PSL ball-tampering row rekindles old doubts: Fakhar Zaman in the dock for a 2nd time

Pakistan batter Fakhar Zaman has found himself at the centre of a fresh ball-tampering controversy in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), with the latest incident reviving questions over a similar episode during the 2024 T20 World Cup.Zaman, along with Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sikandar Raza, has denied any wrongdoing following Lahore Qalandars’ four-wicket defeat to Karachi Kings at the Gaddafi Stadium. However, the 35-year-old has been charged with a Level 3 offence under the PSL Code of Conduct for allegedly altering the condition of the ball.

Fakhar Zaman’s latest PSL ball-tampering row

The controversy unfolded just before the final over of Karachi Kings’ chase, when they required 14 runs to win. Zaman was seen in discussion with Afridi and bowler Haris Rauf before the umpires intervened.On-field umpire Faisal Afridi called for the ball after it had passed between Rauf and Zaman. Following inspection, officials ruled that its condition had been altered, awarding Karachi five penalty runs and replacing the ball. The equation was reduced to nine off the final over, which Karachi chased down comfortably.Zaman has denied the charge before match referee Roshan Mahanama, with a verdict expected soon. Afridi also distanced himself from the incident, stating he was unaware of any change to the ball, while Raza echoed similar sentiments. The Pakistan Cricket Board has taken a serious view of the matter, with officials indicating that strict action could follow if the charges are proven.

Echoes of doubt from PAK vs USA T20 World Cup clash

The latest controversy has drawn attention back to an incident during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match between Pakistan and the USA in Dallas.During that game, Zaman was seen collecting the ball and placing it under his jersey for a prolonged period, with both hands appearing to manipulate it — raising suspicions among USA players. The act differed from conventional ball shining, which typically involves rubbing the ball with one hand.Soon after, the ball began to reverse swing noticeably, making batting more difficult despite the USA being in a strong position. The match eventually went to a Super Over, which the USA won.As per a Cricbuzz report, USA players reportedly raised concerns with officials, including fourth umpire Rod Tucker and match referee Jeff Crowe, though no formal charges were filed at the time.Questions without conclusionsWhile neither incident has resulted in a proven offence so far, the similarities — both in timing and nature — have intensified scrutiny around Zaman. Both situations occurred when his side was under pressure. With the PSL hearing pending, the outcome could determine whether this remains an isolated controversy or evolves into a larger issue. For now, Zaman maintains his innocence, but the spotlight on his actions has rarely been sharper.

Deadline day sees dozens of Maoists lay down arms | India News

Deadline day sees dozens of Maoists lay down arms

Dozens of Maoist cadres surrendered across Bastar in Chhattisgarh and Gadchiroli in Maharashtra on the final day of Union home minister Amit Shah’s March 31 deadline to end left-wing extremism, while Odisha declared itself free of Naxalite influence and scrapped its surrender and rehabilitation policy for those who failed to lay down arms on Tuesday. In Gadchiroli, for long one of the worst affected by Maoist violence, officials described the surrender of nine from Chhattisgarh as significant due to their role in operations spanning both states. Verification will precede rehabilitation benefits, including financial aid and skill training. The Centre has already reclassified Gadchiroli and Gondia in Maharashtra from Maoist-affected districts to “legacy and thrust” category — the final stage before full normalisation.Officials said coordinated strategy combining sustained security operations and incentives had weakened insurgent morale and encouraged surrenders.Odisha police said CPI(Maoist) had collapsed in the state with no fresh recruitment. Nine districts that once reported Maoist presence have now been cleared, leaving only a small patch in Kandhamal with limited activity. Forces remain on alert to prevent a resurgence. With this, only Bijapur in Chhattisgarh and West Singhbhum in Jharkhand remain categorised as Maoist-affected districts across the country. On Tuesday, at least 35 insurgents surrendered across five Bastar districts — 25 in Bijapur, five in Dantewada, two each in Sukma and Kanker, and one in Narayanpur — as security forces tightened pressure on Maoist networks. Nine more Maoists crossed the Indravati river from Chhattisgarh forests into Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli and surrendered with weapons and explosives.Security forces found 93 weapons, over 7kg of gold and Rs 2.9 crore cash from Maoist dumps in Bijapur alone, with the total haul valued at more than Rs 14 crore. In Dantewada, five cadres linked to the Dandakaranya special zonal committee surrendered. Police said intelligence provided by them led to the seizure of 40 weapons, including SLR and Insas rifles. SP Gaurav Rai said the surrender of “last five active Maoists” had rendered the district Naxal-free.

29 Naxal cadres give up arms in 3 Chhattisgarh districts

Bijapur police reported the surrender of 25 cadres, including members of area committees, alongside confiscation of weapons such as AK-47s. In Sukma, two women carrying rewards of Rs 8 lakh each surrendered. Forces seized Rs 10 lakh cash and rifles. SP Kiran Chavan said the district’s Maoist network had been “nearly dismantled”.Kanker saw two surrenders with an AK-47 rifle. SP Nikhil Rakhecha said 11 cadres had returned to mainstream in six days, though about 14 Maoists, including divisional committee-level members Chander and Rupi, were still active.Around nine lower-rung cadres are believed to be active in Kandhamal forests. “They may either be neutralised or arrested,” ADG (anti-Naxal operations) Sanjeeb Panda added.

Labourer from Odisha arrested for ATM fraud; four cases solved, 25 cards seized | Mumbai News

Mumbai: A 35-year-old labourer, who used to occassionally fly down from Odisha to Mumbai for duping ATM users here, was arrested by Dindoshi Police recently. Sambhav Kumar Acharya was on the run for the past four years, police said. He was nabbed from a hotel in Naigaon, Palghar, where he was currently staying. With Acharya’s arrest, four unsolved cases of cheating registered at Dindoshi, Kasturba Marg, Vanrai and Kurar police stations have been solved. The latest incident was reported on Feb 20 at an ATM in Malad East. A senior citizen was at the ATM to withdraw money when Acharya offered to help him. He memorised the 71-year-old complainant’s Pin number and discreetly swapped his ATM card with a blank one. Later, the senior citizen noticed that Rs 40,000 had been fraudulently withdrawn from his bank account. He lodged a police complaint.A Dindoshi police team, comprising sub-inspector Ajit Desai, and supervised by DCP Mahesh Chimte and senior inspector Mahendra Shinde looked through their files. They found that the accused’s image that was captured on cameras around the ATM centre matched that of a wanted criminal on their records. They had his old mobile number in their files and started analysing the phone records. Police also went through footage from close to 60 to 70 cameras for a period of one month prior to the crime to trace the accused’s movements. Eventually, police learnt that Acharya shunted between Odisha and Naigaon. They found his location in a hotel here and apprehended him. They recovered 25 ATM cards and two phones from him.

Security withdrawal from national conference office rocks J&K Assembly

SRINAGAR: The withdrawal of security of several legislators and politicians rocked the J&K Assembly on Tuesday after the governing National Conference (NC) raised the issue and flayed the LG administration for the removal of security at its headquarters in Srinagar, Nawai Subha, even after a recent attack on party president Farooq Abdullah, saying the move risked the lives of its leader and MLAs.Police and security in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir fall under lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha.Echoing concerns raised by NC members, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather said the national flag would not be safe in Kashmir if those holding it were unsafe. “Security issues shouldn’t be taken casually in J&K,” Rather said, adding that the administration should either declare J&K a risk-free place for politicians and political parties, or ensure proper security.“Recently, Dr Farooq Abdullah had a narrow escape, and after that, you withdrew security from the NC office, where he goes regularly, which is unfortunate,” the Speaker said. “It is a question of those who raise the Tricolour; they should remain safe.”Congress, too, claimed that the security of its J&K unit chief, Tariq Hameed Karra, had been withdrawn and that police had informed him that they did not have petrol for the escort vehicles and security guards.Earlier, the issue was flagged by NC legislators, with Hasnain Masoodi saying that instead of increasing security at the NC office after the attack on Abdullah, it had been withdrawn, and Nazir Gurezi asserting that the LG administration would be responsible if there was any untoward development. Javed Baig alleged that NC was being particularly targeted, and questioned why security at BJP and RSS offices had not been withdrawn.Salman Sagar, NC MLA from Hazratbal, said security of three Srinagar MLAs had been withdrawn despite being “on the hitlist” of terrorists. “The SHO in my area is telling me not to visit my constituency after 4 pm, and this is happening in Srinagar,” he said.Nizamuddin Bhat, Congress legislator from Bandipora, said security was a common concern for all parties in J&K and should not be treated as a largesse by the administration. He said Karra had told the SSP concerned that he was willing to provide petrol himself, but the security was still removed. Bhat said his own security, too, had been withdrawn despite being from the volatile Bandipora district.Even BJP’s S S Slathia demanded that govt should restore the security of everyone, but added that NC shouldn’t blame BJP, RSS or the LG.

Study warns of glacial outburst risk to buildings, bridges from 5 Kashmir lakes: Omar | India News

Study warns of glacial outburst risk to buildings, bridges from 5 Kashmir lakes: Omar

SRINAGAR: Five lakes in the Kashmir Valley have high susceptibility to glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), posing a threat to 2,704 buildings, 15 major bridges, road stretches, and a hydropower plant in their immediate downstream areas, a study by the University of Kashmir has found.Citing the study, CM Omar Abdullah, who also holds the disaster management and relief portfolio, told the J&K Assembly Tuesday that there is a need for continuous monitoring of these high-susceptibility lakes through remote sensing and targeted field assessments, as well as the installation of effective early warning systems. However, the CM said, a lake classified as highly susceptible does not mean it is currently unstable. He said it only means it may be more prone to an outburst compared to others if specific triggering conditions occur. “This does not imply that the lake is currently unstable or actively breaching or likely to fail in the immediate future,” Omar said in his written response. The study, conducted by researchers from the department of geoinformatics, has analysed 155 glacial lakes in the Kashmir Himalaya. Of these, Bramsar and Chirsar in Kulgam district; Nundkol and Gangabal in Ganderbal district and Bhagsar in Shopian district, have been categorised as having “very high susceptibility” compared with others in the region.Omar said accurate risk assessment of glacial lake outburst floods in the Kashmir Valley, including estimates of flood magnitude, velocity and warning time, requires reliable information on glacial lake volume. For this, he said, researchers at the department of geoinformatics have procured high-precision, powerful tools, including robotic echo-sounding boats, with support from the union ministry of earth sciences, to know the water volume of the lake.Using this facility, he said, in-depth surveys of high-risk glacial lakes in the western Himalaya are planned for 2026.

Fakhar Zaman officially handed cricket ban after PSL 2026 ball-tampering controversy

Following the shameful ball-tampering allegations against Fakhar Zaman in the match against Karachi Kings, the Pakistan batter has been handed the maximum penalty by the presiding match referee, Roshan Mahanama.

The Pakistan Super League was already facing some major blows in 2026. The season, which was expected to be one of the biggest seasons in the history of the PSL, has been reduced to two particular venues, with closed-door matches in the PSL. This is due to the ongoing deficit of resources in Pakistan following the war in the Middle East.

Fakhar Zaman banned from the PSL

Amid all these tensions, a terrible incident occurred in the PSL game between defending champions Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings. As the Kings needed 14 off the final over, the umpires found the Qalandars guilty of having altered the shape of the ball.

This led them to impose a five-run penalty, and Kings went on to win the game. Following the victory, Fakhar Zaman was questioned by the Match Referee Roshan Mahanama, who accused him of tampering with the ball.

Fakhar had then refused any such accusations. The match referee went on to hand out the maximum possible penalty to Zaman. He has been banned for the two upcoming games.

Fakhar Zaman to miss two upcoming PSL games

Fakhar Zaman, the Pakistan veteran, has been one of the most entertaining cricketers in the history of the competition. Playing for Pakistan, the batter was seen in some promising touch alongside Sahibzada Farhan when he was promoted to open the innings against Sri Lanka.

Zaman is among the few active players who played a role in Pakistan’s last ICC title triumph back in 2017 in the ICC Champions Trophy. Despite all this experience and a remarkable career, the batter hit rock bottom after being accused of such vile conduct.

He has been banned for the next two matches and hence would miss out on the upcoming games against the Multan Sultans on the 3rd of April and the former champions, Islamabad United, on the 9th of April.

Who can replace Fakhar Zaman for Lahore Qalandars?

The left-handed opening batsman being ruled out of the competition is a massive blow for the defending champions. However, the wicketkeeper batter Parvez Hossain Emon can be backed to open alongside Mohammad Naeem.

As Zaman’s replacement, Pakistani batter Tayyab Tahir can be brought into the XI. Tahir is an experienced campaigner who played 11 ODIs and 8 T20Is for Pakistan. However, the batter’s last matches were in April 2025 against New Zealand.

In this time of crisis, he could be the possible player to replace the veteran cricketer from Pakistan. The Qalandars made a winning start to their campaign but then lost their second match to the Karachi Kings.

After Ajinkya Rahane's 'ask CA' jibe; Australia head coach comes in support of Cameron Green

NEW DELHI: Expectations are sky-high from Cameron Green the all-rounder. It began with Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Ajinkya Rahane’s response to a reporter’s question about Green not bowling in KKR’s opening IPL 2026 match, and then Cricket Australia issued a clarification on Rahane’s remark. Since then, the debate has gathered pace. Now, Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has also weighed in, saying the all-rounder needs to balance the expectations from both his IPL franchise and the national team.“There’s huge expectation within the IPL, and there’s huge expectation with any all-rounder that shapes an Australian team. It’s not unfair, but there is an expectation around all-rounders that they contribute in a certain way,” McDonald told SEN Radio.Keeping in mind his all-round prowess, Green was bought by KKR for an eye-watering Rs 25.20 crore, making him the most expensive overseas buy ever in the IPL.“It’s almost like they want them to average 45 with the bat and average less than 30 with the ball. And there’s been very few that do that. I’m sure that his career will trend upwards,” McDonald said.

“We know he’s good enough. He’s just got to balance out all those expectations, and in particular, playing all three formats, which is a significant challenge for any cricketer,” he added.Rahane’s remark on an injured Green not bowling in the IPL match against Mumbai Indians had sparked a mild controversy over his fitness status. Later, Cricket Australia clarified that the KKR management is “fully aware” of the 26-year-old’s back niggle, which requires him to stay away from bowling for 10-12 days. However, McDonald said Green’s fitness concerns will not count against him when it comes to considering him as an all-format player, especially in Tests for Australia.“I think the answer to that is, yes (all-format player). I’ve got to talk to the selectors around that. But if you look at the last (Australian) team, Usman (Khawaja) has retired, and he vacates the No. 5 position,” the head coach said.“But you’ve got (Beau) Webster and Green that potentially can play in the same team, so that gives us incredible flexibility. But I think he’s (Green) good enough.“It’s only a matter of time before he gets to a situation where he’s performing for Australia. I think he’s got a few things to work on around his game, but that’s no different to anyone else,” he added. Also Read: PBKS vs GT Live Score
