After seven years’ trial, nine charged under MCOCA for dacoity let off in Maharashtra | Mumbai News

Thane: A special MCOCA court in Thane acquitted nine accused in a 2017 attempted armed dacoity case, observing that the prosecution failed to conclusively link them to the crime despite nearly eight years of trial.Special judge VG Mohite held that while the incident of attempted dacoity was established, the prosecution failed to prove the identity of the assailants beyond reasonable doubt.

Mumbai: Violent Clash, Transport Fines, City Development & More

The case dates back to July 22, 2017, when employees of a wine shop in Bhiwandi transported around Rs 7 lakh in cash in a Bolero jeep to their employer’s residence in Ulhasnagar. Near village Waret on the Ambadi-Bhiwandi road, 2 motorcycles intercepted the vehicle, and pillion riders allegedly opened fire while demanding the cash bag. Three occupants sustained bullet injuries, but the driver accelerated and managed to escape. The attackers chased the vehicle briefly before fleeing. The cash was not looted. Police subsequently arrested nine persons and invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), alleging they operated as an organised crime syndicate led by Vijay Menbansi. During trial, the court found significant inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case. Key eyewitnesses gave contradictory statements and failed to reliably identify the accused in court. The test identification parade records were not produced, and the executive magistrate who conducted it was not examined. Two injured witnesses were also not examined, with no explanation offered. The court further observed that cash allegedly seized from two accused was irrelevant since no money was actually robbed. Firearms recovery evidence weakened after one accused absconded, and the prosecution failed to produce a ballistic report linking the weapons to the incident. With the charges of attempt to murder, dacoity, and conspiracy not proved, the MCOCA charges also collapsed. The court ruled that prior criminal records alone were insufficient to secure conviction. A tenth accused remains absconding, and proceedings against him will continue upon arrest.

NEW DELHI: Rain completely washed out the Pakistan vs New Zealand T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 match in Colombo on Saturday, leaving fans disappointed and the points table wide open. The abandoned match means both teams share one point, which has made the semi-final race more complicated. This match was important for both teams to get a strong start in the Super 8 stage. Instead, Pakistan and New Zealand now have two matches left to secure a place in the semi-finals.

For Pakistan, the path is clear but challenging. They will face England and Sri Lanka next. If Pakistan win both matches, they will reach five points, which should be enough to qualify for the semi-finals. However, if they lose even one game, their qualification chances will depend on other results. If Pakistan win one match and lose one, they will finish with three points and will need other teams to drop points. If they lose both matches, Pakistan will be knocked out of the tournament.New Zealand are in a similar situation. The washout gives them one point, but they will also need victories in their remaining matches to stay in control. Any slip-up could drag them into a tight points race.Since this was the first Super 8 match for both teams, the group standings will become clearer once all teams have played at least one game. Both Pakistan and New Zealand were considered favourites, but the rain has made their road to the semi-finals more difficult.

To lower China dependence, India signs rare earths deal with Brazil | India News

To lower China dependence, India signs rare earths deal with Brazil

NEW DELHI: An agreement for cooperation on rare earths and critical minerals, bilateral trade target of $30 billion by 2030 and Global South solidarity in technology that, according to PM Narendra Modi, must be inclusive and act as a bridge for shared progress were among the highlights of Modi’s bilateral meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Saturday.Modi said the critical minerals agreement, which could potentially lower dependence on China, was a major step towards building resilient supply chains. Significantly, the leaders discussed the US Supreme Court judgment striking down President Donald Trump’s global tariffs and agreed that both sides needed to study its implications.“So, we will essentially be in wait-and-watch mode to see how the administration responds to this judgment, whether any further steps are taken and to study the implications for our trade,” said MEA secretary (east) P Kumaran at a media briefing.Lula mentioned trade unilateralism in his remarks and also said that in a turbulent world, both sides were required to strengthen and deepen their strategic dialogue. “India and Brazil are crucial voices at the UN, at the WTO and G20,” he said, while also underlining the significance of cooperation under BRICS.Modi and Lula focused on energy transition and defence and security cooperation that the PM said was a perfect example of mutual trust and strategic harmony. “We will continue to strengthen this win-win partnership further,” the PM said. In all, India and Brazil signed nine agreements, including one in the field of mining for steel supply chain, and also announced that Brazil would extend business visas for ordinary Indian passport holders to 10 years.Modi said that the expansion of India’s trade agreement with Mercosur, a South American trading bloc, will further strengthen economic cooperation and that bilateral cooperation in the field of te-chnology and innovation was important for both countries as well as the Global South.“We are also prioritising our cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, supercomputers, semiconductors and blockchain,” he said, adding that energy cooperation too had been a strong pillar of the relationship and there was now increasing cooperation in renewable energy, ethanol blending and sustainable aviation fuel.“As democratic countries, we will continue to advance the priorities and aspirations of the Global South. When India and Brazil work together, the voice of the Global South becomes stronger and more confident,” said the PM.Lula said that the meeting was one between a digital superpower and a renewable energy superpower.Brazil joined India in strongly condemning cross-border terrorism, along with the Pahalgam terrorist attack and the Red Fort blast. According to a joint statement, the leaders reaffirmed defence as an integral pillar of the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership and underscored the potential for co-design and co-production by linking India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat with Brazil’s defence industrial base.As expected, there was a strong focus on UN reforms, particularly in the Security Council, including its expansion in both permanent and non-permanent membership categories, for which both countries have been working under the G4 framework that also includes Japan and Germany. The joint statement said that the leaders reaffirmed their commitment for mutual support for permanent membership of the two countries in an expanded UNSC and India welcomed Brazil’s support for India’s candidature for a non-permanent seat for the 2028-29 term.Kumaran said Lula gave a detailed presentation on Brazil’s substantial critical minerals and rare earth reserves. “He said only 30% of their reserves have been explored and there is substantial scope for exploration, processing minerals and also using them. He said Brazil would value India’s partnership,” said the official.

‘A shame’: England’s T20 World Cup 2026 captain Harry Brook criticizes potential Pakistan ban in The Hundred

England’s limited-overs captain Harry Brook has voiced his strong disapproval regarding reports that Pakistan players are being excluded from the Hundred 2026 auction by franchises under Indian ownership. Speaking from the T20 World Cup 2026 on February 21, 2026, Brook emphasized that the absence of such high-caliber talent would be a massive detriment to the competition’s quality and global appeal.

‘It would be a shame’: England captain Harry Brook calls for inclusivity

Addressing the media just a day before England’s high-stakes Super 8s match against Sri Lanka, the 26-year-old skipper was vocal about the importance of having the world’s best players, regardless of nationality. Brook expressed high regard for Pakistan’s cricketing prowess and the unique energy their players bring to any tournament.

“Pakistan have been a great cricket nation for many years and have some awesome players, some of the best players in the world. I think there’s about 50 or 60 players in the auction and it would be a shame to not see some of them in there. There’s some amazing cricketers and they bring some great crowds as well. So it would be a shame to not see some of the Pakistan players in there and make the tournament and competition even better.” Brook was quoted as saying by BBC Sports.

The controversy erupted following a BBC Sport investigation revealing that the four franchises recently acquired by Indian Premier League (IPL) owners, Manchester Super Giants, MI London, Southern Brave, and Sunrisers Leeds—are unlikely to consider Pakistan players during the March 11–12 auction.

The Hundred 2026: Brook’s new role at Sunrisers Leeds

Despite the friction surrounding his team’s ownership, Brook remains the face of Sunrisers Leeds (formerly Northern Superchargers). He is set to become the tournament’s highest-paid player with a staggering £465,000 (approx. ₹5.26 crore) fee, yet he has made the strategic decision to relinquish the captaincy to focus on his batting and international leadership.

“I am staying away from that stuff and will let the head coach and whoever is in charge control that. My main focus at the minute is to play the T20 World Cup.” Brook concluded.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has joined the outcry, urging the ECB to intervene immediately. Vaughan argued on social media that “the ECB need to act fast… they own the league and this should not be allowed to happen. The most inclusive sport in the country is not one that allows this to happen.” With the auction weeks away, the pressure is mounting on the ECB to ensure their anti-discrimination policies are upheld.
