12-year-old boy bitten by stray dies after 20 days in Maharashtra, kin blame hospital negligence | Mumbai News

BHIWANDI: A 12-year-old boy from Bhiwandi died last Friday, three weeks after being mauled by a stray dog while playing outside his house on Jan 10. His relatives blamed inadequate treatment facilities at the govt-run Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital in Bhiwandi and for making them shuttle between hospitals, but the facility’s authorities said all necessary care was provided on time. The hospital said he had received three anti-rabies vaccine doses and was scheduled to get the final one on Jan 28 but his condition worsened the day prior. Health officials said an autopsy report on the cause of death was awaited. IGM Hospital’s superintendent Dr Madhavi Pandhare said the death could have been due to rabies spreading to the brain or because of low immunity.

The child, Hamid Khan, had sustained deep wounds to the face and near the ribs in the dog attack and was rushed to IGM Hospital. Doctors administered the first anti-rabies shot and considering the severity of his injuries, referred him to Thane Civil Hospital for a surgeon’s opinion. At the Thane hospital, doctors advised the family to admit Hamid. The family said they couldn’t afford to travel 16km daily from their Bhiwandi home and brought him back to IGM Hospital. He was given anti-rabies jabs there on Jan 13 and Jan 17.But on Jan 27, Hamid’s condition worsened and he developed respiratory issues. Doctors at IGM Hospital again referred him to Thane Civil Hospital, citing the need for advanced care. From Thane, he was shifted to govt-run Kasturba Hospital in Chinchpokli after doctors said he required ICU treatment. Hamid died during treatment at Kasturba Hospital. Accusing IGM Hospital of negligence, the family alleged it had effectively become only “a referral centre”. Dr Pandhare said all necessary treatment, including tetanus toxoid injections, anti-rabies vaccine, anti-rabies serum and antibiotics, was given, and the child was referred to the Thane hospital only for surgical opinion. She said when he returned with breathing issues on Jan 27, he was critical and required isolation, prompting the referral to the Thane hospital.Bhiwandi MLA Rais Shaikh said he would raise the issue of alleged inadequate treatment facilities for dog bites in the constituency during the next assembly session and sought a case against negligent hospital staffers.

MP Rashid’s party seeks citizenship for ex-militants’ kin from PoK | India News

MP Rashid’s party seeks citizenship for ex-militants’ kin from PoK

JAMMU: Jailed Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid’s Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) said Sunday it had submitted an assembly resolution seeking citizenship and legal status for former militants’ wives and children who came from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under a 2010 rehabilitation policy. The J&K assembly’s budget session begins on Monday.Langate Shiekh Khursheed, AIP MLA and Rashid’s brother, said those who came under the rehabilitation policy continue to remain without citizenship or legal recognition, leading to denial of their basic rights including education, healthcare, employment opportunities and identity documents. The UPA govt at the Centre had announced the rehabilitation policy in 2010 during Omar Abdullah’s earlier stint as chief minister of the erstwhile J&K state. Omar had then described the rehabilitation of such militants as a “humanitarian issue with nothing sinister or dangerous”.Officials had, however, cited stringent criteria and said only 350 of over 1,200 applications were accepted. Citizenship for such families has been a long-pending demand, with PDP having backed it earlier.Addressing a news conference on Sunday, Khursheed explained the AIP’s resolution. “The resolution urges both the J&K govt and the Centre to grant citizenship or appropriate legal status, issue valid domicile and identity documents, and ensure dignity, security and constitutional safeguards for these individuals,” said Khursheed, the lone MLA of his party.Dwelling on other issues, Khursheed pushed for steps to ensure Mehraj Malik, Doda’s arrested AAP MLA, is allowed to attend the assembly session. Khursheed said he had personally handed over a letter to chief minister Omar last week requesting him to convene an all-party meeting and pass a resolution urging LG Manoj Sinha to ensure Malik’s presence in the House. Malik, AAP’s only MLA in J&K, was held last year under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) for allegedly misbehaving with senior officials during a protest.Khursheed said he had submitted another assembly resolution seeking transfer of all power projects in the Union Territory to the J&K govt. “This will help ensure cheaper electricity, strengthen power infrastructure and enhance revenue.”Khursheed lamented that he had submitted several resolutions in the 2025 budget session but none was taken up. These pertained to release of political prisoners, restoration of Article 370 and J&K’s statehood. “I am hopeful my party’s resolutions will be taken up this time,” Khursheed said.

Hunt for ultras intensified on Day 15 of Op Trashi-I | India News

Hunt for ultras intensified on Day 15 of Op Trashi-I

JAMMU: The ongoing hunt for three fugitive ultras in the snowbound Chatroo-Dolgam-Dichhar belt was intensified on Sunday — day 15 of Operation Trashi-I.Security forces and terrorists had briefly exchanged bullets in Dolgam area Saturday. One terrorist was believed to have sustained injuries, as drone footage purportedly showed blood trails, officials said. Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Pratik Sharma had visited Kishtwar on Saturday to review the counter-terrorism grid. The latest gunfight was the fourth encounter since initial contact was established in Sonnar forest near Mandral-Singhpora, Chatroo, on Jan 18, in which eight security personnel were injured, one of whom eventually succumbed. On Jan 22, another gunfight broke out with holed-up ultras in Singhpora. Yet another firefight followed on Jan 24, in which a Pakistani Jaish terrorist was shot dead. After an overnight cordon, the searches resumed early Sunday and continued till late in the night.Officials said the ultras, on the run for more than two weeks now, had been continuously changing hideouts. Additional forces were roped in to fortify the cordon, and sniffer dogs were deployed to assist the troops on the ground. The region was put under aerial surveillance using drones and choppers to plug possible escape routes.Security agencies were also trying to trace terrorist sympathisers who may have helped the ultras with food and shelter. After leaving a fortified hideout on Jan 19, the terrorists might have run out of rations and consumables, especially in view of the hostile weather conditions.Mobile internet services (all bandwidths) have remained temporarily suspended within a 6km-radius covering Singhpora, Chingam, and Chatroo since Jan 30 as a security measure.

NEW DELHI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has responded to Pakistan’s decision to boycott its February 15 match against India at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, calling the move a serious concern for the global game.In an official statement, the ICC acknowledged the announcement made by Pakistan’s government but made it clear that selective participation does not fit with the core idea of an international tournament.

T20 World Cup: Squads, Full Schedule, Venues and Key Details Explained

“The ICC notes the statement that the government of Pakistan has made regarding the decision to instruct its national team to selectively participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026,” the statement said. The ICC added that it is still waiting for formal communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). However, it stressed that skipping a scheduled match goes against the basic principles of a world event. “This position of selective participation is difficult to reconcile with the fundamental premise of a global sporting event where all qualified teams are expected to compete on equal terms per the event schedule,” the ICC added. The governing body underlined that ICC tournaments are based on fairness and integrity. “ICC tournaments are built on sporting integrity, competitiveness, consistency and fairness, and selective participation undermines the spirit and sanctity of the competitions,” it stated. While respecting the role of governments, the ICC said the decision hurts the sport and fans. “While the ICC respects the roles of governments in matters of national policy, this decision is not in the interest of the global game or the welfare of fans worldwide, including millions in Pakistan,” the statement added. The ICC also warned about long-term consequences. “The ICC hopes that the PCB will consider the significant and long-term implications for cricket in its own country,” it said, pointing out that such actions affect the entire cricket ecosystem. The council stressed its main goal. “The ICC’s priority remains the successful delivery of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” and it expects all members, including the PCB, to help find “a mutually acceptable resolution.”Earlier, Pakistan’s government confirmed it would allow the team to travel to Sri Lanka but instructed it not to play India.

It will all help in trade diversification also,” Agrawal told PTI.The secretary said sector-specific announcements covering electronics, IT, pharma, marine products, leather, textiles and semiconductors will further strengthen export competitiveness. In a sector-focused move, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed duty-free imports of certain specified inputs to support leather exports. The measure is aimed at providing relief to leather exporters facing steep US tariffs of around 50 per cent.India’s leather and leather products exports dipped marginally by 0.23 per cent to $3.3 billion during April–December 2025-26, according to official data. The commerce ministry said the planned revival of 200 legacy industrial clusters through infrastructure and technology upgradation is expected to reduce production costs, improve productivity and enhance the competitiveness of traditional export hubs.It added that reforms in Special Economic Zones are designed to improve capacity utilisation, enhance economies of scale and strengthen overall resilience of the SEZ ecosystem while maintaining export orientation.“One-time facilitation for limited Domestic Tariff Area sales at concessional duties and extended tax incentives for cloud and data-centre operations are expected to attract global manufacturers and technology players to SEZs,” the ministry said. The ministry also said removal of the Rs 10 lakh value cap on courier exports will support small exporters and boost e-commerce-driven shipments, while improved processes for handling returned consignments will reduce friction in global business-to-consumer trade.Further, extensions of concessional customs duty regimes for gold and silver dore bars and lab-grown diamond inputs are expected to support domestic refining and value addition. The government has also proposed targeted tax and regulatory reforms for IT and IT-enabled services, including unified classification of IT services, higher safe-harbour thresholds, automated approvals, faster Advance Pricing Agreements and long-term policy certainty, which are expected to enhance India’s attractiveness for Global Capability Centres and international service providers.
