‘Our existence erased’: Mumbai’s queer communities oppose Transgender Persons Amendment Bill, 2026 | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Queer communities and allies across Mumbai gathered at Azad Maidan on Wednesday afternoon to oppose the Transgender Persons Amendment Bill, calling it a retrogressive step. Both Houses of Parliament have passed the bill. According to Yadnya, a transgender woman, the bill “erases” their existence as it has narrowed down the definition of transgender. As per the amendment to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, now a person such as kinner, hijra, aravani, or jogta, and a person with variations at birth in sexual characteristics will be considered as transgender. The amended bill removes self-perceived identities and penalises those who force someone to present as a transgender person with imprisonment between five and 10 years.Advocate Lara Jesani said, “The bill is trying to deter people from their trans identity by bringing in criminal provisions. It appears deterring is more important than criminalising violence against the trans community.” Meghna, a 53-year-old mother of two self-identified transgender, and non-binary kids, said it’s a regressive bill. “As a parent, I am an ally to my children. If the bill comes into force, who knows, one day, they might arrest me for supporting my children. This is the worst part of the amendment.”Health professionals also spoke against the bill and pointed out the difference between sex and gender. Psychiatrist Dr Armaan Pandey said being transgender is the experience of a person whose assigned sex does not match their perceived gender, and therefore, it is not quantifiable. Arijit, who is a 37-year-old transgender man and a mental health professional, said it took him years to come out, and now, according to the amendment, “we do not exist anymore”. Stating that the bill’s provisions could adversely affect transgender people’s mental health, Arijit said, “Studies have shown that gender-affirming care reduces suicides and improves the basic quality of life.”For the queer community, it becomes a question of survival. “Now, if I don’t exist, and the police do not protect me, and I do not have any rights, what happens? What should I do?” asked Arjit.

India not ‘go-between country’ like Pakistan: S Jaishankar at all-party meet amid Iran mediation buzz | India News

NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday told leaders at the all-party meeting that India is not a ‘go-between country’ like Pakistan, amid growing reports of mediation efforts in the ongoing Iran conflict, according to reportsThe remarks came as multiple countries, including Pakistan, Turkey have stepped up efforts to act as intermediaries between Washington and Tehran to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East. There is nothing new in Pakistan’s mediation efforts in the matter as that country has been “used” by the US since 1981, PTI sources quoted S Jaishankar as saying. The sources added that the government refuted the Opposition’s charge that New Delhi was silent on the situation, asserting that “we are commenting and responding”.When the Iran embassy was opened, the foreign secretary visited immediately and signed the condolence book, the government told the parties in response to the Opposition’s charge that India displayed moral weakness in not condoling the death of the Iranian Supreme Leader sooner. The government is also said to have informed the parties that its prime concern is ensuring the security of the Indian diaspora living in the Gulf region and fulfilling domestic energy needs. On that count, the government said it has been successful so far. The Opposition, however, said the answers provided at the meeting by the government were “unsatisfactory” and demanded that a debate be held on the West Asia situation in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.Lashing out at the government, Congress’s Tariq Anwar said Pakistan is performing the mediator’s role while “we are still mute spectators”.He said there should be a debate on the situation in Lok Sabha under rule 193 and in Rajya Sabha under rule 176.All Union ministers part of the Cabinet Committee on Security — Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman — represented the government.Union health minister JP Nadda and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also attended. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri made a presentation before the gathering.Tariq Anwar and Mukul Wasnik of the Congress, Dharmendra Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, Sasmit Patra of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Sanjay Jha of JD-U, Srikant Shinde of Shiv Sena, Sanjay Singh of Aam Aadmi Party, John Brittas of CPI-M, Supriya Sule of NCP (SP), Arvind Sawant of Shiv Sena (UBT), Asaduddin Owaisi of AIMIM were among the Opposition leaders who attended the meeting, which lasted for nearly two hours. The sources said the government conveyed that there is no need for panic as India has enough stock with more crude oil and gas coming.“We have already done advance order. Diversification of sources of oil and gas has been undertaken and now we are procuring from 41 countries,” the government told the meeting. It is a diplomatic success that four India-bound ships, carrying petroleum products, have already crossed the Strait of Hormuz while five more are expected to cross soon. There are 18 India-bound ships which are stranded around the Strait of Hormuz, the participants were told.On the US attack and sinking of an Iranian ship, the government said that had it been in Indian waters it would have been saved but unfortunately the ship was near Sri Lankan waters.“There is a sense of gratitude on the part of Iran as we have protected other ships and sailors,” the government told the meeting.“We are good friends with everyone – the US is our largest trading partner, Israel is our largest technological partner and we have good relations with Iran too,” it said. The opening remarks were made by Defence Minister Singh with Jaishankar and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also speaking during the meeting.During the question answer session, it was mostly Jaishankar who replied to the opposition’s queries and concerns. On a few occasions, Home Minister Shah also intervened.Briefing reporters on the meeting, Rijiju said the meeting was convened because Prime Minister Narendra Modi wanted it and information was shared about the crisis in West Asia.“Several questions were raised by opposition friends regarding the situation arising from the conflict in West Asia involving Iran, Israel, and the United States – specifically about how it would impact India and what steps the government has taken for Indian citizens,” he said.On behalf of the government, comprehensive and detailed responses were provided, Rijiju said.“I feel satisfied to inform you that all the questions asked by the opposition and the information they sought were fully addressed by the government,” he asserted. In the end, all opposition members stated that in this time of crisis, whatever decisions the government takes and whatever steps are required based on the situation, they will stand united and support them, he said.Speaking with reporters, Anwar said an attempt was made to seek clarification from the government, but the meeting was “unsatisfactory”.“It has been our longstanding demand that this issue be debated in both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha under Rules 193 and 176. Only then will people feel satisfied… The government says it (we do not want war), but what difference does merely saying that make? The reality is that a conflict is already underway. Pakistan, which is smaller than us and weaker in every respect, is today acting as a mediator and playing that role, while we remain mute spectators,” the Congress leader said.Brittas said the government has been assuring the opposition that everything is safe.“The opposition parties expressed their disapproval of the government’s silence. All the opposition leaders who spoke said that the government should have taken a position with regard to the unilateral attack against a sovereign independent country Iran by the United States. And there have been questions raised with regard to the visit of our Prime Minister to Tel Aviv, and also there were certain questions about the proactive role of Pakistan,” Brittas said.On the absence of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and TMC members from all-party meet on West Asia situation, Union minister Pralhad Joshi said it was a “highly irresponsible” behaviour.“The statements that Rahul Gandhi is making raise serious questions about whether he is genuinely interested in India’s interests or in spreading rumours within the country. This has created significant doubt in people’s minds. Today, in a way, he has even appeared to appreciate Pakistan. At a time when Pakistan is making statements against India, he seems to be lending credibility to them. He should first clarify whether he stands with India or with Pakistan,” he said.

Iran claims to have ‘successfully targeted’ American F-18 fighter jet, shares video

Iran claims to have 'successfully targeted' American F-18 fighter jet, shares video
Video shared by Iran’s press TV

Iran on Wednesday claimed that it shot down as US fighter jet amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Iran’s state affiliated media Press TV shared a footage on X showing the apparent crash. In the clip, a jet (that Iran claims is US F-18) was ‘successfully’ shot down. “Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announces that it has successfully targeted an American F-18 fighter jet,” said the Iranian media, while sharing the video. This comes just hours after Iran rejected a US proposal on “ceasefire” and warned that strikes will continue till their own demands are met. Iran has dismissed a US 15-point proposal, saying any ceasefire will happen only on its “own terms and timeline,” a senior official told Press TV. “Iran says it will end the war when it decides it should, not when Trump envisions its conclusion,” the official added.

Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari warned, “Don’t dress up your defeat as an agreement. WATCH: Nick Kelly pulls off a jaw-dropping one-handed diving catch to dismiss Rubin Hermann in NZ vs SA 5th T20I

Some moments in cricket do not need a scoreboard to matter. Nick Kelly just made one of them. The New Zealand all-rounder was stationed at mid-off during the 5th T20I against South Africa when the game handed him an opportunity that most fielders would have let go. South African batter Rubin Hermann, looking to stay hot on 39 off 31 balls with 4 fours and 1 six, drove the ball hard and low toward the boundary, only for it to be plucked spectacularly by Kelly at mid-off.

Nick Kelly takes a screamer to remove Rubin Hermann

Kelly burst forward, read the ball early, and launched himself into a full-length dive, left hand outstretched, body parallel to the turf. He plucked it inches off the turf with his left hand and held on. The Christchurch crowd erupted. The commentary box lost its composure entirely. “Oh you beauty! Nick Kelly!” Pretty much summed it up.

Replays told the full story. The ball was sharp, low, and travelling fast. The ground covered was considerable. The margin for error was almost zero. Kelly made it look instinctive, which is exactly what made it so jaw-dropping, because nothing about that catch was simple.

It arrived at a crucial stage in the series decider. South Africa won the 5th T20I to clinch the series, but if there is one image that will outlast the final result, it is Kelly horizontal in the air, arm fully extended, ball firmly in hand.

Kelly has been a reliable part of New Zealand’s white-ball setup and also captains his local association side. But this was not about reputation or rank. This was about reflexes, commitment, and the kind of athletic brilliance that reminds everyone why T20 fielding is a genuine game-changer because in a format where every run counts, one moment like this can swing momentum entirely.

Nirav Modi Extradition: Big setback for Nirav Modi as UK high court rejects reopening extradition plea | India News

Big setback for Nirav Modi as UK high court rejects reopening extradition plea

Nirav Modi’s petition to reopen proceedings against his extradition to India was rejected on Wednesday by the High Court of Justice, King’s Bench Division, in London, which ruled that the application did not meet the threshold of “exceptional circumstances” required to revisit the case. The court held that the grounds presented, including reliance on the Bhandari judgment, were insufficient to justify reopening the proceedings. The decision marks a significant setback for the fugitive diamantaire, who is wanted in India in connection with the Punjab National Bank fraud case. The Crown Prosecution Service strongly opposed the application during the hearing, supported by a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team that travelled to London, including key investigating officers. The high court noted in its judgment that the circumstances cited in the petition were not compelling enough to warrant reconsideration of the earlier extradition order, effectively closing this legal avenue for Modi.

What was the case?

Nirav Modi has been fighting extradition to India over alleged involvement in the Rs 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud, one of the country’s largest banking scams. He has previously exhausted multiple legal remedies in UK courts, including appeals against extradition orders and applications citing concerns over prison conditions and mental health. The latest attempt to reopen proceedings was based on the Bhandari judgment, which Modi’s legal team argued had a bearing on his case. However, UK courts have consistently ruled in favour of extradition, finding that the evidence against him establishes a prima facie case and that his rights would not be violated if he were returned to India.More updates to follow

Tiger Woods made his return to competitive golf after more than a year, and this time, it was not just about the game. Just before he stepped onto the course, Vanessa Trump stood beside him, showing her support in a very personal way. The two shared a quick kiss and hug, a moment that caught attention right away. It happened on Tuesday, March 24, at the TGL finals in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. This was a big moment for Woods. The 50-year-old golfer had been away from full competition since April 2024 due to injuries. So when he finally returned, people were already watching closely. And with Vanessa Trump there, along with her daughter Kai Trump, the moment felt even more special.Vanessa, who was earlier married to Donald Trump Jr., has been quietly dating Woods for the past few months. Now, their bond is becoming more public, and this appearance made that clear.

Tiger Woods returns at TGL finals as Vanessa Trump and Kai Trump cheer from stands during comeback match

Tiger Woods played for Jupiter Links in the TGL finals, facing Los Angeles Golf Club in a best-of-three series. Just before he teed off at the SoFi Center, Vanessa Trump walked up to him, hugged him, and gave him a kiss. It was simple, but it showed strong support before a big match.During the game, Vanessa and her 18-year-old daughter Kai Trump stayed in the stands, clapping and cheering. Kai, who is also a junior golfer and committed to the University of Miami, followed the match closely. Even though Woods’ team lost 9-2 to Los Angeles Golf Club, the focus stayed on his return and the support around him.Woods had not played four full rounds since The Masters in April 2024. He has been dealing with recovery since then. Speaking earlier, he shared how tough the process has been. He said, “I said I’ve been working on it. Sometimes I have good days, sometimes I have bad days. Disc replacement is not a lot of fun.”In another update earlier this year, he told ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt, “I’ve been cleared to hit, basically, hit short irons and mid irons. I haven’t gone any beyond that.” He also admitted his game felt “rusty.”Away from the course, Woods has been spending time with Vanessa Trump. In January, she was with him during his 50th birthday celebration, which also marked the 30th anniversary of his TGR Foundation. According to PEOPLE, the event raised around $50 million for charity and was held at The Breakers Palm Beach.A source told PEOPLE, “Tiger was with Vanessa but also busy talking to people he knows from the charity. There was some serious partying going down all night… They seemed to have a great time.”Their relationship was first confirmed in March 2025 by a source close to the Trump family, again reported by PEOPLE. Soon after, the two made it official on Instagram. Now, with Woods back on the course and Vanessa by his side, this return feels different. It is not just about golf anymore. It is also about the people supporting him through it.

CCPA warns hotels, restaurants of action for levying ‘LPG, Gas surcharges’

CCPA warns hotels, restaurants of action for levying ‘LPG, Gas surcharges’

NEW DELHI: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) on Wednesday warned hotels and restaurants of action in case it found them levying additional charges under heads such as “LPG charges,” “gas surcharge,” and “fuel cost recovery” in food bills. The authority issued an advisory invoking provisions of Consumer Protection Act observing that such charges are being imposed by default to circumvent existing guidelines on service charges. It said that no such charges shall be levied automatically, and warned that violations may invite “strict action” as this constitutes “unfair trade practice”.

Centre Pushes PNG: LPG Supply May Be Stopped Where Pipelines Are Available

In an official statement, the CCPA said that grievances received on the National Consumer Helpline (NCH), and media reports, show that certain hotels and restaurants are levying such charges in the consumer bill by default, over and above the price of food and beverages displayed in the menu and applicable taxes. “Such practices result in lack of transparency and impose unjustified costs on consumers,” it said. The authority clarified that input costs such as fuel, LPG, electricity, and other operational expenses are part of the cost of running a business and must be factored into the pricing of menu items. It advised eateries that the price displayed in the menu shall be the final price, exclusive only of applicable taxes. Consumers should not be misled or compelled to pay any additional charge that is not voluntary in nature. The CCPA said consumers who encounter such practices may request the hotel or restaurant to remove the charge from the bill; lodge a complaint on NCH by calling 1915 or through its mobile app and can also file a complaint before the appropriate consumer commission through the e-Jagriti portal.

British Airways plans bonus for pilots for cutting fuel use under new emissions-linked plan: Report

British Airways plans bonus for pilots for cutting fuel use under new emissions-linked plan: Report

British Airways is proposing a new incentive scheme that would reward pilots for reducing fuel burn and carbon emissions, with a potential bonus of up to 1% of basic salary if collective targets are metAccording to a document seen by Bloomberg, pilots would need to collectively cut their aircrafts’ carbon dioxide emissions by 60,000 tonnes above 2025 levels to unlock the payout. The incentive is due to begin next year, the report said. The plan, which has reportedly been under discussion for months, is expected to be put to a vote among members of the British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA) at the end of April, Bloomberg reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.

Focus on fuel-saving flying practices

The proposal says pilots could help improve efficiency through measures such as taxiing procedures and managing extra fuel loads, according to the document cited.“Flight crew decisions have a direct and measurable impact on fuel burn and emissions,” the document sent to BA pilots said.It added, “The incentive exists only to recognise and reward fuel efficient behaviours when, and only when, they are compatible with uncompromised safety and sound airmanship.”

Airline, union acknowledge discussions

A British Airways spokesperson said the airline was pleased to be working with BALPA on the initiative, while the union said it was discussing possible changes affecting BA pilots. The union represents 85% of pilots in the UK, the report said.

Rising oil prices and climate pressure

The move comes as airlines face pressure from surging oil prices, with crude rising above $100 a barrel amid the ongoing war in Iran. The report further noted that some carriers have already introduced surcharges or cancelled flights, while European airlines have warned that higher costs could be passed on to passengers.Like many global carriers, British Airways is aiming to become carbon neutral by investing in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), purchasing credits and operating more fuel-efficient aircraft. The UK government has said SAF must account for 3.6% of airlines’ total jet fuel demand this year as part of its broader plan to reach net zero by 2050.
