'3 ducks ke baad ... bat de de': Abhishek Sharma's message to Shubman Gill
Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill (BCCI Photo)

NEW DELHI: Abhishek Sharma endured a difficult start to the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, registering three ducks in a row — a phase that left him in a poor state of mind. Looking back, he admitted that he reached out to his childhood friend Shubman Gill during that tough period. At the BCCI Naman Awards, the two shared a candid exchange.Gill was asked if he had offered Abhishek any advice before the tournament. With a smile, he replied, “No.1 T20I batsman in the world ko kaun advice dega” (Who is going to give advice to the world’s No. 1 T20I batter?), drawing laughter while also backing his teammate.

But Abhishek was quick to flip the narrative, bringing up his lean run before anyone else could.“Maine hi message kiya tha isko 3 duck ke baad ke mujhe bat de de, isse pehle koi aur record bann jae” (I was the one who messaged him after three ducks and told him to give me his bat, otherwise some other unwanted record would have been made), Abhishek said, laughing at his own struggles.“Usne bola tha, tu kar lega” (He told me, you’ll manage it). When asked whose bat he liked the most, Abhishek didn’t hesitate.“Shubman ka hi” (Shubman’s, of course), he said.Gill, in turn, added another layer to their camaraderie with a playful remark: “Woh mere bat se hi khelta hai hamesha” (He plays with my bat all the time anyway).Abhishek bounced back in style, scoring a blistering 52 off just 21 balls in the T20 World Cup final and giving India a solid start with a 98-run opening stand alongside Sanju Samson.India went on to crush New Zealand by 96 runs to clinch the title — their third T20 World Cup triumph after victories in 2007 and 2024.

Petrol and diesel price today: Premium petrol price hiked; how much fuel costs in your city today? Check list

Petrol and diesel price today: Premium petrol price hiked; how much fuel costs in your city today? Check list

As the Middle East conflict continues to boil and oil continues to soar, consumers are growing concerned about the cost of petrol and diesel. State-run oil marketing companies have raised prices of premium petrol variants by more than Rs 2 per litre, while keeping retail rates of regular petrol and diesel unchanged. The hike affects high-performance fuels such as BPCL’s Speed, HPCL’s Power and IOCL’s XP95, with increases ranging between Rs 2.09 and Rs 2.35 per litre. Despite the revision in these premium offerings, there has been no change in the price of regular petrol, according to ANI.At the same time, industrial consumers are facing a steep rise in diesel costs. The price of bulk diesel was increased by around Rs 22 per litre on Friday, mirroring the surge in global crude oil prices amid the ongoing Middle East conflict. In the national capital, the price of bulk diesel has been revised upwards from Rs 87.67 per litre to Rs 109.59 per litre.

Premium Petrol Prices Hiked By Up To ₹2.35 Per Litre In India Amid West Asia Conflict

In contrast, retail fuel prices remain steady, with normal diesel still priced at Rs 87.67 per litre and petrol at Rs 94.77 per litre. At a media briefing, Sujata Sharma, joint secretary, ministry of petroleum and natural gas, assured that there is no increase in prices of normal petrol and diesel. Here’s how much petrol and diesel cost in your city today:

City Petrol (Rs/litre) Diesel (Rs/litre)
New Delhi 94.77 87.67
Mumbai 103.54 90.03
Kolkata 105.45 92.02
Chennai 100.84 92.3
Jaipur 104.72 90.21
Bengaluru 102.96 90.99
Ahmedabad 94.49 90.17

The divergence between stable retail fuel prices and rising industrial fuel costs comes as global oil markets remain volatile. Crude prices climbed to $119 per barrel on Thursday amid the intensifying Iran war, before easing to around $108 per barrel. The ongoing Iran conflict has significantly disrupted global energy dynamics, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a key transit route for nearly 20% of global energy supplies. Heightened attacks on energy infrastructure by both sides, Iran and Israel-US, along with concerns over shipping disruptions, have pushed crude prices above $100 per barrel, with peaks nearing $120.India’s dependence on imported crude makes it particularly vulnerable to such disruptions. The country sources about 85–90% of its crude oil from overseas, with roughly 40–50% passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Any disturbance in this route raises freight and insurance costs, increases the overall import bill and heightens the risk of supply constraints.Analysts caution that even a $10 increase in crude oil prices can significantly expand India’s import bill and fuel inflationary pressures. The effects are already visible, with pressure on the rupee, foreign investor outflows, and growing concerns over rising fuel and LPG costs.

Three-time IPL champions KKR will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Mumbai Indians on March 29 at the Wankhede Stadium. With multiple opening options and a revamped squad, Nayar admitted that finalising the right combinations remains KKR’s biggest challenge ahead of the season.Having overhauled their squad after a disappointing 2025 campaign, KKR have added big names such as Cameron Green, Finn Allen, Tim Seifert and Rachin Ravindra, but are yet to lock in their batting order.“I’m terrible at predicting what can go wrong, but I can just tell you, I don’t know how the tournament will pan out, but I think initially, it’s making sure we get a fit playing XI come (March) 29th,” Nayar said during the team’s first media interaction of the season.KKR, who finished eighth last year with just five wins, are also set to field a new opening combination in the absence of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Quinton de Kock. The explosive New Zealand duo of Allen and Seifert — who recently put together a record 117-run stand at Eden Gardens to eliminate South Africa in a T20 World Cup semifinal — are among the frontrunners. With Sunil Narine, who also opens, a certainty in the XI, choosing the remaining three overseas players from a pool that includes Green, Allen, Seifert, Ravindra and potentially Matheesha Pathirana presents another selection dilemma.“I think that is a priority right now, making sure we get our combinations right. Because I always believe when you have new combinations in this IPL, it’s about making sure you get your team peaking, yes, everyone in form, but positioning them well enough for them to succeed.“So I think that as a group will be our first challenge and the rest we’ll see as it comes,” Nayar said.KKR’s middle-order struggles last season — where positions 4 to 8 failed to deliver consistently — remain a concern. However, Nayar emphasised that past performances will have little bearing on the upcoming campaign. He cited Sanju Samson as an example, pointing to how the wicketkeeper-batter overcame poor form before the T20 World Cup and went on to play crucial knocks in India’s title-winning run.“We saw that with Sanju Samson in the World Cup as well. It’s about being there at that moment in this tournament. So we’re very hopeful that our players can start strong.“And if you’re in good form, it doesn’t matter what your name is in this format of the game. I think form counts a lot more than what’s happened in the past,” he added.“I’ve always believed T20 cricket is a game of momentum. It’s a game of form. So what happened a year ago doesn’t really matter as to what’s going to happen.“I think something that is going to be really important is the kind of form our boys hit this season. And if everyone is at the peak of their prowess, you expect this team to do really well like they did a year before last. So I honestly believe that it’s not so much of what happened in the past,” he said.

IPL 2026: Former CSK batter reveals the biggest ‘weakness’ of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 just days away from its much-anticipated start on March 28, excitement among fans has reached a fever pitch. The tournament promises high-octane clashes, fresh rivalries, and new narratives as franchises gear up for another intense season. Among the teams drawing significant attention is Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), a side looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2025 campaign.

KKR, one of the most successful teams in IPL history with three titles, will kick off their season against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. However, despite the buzz surrounding their revamped squad, questions have begun to surface regarding the team’s balance and leadership heading into the new season.

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter S Badrinath has stirred debate by openly criticising KKR’s leadership structure. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Badrinath described captain Ajinkya Rahane as a ‘weak link’ in the setup, raising concerns about both his captaincy and overall influence on the team.

“Ajinkya Rahane is definitely a weakness. His captaincy itself is a weak link,” said Badrinath.

Badrinath did not hold back in his assessment, suggesting that KKR’s management decisions have not worked in their favour. He highlighted that several high-value investments have either failed to deliver or been impacted by injuries.

According to him, the franchise’s faith in certain players has backfired. Promising pacer Harshit Rana has already been ruled out, while Sri Lankan speedster Matheesha Pathirana remains doubtful due to fitness concerns. Additionally, Bangladesh left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman is unavailable, further weakening KKR’s bowling depth.

“All their big investments have gone wrong. They trusted Harshit Rana and invested in him, but he is ruled out. Pathirana was a huge signing, and now he’s doubtful. Mustafizur was another big investment, and he is ruled out. They’ve taken many costly decisions as there is uncertainty over most of their big investments,” added Badrinath.

Can KKR script a turnaround and chase a fourth title?

Despite the criticism, KKR enter IPL 2026 with a sense of renewed purpose. After finishing eighth last season, the franchise has reshaped parts of its squad while maintaining continuity in leadership. The management has backed Rahane to lead the side, signaling trust in his experience and calm approach.

The squad, on paper, still looks competitive with a mix of experienced players and exciting young talent. If key players step up and injuries don’t derail their campaign further, KKR have the potential to challenge stronger teams. Their batting unit, in particular, has the firepower to turn games around, while their bowling—though currently stretched—could regain strength if reinforcements step in effectively.

Eid Politics Heats Up Bengal: Mamata Banerjee Attacks BJP, Suvendu Adhikari Pushes Sanatan Narrative

NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the BJP during an Eid-ul-Fitr event in Kolkata. She said she stands with people of all castes, communities, and creeds, while accusing the saffron party of attempting to curtail citizens’ rights through SIR.Speaking after Eid prayers at Red Road, Banerjee alleged that SIR is part of a larger effort to influence the electoral process in West Bengal. She claimed that names of voters had been deleted under the exercise and said she had taken the matter from Kolkata to Delhi, approaching both the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court. “I hope that people’s rights are safeguarded,” she added.

Eid Politics Heats Up Bengal: Mamata Banerjee Attacks BJP, Suvendu Adhikari Pushes Sanatan Narrative

“Those who are targeting Bengal and trying to divide people should go to hell,” the West Bengal CM said, as quoted by news agency PTI.Her remarks come amid a growing political row over the electoral roll scrutiny exercise, which the TMC has repeatedly called an attempt to remove names of genuine voters, especially from minority-dominated areas, ahead of the assembly elections. The chief minister referred to Bengal’s long-standing tradition of communal harmony, saying the state would not allow attempts to divide society to succeed.“Bengal believes in unity. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, everyone lives together here. We will not allow anyone to break this social fabric,” Mamta said.“I stand with everyone in Bengal, with all castes, communities, and creeds. I will continue this fight. We will not let Modi ji snatch away our rights,” she added.Mamta also accused the Centre of trying to control the state government. “You are trying to forcibly control our government, you want to impose President’s rule. She added that she won’t be scared: “Jo darte hain, wo marte hain (those who are afraid are finished). Jo ladte hain, wo zindagi mein kamyab hote hain (those who fight succeed in life).” Elections for the 294-member West Bengal Assembly will be held in two phases on April 23 and 29, with counting scheduled for May 4.On Friday, TMC also approached the Calcutta High Court, challenging the transfer of several IAS and IPS officers in West Bengal by the Election Commission of India after the announcement of assembly polls.

India’s crude shuffle: How Iran’s Hormuz chokehold rerouted oil imports from Gulf to Russia

India's crude shuffle: How Iran's Hormuz chokehold rerouted oil imports from Gulf to Russia

Iran’s Hormuz chokehold has reshaped India’s oil purchase pattern, with a sharp drop in Gulf supplies this month pushing refiners towards Russia and smaller producers to keep supplies steady. So far in March, crude imports into the country are down 23% compared to February, according to shipping data and analyst estimates cited by ET. The plunge comes as inflows from the Middle East have contracted significantly, with disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz adding to supply concerns. If the crisis continues, total imports for the month could decline by about a fifth sequentially.

India Warns Against Attacks On Commercial Ships Amid Hormuz Crisis, Calls For Peace And Dialogue

Figures from Vortexa show India brought in 81 million barrels of crude between March 1 and 18, compared with 105 million barrels during the same period last month. The steepest fall has been in Middle Eastern supplies, which dropped to 22.4 million barrels from 59.9 million barrels earlier, Xavier Tang, senior market analyst at the firm told financial daily. With the Iran war intensifying and energy routes under strain, refiners have moved quickly to plug the gap. Purchases from Russia have nearly doubled, making it the largest supplier with 34.3 million barrels, around 44% of India’s total imports in the first half of the month, according to Kpler data.At the same time, cargoes from African nations have increased sharply. Angola shipped 7.5 million barrels during the period, a significant jump from 2.9 million barrels in all of February. Congo, Gabon and Sudan, not regular suppliers to India, added 1.9 million barrels, 1.7 million barrels and 700,000 barrels respectively.Flows from the United States have also softened, with about 3 million barrels arriving so far in March, nearly half of what was seen last month. From the Gulf, India has so far imported 7.9 million barrels from Saudi Arabia, 6.8 million barrels from Iraq and 1.9 million barrels from the UAE. However, Saudi shipments are expected to rise in the coming weeks. “We are seeing approximately 15-16 million barrels of crude loading from Saudi Arabia’s west coast to India this month,” said Nikhil Dubey, senior refining analyst at Kpler. “Of this, around 9 million barrels are already enroute and are expected to arrive within the next 6-7 days,” he said, adding that some deliveries may extend into April due to longer voyage times.Analysts caution that if disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz continue through March, overall imports could fall to between 115 million and 125 million barrels, below the usual monthly range of around 150 million barrels.Amid the tight supply scenario, there are indications that Iranian oil could re-enter the market. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said Washington may allow crude already at sea to be sold, potentially opening the door for buyers such as India. Before sanctions halted the trade, Iranian oil accounted for roughly 10% of India’s crude inflows, with most of those volumes now heading to China.

Recalling his first interaction with Pandya, Jaffer went back to the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy season, when Mumbai faced Baroda and Pandya was still an emerging talent.Speaking on his Instagram profile, Jaffer said: “The first time I met him was during the 2014 or 2015 Ranji season. Mumbai were playing Baroda in Baroda. Irfan (Pathan), Yusuf (Pathan), and Munaf (Patel) were playing in the opposition team. I was not playing that match because I was injured, but I traveled with the team.”“I remember that we went to Irfan’s house for dinner, and that is when I met Hardik and Krunal for the first time,” said Jaffer. “Irfan told me, ‘Meet Hardik, he is going to play very soon.’ And I think he was picked by the Mumbai Indians that season itself.”At the time, Pandya was just beginning to make a name for himself, but his admiration for Jaffer was already evident.“Irfan told me that he is a big fan of mine. Hardik himself said, ‘Main aapki batting bahut dekhta hoon aur mujhe bahut apka khelne ka andaz pasand hai (I watch your batting a lot and I really like the way you play).’”“It’s very nice of him that he still takes my name in front of big stars. And that is why there has been so much news about who Wasim Jaffer is,” reflected Jaffer. “People keep hearing other names very often, but they might not remember Wasim Jaffer because I made a name for myself in First-Class cricket.”
