,I’ve decided to leave Anthropic. My last day will be February 9th.Thank you. There is so much here that inspires and has inspired me. To name some of those things: a sincere desire and drive to show up in such a challenging situation, and aspire to contribute in an impactful and high-integrity way; a willingness to make difficult decisions and stand for what is good; an unreasonable amount of intellectual brilliance and determination; and, of course, the considerable kindness that pervades our culture.I’ve achieved what I wanted to here. I arrived in San Francisco two years ago, having wrapped up my PhD and wanting to contribute to AI safety. I feel lucky to have been able to contribute to what I have here: understanding Al sycophancy and its causes; developing defences to reduce risks from Al-assisted bioterrorism; actually putting those defences into production; and writing one of the first AI safety cases. I’m especially proud of my recent efforts to help us live our values via internal transparency mechanisms; and also my final project on understanding how Al assistants could make us less human or distort our humanity. Thank you for your trust.Nevertheless, it is clear to me that the time has come to move on. I continuously find myself reckoning with our situation. The world is in peril. And not just from Al, or bioweapons, but from a whole series of interconnected crises unfolding in this very moment.’ We appear to be approaching a threshold where our wisdom must grow in equal measure to our capacity to affect the world, lest we face the consequences. Moreover, throughout my time here, I’ve repeatedly seen how hard it is to truly let our values govern our actions. I’ve seen this within myself, within the organization, where we constantly face pressures to set aside what matters most, and throughout broader society too.It is through holding this situation and listening as best I can that what I must do becomes clear.’ I want to contribute in a way that feels fully in my integrity, and that allows me to bring to bear more of my particularities. I want to explore the questions that feel truly essential to me, the questions that David Whyte would say “have no right to go away”, the questions that Rilke implores us to”live”. For me, this means leaving. What comes next, I do not know. I think fondly of the famous Zen quote “not knowing is most intimate”. My intention is to create space to set aside the structures that have held me these past years, and see what might emerge in their absence. I feel called to writing that addresses and engages fully with the place we find ourselves, and that places poetic truth alongside scientific truth as equally valid ways of knowing, both of which I believe have something essential to contribute when developing new technology.* I hope to explore a poetry degree and devote myself to the practice of courageous speech. I am also excited to deepen my practice of facilitation, coaching, community building, and group work. We shall see what unfolds.Thank you, and goodbye. I’ve learnt so much from being here and I wish you the best. I’ll leave you with one of my favourite poems, The Way It Is by William Stafford.Good Luck, Mrinank

‘Historically new level’: US cuts tariffs on Bangladeshi goods to 19% under new trade deal

‘Historically new level’: US cuts tariffs on Bangladeshi goods to 19% under new trade deal

The United States and Bangladesh on Monday reached an Agreement on Reciprocal Trade as both sides seek to deepen their “bilateral economic relationship”. Under the arrangement, Bangladesh’s exports to the American market will face a 19% tariff, slightly below the earlier rate of 20%. The signing brought together US trade representative Jamieson Greer and Bangladesh’s adviser overseeing commerce, textiles and jute, and civil aviation and tourism, Sheikh Bashir Uddin. Bangladesh commerce secretary Mahbubur Rahman and assistant US trade representative Brendan Lynch were also present.Speaking on the agreement, Greer said, “Under President Trump’s leadership, the United States is pursuing a trade policy that delivers real results for American workers and businesses, strengthening our economic and security partnerships abroad.” He further added, “today’s signing of the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade with Bangladesh is the first in South Asia and marks a meaningful step forward in opening markets, addressing trade barriers, and creating new opportunities for American exporters.Bangladesh’s chief adviser Muhammad Yunus said that the agreement indicates a “historically new level” in relations between the two nations. The latest deal also reduces the reciprocal tariff from the initial figure of 37% and the 20% that had been in place since August last year. As part of the deal, Washington has also committed to establish a pathway for certain textile and apparel shipments from Bangladesh made with US cotton and man-made fibre to enter the United States at a zero reciprocal tariff. “The reduction of reciprocal tariff will grant further advantage to our exporters, while zero reciprocal tariff on specific textile and apparel exports from Bangladesh using US inputs will give substantial added impetus to our garments sector”, said NSA Rahman, Bangladesh’s chief negotiator.Dhaka said that the agreement was approved by the council of advisers approved and the pact will come into force once both governments issue formal notifications.

Delhi Police register FIR over circulation of an unpublished book of ex-Army chief Naravane | India News

Unpublished book of ex-Army chief MM Naravane

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Monday registered an FIR over the circulation of an unpublished book of ex-Chief of Army Staff General Naravane on social media, cops told news agency PTI.A row erupted over General Naravane’s book after Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi cited excerpts from the former Army chief’s unpublished memoir and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “not fulfilling responsibility” during the 2020 India-China military clashes in Ladakh.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Likely To Face No-Confidence Motion After Naravane Memoir Row

Speaking to reporters outside the Parliament the Congress leader said, “The speaker is saying that this book does not exist, Rajnath ji has said this book does not exist. This is Naravane ji’s book wherein he has written the account of Ladakh…Narendra Modi ji did not fulfil his responsibility.”Rahul Gandhi’s insistence on reading purported extracts from the yet-to-be-published Naravane’s book shone the spotlight on the rules and regulations that restrict senior military officials from revealing classified information or crucial leadership decisions even after retirement.Meanwhile, Penguin Random House, which holds the publishing rights, said the book has “not gone into publication. No copies of the book – in print or digital form – have been published, distributed, sold, or otherwise made available to the public” by them.“In light of recent public discourse and media reporting, Penguin Random House India would like to clarify that we hold the sole publishing rights for the book Four Stars of Destiny, a memoir by General Manoj Mukund Naravane, former Chief of the Indian Army. We wish to make it clear that the book has not gone into publication. No copies of the book – in print or digital form – have been published, distributed, sold, or otherwise made available to the public by Penguin Random House India,” the publishing house wrote on X.There has been no official word from the author or even the ministry on the status of the book.Senior military officials, particularly those dealing with classified information, are subject to regulations under the Official Secrets Act that restrict the publication of books or information even after retirement to prevent such classified material from becoming public. While a general one-year “cooling-off” period exists for taking up commercial or private employment, regulations for publishing secret content require prior government clearance.“Four Stars of Destiny”, a memoir of Naravane, who was Army chief from December 31, 2019, to April 30, 2022, remains unpublished due to pending clearance from the defence ministry regarding sensitive details on the 2020 Line of Actual Control (LAC) standoff and Agnipath scheme. If the said rules and regulations are violated, the government can take legal action and such violations can also lead to the withholding of part or all of the pension of the military official concerned, as per CCS (Pension) Rules. There are chances that if the memoir is published, it could “flare up” the LAC situation with China. In May-June 2020, Indian and Chinese troops engaged in violent face-offs along the LAC in eastern Ladakh and Sikkim, most notably during the June 15, 2020, clash in Galwan Valley that resulted in the death of 20 Indian soldiers. There were casualties on the Chinese side as well. This marked the deadliest confrontation in decades, leading to major troop escalations.Under the then General Naravane’s command, India and China held a series of ground-level talks that led to “disengagement” in a phased manner from the stand-off areas. As of today, the situation along LAC is characterised by a “thaw” following a series of disengagement agreements, yet high-level military forward deployment from both sides persists.

Ravi Shastri’s clear-cut challenge to Babar Azam ahead of PAK vs USA clash in T20 World Cup 2026

Babar Azam’s return to the T20 World Cup stage has sparked a massive debate following his sluggish 15 off 18 balls in Pakistan’s nervous opening win against the Netherlands on February 7. While Pakistan narrowly avoided a historic upset thanks to Faheem Ashraf’s explosive late-order hitting, Babar’s inability to rotate strike or find boundaries at No. 4 has left fans and experts questioning his fit in the modern T20 setup. As Pakistan prepares for their crucial second match against the USA on February 10, the pressure on Babar has reached a boiling point, with Shastri offering a blunt ‘intent-first’ roadmap to help the superstar rediscover his rhythm before the tournament progresses.

Ravi Shastri delivers direct challenge to Babar Azam ahead of PAK vs USA match in T20 World Cup 2026

Ravi Shastri believes Babar is currently fighting an internal battle against his own reputation rather than the bowlers. Speaking on The ICC Review, Shastri analyzed Babar’s current slump as a byproduct of his seniority, stating: “When you are at that stage of your career, there’s baggage. There’s a weight of expectation. People expect you to go out there and deliver.”

To counter this, Shastri’s advice was direct and almost reckless: “Get out there and in your first five balls, I don’t care if you get out, but I want you to make an effort to hit a couple of boundaries. Choose your spot, get into good positions, anticipate what the bowler is doing. You will feel a lot better and things might change.” By encouraging Babar to potentially sacrifice his wicket in search of early aggression, Shastri hopes the batter can ‘break the mental shackles’ that have led to his recent ‘turtle-paced’ strike rates.

T20 World Cup 2026: Shastri’s warning to Babar regarding time

Beyond the mental aspect, Shastri emphasized that the modern T20 game, specifically the middle-over phase where Babar now operates, simply does not allow for a ‘settling in’ period. He warned that while Babar has the class to recover, time is a luxury Pakistan cannot afford: “He’s a quality player. We know he’s got the experience to adjust very quickly, but he has to do it quickly because the middle overs are a very crucial period of play.”

Shastri pointed out that in a tournament of this magnitude, any drop in momentum during the 7-15 over block can be fatal, adding: “In T20 cricket, you can’t give it that much time unless the conditions are really in favor of the bowlers.” With critics already suggesting his spot is under threat, Shastri concluded with a stark reality check for the former captain: “There will be questions asked.” The upcoming clash against the USA in Colombo is now widely seen as a make or break moment for Babar to prove he can still match the scoring rates of the world’s elite.

NEW DELHI: The USA cricket team has been forced to make a change to its squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 after fast bowler Jasdeep Singh was ruled out with a shoulder injury. The ICC confirmed that Ehsan Adil has been approved as his replacement by the tournament’s Event Technical Committee.

In a statement confirming the change, ICC wrote, “The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has approved Ehsan Adil as a replacement for Jasdeep Singh in the USA squad.” Adil, who has previously played three Tests and six ODIs for Pakistan, has not yet represented the USA in international matches but is eligible to join the squad following the committee’s clearance. The ICC also noted that “The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee (ETC) before the player can be officially added to the squad.”Jasdeep Singh’s injury came during a warm-up match against New Zealand at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. While attempting a diving catch off Devon Conway’s shot, the 32-year-old landed awkwardly on his right shoulder and was in visible pain. He was quickly surrounded by players and support staff before being taken off the field and rushed to the hospital for scans.Jasdeep’s story has been an important part of USA cricket’s rise. Born in New York, he moved to Punjab as a child before returning to the United States and taking up cricket seriously. He made his senior USA debut in 2015 and, after battling injuries, became a regular member of the team from 2018 onward. In total, he has played 45 ODIs and 30 T20Is, picking up 54 and 31 wickets respectively. He was also part of the USA’s memorable 2024 T20 World Cup campaign, where the team stunned Pakistan, with Jasdeep dismissing Babar Azam in that historic match. His absence in 2026 will be a setback for the American side, but the addition of Ehsan Adil gives them an experienced pace option as they prepare for the global tournament.

Can’t sign foreigners after asking players to take salary cuts, it’s disrespectful: Manolo Marquez | Goa News

With four foreign players parting ways with the club in January, FC Goa coach Manolo Marquez will have just two foreign players for this season’s ISL

Panaji: Manolo Marquez has been left bemused with Indian Super League (ISL) clubs asking their players to take a salary cut this season and still making foreign additions. The experienced FC Goa coach has seen four of his six foreign players part ways with the club due to uncertainty surrounding Indian football, choosing to ply their trade outside the country. There will be no replacements, even if that makes the team weaker than at the start of season when they competed in the AFC Champions League Two, Asian football’s second tier club competition. “When you ask players to reduce salary and suddenly sign four-five (new) foreigners, I think it’s disrespectful to everyone,” Manolo told TOI after a training session at the Atal Stadium in Bambolim. “I am part of the decision (not to sign new foreign players) at the club. When you ask to reduce salaries by 10%, thank them, you can’t go ahead and make additions, spending more money. Even with (salary) deductions, it had to be equal for all players, whether Indian or foreigner. That’s what we did at Goa.” Goa looked like a strong unit at the start of the season, but the foreign exits have left them vulnerable, particularly in midfield. Without David Timor and Borja Herrera, the midfield won’t look the same, while the absence of Iker Guarrotxena and Javier Siverio could be felt upfront. Manolo, though, isn’t perturbed and will count on Serbian winger Dejan Drazic and Spanish defender Pol Moreno. “I am very happy that they are here. Dejan is a Serbian, but he’s more Indian now. He knows Goa better than most (players) and he’s always with the Indian players. Pol has his family here and he’s more settled. The group is close. We are enjoying the training sessions. Maybe we have lost some quality, but the group is disciplined. We are not playing fantastic football, but we are a difficult team to beat,” said Manolo. Except Mohammedan Sporting, who will field an all-Indian lineup due to a transfer ban, and Odisha FC who have just one foreign player on their roster, Goa will have the least foreign players. Manolo sees his team’s strengths differently. “The strength of this group is that they are all together,” said Manolo. “It was difficult (for the players to take a salary cut) but this was an exceptional situation like Covid-19 (pandemic). I feel you need to be grateful to the club that has given everything to you. It’s also true that these boys gave everything for the club. This is the reason why I say that, in my opinion, FC Goa is the club with the best organisation in the country. Goa have promoted five players from their developmental side to the seniors with Sitroy Carvalho, Malsawmtlunga, Vellington Fernandes, Jovial Dias and Lionel Rymmei keen to grab the opportunity. Up against teams with double the foreign players that they will have on the field, Goa may find the going tough. But for a side that has won the Super Cup and already qualified for next season’s AFC Champions League Two playoff – the same prize offered for ISL champions – they won’t be burdened with expectations, particularly with just 13 games to be played in the top-tier league this season. “I have a lot of hope that we will have a good season, with a lot of young guys, a lot of players who want to show their level. It’s a nice challenge for all of us. We have to take the competition game by game. The focus now is on the opening game (against Inter Kashi on Saturday). My dream is to see Fatorda cheering FC Goa in big numbers. These players deserve the support,” said Manolo. To be played on a single-leg home and away format with just 13 matches, this season’s ISL kicks off on Saturday with a clash between defending champions Mohun Bagan SG and Kerala Blasters FC. Goa take on I-League champions Inter Kashi later in the day at Fatorda.

Fans erupt as Lungi Ngidi’s four-wicket burst powers South Africa to a dominant win against Canada in T20 World Cup 2026

The Narendra Modi Stadium bore witness to a clinical exhibition of T20 cricket on February 09, 2026, as South Africa dismantled Canada by 57 runs in their Group D clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. While the Proteas’ batters set the stage with a towering total, it was a ferocious opening spell from Lungi Ngidi that truly broke the Canadian spirit, sending fans into a frenzy and solidifying South Africa’s dominance in the tournament.

Aiden Markram and South African middle-order fireworks set a massive target Canada

Opting to assert authority early, South Africa’s top order came out firing. The Powerplay was a masterclass in aggressive accumulation, as Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock raced to 65/0 within the first six overs. Markram was particularly devastating, reaching a 28-ball half-century characterized by elegant drives and brutal pulls. Despite losing De Kock for 25, the momentum never wavered.

Ryan Rickelton added a brisk 33, but the real sting came in the final overs. Although Canada’s Ansh Patel managed a brave triple-strike to remove Markram (59), Rickelton, and Dewald Brevis in quick succession, he couldn’t stem the tide of the “Killer Miller” show. David Miller (39 off 23) and Tristan Stubbs (34 off 19) combined for an unbeaten 75-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Their late-inning onslaught, aided by a slow over-rate penalty against Canada in the final over, propelled South Africa to a massive 213/4.

Lungi Ngidi’s four-wicket haul takes South Africa to an emphatic win in T20 World Cup 2026

The Canadian chase was effectively over before it began, thanks to a masterclass in seam bowling from Ngidi. Charging in under the lights, Ngidi struck with the very first ball of the innings, removing Canadian captain Dilpreet Bajwa for a golden duck. He didn’t stop there; in a frantic opening burst, Ngidi dismantled the top order, claiming Yuvraj Samra and Nicholas Kirton to leave Canada reeling at 26/3 within three overs.

While Navneet Dhaliwal played a lone hand of defiance, scoring a gritty 64 off 49 balls, he found little support at the other end. Ngidi returned to provide the finishing touch to his spell, dismissing Harsh Thaker to finish with stellar figures of 4/31.

Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada provided excellent support, ensuring Canada never gained the required run-rate momentum. This victory sends a loud message to the rest of Group D: the Proteas possess both the batting depth to post 200+ scores and a bowling spearhead in Ngidi capable of winning matches in the first six balls.
