Indonesia to procure BrahMos missiles from India: Report

Indonesia has reached an agreement with India to acquire the BrahMos missile system, a spokesperson for Indonesia’s defence ministry confirmed on Monday.Defence ministry spokesperson Rico Ricardo Sirait told news agency Reuters that the deal forms part of Jakarta’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its military capabilities. In 2023, BrahMos Aerospace, a company jointly owned by the governments of India and Russia, told Reuters it was in advanced discussions with Jakarta on a potential agreement estimated to be worth between $200 million and $350 million.Rico said the agreement was “part of the modernisation of military hardware and defence capabilities, especially in the maritime sector.”However, he declined to confirm the overall value of the deal.BrahMos Aerospace secured its first international contract in 2022 with the Philippines, a Southeast Asian neighbour of Indonesia.

Neither BrahMos Aerospace nor Ministry of Defence immediately responded to requests for comment. The BrahMos missile is a supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia and produced by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia. Named after the Brahmaputra River in India and the Moskva River in Russia, the missile is among the fastest operational cruise missiles in the world, capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 2.8 to 3. It can be launched from multiple platforms including land, warships, submarines and aircraft such as the Sukhoi Su-30MKI operated by the Indian Air Force. Initially developed with a range of around 290 km, newer versions have extended ranges of over 400 km. Known for its high precision and ability to fly at low altitudes to evade radar, the BrahMos missile is a key component of the strike capabilities of the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, and has also been exported to countries such as the Philippines as India expands its defence exports.

'We cannot assist once you exit Iran': Indians asked not to approach land borders without embassy coordination

NEW DELHI: The Indian Embassy in Tehran has issued an advisory asking Indian nationals in Iran not to approach any of the country’s land border points for travel out of the country without prior coordination with the mission. In a statement, the embassy said any movement towards land border crossings must be undertaken only after obtaining explicit guidance from the Indian mission.“Indian nationals are hereby advised not to approach any of the land borders of Iran for travel outside the country without prior coordination with the embassy,” the advisory said. The embassy cautioned that it may not be able to assist individuals once they leave Iranian territory but fail to enter a third country.“It may please be noted that the Embassy will not be in a position to extend assistance once individuals have exited Iranian territory and are unable to enter the third country concerned,” the statement added. The mission said it remains available to assist Indian nationals in Iran and urged them to stay in touch through its emergency helplines. The embassy shared helpline numbers: +98-9128109115, +98-9128109102, +98-9128109109 and +98-9932179359, along with the email address cons.tehran@mea.gov.in for consular support. The advisory comes as the embassy continues to monitor the situation and coordinate with Indian nationals in Iran regarding travel and safety.Earlier in the day, external affairs minister S Jaishankar told Parliament that India believes that dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate the tensions in the Middle East. While outlining India’s stand in Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is closely monitoring the developments and relevant ministries are coordinating to ensure effective responses.“The Prime Minister continues to closely monitor the emerging developments, and relevant ministries are coordinating to ensure effective responses. Given the gravity of the situation, the Cabinet Committee of Security (CCS) met on March 1, under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister. It was briefed on the airstrikes in Iran and the subsequent attacks in several Gulf countries. The CCS was concerned over the safety and security of the Indian community in the region,” he added. The EAM said that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is of “particular concern” for India as over one crore Indians live and work in the Gulf nations and region. He also added that the region is key to India’s energy security and includes many important suppliers of oil and gas.

‘Nothing to do with the stadium’: Harbhajan Singh shuts down Ahmedabad ‘panauti’ talk | Cricket News

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has brushed aside the notion that the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad brings bad luck for the Indian team, stressing that the outcome of matches depends entirely on how the players perform on the day. The debate around the venue intensified after India’s defeat to Australia national cricket team in the final of the 2023 Cricket World Cup at the same stadium. However, Harbhajan insisted the loss had nothing to do with the ground itself and was simply down to Australia playing better cricket in that match.

Ahmedabad erupts as Team India arrive at hotel after T20 World Cup win

“When two good teams play against each other, one will obviously lose. When India played against Australia (in 2023), Australia were the better team on that particular day. In this game, we saw if you put your right foot forward from ball one, you will get the results. Whatever people used to think, that this ground is a ‘panauti’ (unlucky) or whatsoever I have heard on social media, that is done and dusted now.” Harbhajan also pointed out that similar perceptions had once existed about another iconic venue, Eden Gardens in Kolkata, before results eventually turned around. “Lot of people talk about Eden Gardens as well. Eden didn’t have the best of records, but somewhere down the line it changed. Luckily, in our era, we managed to do that. Lot of people talk about this Ahmedabad stadium as well – if the game is happening there, India might lose. But it has nothing to do with the cricketers or the result of the game. It is the mindset of the people who have never played cricket,” Harbhajan told India Today. His remarks follow similar views expressed by fellow off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who also urged fans not to treat the Ahmedabad venue as a jinx ahead of India’s final clash against New Zealand national cricket team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. “You can lose a game at a venue and win the next one. What is there in this? We have won a lot of games in that stadium. Don’t make a stadium like this taboo,” Ashwin said on his show Ash ki Baat while discussing the conversation surrounding the venue before the title clash. The veteran spinner, who has played 106 Tests for India, added that the current Indian team would not be distracted by such narratives. “I don’t think it should come into the way. I am sure, after a point of time, that monkey on the back will be there. But now, I don’t think the team will be thinking on those lines,” he added.

We sincerely thank the Government of Karnataka, the KSCA, and the Karnataka Police for their support in making this possible,” Menon added.Cricketing activity at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium had been suspended since June last year following a tragic stampede during RCB’s IPL 2025 title celebrations, in which 11 people lost their lives and several others were injured. The upcoming season will mark the return of IPL matches to the iconic Bengaluru venue.

2020 Delhi riots case: Court grants 10-day interim bail to Sharjeel Imam | India News

2020 Delhi riots case: Court grants 10-day interim bail to Sharjeel Imam

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Monday granted 10-day interim bail to Sharjeel Imam in a case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots, for attending his brother’s wedding.Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai was hearing the interim bail application filed by Imam, seeking relief for six weeks to attend the marriage scheduled this month. The court granted interim bail from March 20 to 30.Imam is an accused in the case pertaining to the February 2020 riots in northeast Delhi that left 53 people dead and more than 700 injured. The interim bail comes months after the Supreme Court of India rejected Imam’s regular bail plea in January this year. At the time, the top court had refused bail to Imam and fellow student activist Umar Khalid in the Delhi riots conspiracy case.In its January 6 order, the Supreme Court said that delay in trial and long incarceration cannot be a “trump card” to secure bail in cases registered under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The court observed that while personal liberty is important, it cannot be the sole factor when allegations involve serious offences affecting public order and national security. The bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria rejected the bail pleas of Khalid and Imam but granted relief to five co-accused in the case. Those granted bail included Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa-ur-Rehman, Mohd Saleem Khan and Shadab Ahmad. The court said Khalid and Imam stood on a different footing compared with the other accused due to the “hierarchy of culpability”. Both activists have spent more than five years in jail in connection with the case. The riots erupted in February 2020 during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, leading to communal clashes in parts of northeast Delhi during the visit of then US President Donald Trump to India. The Supreme Court had said the two accused could apply for bail again after one year or after all protected witnesses in the trial had been examined, whichever occurs earlier. The top court also said that the mere passage of time cannot automatically justify bail in cases involving offences under special statutes such as UAPA. It stressed that courts must balance constitutional protections under Article 21 with Parliament’s intent behind stricter bail conditions in laws dealing with national security related offences.

After India’s historic 96-run victory over New Zealand in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final, the Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav, head coach Gautam Gambhir and ICC Chairman Jay Shah visited a Hanuman temple in Ahmedabad with the gleaming trophy. The visit, captured in heartwarming videos circulating on social media, showed the trio offering prayers and seeking blessings after the team’s triumphant campaign.

Temple visit before departure

Before the players dispersed to their respective destinations following the grand victory, several members of the Indian contingent made a spiritual pit stop at a Hanuman temple in Ahmedabad. Videos shared widely on social media platform X showed Suryakumar Yadav, Gautam Gambhir and Jay Shah walking into the temple premises, with the World Cup trophy held aloft for devotees to see.

The captain, who lifted the trophy on Sunday night in front of over 130,000 spectators at the Narendra Modi Stadium, was seen in a composed and grateful mood as he received blessings from the temple priest. Gambhir, the architect of India’s aggressive brand of cricket, stood alongside, his usually intense demeanour replaced by a serene smile.

In one particularly touching video, the temple priest was seen performing a special aarti for the trophy itself, waving the holy flame in front of the silverware as players and officials watched with folded hands. The priest then applied tilak on the foreheads of Suryakumar, Gambhir and Shah, blessing them for their roles in India’s historic achievement.

A video shared by news agency ANI captured the moment when Suryakumar held the trophy close as the priest chanted prayers, the early morning sunlight glinting off the silverware. The captain, known for his 360-degree strokeplay on the field, appeared completely at peace in the spiritual setting.

Speaking at a celebratory midnight press conference, Suryakumar described the achievement as a defining moment for the team but insisted that the focus was already shifting to future challenges.“It has been very special,” he said as celebrations continued across the country. “And definitely the next goal is Olympics, Olympic gold and also the T20 World Cup that year.”Cricket will return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028 — the first time the sport will feature in the Olympics since 1900 — opening a new chapter for international cricket.India’s recent dominance in the shortest format has been built on a fearless, attacking style that began taking shape during the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph under then-captain Rohit Sharma.“I think that drought ended in 2024 after a really long time and from there we never looked back,” Suryakumar said, referring to India’s major title drought following the 2013 Champions Trophy.“We played a different brand of cricket in 2024 and from there we understood how this team needs to work going forward. And it’s been a wonderful journey since then.”Following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from T20 internationals after the 2024 World Cup, Suryakumar took over leadership of the side and has overseen a new era of aggressive cricket.“We wanted to do something special in front of the home crowd,” he said. “We want to continue doing that… and never stop.”
