Dombivli witnesses rise in swanky hosps, but has few affordable beds | Mumbai News

Kalyan: Work on Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s 150-bed cancer hospital will soon commence in Dombivli, even as a 500-bed corporate hospital will open on Saturday. The Kalyan-Dombivli belt is clearly witnessing a post-Covid boom in healthcare, with a 50% increase in hospital beds since 2020.From 4,720 beds before Covid, the bed strength jumped to 7,138 in Jan, said a civic public health official. Roughly 1,000 are intensive care beds. However, as social activists pointed out, most of these beds for the 1.8 million population are in the private sector.

In 2020, KDMC’s two key hospitals — Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli and Rukminibai Hospital in Kalyan — had 220 beds. Even after the launch of a maternity hospital at Vasant Valley, the beds in KDMC-run facilities increased only to 330. In other words, barely 5% of the beds are in the affordable public sector.Umesh Borgaonkar, group leader, Shiv Sena (UBT) in KDMC, criticised the civic body’s healthcare services. “KDMC may be implementing Smart City projects, but its healthcare system is in poor state. The civic hospitals don’t have ICU beds. Apart from basic fever treatment, dressings and maternity services, serious treatment facilities are lacking,” he said.Critical patients are routinely referred to Mumbai or Thane govt hospitals, he added. In fact, the flow of patients from KDMC prompted Thane’s Jupiter Hospital group to set up a 500-bed multispecialty hospital in Dombivli. Residents of KDMC, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath and Badlapur lived with inadequate healthcare for long. “In large Indian cities, no one should have to travel more than 45 minutes to get access to high-quality healthcare,” said Dr Ajay Thakker of Jupiter Hospital. Vinod Mishra, a resident of Kalyan East, said many multi-speciality hospitals in the KDMC region exist “only in name”. “Except for 2 or 3 hospitals, it was difficult to find facilities offering comprehensive treatment under one roof,” he said. The presence of hospital chains could bring pricing discipline among private healthcare providers here who charge high bills without offering facilities, he added. KDMC health officer Dr Deepa Shukla said the civic body operates three hospitals and two outsourced hospitals. In addition, KDMC runs 26 primary health centres, 50 wellness centres and 59 Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Clinics. Efforts are underway to strengthen critical care services, said Dr Shukla. She said KDMC also plans to construct a 100-bed multi-speciality hospital at Gauripada in Kalyan. “But the project was delayed due to the absence of a consultant,” she added.Additional reporting by Malathy Iyer

Melody stretch on Coastal Rd out of tune with locals | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Barely two days after the city’s first melody road was inaugurated, residents from Breach Candy wrote to the Municipal Commissioner, raising strong objections to the music being played along the northbound stretch of the city’s Coastal Road which cuts through residential neighbourhoods.Residents said they were increasingly fatigued from repeatedly raising serious civic concerns, only to find that attention appeared focused on avoidable and non-essential interventions such as amplified music on a high-speed corridor. In a letter, also marked to the Chief Minister’s Office, Maharashtra, members of the Breach Candy ALM and the Breach Candy Residents Forum (BCRF), representing over 650 families, said the initiative caused “significant distress” and served no essential public necessity. The residents said loud music was played daily from 6am to midnight along the Mumbai Coastal Road, disrupting daily life and forcing people to keep windows shut. Pointing out that Mumbai already struggles with excessive honking and traffic noise, the residents argued that amplified music contradicts ongoing efforts to reduce noise pollution and promote quieter, more liveable urban spaces.Anahita Havaldar, a resident, said, “Many prefer quiet surroundings or have their own music choices. We respectfully request that this be discontinued, and that the resources instead be directed towards essential civic improvements such as roads, pavements, and cleanliness.”Kavita Chawla, whose flat directly faces the coastal road, said the music, along with the speeding cars, echoed in their buildings all day, making it impossible to sleep. “We’re already struggling with traffic congestion and honking due to the Coastal Road exit being right near our building and numerous vehicles daily coming in and out of this locality. We request peace and quiet.”On Feb 11, the initiative was inaugurated by CM Devendra Fadnavis and DCM Eknath Shinde. Special grooves were laid over a 500-metre stretch on the first lane next to the divider. When vehicles travel over these grooves at a speed of 70–80 kmph, the tune of ‘Jai Ho’ from the film Slumdog Millionaire can be heard inside the vehicle.

‘If he pauses…’: R Ashwin’s fascinating advice to India before Usman Tariq test vs Pakistan | Cricket News

Ravichandran Ashwin and Usman Tariq

NEW DELHI: Spin great Ravichandran Ashwin has offered a fascinating tactical blueprint for India’s batters ahead of the high-voltage T20 World Cup clash against Pakistan, suggesting they use the rules smartly while facing the unconventional action of mystery spinner Usman Tariq. With Tariq’s stop-and-pause delivery already sparking debates across the cricketing world, Ashwin believes awareness and game intelligence could be the key to countering the off-spinner’s growing influence.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!Speaking on his YouTube show, Ashwin said batters have every right to step away from the crease if they feel unsure during Tariq’s delivery stride. “If he stops before delivering the ball, the batsman has the right to move away. He can say that ‘I thought he is stopping’. That will be an interesting case and a huge headache for the umpire,” Ashwin explained, highlighting how mental pressure could shift back onto the bowler.

T20 World Cup | Ishan Kishan press conference: On fifty vs Namibia, India’s batting collapses

The veteran spinner even admitted that he would personally use that tactic if he were in the middle. “If I was there I would have done it. One should do everything to win a game within rules. I would simply say I don’t know when he will release the ball and step away. If I move away, it is the umpire’s responsibility,” he added, suggesting such reactions could unsettle Tariq — a bowler he described as Pakistan’s potential “ace up their sleeves.Tariq’s unusual side-arm action has divided opinions, with debates ranging from legality to effectiveness. While some critics have questioned whether the bowler exceeds the ICC’s 15-degree elbow flex limit, Ashwin urged caution before jumping to conclusions. According to him, judging elbow extension in real time is nearly impossible for on-field umpires, and the sport needs better technological support.

Poll

Do you think Ravichandran Ashwin’s strategy of stepping away from the crease could effectively unsettle Usman Tariq?

“There is a 15-degree rule, but to judge it live is impossible. The only solution is having a real-time in-competition testing tool,” Ashwin said, calling the issue a grey area and warning against unfair accusations. With Colombo’s slow conditions likely to assist spin, Ashwin’s strategic insight adds another intriguing layer to what promises to be a gripping India-Pakistan showdown.

Fans erupt as Saiteja Mukkamalla, Harmeet Singh lead USA to emphatic win over Netherlands in T20 World Cup 2026

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 witnessed a one-sided contest at the MA Chidambaram Stadium as the United States of America (USA) hammered Netherlands by 93 runs in the 21st Match of Group A. After posting an imposing 196/6 in 20 overs, the USA bowlers dismantled the Dutch batting line-up for just 103 in 15.5 overs, registering one of their most comprehensive victories in the tournament.

Saiteja Mukkamalla, Shubham Ranjane lead USA to a massive total

Put in to bat after Netherlands elected to bowl, USA began positively through Monank Patel and Shayan Jahangir. Monank struck a brisk 36 off 22 deliveries, lacing his innings with three fours and a six, while Jahangir added 20 off 14 balls with two maximums to keep the momentum intact during the powerplay.

The innings, however, was anchored brilliantly by Saiteja Mukkamalla. The stylish batter produced a commanding knock of 79 off 51 balls, smashing five boundaries and four sixes. He paced his innings smartly, rotating strike in the middle overs before accelerating at the death. Shubham Ranjane provided the late flourish with a powerful 48 off just 24 deliveries, including three fours and two sixes, pushing USA close to the 200-run mark.

For Netherlands, Bas de Leede was the standout bowler, picking up 3 wickets for 37 runs in his four overs. Logan van Beek and Kyle Klein chipped in with one wicket each, but the Dutch attack struggled to contain the flow of runs on a batting-friendly surface.

Harmeet Singh leads ruthless bowling effort

Chasing 197, Netherlands never found stability. Michael Levitt fell early for 3, and although Max O’Dowd and De Leede attempted to rebuild, regular wickets derailed their pursuit. De Leede top-scored with 23 off 17 balls, while captain Scott Edwards managed 20, but the required rate kept climbing steeply.

The turning point came in the middle overs when Harmeet Singh spun a web around the Dutch batters. The left-arm spinner delivered a match-winning spell of 4 for 21 in his four overs, breaking the backbone of the chase. He was well supported by Shadley van Schalkwyk, who claimed 3 wickets for 21 runs in 2.5 overs, while Nosthush Kenjige and Ali Khan picked up a wicket apiece. Netherlands were eventually bundled out for 103 in 15.5 overs, falling well short of the target.

‘Deception and farce’: Sheikh Hasina rejects Bangladesh poll results, calls it ‘disgraceful chapter’

'Deception and farce': Sheikh Hasina rejects Bangladesh poll results, calls it 'disgraceful chapter'
Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina (AP photo)

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina late Friday reacted sharply to the recently held general elections in the South Asian nation, dismissing the February 12 polls as a “pre-planned election of deception and farce” and calling it a “disgraceful chapter” in the country’s history. Her remarks come as her party, the Awami League, remained entirely absent from the electoral contest, while Hasina continues to live in exile in New Delhi following her ouster in August 2024 over security concerns. In a statement, Hasina said, “On 12 February, the nation witnessed a pre-planned election of deception and farce, one that will be recorded as a disgraceful chapter in Bangladesh’s democratic history.”She further questioned the legitimacy of the polls, saying they did not reflect the “public will” and alleging that the exercise amounted to an industrial-scale administrative effort to manipulate numbers.Providing detailed figures to support her claim, Hasina said, “The total number of registered voters in this election was 127,711,793. Voting began at 7:30 a.m. and continued until 4:30 p.m. Serious irregularities were observed, both in the conduct of voting and in the turnout percentages released in stages by the Election Commission, many of which appeared inconsistent and unrealistic. According to the Commission’s first briefing, by 11:00 a.m.—the first 3 hours and 30 minutes—14.96% of votes had been cast, equivalent to 19,105,684 ballots. That would mean an average of 90,979 votes per minute…”Meanwhile, Hasina’s arch-rival and former PM, as well as BNP supremo Khaleda Zia, had died weeks before the elections. The BNP, now led by her son Tarique Rahman, secured a commanding majority, winning two-thirds of the total seats. The BNP’s return to power has renewed calls from Dhaka for Hasina’s extradition from India, presenting a complex diplomatic challenge for New Delhi.Following the BNP’s sweeping victory in the country’s first general election since the 2024 uprising, senior party leader Salahuddin Ahmed said the incoming government would take steps to secure Hasina’s return to Bangladesh to face trial.
