India-US trade deal: White House removes pulses from factsheet – changes key text

India-US trade deal: White House removes pulses from factsheet - changes key text

The United States has revised its factsheet on the recently announced “historic trade deal” with India, removing a reference to pulses, changing the wording relating to the $500 billion purchase “commitment” and more. The two countries announced reaching a trade deal last week, after which the White House released a factsheet on Tuesday, describing what it called the “path forward.” In the earlier version of the document, Washington had said, “India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on all U.S. industrial goods and a wide range of US food and agricultural products, including dried distillers’ grains (DDGs), red sorghum, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruit, certain pulses, soybean oil, wine and spirits, and additional products.” The updated factsheet no longer carries any mention of pulses. In another change, the fact releated to India’s proposed purchase of goods from the United States has also been modified. The earlier text had stated that India was “committed” to make a purchase of $500 billion from the country, now it has been changed to “intend.” It said, “India committed to buy more American products and purchase over $500 billion of US energy, information and communication technology, agricultural, coal, and other products.” However, the revised version has removed the mention of agricultural goods from the text. It now reads, “India intends to buy more American products and purchase over $500 billion of US energy, information and communication technology, coal, and other products.Furthermore, White House’s updated factsheet also removed the text relating to India’s removal of its digital services taxes. Earlier the text said, “India will remove its digital services taxes and committed to negotiate a robust set of bilateral digital trade rules that address discriminatory or burdensome practices and other barriers to digital trade, including rules that prohibit the imposition of customs duties on electronic transmissions.” It now states, “India committed to negotiate a robust set of bilateral digital trade rules that address discriminatory or burdensome practices and other barriers to digital trade.”The two nations announced reaching an interim trade agreement after almost a year of negotiations that began February 2025. Under the plan, India is set to gain from duties reduced to 18% from 50% across a range of exports, including textiles and garments, leather and footwear, plastic and rubber goods, organic chemicals, home decor products, artisanal items and select machinery categories. The agreement was announced last week following a telephone conversation between PM Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, during which the two leaders settled on a framework for an Interim Agreement. India and US were engaged in multiple rounds of trade talks in recent months after negotiations faltered when the Trump imposed 50% tariffs on imports from New Delhi. Of the total, a 25% duty was introduced in August, with Washington alleging that India was fueling Russia’s “war machine” in Ukraine through its purchases.

12-year-old pillion rider crushed to death by container truck as biker brakes when police vehicle comes from wrong direction; Mumbai police book both drivers | Mumbai News

Mumbai: A 12-year-old pillion rider fell off the bike and got crushed under the wheels of a container truck after her father was forced to apply sudden brakes when a police vehicle came from the wrong direction near Reay Road on Tuesday. Sewri police have registered a case against both the vehicle drivers for causing death by negligence and dangerous driving under the BNS and Motor Vehicles Act.The incident took place at 11.30am on BPT road under Eastern Freeway when Dongri resident Abdul Wahid Vora (42), who is a tuition teacher, and his daughter Ayat, a class V student, were on their way to meet relatives in Kurla. “Vora, who was wearing a helmet, was riding next to the container truck in the northbound carriageway. Suddenly, an SUV, driven by Sharad Mukunde (41) of the motor transport department which comes under Mumbai Police, came in front of him from the opposite direction. Vora panicked and applied brakes. Due to the sudden jerk, his daughter, who was riding pillion, fell on the road and was run over by the rear tyres of the container truck,” said a police officer. Other motorists alerted Sewri police about the mishap and they arrived at the spot. They rushed Ayat to KEM Hospital, where she was declared dead. Police seized the container truck and the SUV and detained the two drivers. “Mukunde and an officer were heading to south Mumbai. Since there was a traffic jam, Mukunde drove on the wrong side of the road, which caused the accident,” the officer said. “The container truck, which came from Pune, was carrying an export consignment of newly manufactured cars to a cargo ship.” Police said blood examination tests confirmed that the two drivers were not drunk at the time of the incident.

Motorist rams into 4-year-old in basement of Mumbai building, parks car, and leaves; boy dies | Mumbai News

Mumbai: A four-year-old boy, the only child of his parents, died after a speeding SUV rammed into him in the basement of his housing society in Malad East and the motorist walked off without taking him to a doctor.Dindoshi police initially lodged a case of negligence and arrested the motorist, businessman Ramesh Jatara (45), on the day of the incident on Feb 7. A holiday court granted him bail the next day. However, before he was released from jail, a cousin of the victim, Laksh Singh, informed police that Jatara had been warned in the past against rash driving in the building compound, but he paid no heed. Police then added stronger sections of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and informed the court about it on Monday. Jatara was re-arrested from Thane prison on Tuesday.“Had Jatara rushed my son to the hospital immediately after the incident, there could have been some hope for his survival,” said Laksh’s father, Jayprakash Singh, as he broke down.Laksh was born to Jayprakash, who runs a wholesale groceries business, and his wife more than two decades after their marriage. The Singhs reside at Neelyog Virat, a highrise off Western Express Highway in Malad. The society has deployed two security guards in the basement — two levels underground — where children from the society sometimes play. Police said Jatara owns an apartment in Neelyog Virat, but has rented it out. He uses the basement parking for his SUV and lives in another society nearby. On Feb 7, Laksh and a few of his friends were playing in the B-2 level basement, when around 4.30pm, an SUV came hurtling downstairs. Sunil Jaiswal, a 38-year-old guard who was on duty in the basement, heard a shrill cry followed by a muffled sound. He rushed to check what had happened. “The SUV had hit a child and dragged him along. The boy [Laksh] was bruised all over and his toy was broken. I picked him up and made him sit on a chair. But the motorist [Jatara] drove ahead to park his vehicle,” Jaiswal said. After parking the SUV, Jatara reportedly told Jaiswal and his co-worker to find the injured boy’s family and take him home. He then left.“I had been hired only two days ago and did not know where the child lived,” said Jaiswal, who offered Laksh some water and stayed with him. Some time later, Laksh’s cousin came looking for him and found him injured. He alerted Laksh’s family who moved him to a private hospital in the vicinity. But Laksh succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy examination, which will give his cause of death, is awaited.“We had a wedding in the family on Feb 5 and a large number of guests had come to stay with us. Jatara turned a moment of celebration into a mourning period for us,” said Jayprakash. After completing Laksh’s last rites on Sunday, the family learnt that Jatara had been granted bail by a holiday court. “Our relatives gathered at the police station and demonstrated for justice. A cousin gave a police statement as to how Jatara had been warned in the past against rash driving. Police then added stricter charges against him,” said Jayprakash.“We want the strictest possible punishment for Jatara. Laksh was the apple of our eyes…he has been snatched from us at a tender age,” said his mother.

UK: Teen arrested for stabbing two boys at London school

UK: Teen arrested for stabbing two boys at London school

UK police on Tuesday arrested a teenage suspect after two boys were stabbed at a school in northwest London, with counter-terrorism officers taking charge of the probe amid concerns over the circumstances of the attack. The suspect, believed to be 13, was arrested several hours after fleeing Kingsbury High School, where the stabbing took place just after midday. Police said the boys, aged 12 and 13, were taken to hospital and were in serious condition. The suspected weapon has been recovered.“The suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody for questioning,” detective chief superintendent Luke Williams told reporters at the scene. He said police were keeping an open mind on the motive, adding that while the incident has not been declared a terrorist attack, counter-terrorism officers are leading the investigation. Police said they were not looking for any other suspects.Students were still being interviewed by officers hours after the school day ended, according to media reports.Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said she was “heartbroken” by the incident and that her department was in touch with the school and local council to offer support. The stabbings come amid growing concern over teenage knife violence in the UK, particularly in London, and a rise in violent incidents in schools, according to teaching unions. Last week, a 15-year-old boy in Wales was remanded in custody after being charged with the attempted murder of a female teacher in a knife attack. The London Ambulance Service said two patients were treated, with one taken to hospital and the other to a major trauma centre as a priority. In a letter to parents, Kingsbury High School headteacher Alex Thomas described the incident as “deeply traumatic” for the school community, adding that the situation was under control. Some parts of the school, which has nearly 2,000 pupils aged 11 to 18, will remain closed on Wednesday.

'Either Naravane Or Penguin Is Lying': Rahul Gandhi Reacts To Publisher's Statement On Memoir

‘Either Naravane Or Penguin Is Lying’: Rahul Gandhi Reacts To Publisher’s Statement On Memoir

“Penguin has issued a public statement, clearly stating that General Naravane’s memoir has not yet been published in any format. They also claimed copyright,” he said, adding what Rahul has done by showing a copy of the book is a violation of copyright law. “What is this? You are leader of the opposition and are citing fake stuff,” he said.BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi added that the stand taken by Penguin and Naravane have exposed Rahul and destroyed the “fiction” he was trying to narrate in the Lok Sabha. “His figment of imagination has been destroyed by both the publisher and the author.” His crime is “unpardonable” and he must apologise, he said. While Rahul was questioning others over his claim, it is now clear that he was the only person who was lying during this entire episode, Trivedi said, accusing him of raising doubts over a critical issue like national security.

'Going to Colombo will be a challenge': India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate on why Pakistan have the edge

NEW DELHI: India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said on Tuesday the team has always been mentally ready to face Pakistan in their T20 World Cup league match. The two rivals are set to meet on February 15, and Ten Doeschate stressed that off-field issues never distracted the Indian camp from its preparations.

How PCB, ICC, BCB reached a resolution on India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup match

He admitted Pakistan might have a slight advantage since they have already been in Colombo for two weeks, but India are concentrating on delivering its best performance. “It’s going to be a challenge going to Colombo, where Pakistan have been for the last two weeks, and we’re fully focused on just bringing our best game to that fixture next week,” he told the reporters. With India playing Namibia on February 12 in their second encounter of the ongoing T20 World Cup, clarity over Pakistan’s participation means both teams can treat the match purely as a sporting contest. Meanwhile, India opener Abhishek Sharma missed the team’s first training session in New Delhi due to illness and stomach problems, raising doubts about his availability for the Namibia match. He had a poor start to the tournament with a golden duck against the USA and didn’t field in that match, with Sanju Samson replacing him. At a team dinner hosted by coach Gautam Gambhir, Abhishek left early, adding to health concerns. “Abhi (Abhishek Sharma) has still got a few issues with his tummy, but we are hopeful he will be available for the game in two days time. Bumrah is also feeling and moving a lot better,” he said on Tuesday. Jasprit Bumrah also missed the USA match due to illness. India may rest Abhishek to ensure he is fully fit for the Pakistan game, with Sanju Samson possibly opening in his place. Abhishek is seen as a key player due to his explosive T20 batting, and despite his early failure, the team values his impact. India still beat the USA by 29 runs, thanks to Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten 84 and strong bowling from Siraj and Arshdeep Singh.

Abhishek Sharma hospitalised ahead of T20 World Cup clash vs Namibia | Cricket News

Abhishek Sharma got out for a golden duck vs the USA and missed the side’s first training session in Delhi on Tuesday.

Abhishek Sharma has been hospitalised due to a stomach infection and remains doubtful for India’s next match against Namibia in New Delhi. It has been reliably learnt that he was unwell even before the previous game against the USA, and his condition worsened after he took the field in the T20 World Cup opener on February 7. The youngster was running a high temperature in Mumbai and was administered drips for immediate relief. The left-hander skipped the team’s first training session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday. While “upset stomach” is the official word from the Indian camp, TimesofIndia.com has learnt that he is suffering from an infection.

Inside India’s net session ahead of T20 World Cup match vs Namibia

“Abhi (Abhishek) still has a few issues with his tummy. We are hopeful that he’ll be available for the game in two days’ time,” assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said during a media interaction on Tuesday. After being dismissed for a golden duck in the tournament opener, the aggressive southpaw did not come out to field and was not spotted in the team dugout or dressing room. Sanju Samson fielded for the entire innings, forcing fielding coach T Dilip to wear the bib and handle drinks duties along with Kuldeep Yadav. This was because Washington Sundar had not yet joined the squad, while Jasprit Bumrah was also unwell. Although Bumrah made a brief appearance during one of the drinks breaks, the responsibilities were largely shared between Kuldeep and Dilip. Abhishek did not even come out for the post-match handshakes.Although he travelled with the team to Delhi, his condition deteriorated over the last 24 hours. Abhishek was seen with the rest of the squad outside head coach Gautam Gambhir’s residence on February 8, but all was not well. Towards the latter part of the innings, Gambhir appeared visibly concerned when Abhishek was dismissed. “Aaram se, jaldi khaa liyo (take it easy, eat early),” was the Indian coach’s brief advice to the youngster. In Abhishek’s absence during the practice session, Sanju Samson was the first batter to take to the nets and looked uncomfortable while facing Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh. The wicketkeeper-batter appeared low on confidence and had a scratchy session before receiving extended treatment on his left arm.“We’re waiting on Abhi’s fitness more than anything, and that will again open up a few different combinations,” ten Doeschate said while discussing possible Playing XI options.Wednesday’s net session and the pre-match press conference are expected to provide greater clarity on Abhishek’s fitness and recovery timeline.
