‘A deal is a deal’: After Trump’s 15% global tariff blow, EU says it will accept no increase

'A deal is a deal': After Trump's 15% global tariff blow, EU says it will accept no increase

After US President Donald Trump’s global tariffs were invalidated by the American Supreme Court, the European Commission has urged the country to stick to last year’s EU-US trade agreement. Last week following the US Supreme Court’s ruling that deemed his global tariffs illegal, Trump quickly raised them from 10% to 15%.In response to the move, the Commission said, “The current situation is not conducive to delivering ‘fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial’ transatlantic trade and investment, as agreed to by both sides.” “A deal is a deal,” the bloc further added. The EU executive said Washington must provide “full clarity” on its intended actions following the court’s decision. The statement was stronger than the Commission’s initial reaction on Friday, which had said only that it was studying the outcome and maintaining communication with the U.S. administration. Last year’s trade deal set a 15% tariff on most EU goods entering the US, while allowing zero tariffs on certain products such as aircraft and spare parts. Some sector-specific tariffs, like those on steel, were excluded. The EU, in return, lifted import duties on numerous US goods and dropped plans for retaliatory levies. It is currently unclear whether Trump’s 15% tariffs override the deal. If so, EU products enjoying zero tariffs could lose their exemptions, and the new levies might be added on top of existing ‘most-favoured-nation’ US duties—something not permitted under the EU-US agreement. The new tariffs also remove the EU’s comparative advantage, as even countries without a trade deal now face the same 15% rate. According to Global Trade Alert, the EU could see a 0.8 percentage point increase in U.S. tariffs overall, with Italy facing a rise of 1.7 points, Reuters reported. “In particular, EU products must continue to benefit from the most competitive treatment, with no increases in tariffs beyond the clear and all-inclusive ceiling previously agreed,” the Commission said. It added that unpredictable tariffs disrupt markets and undermine global confidence. EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic discussed the situation with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Saturday.

NEW DELHI: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on Monday dismissed reports of any ‘major damage’ to a Tejas jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF), calling it a “minor technical incident on ground”.Refuting the earlier reports it said, “HAL acknowledges the recent media reports on the LCA Tejas incident and wishes to provide factual clarification. There has been no reported crash of the LCA Tejas. The event in question was a minor technical incident on ground.”Further assuring the safety record of Tejas jets, it added, “LCA Tejas maintains one of the world’s best safety records among contemporary fighter aircraft. As a standard operating procedure, the issue is being analysed in depth and HAL is working closely with the Indian Air Force (IAF) for a speedy resolution.”The statement comes after earlier media reports claimed that a Tejas light combat aircraft of IAF’s sustained major damage to its airframe after it overshot the runway at a frontline airbase following a suspected brake failure on February 7. According to earlier reports, the pilot of the aircraft had ejected safely.Tejas has been involved in two incidents in the past. The first incident occurred in March 2024, when a Tejas jet crashed near Jaisalmer. The second took place in November 2025, when another Tejas jet crashed during an aerial display at the Dubai Airshow. In February 2021, the ministry of defence signed a Rs 48,000 crore contract with HAL for the procurement of 83 Tejas Mk-1A jets for IAF. Deliveries have since faced delays, largely due to GE Aerospace missing multiple deadlines for supplying the aero engines that power the aircraft. In September last year, the defence ministry finalised another Rs 62,370 crore deal with HAL to procure 97 additional Tejas Mk-1A light combat aircraft for the IAF.The Tejas is a single-engine, multi-role fighter designed to operate in high-threat environments, capable of performing air defence, maritime reconnaissance, and strike missions.

WATCH: Abhishek Sharma’s dismissal after Keshav Maharaj-Corbin Bosch collision leaves Indian fan girl in tears

In a moment that perfectly encapsulated the anguish of a billion fans, a young Team India supporter was captured on camera fighting back tears after Abhishek Sharma’s dismissal during India’s disastrous T20 World Cup Super 8 clash against South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. The emotional scene unfolded as India’s hopes of chasing down 188 runs unravelled spectacularly, with the defending champions eventually suffering their biggest T20 World Cup defeat.

A fan’s heartbreak captured on camera

As Abhishek walked back to the pavilion after his 12-ball 15, broadcast cameras panned to the stands where a young girl was visibly emotional, bursting into tears at the terrible state of India’s innings. The image of the distraught fan, her eyes welling up as India slumped to 31 for 3 inside the powerplay, quickly went viral across social media platforms, becoming a poignant symbol of the nation’s collective heartbreak .

The stadium, packed to its 132,000 capacity, had fallen into stunned silence moments earlier when Corbin Bosch pulled off a sensational catch despite nearly colliding with teammate Keshav Maharaj. What could have been a costly misjudgment turned into a spectacular breakthrough, and for the young fan watching her heroes crumble, the disappointment was simply too much to bear.

Corbin Bosch takes a stunning catch despite colliding with Keshav Maharaj

The dismissal that triggered the emotional response came on the third ball of the fifth over. Marco Jansen bowled a clever knuckle ball to Abhishek, who failed to pick the variation and mistimed his shot badly. The ball ballooned high into the Ahmedabad night sky but did not carry much distance, creating chaos among the South African fielders.

From mid-wicket, Bosch sprinted to his right, while from mid-on, Maharaj tracked back sharply. For a moment, confusion loomed large as neither player called decisively. The two collided under the swirling ball, with Maharaj landing on top of Bosch just as the catch was taken.

Replays showed a clearly irritated Bosch looking back at Maharaj with a frosty expression, muttering something under his breath as he turned his back on the spinner. The moment of tension was quickly forgotten in the ensuing celebrations, but it underlined the high-stakes intensity of the contest.

Here’s the video:

Abhishek’s brief respite before another failure

For Abhishek, the dismissal marked another chapter in a nightmare tournament. The 25-year-old left-hander had entered the Super 8 clash after registering three consecutive ducks in the group stage against the USA, Pakistan, and the Netherlands. When he finally opened his account with a boundary off Aiden Markram in the first over, fans at the Narendra Modi Stadium breathed a collective sigh of relief.

The boundary gave Abhishek confidence, and he followed it with a cheeky ramp shot for six off Kagiso Rabada in the third over, using the pace of the South African speedster to perfection. Another full toss from Rabada was dispatched through the covers for a four, as the young opener looked to counter-attack and ignite India’s chase after early wickets.

However, his reckless impatience proved costly. Clearly frustrated at the lack of loose deliveries and desperate to dominate, Abhishek swung wildly at Jansen’s slower ball, miscuing it high on the leg side. His run of scores in the T20 World Cup now reads 0, 0, 0, and 15 – a sequence that has exposed India’s over-reliance on their openers.

The dismissal of Abhishek compounded India’s early troubles. Ishan Kishan fell for a four-ball duck in the very first over, edging Markram behind the wicket. Tilak Varma followed soon after in the second over, trapped by Jansen for just 1. At 26 for 3, India were in deep trouble, and Abhishek’s wicket only worsened the slide.

Washington Sundar failed to steady the innings and departed cheaply, while skipper Suryakumar Yadav could not anchor the chase either. At one stage, India were reeling at 51 for 5, a position few would have anticipated at the start of the innings. From there, things went from bad to worse, with the scoreboard reading a worrying 88 for 8 as wickets tumbled in quick succession.

The hosts were eventually bundled out for 111 in 18.5 overs, suffering a 76-run defeat.

‘We were humiliated on all fronts’: Ex-India captain fumes after Super 8 disaster | Cricket News

'We were humiliated on all fronts': Ex-India captain fumes after Super 8 disaster

Former India captain Kris Srikkanth launched a scathing attack on the Indian batting unit following their crushing 76-run defeat to South Africa national cricket team in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight clash in Ahmedabad.Chasing 188, India imploded spectacularly and were bundled out for 111 in the 19th over. The collapse was triggered early when in-form opener Ishan Kishan perished for a four-ball duck in the very first over, falling to the part-time off-spin of Aiden Markram.

Why India are in deep trouble | T20 World Cup 2026 | India vs South Africa

Reacting to the reckless start, Srikkanth did not mince his words while speaking on his YouTube channel.“Ishan Kishan was almost caught at mid-on the previous delivery, yet he is slogging the next ball. Was it necessary to slog the next delivery? Rinku Singh only scores single digits wherever he comes to bat. It’s easy to play in bilateral series compared to ICC events. The batters will now second-guess their approach going forward. Abhishek Sharma already went from striker to non-striker in this match.”The former opener also questioned the team’s batting order, pointing fingers at Suryakumar Yadav for not taking more responsibility.“Suryakumar Yadav made a big mistake. He should have come in at No.3. He only said all the spots except the openers are flexible. This left-right combination is all rubbish. It’s what led to Hardik Pandya coming at 7. Only playing good cricket and your mentality matters.”Suryakumar walked in at No.4 with India tottering at 5/2 and managed just 18 off 22 deliveries. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya was surprisingly pushed down to No.7, where he scored 18 from 17 balls.Srikkanth was particularly furious about the decision to send Washington Sundar ahead of established finishers when India were 26/3 in the fifth over. Sundar, promoted to No.5, made a laboured 11 off 11 balls as the chase slipped further away.“It was absolutely ridiculous. India were humiliated today on all fronts. It’s what we usually do to opponents, but the roles were reversed today. Hardik Pandya has done well in pressure situations at 5. He should have come in at No.5. Instead, they sent him at 7, which was totally unfair. Hardik Pandya coming in at No.7 was ridiculous decision-making,” said Srikkanth. He warned that the fallout from such a heavy defeat could linger.“The Indian batters’ mindsets will become further negative. India’s batting throughout the tournament has not been consistent. It’s just been bailed out by one or two players and even that went for a toss this match. Dube hit some sixes at the end, but it was all empty calories after the game was already over.”Apart from Shivam Dube’s 42, none of the Indian batters managed to cross 20, marking one of their most disappointing batting performances in recent memory and leaving their Super Eight campaign hanging in the balance.

TSA says PreCheck still operational after previous announcement of suspension during funding fight

TSA says PreCheck still operational after previous announcement of suspension during funding fight

DALLAS: The Transportation Security Administration said Sunday that its PreCheck program would remain operational despite an earlier announcement from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that the airport security service was being suspended during the partial government shutdown. ” As staffing constraints arise, TSA will evaluate on a case-by-case basis and adjust operations accordingly,” the agency said. Airport lines seemed largely unaffected through midday Sunday, with security check line wait times listed as under 15 minutes for most international airports, according to TSA’s mobile app. Amy Wainscott, 42, flew from the Destin-Fort Walton Beach airport in Florida to Dallas Love Field on Sunday and said she didn’t hear about the shutdown until she had already gone through TSA’s PreCheck. “When we got to the airport this morning everything was working like usual,” she said. “It didn’t seem like anything had changed.” Jean Fay, 54, said she had no issues going through TSA PreCheck at the Baltimore airport for her 6 a.m. Sunday flight back home to Texas. She didn’t hear about the shutdown until she was changing planes in Austin, Texas, on her way to Dallas Love Field. “When I landed in Austin I started getting the alerts,” she said. It was not immediately clear whether Global Entry, another airport service, would be affected. PreCheck and Global Entry are designed to help speed registered travelers through security lines, and suspensions would likely cause headaches and delays. Since starting in 2013, more than 20 million Americans are signed up for TSA PreCheck, according to the Department of Homeland Security, and millions of those Americans also have overlapping Global Entry memberships. Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program that allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers to use expedited kiosks when entering the United States from abroad. The turmoil is tied to a partial government shutdown that began Feb. 14 after Democrats and the White House were unable to reach a deal on legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security. Democrats have been demanding changes to immigration operations that are core to President Donald Trump’s deportation campaign. The security disruptions come at a time where a major winter storm will hit the East Coast from Sunday into Monday. Nine out of 10 flights going out of John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Boston Logan Airport have been canceled for Monday. Homeland Security previously said it was taking “emergency measures to preserve limited funds.” Among the steps listed were “ending Transportation Security Administration (TSA) PreCheck lanes and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Global Entry service, to refocus Department personnel on the majority of travelers.” “We are glad that DHS has decided to keep PreCheck operational and avoid a crisis of its own making,” said Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of the US Travel Association. Before announcing the PreCheck shutdown, Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement Saturday night that “shutdowns have serious real world consequences.” One group of fliers will definitely be affected, according to TSA. “Courtesy escorts, such as those for Members of Congress, have been suspended to allow officers to focus on the mission of securing America’s skies,” the agency said. Airlines for America, a trade group representing major carriers, said Saturday night that “it’s past time for Congress to get to the table and get a deal done.” It also criticized the announcement by saying it was “issued with extremely short notice to travelers, giving them little time to plan accordingly.” “A4A is deeply concerned that TSA PreCheck and Global Entry programs are being suspended and that the traveling public will be, once again, used as a political football amid another government shutdown,” the organization said. Democrats on the House Committee on Homeland Security criticized Homeland Security handling of airport security after the initial announcement on Saturday night. They accused the administration of “kneecapping the programs that make travel smoother and secure.” Sen. Andy Kim, a New Jersey Democrat, said Noem’s actions are part of an administration strategy to distract from other issues and shift responsibility. “This administration is trying to weaponize our government, trying to make things intentionally more difficult for the American people as a political leverage,” he told CNN on Sunday. “And the American people see that.”

'Mohabbat ki dukaan ka yoddha': Rahul Gandhi meets ‘Mohammad Deepak’, man who confronted Bajrang Dal members

NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday met Uttarakhand’s Kotdwar-based gym owner Deepak Kumar, or “Mohammad Deepak,” who confronted Bajrang Dal members allegedly harassing an elderly Muslim shopkeeper over the use of ‘Baba’ — which the right-wing group claimed was a Hindu term — in his shop name.In a social media post on X, Indian National Congress shared photos of Rahul along with Deepak and said, “Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi met ‘Mohammad Deepak’ from Uttarakhand. Mohammad Deepak has set an example of unity, brotherhood, and courage — one that will inspire every young person in the country to stand against injustice and hatred.”“Deepak is a warrior of the ‘Mohabbat ki dukaan’ — the entire nation is proud of him,” it added. In January, Bajrang Dal activists staged a protest outside the ‘Baba’ clothing store on Patel Marg, demanding that its 70-year-old owner, Vakil Ahmed, change the shop’s name.Clashes broke out between the protesters, Ahmed, and Deepak, who is a friend of Ahmed’s son, prompting police intervention. The situation was brought under control, and police later registered three separate FIRs in connection with the incidents.Tensions flared again after a video circulated by the Hindu Raksha Dal showed a man threatening to march to Kotdwara on February 12 to “teach Deepak a lesson.”The local administration stepped up security to prevent further escalation. Additional Superintendent of Police Chandra Mohan Singh said no one would be allowed to disturb peace in the town and warned of strict action against those attempting to incite trouble.

Why are gold prices rising? Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman explains

Why are gold prices rising? Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman explains

Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday explained the reason behind the rise in gold prices and assured that the government is closely monitoring the hikes. After the customary post-Budget meeting with the Central Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of India, she said, “Most countries today, particularly their central banks, are buying gold and silver and storing them...Now the spike is largely due to central banks also buying and storing.” The FM further noted, “Gold has always been a favoured investment for households…The high-pitched demand for domestic consumption also sees a seasonal spike during festival season…We are watching it, but I’m not sure it has reached such alarming proportions. I think it has not gone beyond a certain limit. But of course, RBI will also be monitoring it.”Meanwhile, the yellow metal has continued to climb, mirroring global trends amid fresh tariff related concerns. Gold prices jumped Rs 2,946 to Rs 1,59,822 per 10 gram in Monday’s futures trade. On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), April gold contracts rose by Rs 2,946, or 1.88%, to Rs 1,59,822 per 10 grams, with a business turnover of 7,515 lots. Internationally, gold futures on Comex gained $96.61, or 1.9%, to $5,177.51 per ounce. She also spoke on the India-US trade deal, saying the finance ministry is assessing the possible impact of the Supreme Court of the United States’s ruling that struck down Donald Trump’s tariff framework. “It is early to comment,” she said. The development followed a landmark verdict by the US Supreme Court, which struck down Trump’s emergency tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), declaring them illegal and reshaping the global tariff landscape. She also urged the nation to contribute to the country’s economic growth, “everybody should participate in India’s growth story. The post-Budget meeting was attended by Sitharaman, minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary, and the RBI governor.
