Highway funding push: NHAI gets Sebi nod for Raajmarg Infra InvIT; retail investors set to tap highway monetisation

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has received regulatory approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) to register Raajmarg Infra Investment Trust (RIIT) as a Public Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT), paving the way for wider public participation in national highway assets. In a statement issued on Wednesday, NHAI said the Public InvIT is designed to unlock the monetisation potential of operational national highway projects while offering a long-term investment avenue, primarily targeted at retail and domestic investors. The move is seen as a key step in expanding public involvement in India’s highway infrastructure growth, while also helping NHAI recycle capital for future road development. As part of the structure, NHAI has earlier incorporated Raajmarg Infra Investment Managers Pvt Ltd (RIIMPL) to act as the investment manager for the trust. RIIMPL has been set up as a joint venture with equity participation from a consortium of leading banks and financial institutions, including State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, NaBFID, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finserv Ventures Ltd, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, IndusInd Bank and Yes Bank. NRVVMK Rajendra Kumar, Member (Finance) at NHAI, will serve as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (additional charge) of the investment manager company, according to the statement. NHAI said the Raajmarg Infra InvIT will deepen domestic investor participation and play a pivotal role in supporting the expansion of a robust national highway network, while allowing retail investors to directly participate in India’s infrastructure development story.

'Lack of evidence, faulty probe': Delhi court acquits trio in 2009 acid attack case; victim to challenge verdict

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Wednesday acquitted three accused in a 2009 acid attack case, citing a lack of evidence, 16 years after charges of criminal conspiracy were framed against them.Additional Sessions Judge Jagmohan Singh acquitted the trio — Yashvinder, his wife Bala, and Mandeep Mann — who were accused of conspiring with another accused, a juvenile at the time, to carry out the attack on an MBA student in Panipat, Haryana.Reacting to the acquittal, the victim’s lawyer said the decision would be challenged in a higher court.“Apart from insufficient evidence, the court cited a faulty and incomplete investigation and the absence of the victim’s evidence on record, though an inquiry has been ordered against the investigating officer,” advocate Madiah Shahjar told reporters.“While the court expressed sympathy, it said that justice — not sympathy — was sought after a 16-year legal battle. The verdict will be challenged in the Delhi high court and, if required, in the Supreme Court,” the lawyer added.A detailed order in the matter would be issued on December 26. On December 4, while hearing a PIL filed by the victim, the Supreme Court termed delayed trials in acid attack cases a “mockery of the system” and directed all high courts to submit details of such pending cases within four weeks. The top court also described the prolonged delay in the case as a “national shame” and ordered that the trial be conducted on a day-to-day basis. In 2013, the case was shifted from Haryana to Delhi’s Rohini court.(With PTI inputs)

Top 5 youngest centurions in List A cricket ft. Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the 14-year-old Bihar batting prodigy, shattered records in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 opener by becoming the youngest player ever to score a century in men’s List A cricket. At 14 years and 272 days old, he blazed 190 runs off 84 balls, including 16 fours and 15 sixes, against Arunachal Pradesh at JSCA Oval in Ranchi. Suryavanshi reached his hundred in just 36 balls, the second-fastest in Indian List A cricket behind Anmolpreet Singh‘s 35-ball effort, while also claiming the fastest 150 in men’s List A history off 59 balls. July brought another milestone: a 52-ball youth ODI hundred off 78 balls (143 runs) for India against England at Worcester, the fastest recorded in that format. Four months later, his 32-ball 144 in India A‘s Asia Cup Rising Stars T20 win over UAE ranked as the joint-fifth quickest men’s T20 ton worldwide.

Nuclear power plant on Moon? Russia wants to build one by 2036; US in 'race' to get there earlier

Russia aims to build a nuclear power plant on the moon by 2036 to power its lunar program and a joint Russian-Chinese research station. Major powers are competing to explore the moon, with both Russia and the United States racing to establish lunar bases for future space missions. The Russian space agency, Roscosmos, has signed a deal with aerospace company Lavochkin Association to build the lunar power plant. While not explicitly stated as nuclear, the project involves Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom and the Kurchatov Institute, the country’s leading nuclear research facility.“The project is an important step towards the creation of a permanently functioning scientific lunar station and the transition from one-time missions to a long-term lunar exploration programme,” Roscosmos explained in a statement, as quoted by Reuters.Russia’s space ambitions have faced setbacks recently. Their Luna-25 mission crashed on the moon in August 2023, and they’ve fallen behind the US and China in space exploration. This is quite a change for a country that made history when Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space in 1961.US also in the raceThe US is also in the lunar nuclear race. Nasa wants to put its own reactor on the moon by early 2030. US Transport Secretary Sean Duffy said in August, “We’re in a race to the moon, in a race with China to the moon. And to have a base on the moon, we need energy.”There’s more at stake than just national pride. The moon holds valuable resources. Nasa estimated there’s a million tonnes of Helium-3, a rare earth isotope. Boeing research shows the moon also contains precious rare earth metals used in smartphones and computers. While space laws ban nuclear weapons in space, they allow nuclear power sources if they follow safety rules.

CEA seeks stakeholder suggestions to address research gap in power sector | India News

CEA seeks stakeholder suggestions to address research gap in power sector

NEW DELHI: Observing a clear mismatch between research needs in the power sector and the efforts being made to address them, the central electricity authority (CEA) has sought suggestions from stakeholders to bridge the gap.The move comes as part of the exercise to prepare the National Electricity Plan (NEP) for the period 2027-28 to 2036-37. In a communication to the stakeholders, the CEA stated that the plan was being prepared in line with the national electricity policy, which is notified once every five years.According to officials, the CEA recently set up a panel to prepare the NEP for the next 10 years, which further constituted 11 sub-committees to examine different segments of the power sector and provide inputs. The sub-committee formed to focus on research and development noted a clear disconnect between the research requirements of the power industry and the academic research currently being undertaken by institutions. In a meeting held recently, the sub-committee, chaired by the Director General of the Central Power Research Institute and having members from academia, industry, and other institutions, underlined the need for adequate funding for breakthrough and transformative technologies. It stressed that manufacturing deliverables should be integrated with research and development activities to build end-to-end capabilities in the sector.“The objective is to strengthen collaboration between industry and research institutions, encourage greater engagement of academia with industry stakeholders, and secure industry participation in terms of resources,” the CEA said, adding that constructive proposals would be discussed at the next meeting of the sub-committee.
