EXCLUSIVE | 'If I could change my body, I would': Sumit Nagal opens up on injuries and patient rebuilding
India No. 1 Sumit Nagal in action during the ATP Challenger tournament in Pune.

New Delhi: Sumit Nagal had just stepped off the court after playing his first-round match at the ATP Challenger in Delhi. He went past Spain’s David Jorda Sanchis in straight sets and posed for selfies with a handful of kids who had patiently waited for the match to end. Having spent an hour and 28 minutes on the court, Nagal rushed to the locker room to perform his cool-down exercises and emerged looking fresher about an hour later.

As Delhi’s winter chill gave way to the heat in the second week of February, Nagal spoke briefly with his coach Sascha Nensel, while seated near the pool at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) complex. One of the topics, perhaps, would have been how he felt physically on the court. The shots, for the most part, looked good. Nagal struck 14 winners, converted two of three break points and was more accurate than his opponent: 20 unforced errors to Sanchis’s 38. There was a drop in intensity, he admitted, which made him sloppy.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!The 28-year-old ended his 2025 season early and spent 5-6 weeks in the pre-season focusing on multiple things, but being physically fit, under the watchful eye of his fitness trainer Milos Galecic, was pivotal.“If I could change my body, I would do it like this,” he said with a snap of his fingers. “It’s really frustrating. It’s really annoying. It’s been really tough. I don’t know what to say, honestly,” added Nagal, to TimesofIndia.com, with irritation palpable in his words.

Nagal knows the frustration of injuries all too well. He underwent hip surgery in 2021 that kept him out for six months. A back injury saw him withdraw from a Davis Cup tie in 2024. Back niggles continued a year later. Even this year, a hip flexor tear forced him to retire mid-match at the ATP Challenger in Nonthaburi, Thailand.“Thanks for the bumpy ride, 2025,” he wrote on social media after a year of no singles titles and as he slipped from top-100 in rankings to World No. 277.“Getting injured in random tournaments, (to) random balls, no pattern. It’s very frustrating but I’ve also accepted it’s part of it. It is annoying also that it takes out my rhythm. I’m a small guy. I need to play in rhythm. It’s very tough for me to just stand on the court and go boom, boom, boom.“I need to play, play, play. My best years have been when I’ve been injury-free. I think the last 15-17 months have been very unfortunate, with 4-5 different injuries, but I’m trying my best. I am working as much as possible. Right now, there are no ifs, buts or maybe,” he continued.

The ‘best years’ that Nagal refers to are performances like qualifying for the 2024 Australian Open and beating World No. 27 Alexander Bublik. He then clinched the ATP Challenger in Chennai. Then there was a three-setter against Holger Rune in Monte Carlo. Now, not surprisingly, he’s spending a little bit more time on fitness and rehab. The World No. 278 player has changed his diet, is eating less gluten and reminds himself to be patient as the body undergoes a change.Through these injuries, recoveries and continuous struggles, Nagal, who was once World No. 68 in July 2024, has matured.“I think the surgery was where I really matured. The reason was that I watched a lot of tennis in those months. I understood the patterns,” said Nagal.

If you struggle for a while, then it can affect your movements. When I had this hip surgery, I was struggling for a year to play without pain

“Obviously, you also get a little bit older. You get more emotionally stable. Things play out just because you’ve been there for a while. You understand what is what. You have experience now. You are more calm, more mature. So I would say these things are what made the biggest difference,” he continued.“Injuries are very tough to say. If you struggle for a while, then it can affect your movements. When I had this hip surgery, I was struggling for a year to play without pain. “And then when I decided, ‘listen, I cannot really play like this. I need to figure things out’. But also, I lost almost one-and-a-half to two years because so many months you lose on trying to figure things out.

“When the surgery is done, it takes you almost 8-10 months to come back because a joint that is coming out of a surgical clinic, you also have to be patient,” he stressed. The fears for Nagal and his team came back in January. When it was confirmed that it wasn’t bad enough to warrant surgery, the Delhi-born worked overdrive on recovery and rehab alongside Yash Pandey, who has worked extensively with the India No. 1. The expected 5-6 weeks of rehab was shaved to three weeks with ‘no days off.’On the court, the struggles persist. After six tournaments — Australian Open wildcard playoff, Bengaluru Challenger, Nonthaburi Challenger, Chennai Challenger, Delhi Challenger, Pune Challenger — Nagal has not been able to stitch two wins in a row.None hurt more than the loss against Harold Mayot in Bengaluru. The Indian was up 6-2 in the third-set tiebreaker and had the finish line in sight after three hours. He had saved two match points and now had seven match points of his own. One after the other, they kept going away from him. One of the lost opportunities was when Nagal misjudged a ball, expecting it to go long, only to watch it take the line. Many weeks later, he has a pragmatic approach to the season and defeats so far.“I think the Bangalore loss was very unfortunate. It felt really bad for a bit. But then I also realised if I’m in this position 10 times, I’m probably going to win 9 times. So I said, ‘Man, you know, take it, can’t win all. You will have matches like this because I know that I have been on the other side also. And every tennis player goes through this. Sometimes you win from a really bad position and then you [also] lose from a really good position,” said Nagal.Sumit’s favourite part of the season begins now – on clay. He has returned to his place and academy in Germany, and the first tournament is in Zadar, Croatia, with the French Open a possibility. Now, he is focusing on the controllables – the backhand, the serve, the volley.“Other things I can’t really control. And if I can control these things, I will be a better player,” he said with the maturity of someone whose patient game now, unfortunately, matches his off-the-court injuries-induced patience.

Now, BMC cash prize for cleanest socs, rds & mkts | Mumbai News

Mumbai: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, BMC on Tuesday launched a citywide cleanliness competition —Mumbai Clean League— aimed at driving civic participation and improving urban hygiene across Mumbai. The initiative was unveiled at the civic headquarters by actor Akshay Kumar, who will also serve as the competition’s brand ambassador. The league will span multiple categories, recognising the cleanest wards, residential complexes, slum clusters, commercial establishments and public amenities, including hospitals, schools, toilets, roads, gardens and markets. Register for it on sba.mcgm.gov.in/bmc/. The prize money ranges from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 25 lakh, with the highest award reserved for the cleanest ward, signalling a push for large-scale, community-driven engagement. The competition will be evaluated by an independent third-party agency to ensure fairness and credibility, said BMC. The prize distribution ceremony will be held in Dec.So far, similar competitions were largely limited to BMC’s garden department, which annually recognises housing societies for best podium gardens, rooftop terraces, kitchen gardens and vertical bio-walls. The new initiative significantly expands that scope, bringing the entire city into the fold.BMC chief Bhushan Gagrani said the solid waste management department has been implementing various initiatives to improve public places’ upkeep across Mumbai and in this context, Mumbai Clean League aims to ensure cleanliness and enhance citizen participation. Kiran Dighavkar, deputy municipal commissioner in charge of solid waste management, said registrations were opened on Tuesday. “To ensure transparency, real-time evaluation of registered participants will be available online,” he said.Mumbai BJP chief Ameet Satam, who welcomed Kumar at the launch, said the idea stemmed from the party’s outreach campaign. “During my interaction with the actor, he suggested neighbourhood-level cleanliness competitions. We are pleased that the concept has now taken shape as Mumbai Clean League—a name he coined—and that he has come on board as its face.”Following the launch, Shiv Sena’s Amey Ghole flagged alleged protocol violations. In a letter to Gagrani, he objected to the seating arrangement, saying in the mayor’s absence, deputy mayor Sanjay Ghadi from Sena should have been accorded the top protocol status. Ghadi was reportedly assigned the fourth seat, an act Ghole termed “inappropriate and unethical”.

PM speaks to UAE president, slams Iran hits

NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi spoke to the UAE President, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, for the second time since the war started in West Asia on Feb 28 and reiterated India’s strong condemnation of all attacks on the Gulf country, which have resulted in loss of innocent lives and damage to civilian infrastructure. The talks took place amid reports of fresh attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure by Iranian drones. The PM said in an X post the leaders agreed on the importance of ensuring safe and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. “We will continue to work together for the early restoration of peace, security and stability in the region,” he said, while also conveying Eid greetings to the president. India has a critical energy partnership with the UAE which, according to Indian govt, is the fourth-largest source of crude and the second-largest source of LNG and LPG for India.Apart from the safety and security of the Indian diaspora, India’s immediate concern about the conflict is the impact on its LPG supplies through the Strait of Hormuz that is effectively blockaded by Iran. As govt said earlier this week, India has chosen dialogue and diplomacy with Tehran to address its concerns instead of entertaining any thought about joining a US-led military coalition to secure the key waterway. India is currently also engaged with the UAE, a Brics partner, for a consensus in the grouping for a joint statement on the West Asia situation. India, which hold Brics presidency, reiterated Tuesday an agreement remained elusive for now. “Look, we hold the Presidency of Brics. It works on consensus. In this conflict, several members are involved, and it is difficult to bridge the gap in their positions. But we remain engaged with everyone,” said Randhir Jaiswal, the MEA spokesperson.

Court: Victim’s consent for pre-arrest bail is immaterial | Mumbai News

Kalyan: Holding that the victim’s consent to granting anticipatory bail was immaterial since it appeared to have been made under duress, a Kalyan sessions court refused relief to an alleged former aide of gangster Chhota Rajan in a murder attempt case. The applicant, Prashant Laxman Deshmukh, and his associates allegedly attacked a railway contractor two weeks ago with a sharp weapon and a paver block in public. He and his aides have been absconding. Additional sessions judge P P Muley observed that the victim had filed a consent affidavit stating he had no objection to Deshmukh getting anticipatory bail. The judge highlighted the possibility of Deshmukh absconding and influencing witnesses and said that considering all factors, it was “not a fit case for grant of protection”. The defence said Deshmukh was not at the crime spot. It said his criminal record should not be considered as no recent offence had been filed. The prosecution said Deshmukh is the alleged leader of the “PD gang” and that the offence was committed at his behest. The court noted that Deshmukh had engaged in business with the victim, but their ties had soured. It also referred to alleged threats made during phone calls prior to the attack.

Fact check: Did Big Show die? Viral rumor takes over WWE talks as Paul Wight truth feels unexpected (Image via Getty)

Paul Donald Wight II, better known as Big Show, is alive. A viral Facebook post recently claimed that the former WWE star had died, and it spread quickly, leaving many fans confused and worried. But there is no truth to this claim. No news outlet has reported his death, and there is no official confirmation from any reliable source. This is not the first time this has happened. A similar rumor went around years ago, and it turned out to be false as well. Back then, WWE even stepped in to clear things up. Right now, Big Show is simply away from wrestling for health reasons. He is still active in the entertainment world and continues to work outside the ring while focusing on recovery.

Why Paul Donald Wight II, known as Big Show, is trending again and what the truth really is about his health and wrestling break

The latest rumor started on Facebook, where a post falsely claimed that Big Show had passed away. These kinds of posts often spread fast, especially when they involve well-known names. But in this case, there is no real evidence behind it.In fact, Big Show has been open about his health in recent months. In an interview with SiriusXM’s Sam Roberts, he shared that he had undergone back surgery and was still recovering. He explained that he is working with top medical professionals in South Florida to get back into shape. He also made it clear that he is not ready to retire. Speaking honestly, he said, “The last thing I’m gonna do is go out in the ring and have people go, ‘Aw, poor Paul. They should just kill him like Old Yeller or something… If I’m not out there humping and bumping and getting after it and slapping people’s souls out of their chests and carry that presence, then it’s time to hang up the boots. I’m not ready to hang up the boots yet.Right now, Big Show is signed with AEW but is taking a break from in-ring action. His last match took place in 2024. AEW President Tony Khan has been very supportive during his recovery.Even though he is not wrestling, he is still working. He voiced a role in the 2024 animated film No Time to Spy: A Loud House Movie and also appeared in a small role in the sitcom Ghosts.Looking back, a similar false death rumor spread in 2016. At that time, WWE spokesman Chris Bellitti told AP News that the claim was completely fake and confirmed that Big Show was healthy. So, to be clear, Big Show is alive. The viral post is just another hoax.

State repeals 80 obsolete laws, some still linger on | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Maharashtra legislative assembly on Tuesday passed a bill to repeal roughly 80 of 100-odd, outdated laws that remained on the statute book despite constitutional changes, state reorganisation, and enactments of new laws. Laws struck down include The Maharashtra Opium Smoking Act 1936, The Bombay Abolition of Whipping Act, 1957, The Lepers (Bombay Unification) Act, 1959, The Bombay Abkari Act, 1878 and The Borstal Schools Act, 1929. Starting with a law dating back to 1799, there are many in the statute book that were enacted before independence. Under colonial rule, Bombay was a Presidency and the Governor as well as the pan-India Governor General had legislative powers over it. In 1861, the provincial legislature was set up to make laws for Bombay. This legislature, which is the predecessor of the legislative assembly, enacted several laws for the Bombay Presidency. A report by Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy recently found 125 such laws still in force in Maharashtra. The bill was introduced by BJP minister Ashish Shelar who said obsolete laws were being repealed on recommendations of a good governance committee. The panel set up in 2022 comprised former chief secretaries led by Suresh Kumar.Congress MLAs Nana Patole and Nitin Raut opposed the bill saying ‘wholesale’ repealing of laws could affect rights of communities that these laws govern. Raut demanded that the bill be sent to a joint select committee for review. Many laws being repealed are from the former Central Provinces and Berar state, which affect Nagpur and Vidarbha, said Patole.Shelar said, “Laws specifically from periods of 1799 to 1947, and 1947 to 1960 are being repealed. Following the formation of the state in 1960, we enacted our own laws; and under the framework of these laws, all existing rights remain fully intact,” Shelar said. The bill said the state has decided to repeal the Bombay enactments, Bombay Regulations, Bengal Regulations, Central Provinces and Berar Acts, Hyderabad Acts and Madhya Pradesh Acts which are not in use. However, certain obsolete laws dealing with hereditary titles, honours and privileges such as the Baronetcy Acts and the Bombay Hereditary Offices Act of 1874 are yet to be repealed. ‘Baronets’ were awarded by the British Crown to commoners and the Hereditary Offices Act dealt with ‘watandars’ who enjoyed special land rights in Maratha territories.

West Bengal Police Reshuffle: Assembly polls: On Day 3 of reshuffles, EC shakes up West Bengal police | India News

Assembly polls: On Day 3 of reshuffles, EC shakes up West Bengal police

NEW DELHI/KOLKATA: Continuing its administrative and police shake-up in assembly poll-bound states, Election Commission on Tuesday replaced additional directors general (ADGs) of South Bengal and North Bengal regions, four police commissioners, a deputy commissioner and a dozen SPs in West Bengal. In Kerala, it directed the appointment of an IAS officer and two Kerala Administrative Service (KAS) officers as district election officers (DEOs), and two IPS officers as district police chief and DIG.The changes in Bengal, including that of chief secretary, home secretary, DGP and Kolkata Police commissioner earlier, prompted CM and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee to say, “Remember, every officer ultimately belongs to the system. Even after the election is declared, an elected govt continues to remain in place and they will ultimately work for us.”“You have changed everyone. What will happen if a disaster strikes now? Chief secretary, commissioners of police and others who had experience and an understanding of the ground situation have been removed. If there is any breakdown in law and order, then the responsibility will have to be borne by EC,” she told reporters while announcing TMC’s candidate list. EC was operating from the shadows to help BJP, she alleged, saying, “Is there an intention to incite unrest? Is there any plan to trigger something ahead of Eid?”EC has said that it has carried out the transfers in pursuance of its objective to ensure elections free of intimidation, violence and inducements. It said the shunted officers had been barred from poll-related assignments. The poll panel on Tuesday also deployed 1,111 central observers for the assembly polls in Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry as well as bypolls in eight seats. Among them was Bengal’s former home secretary J P Meena, who was replaced by Sanghamitra Ghosh on Sunday.Meena will oversee Tiruchirappalli (West) constituency, which was won by AIADMK in 2011 and in a subsequent bypoll, before DMK secured it in 2016 and 2021, according to an EC note. These central observers include 557 general observers, 188 police observers and 366 expenditure observers. While Bengal will have the highest number of general observers (294) – one for each assembly constituency – and 84 police observers, the highest number of expenditure observers (151) are headed for Tamil Nadu, given its history of circulation of unaccounted cash as poll inducement. The observers must reach their respective constituencies by Wednesday. In Bengal, 17 IPS officers were posted across different police districts and regions. Rajesh Kumar Singh and K Jayaraman – both 1997 batch IPS officers – were posted as ADGs of North Bengal and South Bengal regions, respectively. Similarly, EC ordered that Akhilesh Kumar Chaturvedi be posted as commissioner of police (CP) of Howrah; Amit Kumar Singh as CP of Barrackpore; Pranav Kumar as CP of Asansol-Durgapur, and Sunil Kumar Yadav as CP of Chandannagar. At the district or division level, new SPs were posted in Barasat, Coochbehar, Birbhum, Islampur, Hooghly Rural, Diamond Harbour, Murshidabad, Basirhat, Malda, Purba Medinipur, Jangipur and Pashchim Medinipur.IPS officer Yeilwad Shrikant Jagannathrao was appointed as deputy commissioner, central division, Kolkata, replacing Indira Mukherjee, who had drawn EC’s ire for repeated protests by BLOs and others at the Bengal’s CEO office.TOI had reported on Tuesday that more transfers at the district level in Bengal were in the offing. In Kerala, bureaucratic changes were made in Kozhikode, Thrissur, Alappuzha and Kannur districts. T Narayanan was posted as district police chief, Kozhikode; Thomson Jose as DIG range, Thrissur; Inbasekhar as district collector-cum-DEO, Alappuzha; Vandana S as returning officer, Irikkur; and Sachin Krishna as returning officer, Dharmadam.

State to take back FSI from Global Hospital for withholding beds for poor | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Responding to complaints that the multi-speciality Global Hospital (renamed GlenEagles Hospital in 2023 after it was acquired by Singapore-based IHH Healthcare) had not been allocating 15% beds for the poor in lieu of FSI given by the state, minister Madhuri Misal told the state assembly that the govt would take back the additional FSI granted for its expansion, not allow the hospital to build a proposed new wing and not grant occupation certificates for two new floors.Misal said an inquiry will be conducted by an additional chief secretary into whether any BMC official was responsible for not taking action against the hospital. “The hospital has not been providing the reserved beds. This is a serious matter,” said Misal. The issue was raised in the state assembly by SS (UBT) MLA Ajay Choudhari. He said Global Hospital was supposed to provide 15% beds for the poor to the BMC and charge them according to the rates of BMC hospitals. “They have not provided the beds for the last 15 years and used them for private patients. This is corruption amounting to Rs 150 crore,” alleged Choudhari. In response, Misal, who is minister of state for urban development, said the state had provided the 245-bed hospital with additional 9,357 square metres of FSI on condition that 15% of the beds would be reserved for the BMC for the treatment of poor patients.Misal admitted that the hospital had not been providing the beds but got around penal action by approaching the court. “Providing the BMC beds was a precondition to granting the FSI. The hospital has not been providing the beds. They claim they will give beds at the central govt rate which is much higher than the BMC hospital rate,” Misal told the state assembly. She said the state has denied renovation permissions to the hospital. “However, it went to court and got the permissions,” said Misal. The matter will come up for a court hearing on March 25. Misal said the hospital had not yet used FSI amounting to 4,723 square metres.BJP MLA Yogesh Sagar demanded to know what action should be taken against BMC officials for renewing the hospital’s license each year. Global Hospitals was founded by Hyderabad-based gastroenterologist Dr K Ravindranath in 1999, with the Parel branch established in 2012. In 2015, IHH Healthcare acquired a 73.4% controlling stake in Global Hospitals; in 2023, it acquired the remaining stake to take full ownership of the chain.
