Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Indian cricket deserves clarity over their futures, not hocus-pocus | Cricket News

New Delhi: India head coach Gautam Gambhir has expressed a strong desire to remain through the Los Angeles Olympics. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar wants to stay until the 2027 ODI World Cup. T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has set his sights on 2028 and ODI captain Shubman Gill has locked the ultimate target for South Africa. Every important individual in Indian cricket is focussed on what lies ahead but the biggest irony is that two of the country’s biggest superstars still have to deal with non-committal undertones.Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma – two former ODI captains and arguably the finest cricketers to have played the game – are yet to receive public backing for next year’s showpiece in South Africa. “There is still time left,” “the World Cup is nearly two years away,” “we want to focus on the present.” With time, the statements have changed but the sentiment remains the same.

Ajit Agarkar knocks BCCI door, makes a huge extension request | World Cup

The only reassuring words from the Indian camp came in October 2025 when India’s Test and newly-appointed ODI captain, Gill, supported the two stalwarts. “Absolutely,” Gill said, when asked if he saw Rohit and Kohli playing an important role in ODIs leading into the World Cup. “The experience the two of them have (is immense), and there are very few players who can match the number of matches they have won for India,” he added.Less than a week later, coach Gambhir urged everyone to “stay in the present.”“Look, 50-over World Cup is still two-and-a-half years away, and I think it is very important to stay in the present,” he said in a press conference after India beat West Indies 2-0 in the Test series. “That is very important. Obviously, they are quality players, they are coming back, their experience is going to be a handful in Australia as well. Hopefully, those two guys will have a successful tour, and more importantly, as a team, we will have a successful series.”

Since then, Virat and Rohit have played series against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, and they also squeezed in some List A outings for their respective states in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. While Rohit has lost a lot of weight—”half of him,” according to Brendon McCullum—Virat has gained plenty of intent.Virat, in particular, has switched to beast mode. In his last 10 fifty-over outings, he has hit four hundreds and as many half-centuries. Rohit had quieter showings against New Zealand but he, too, looked menacing in the series against South Africa and Australia. Both right-handers, who have been the backbone of the Indian team for the last two decades, are in the last phase of their careers but continue to fight for survival while chasing the unfinished business from three years ago.India face a packed ODI calendar leading up to next year’s World Cup, and it is imperative that someone from the BCCI calls both Rohit and Virat to discuss their plans. Not the players’ plans, but the board’s plans. The players have their target locked and the onus is now on the Indian cricket board to navigate the situation.

The dagger of insecurity hanging over their heads is not ideal for any Indian dressing room, and it’s not a surprise that the ODI set-up remains the most tense one. There are strong murmurs that some senior players are limiting their conversations with the coach and restricting their chatter with the chief selector to formal pleasantries.

Poll

What should be the main focus of the Indian cricket team in the lead-up to the ODI World Cup?

The head coach asserted during one of his many media appearances since winning the T20 World Cup that planning for the ODI World Cup will begin some time during the IPL but before the blueprint is finalised, dialogue needs to happen. Not just dialogue but clear communication stating whether Virat and Rohit fit into the World Cup plans.

Although it’s quite funny that a conversation of this nature, involving two white ball giants, is even required, the indirect messaging via press conferences and the growing chatter on social media timelines are doing everything but making the dressing room ideal for an event of that proportion. If other one-format cricketers, not on the right side of 30, can look two years ahead; if a chief selector can ask for a shot at unfinished business; and if a head coach can express a desire to continue a year after his official tenure ends, the least Virat and Rohit can expect is clear dialogue. If the men who matter still feel they can have a real shot without the two, and keep the dressing room at its secure best, they must be reading the room with supernatural powers.

KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar reveals Harshit Rana’s replacement ahead of IPL 2026

The TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is just around the corner. As all teams have nearly geared up for the rich cash league. Ahead of the IPL, three-time IPL winners, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), held their first press conference ahead of their opening game against the Mumbai Indians on March 29, at the Wankhede Stadium.

Head coach Abhishek Nayar, Assistant coach Shane Watson, mentor Dwayne Bravo, and captain Ajinkya Rahane were present at the press conference. During the press conference, head coach Abhishek Nayar revealed whether KKR would be picking any replacement for Harshit Rana ahead of the IPL 2026.

KKR head coach provides update on Harshit Rana

Harshit Rana was ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 due to ligament strain in his right knee during India’s T20 World Cup warm-up match against South Africa. He has undergone surgery and was seen using a support while walking during the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Naman Awards.

“Firstly, it’s a big blow because Harshit has been an integral part of this team for the last few seasons. All these years, he has grown into a good cricketer. We’ll always miss Harshit Rana, and it’s not easy to replace him,” Nayar told the media on Friday in Kolkata.

The decision will be made soon- Abhishek Nayar

“Having said that, we have looked at a few bowlers over the past few days. We are trying to evaluate, with the help of our leadership group, who fits in and who can play that role to the best of their abilities. So we are still evaluating that and have yet to make that decision. But hopefully, we can identify who can make a difference,” he added.

Nayar also stated that the KKR pacer is currently at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, and an announcement regarding his replacement is likely to be made within the next couple of days after assessing the bowlers who are on trial at the Eden Gardens and might feature in the first practice match for the side today. He further said, “The decision will be made soon, maybe in a couple of days.”

Harshit Rana’s IPL record for KKR

Harshit Rana has been one of the premier bowlers for the Knights in the last few seasons, especially in the middle and death overs. His slower balls and cutters have been effective. He has been an integral part of the KKR setup, and due to his amazing performances in the IPL, he has been an all-format player for India as well.

Harshit Rana has played 34 games for the Purple and Gold, picking up 40 wickets for the franchise. His best season was back in 2024, when the Knights won their first title as he picked 19 wickets in that IPL edition.

KKR also provided an update on Matheesha Pathirana, who is still rehabbing from the hamstring injury as he is set to join the squad around mid-April. The Knights will be looking for a winning start in their first game.

Retro roots, Gen Z vibes: With free WiFi, games & coffee, India Post flexes for the young | Mumbai News

Inside the IIT-Bombay campus in Powai where he once spent four years, alumnus Rajan Verma is reading a book that does not belong to him. Titled ‘Zero To One’, it was kept in the nearby ‘reading corner’ of the campus post office—a mini library stacked with bestsellers. As he waits for a friend to post a parcel, Verma, now a techie with a leading software firm, scans the room for nostalgia and finds none. A far cry from the cobwebbed cables and creaking cupboards of every post office he’s known, many things about the space are pleasantly unrecognisable. The steel perforated seat he’s sitting on, for instance, has replaced an uninviting wooden bench. Diagonally opposite, the former Aadhaar enrolment cabin now hosts a guitar, beanbags and a slender coffee machine. “Delivery flex”, reads a nearby sign. Another proclaims: “A red letter box is better than red flags”. The wall behind him—flaky and chipped in his student days—carries a freshly painted thought bubble: “Retro roots revamped in Gen Z vibes”. If the puns, tripods and ringlights don’t give it away, a nook inviting visitors to get their photos printed on 12 personalised stamps for Rs 300 seals it. The IIT-B post office—the only ‘Gen Z post office’ in Maharashtra—is part of a nationwide initiative by India Post to reimagine the humble post office for a younger audience. Now called NGen—short for Next Generation— the programme began as ‘Gen Z’ before being renamed to broaden its reach. “We didn’t want to portray it as targeting just one generation,” says an India Post official. “The idea is to connect to the new generation, the next generation—and even those after that.” The push, he says, came directly from Jyotiraditya Scindia, minister of communications, who wanted to shift the perception of postal services. “The general mindset is still ‘purana hai’. Over the years, the youth connect has been lost somewhere. So, the idea was to rebuild it.” Educational campuses proved the most natural starting point. Many large institutes—from IITs to IIMs—already had post offices serving students and faculty. “Students use them for sending parcels or documents, especially when they graduate and send things back home. We wanted to make it a place where students could come, relate to the space and spend time,” says another official. The first to be transformed was the IIT-Delhi campus post office, which was redesigned by students of its fine arts department, whose ideas have shaped the graffiti, interior themes and promotional material. Free Wi-Fi access, dedicated student service counters, parcel packing services and discounted Speed Post document services now make the facility more contemporary and accessible. The results were immediate: when Scindia visited, nearly 80% of the hundred-odd students in the room had already been to their campus post office. Since last Nov, 46 such spaces have opened across the country, with a target of 100 by the end of the financial year. The redesigned post offices feature free WiFi, coffee counters, board games and magazines—something closer to a campus common room than a govt counter. “This is mainly an outreach exercise. The idea is that students come, read books, hang out with friends—and also use the services,” says an official. At Bengaluru’s Acharya Institute of Technology, where students redesigned the campus post office wall by wall, Keerthi Shri, who is in the second semester, says, “Earlier the post office looked very plain. Now, students say it feels like coming to a ‘hi-fi office’.” Kerala leads the way, with three NGen post offices already running. “The number of account openings has gone up since the makeover,” says Rahul IPoS, senior sub-postmaster, Trivandrum north division, who oversees the NGen post office at Government Engineering College. The redesigns have also quietly revived older habits. At IIM-Gandhinagar, sub-postmaster Kruti Mehta has watched the number of students sending parcels home rise steadily since the makeover. “Students prefer post office for sending books and clothes—it’s cheaper, and flights allow only 15kg,” she says. In Bengaluru, students have started writing postcards to their families again. Keerthi has opened a postal savings account. “I’ve deposited Rs 2,000,” she says, happy to join her mother and sister as a post office account holder. In Powai, postwoman Ashwini Shinde—who has been working there for 16 years—says she likes to return to a colourful office. Does she use the guitar room? “I can’t play,” she says. Meanwhile, sub-postmaster Kavita Tawde opens the complaints and suggestions register that is now buzzing with compliments. One entry stands out—from Joginder Singh, who introduces himself as “a resident of the IIT market since 1968”: “Today, it was great to see my post office clean and bright. I wish to see it always this way.”

Sweeping transfers by EC take place only in non-BJP states: Omar Abdullah

Omar Abdullah (File photo)

NEW DELHI: J&K CM Omar Abdullah on Friday came out strongly in support of his Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee on the issue of EC transferring officials in poll-bound Bengal, saying these “sweeping transfers only happen in non-BJP-governed states”.“Bengal will once again prove that officers don’t win elections for political parties; members of political parties do,” he said, reacting to Mamata’s post on X in which she alleged that the manner in which EC has “singled out and targeted Bengal is not just unprecedented but deeply alarming”.Omar said, “No amount of effort by EC to gerrymander will change the results. Come counting day, Mamata will win a thumping majority.”Highlighting that parties have come forward to support Mamata, TMC shared a video clip of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav saying, “I want to congratulate Mamata in advance and say the people of Bengal will vote in her favour.” He said that the ‘conspiracy’ led by BJP to defeat her, including the recent transfer of officials, will not work. AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal had also posted, “BJP has turned EC into its weapon to win elections through deceit. What is happening today in Bengal is exactly what happened in the Delhi elections.” Sena UBT’s Sanjay Raut said on X “defeating Mamata didi in Bengal is not just difficult, it’s impossible! That’s why BJP is playing dirty by hiding behind the shield of EC”.

EC constitutes 19 appellate tribunals to hear SIR cases | India News

EC constitutes 19 appellate tribunals to hear SIR cases

NEW DELHI: Election Commission, acting on directions of Supreme Court and recommendations of Calcutta HC chief justice, on Friday constituted 19 appellate tribunals for hearing appeals against orders passed by designated judicial officers in Bengal in respect of inclusion or exclusion of prospective electors in the state’s electoral roll.Consequent upon the publication of the supplementary electoral roll – after adjudication of ‘doubtful’ cases under SIR by judicial officers – an appellant may file appeals against the orders passed by the designated judicial officers, said EC in a notification issued on Friday. The tribunals, which will hear appeals as per districts or a set of districts, will be headed by former judges, including ex-HC chief justice T S Sivagnanam, who will preside over the appellate tribunal for 24 Parganas North (assembly constituency-wise) and Kolkata districts. The tribunals, likely to be operational by Monday, will be in existence till all appeals are disposed of. Given that the electoral roll is frozen on the last day of nomination, the supplementary lists should be out at the latest by a day prior to the issue of poll notification, giving a week to the tribunals to hear appeals. In case the appeals are decided by the last day of nomination – April 6 for phase 1 and April 9 for phase 2 – those approved for inclusion in the rolls by the tribunals shall be able to vote in the upcoming elections. For those who don’t pass the tribunal test or don’t have their appeals heard before this deadline, the implications are much more than just not being able to vote. If the tribunals rule them as ineligible to be in the roll – essentially for being non-citizens – they will have to be confined to detention centres and deported to their country of origin.Sources in the commission said the tribunals needed to be set up before the supplementary lists were published to offer clarity to those included or excluded from the supplementary list on how and where to file an appeal. As per the EC notification, the appeal may be filed online through the ECINet platform or physically at the office of the DMdistrict magistrate, SDM or SDO concerned. While one tribunal each has been constituted for Purba Medinipur, Coochbehar, Purba Bardhaman, Nadia, Howrah, Dakshin Dinajpur, 24 Parganas South, Hooghly, Paschim Bardhaman, Uttar Dinajpur, Birbhum and Malda districts; four tribunals will hear appeals for two sets of districts; the combination being 24 Parganas (AC wise) and Kolkata; Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar; Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram; and Purulia and Bankura.

Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation’s diesel tender secures higher discount, says chairman Pratap Sarnaik | Mumbai News

Mumbai: MSRTC chairman Pratap Sarnaik on Friday told media that a transparent and competitive tender process, conducted without allowing any interference, has helped the bus corporation secure a diesel discount at Rs 5.13 per litre, compared with the earlier Rs 3.He said the additional saving of Rs 2.13 per litre was expected to reduce MSRTC’s annual fuel expenditure by about Rs 240 crore. With the new tender, there will be a significant shift in how MSRTC bought diesel. Until now, the corporation procured fuel largely on a nomination basis from public sector oil marketing companies, without a competitive bidding process, and got a discount of Rs 3 per litre.Sarnaik added that the corporation, burdened with accumulated losses of around Rs 12,000 crore, could not rely only on ticket revenue when daily expenditure exceeded income by Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore. The savings in fuel will help curtail losses. “A major breakthrough has come in diesel procurement through this tender. The MSRTC currently consumes around 10.87 lakh litres of diesel every day and purchases nearly 40 crore litres annually, with yearly spending of about Rs 3,400 crore,” he said.At the media conference on Friday, Sarnaik said that to diversify revenue, MSRTC is entering commercial fuel retailing through multi-modal fuel stations at 100 to 110 locations under the public-private partnership model. These outlets will offer diesel, petrol, CNG, LNG and, in the future, EV charging. The initiative is expected to generate around Rs 100 crore annually, with one such project already operational in Dhule. The corporation is also introducing AI-based sensors on fuel tanks and nozzles to curb leakage and irregularities in fuel filling.Till the end of February in the current financial year, MSRTC had already incurred losses of nearly Rs 750 crore.Sarnaik said the corporation began implementing a multi-pronged strategy to create sustainable alternative income streams while tightening expenditure. Advertisement revenue is another key focus area for earning Rs 250 crore over five years.Solar rooftop and solar farming projects are also being rolled out by MSRTC to save energy and generate additional annual income of Rs 10 crore to Rs 15 crore. MSRTC has set a target of earning at least Rs 500 crore in additional income next year through these and other reforms, he added.MSRTC operates over 16,700 buses across 252 depots statewide, with 8,000 new diesel buses expected to join the fleet this year.

Fatal fall from train: HC orders CR to pay kin 8L | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court directed Central Railway to pay compensation of up to Rs 8 lakh to the parents of Suvidh Raut, who died after falling from a moving train between Ulhasnagar and Ambernath station, providing relief after 14 years.Justice Jitendra Jain on Monday did not accept the Railway Claims Tribunal’s finding that Raut’s death was due to trespass. “The tribunal is not an expert to give an opinion based on the nature of the injury that a person may have been knocked down by a moving train while crossing the track. It is for the medical expert and for the eyewitness to do so. In this case, both are not present,” he said.On March 22, 2019, the tribunal rejected the parents’ claim. It held that their son was not a bona fide passenger and his March 29, 2012 death did not occur due to an ‘untoward incident’ as defined under the Railways Act. The definition includes accidental falling from a train.Justice Jain first considered whether Raut was a bona fide passenger with a valid ticket. While the inquest panchnama did not mention that his ticket was found, a co-passenger, Sandip Valvi, who stayed nearby, stated that Raut purchased two tickets as they were travelling together. He said due to the heavy rush, Raut fell from the train. Justice Jain said Raut’s ticket might have been lost due to the fall and subsequent transportation of his body to the hospital. “Since the co-passenger confirmed purchase of tickets,” he followed a Supreme Court decision and said the tribunal’s finding that Raut was not a bona fide passenger cannot be accepted. On the issue of ‘untoward incident’, Justice Jain noted that at the site, there was no eyewitness nor any CR office. Therefore, the station master’s report, the railway police report and the inquest panchnama stating that Raut was knocked down while crossing the tracks “cannot be accepted in the absence of any eye witness.” It cannot be said Raut “died on account of crossing the tracks, ” he added. Allowing the parents’ appeal, he directed the CR to pay them Rs 4 lakh with 6% interest from the date of the accident till payment, subject to a cap of Rs 8 lakh.
