Sunil Gavaskar excludes India from his list of T20 World Cup 2026 trophy favourites

As the T20 World Cup 2026 hurtles toward the knockout stages, the cricketing world has been left buzzing by a bold declaration from one of India‘s most revered icons. Despite the ‘Men in Blue’ showing immense resilience and firepower throughout the tournament, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has looked beyond his home nation when identifying the ultimate favourites for the trophy.

In a candid assessment with India Today, the 76-year-old maestro pointed toward two other powerhouses that he believes possess a more ‘complete’ tactical edge. His reasoning doesn’t stem from a lack of faith in India, but rather an admiration for the sheer versatility and depth displayed by two sides that have already punched their tickets to the semi-finals. For Gavaskar, the ability to adapt to varying subcontinental conditions is the true benchmark of a champion.

Sunil Gavaskar sidesteps India in his T20 World Cup 2026 favourites prediction

Sunil Gavaskar has officially tipped England and South Africa as the frontrunners to lift the T20 World Cup, citing their balanced rosters as the primary reason for his choice. During a recent discussion on India Today, the former captain broke down why Harry Brook‘s side and the clinical Proteas have the edge over the rest of the field, including a formidable Indian lineup. Gavaskar was particularly impressed by England’s ability to navigate high-pressure situations, even dismissing their recent batting stutter against Pakistan as a minor hiccup caused by modern aggression.

“For me, the two favorites are South Africa and England. England might have had a close victory, but that again is down to the modern tendency to try and finish the game off with a six. England, because they’ve got the bowlers who can bowl spin as well as quick. They’ve got a very good bowling attack and the batting also, they’ve got a fair bit of depth over there. So I think England and South Africa are the two teams to watch out for.” Gavaskar said.

The path of dominance for both teams in T20 World Cup 2026

The statistics certainly back Gavaskar’s bold claims, as both sides have enjoyed a near-flawless run through the tournament’s most difficult phases. South Africa, in particular, has been a force of nature, entering the Super Eights after a perfect group stage and securing massive wins over both India (by 76 runs) and the West Indies (by 9 wickets). Their ability to handle the pressure of two Super Overs against Afghanistan earlier in the tournament proved their mental fortitude. Meanwhile, England have shown remarkable depth, recovering from an early group-stage loss to the West Indies to dominate the Super Eights with wins over Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Preliminary report into Baramati crash out: low visibility, operational gaps cited

MUMBAI: The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Saturday released its preliminary report into the fatal Learjet 45XR crash at Baramati on January 28, highlighting low visibility, lack of basic meteorological facilities and operational gaps at the uncontrolled airfield. All five persons on board were killed, among them was the then Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar. The aircraft, VT-SSK, operated by VSR Ventures Pvt. Ltd., was on a non-scheduled passenger flight from Mumbai to Baramati. The accident occurred at about 0846 IST during landing. The jet carried two pilots, one cabin attendant and two passengers. The report states that Baramati airfield does not have a MET facility. Weather parameters such as wind, temperature and QNH are passed from a temporary tower using available instruments, while visibility is assessed through visual markers identified by flying training organisations. On the morning of the accident, the tower assessed visibility at about 3,000 metres, below the 5 km minimum required for VFR operations. METAR data from Pune showed visibility between 2,000 and 2,500 metres during the relevant window. The first approach to runway 11 resulted in a go-around. During the second approach, the crew reported the field in sight and was cleared to land. The aircraft later transmitted “Oh st… Oh st…” before crash-landing to the left of runway 11 abeam the threshold. It struck trees and terrain about 50 metres from the runway edge and was engulfed in fire. The cockpit and cabin were destroyed. The solid-state flight data recorder has been downloaded. The cockpit voice recorder, which sustained thermal damage, will be analysed with assistance from the US National Transportation Safety Board and the manufacturer. In its interim safety recommendations, the AAIB said:“It is recommended that DGCA may issue necessary directions to all operators operating VFR flights to uncontrolled airfields to strictly adhere to the laid down standard operating procedures. Further, necessary directions may also be issued to all the aerodrome operators/organisations responsible for handling the aerodrome services at the uncontrolled airfields to ensure that the flying operations (including Non-scheduled/Private/Charter operations) in the airfield is allowed only when the prevailing MET conditions are within the criteria laid down in the relevant DGCA regulations.“It is recommended that DGCA may issue specific directions to all the stakeholders responsible to manage and maintain the uncontrolled airfields to ensure that required safety standards are maintained at the airport for safe aircraft operations. Compliance of the same may be checked during audit/surveillance.”“It is recommended that DGCA may take necessary measures to enhance the landing aids along with basic MET facility at these airports to cater for large number of Non-scheduled/chartered flights (including VIP flights) being carried out at these airports apart from flying training activities.”“It is recommended that DGCA may check the feasibility of licensing these aerodromes for conduct of safe and regulated flying operations.”The investigation is in progress.

The Boston Bruins came back from the Olympic break with a new sense of urgency because the NHL trade deadline is coming up soon. Boston got a boost from their 4-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, but it also showed areas of the roster that could change in the next few days.As rumors grow about possible new players, veteran defenseman Hampus Lindholm continues to be the anchor of the blue line. General manager Don Sweeney has to make some very important decisions that could change the course of Boston’s postseason and the latest NHL news roundup.

Boston Bruins NHL trade rumors heat up

Trade chatter surrounding the Boston Bruins has intensified as the deadline nears, making this a focal point in NHL trade rumors across the league. Boston previously explored defensive upgrades, and league insiders suggest the front office remains active in discussions involving both a top-four defenseman and a middle-six forward.Names linked in league circles include players from the St. Louis Blues, with forwards such as Robert Thomas and Brayden Schenn reportedly drawing interest. While no deal appears imminent, executives around the league expect movement as teams finalize strategies before the cutoff.Lindholm’s steady presence on the ice has been very important. He has often played with young defenseman Mason Lohrei, giving him advice while playing a lot of minutes. Lindholm’s ability to move the puck and play defense has helped a unit that has been inconsistent at times this season. The results of Boston’s recent NHL games show that the team can compete but is still looking for consistency. The win over Columbus showed that the team was better organized and scored at the right times. However, management will probably become more aggressive in the future. There are also decisions being made about depth in goal. Michael DiPietro, the goaltender, was called into action for a short time before going back to the Providence Bruins. Jeremy Swayman, the starter, is expected to take on a bigger role. Over the next week, it will be important to keep an eye on NHL injury updates and roster changes. The Boston Bruins are at a very important point right now, with momentum building and rumors flying.

AI shock hits IT stocks: Nifty IT posts worst monthly fall in 17 years as sector loses Rs 5.7 lakh crore

The Nifty IT index plunged 19.5% in February, marking its steepest monthly decline in 17 years, as mounting fears of artificial intelligence-led disruption triggered heavy selling across technology services stocks. The fall is the sharpest since September 2008, when the index had dropped nearly 21% during the global financial crisis. The index declined in 12 of the 21 trading sessions during the month, wiping out nearly Rs 5.7 lakh crore in market capitalisation, according to data from the ET Intelligence Group.Selling pressure intensified after US-based artificial intelligence firm Anthropic unveiled new tools — Claude Cowork and Claude Code — sparking concerns about the long-term demand outlook for traditional IT outsourcing services and triggering a broader sell-off in technology stocks across US and Indian markets.

-

Despite the steep monthly decline, the Nifty IT index edged up 0.16% on Friday to close at 30,603.85, even as the benchmark Nifty fell 318 points, or 1.25%, to 25,178.65. The broader Nifty index declined 0.6% for the month.Among individual stocks, Coforge emerged as the worst performer, while LTIMindtree, Tech Mahindra, Persistent Systems and Infosys also underperformed the index, falling between 21% and 28% during February.Oracle Financial Services Software declined the least at 10.7%, followed by Wipro.
