Maharashtra: Court convicts Bangladeshi couple for illegal stay, orders for their deportation | Mumbai News

Thane: A sessions court convicted a Bangladeshi couple of illegally entering and residing in India without valid documents and ordered their deportation after they completed their sentence of one year and 10 days of simple imprisonment.Riyaz Almin Mulla (24) and his wife, Soniya alias Sathi Riyaj Mulla (22), were arrested by Shil-Diaghar police on Jan 26, 2025, after a tip-off about foreign nationals living under false identities in the Uttar Shivgaon area. Acting on the information, a police team set up a naka-bandi and intercepted an autorickshaw carrying the couple. When questioned, they gave vague details about their residence and could not produce passports, visas, or any documents authorising their stay in India. During interrogation, the couple admitted they were residents of villages in Bangladesh and entered India illegally in search of a livelihood. Mobile phones seized from them showed the use of international calling applications, which strengthened the prosecution’s case. While police invoked provisions of the Passport (Entry into India) Rules, 1950, and Section 14A of the Foreigners Act, 1946, the court acquitted them of these charges, observing that mandatory legal requirements were not fulfilled. However, it held that the prosecution successfully proved the offence under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, which deals with illegal entry and stay. The court noted that under the Foreigners Act, the burden of proving Indian citizenship lies on the accused, which they failed to discharge. Both admitted during their statements that they were Bangladeshi nationals. Considering the couple spent nearly a year in custody and pleaded poverty, the court imposed a sentence of imprisonment already undergone, with an additional 10 days and a fine of Rs 1,000 each. It ordered the disposal of the seized mobile phones and directed jail and police authorities to initiate immediate deportation proceedings.

‘When told I’m 75, I said 25 yrs left’: PM Modi tells students to focus on future | India News

'When told I'm 75, I said 25 yrs left': PM Modi tells students to focus on future

NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi on Friday urged students not to view success in exams as the sole purpose of their education and said an individual’s character and temperament, and not just grades, determine success in life. “Education is not only for exams but for life. Exams are meant to examine oneself,” Modi said at his annual ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’ interaction, aimed at helping students cope with exam pressure, adding that the ultimate goal is not marks but the holistic development of life. Modi said he believes in focusing on future goals instead of obsessing about what has happened. “A leader told me, you have turned 75. I replied, 25 are still left. I don’t count what has passed. I count what is left,” he said. His advice to students was: “Don’t waste time counting what’s passed. Think about living what lies ahead.”

The arrest came after high drama at his Patna residence, where police arrived to take him into custody.Speaking to reporters, Yadav said he was unwell and expressed fears over his safety. “I am not well… I don’t know what will happen with me,” he said.Ahead of the arrest, Yadav told ANI that he feared the police might harm him and insisted that he wanted to be taken directly to court instead of a police station. He said the court had summoned him the next day and suggested that house arrest could have been considered. He also questioned the police for arriving in civil clothes, saying he initially thought they had come to kill him. Referring to the case, he noted that it was registered nearly 35 years ago and questioned the need for his arrest at this stage.“I have doubt that these people might have killed me. I will go straight to the Court. I will not go to the police station. If they want, they can house arrest me. The Court has called me. Police reached here in civil uniform like criminals. I thought they had come to kill me. Is this a criminal’s house? There was a case registered around 35 years ago, and the police came to arrest me in connection with that case,” Pappu Yadav said.Later, the Independent MP was admitted to IGIMS hospital following health concerns.Patna SP City Bhanu Pratap Singh said the case was registered under the old Indian Penal Code, which has since been replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The arrest is being made under these sections. This case concerns the Gardanibagh police station. The trial was ongoing in court, and the MP was supposed to appear, but he did not appear on the scheduled date. Therefore, he is being arrested,” Singh told reporters. He added that Pappu Yadav has been provided with medical supplies and that his caretaker is accompanying him. The MP is being taken for a medical examination, after which he will be produced at the police station.

Navi Mumbai: Civic body official, middleman arrested in Rs 2 lakh bribery case | Mumbai News

Navi Mumbai: An assistant development officer in-charge at Cidco’s registration office in Nerul was arrested by the Navi Mumbai Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) team for allegedly demanding Rs 4 lakh as a bribe from a contractor for issuing a Cidco transfer certificate for an apartment in Sanpada and, after negotiation, accepting a Rs 2 lakh bribe through a middleman.Shailesh Gharat (57) held additional charge at the Cidco registration office, and the middleman Nagendra Pandey (58), is a resident of Ghansoli. Both accused were remanded to police custody for two days, ACB deputy SP Dharmaraj Sonke said.

Islamabad Suicide Blast, Bangladesh Crisis, RBI’s Fraud Compensation And More

Sonke stated, “The trap was laid at a hotel near Nerul railway station, where the complainant contractor was told to meet Pandey, whom Gharat allegedly sent as a middleman. On June 11 last year, the contractor submitted an online application to the Cidco office seeking a transfer certificate for an apartment in Sanpada, for which he held the power of attorney. However, Pandey demanded the bribe to issue the certificate. Hence, the complainant lodged a complaint with the ACB office on Jan 22.”Sonke said, “Upon verification of the complaint on Jan 27, Gharat’s bribery was confirmed, with Pandey as the middleman. Accordingly, a trap was laid on Jan 28 afternoon at a hotel near Nerul railway station, where Pandey was caught red-handed while accepting the Rs 2 lakh bribe from the complainant. As Pandey claimed that he had accepted the bribe on behalf of Gharat, our team reached the Cidco registration office in Nerul and arrested Gharat. We seized the mobile phones of both Gharat and Pandey for examination of technical evidence. The process of conducting a house search of Gharat is underway. An FIR has been registered at Nerul police station against the accused Gharat and Pandey under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.”

Minor has right over reproductive choice: Supreme Court | India News

Minor has right over reproductive choice: Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: A minor’s mother sought Supreme Court’s permission for termination of her daughter’s pregnancy, taking into consideration that the child would be illegitimate and the girl had to live her life with mental trauma and social stigma. The court said the girl has a right over her reproductive autonomy. The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, 1971 allows abortion up to 20 weeks based on the opinion of one registered medical practitioner, and up to 24 weeks for specific categories of women (including rape survivors and minors) with the opinion of two doctors. Contending that she did not want to give birth to the child, the petitioner sought abortion on the grounds that continuing with pregnancy and giving birth would cause her trauma. Maharashtra govt however, told the court that the fetus at 30 weeks had a beating heart and termination at this stage would result in premature birth of a child who would face the risk of abnormality. The lawyer for the state, Devanshi Singh, contended that the baby could be handed over to an orphanage. The bench asked the state whose interests it was trying to protect. The lawyer responded that it was for the court to take a call. She also brought to the notice of the bench an earlier order passed by SC in 2017, when termination of more than 30 weeks pregnancy was allowed as the girl was only 13 and a rape survivor. Considering the totality of the situation, the court passed the order in favour of the girl but said that termination of pregnancy should not result in feticide. “It is an illegitimate child. We don’t want to comment on the relationship. They cannot get married and she has to carry the stigma for the rest of her life. We have to consider her mental aspect. Can the court ask her to continue with the pregnancy and deliver the child? If we do, then people would not come to court to seek permission and they would go to quack and illegal centres for abortion and life and health would be put at risk,” the bench said. “Whose interest would prevail is the question. It is very difficult to decide,” the SC bench said. With any delay likely to complicate the situation further, the bench directed termination of pregnancy. “We direct the JJ Group of Hospitals, Mumbai, to conduct the procedure of medical termination of pregnancy of the daughter of the appellant herein by bearing in mind all medical safeguards,” the bench said. The mother had moved SC, through lawyer Shantanu Adkar, after her plea was rejected by Bombay HC, which had held that a forced termination would amount to feticide as the “fetus is healthy and viable”. It had directed that the teen be provided comprehensive medical and psychological support until her delivery and the child be given away to a registered orphanage. According to the petition, the pregnancy was the result of the girl’s relationship with a friend. The mother alleged that the friend had forced the girl into a physical relationship after promising to marry her and FIR had been filed against him.

Shehbaz Sharif backs Bangladesh stance: ‘Won’t play India’; Suryakumar Yadav says, ‘Our flight to Colombo is booked’ | Cricket News

Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif, and India captain Suryakumar Yadav.

The impasse over the India-Pakistan T20 WC match showed no signs of being resolved, after Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif weighed in on the issue, calling their boycott of the February 15 match against India in Colombo an “appropriate decision”. It was a “considered stance” to support Bangladesh, he said.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!“We have taken a very clear stand on the T20 World Cup that we won’t play the match against India because there should be no politics on the sports field. We have taken a very considered stance, and we should completely stand by Bangladesh, and I think this is a very appropriate decision. We are with Bangladesh,” the PM said.

T20 World Cup | ‘Our flight is booked and we are going’ – Suryakumar Yadav on Pakistan’s boycott

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Nazrul acknowledged Sharif’s decision. “Thank you, Pakistan,” Nazrul wrote in a social media post.As the start of this contentious World Cup nears, speaking at a pre-tournament captain’s press conferences from two different locations – Mumbai’s BCCI headquarters and from Colombo — both teams’ captains broke their silence on the issue.“We haven’t refused to play against Pakistan. They have refused. The mindset is pretty clear. We have not said no, it has come from them,” India skipper Suryakumar Yadav said.“The ICC has given a fixture, BCCI and the (Indian) govt has decided with the ICC on playing at a neutral venue. Our flight is booked for Colombo and we are going,” he added.

India vs Pakistan

Salman Ali Agha, his Pakistani opposite number, said, “The India game is not in our control. It’s the govt’s and PCB’s decision and we respect that. Whatever they are going to say, we will do that.”“If we have to play them again in the semifinal or final, we will have to go back to them (govt) and act on their advice,” added the Pakistan skipper. The Indian captain acknowledged that the situation is “not easy” for those involved in the issue, including the ICC.“I feel it is not an easy job. It is not my call. I am sure they (the ICC) might be working out something as well but it has come from the other govt or the nation, how can they (the ICC) help as well? Their (Pakistan’s) decision is not in my control. I wish I could take their decisions, but then it is their call,” said Suryakumar.“We have been told that we have to play a game in Colombo on Feb 15th. We played them three times in the Asia Cup, we played some good cricket. We won (all the matches) and we were very happy. Similarly, if we get an opportunity in Colombo, we will definitely play,” he added.Earlier, Inter national Cricket Council (ICC) had expressed serious concerns over the Pakistan govt’s decision.“This position of selective participation is difficult to reconcile with the fundamental premise of a global sporting event where all qualified teams are expected to compete on equal terms per the event schedule,” it had said. “This decision is not in the interest of the global game or the welfare of fans worldwide.”

PAK vs NED, T20 World Cup 2026 Match Prediction: Who will win today’s game between Pakistan and Netherlands?

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 gets off to an exciting start with a Group A encounter between Netherlands and Pakistan in Colombo on February 7. Both sides will be eager to begin their World Cup journey on a winning note, knowing that early momentum can make a huge difference in a tightly contested group where every point counts.

Pakistan walk into the tournament opener brimming with confidence after a dominant 3-0 series sweep against Australia. Their recent performances underline a side operating at peak efficiency, with contributions flowing from both bat and ball. Netherlands, on the other hand, come in with mixed results and lingering concerns following their recent outings, particularly against stronger opposition.

The Dutch team endured a difficult series against Bangladesh, where results did not go their way. One match was completely washed out by rain, while the other two saw Bangladesh register comfortable wins, chasing targets with plenty of overs to spare. Although Netherlands enjoyed convincing victories against Italy and Guernsey earlier in the year 2025, those wins came against comparatively weaker teams and did little to answer questions about their ability to compete with top-tier sides. To challenge Pakistan, their batters will need to show greater consistency, and their bowlers must strike early to apply pressure.

Sinhalese Sports Club Pitch Report

The Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo is widely regarded as a venue that gradually tilts the balance in favour of spin bowling, particularly as a match progresses. In the early stages of a T20 contest, the pitch is generally true and even, providing consistent bounce that helps batters play through the line with confidence. Stroke-makers can settle quickly, time the ball well, and take full advantage of the powerplay, when scoring freely is often easier.

As the innings move on, the surface begins to show signs of wear. The pitch slows down, and the ball starts gripping more, which brings spinners into the game. Turn becomes more pronounced, and uneven bounce can creep in, making shot-making increasingly challenging. These conditions often place the chasing team under pressure, as timing the ball cleanly becomes harder in the second innings. Skilled spin bowlers can use the surface smartly, varying pace and flight to restrict scoring and force mistakes.

Because of these changing conditions, captains usually prefer to bat first after winning the toss.
