EAM Jaishankar: Israel helped us during conflicts; key to defence tech

NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said Israel had helped India in military conflicts and been a reliable source of defence technology, even as he maintained that ties with Iran remained friendly, pointing to the latter’s decision to allow passage of four Indian ships through the Strait of Hormuz. His assertion at the all-party meeting about close ties came in response to a question from NCP’s Supriya Sule about the benefits of relations with US and Israel, said sources. While the US is a big trading partner of India and a source of high-end technology, Israel is a leading technological ally and has helped India during military conflicts, sources quoted the minister as saying at the meeting. While the minister did not elaborate, his comment on Israeli assistance during military conflicts was seen as referring to the help that Israel had speedily provided during confrontations with Pakistan. While Israeli assistance is hardly a secret, this was the first time that the minister, going by sources, had confirmed the same, although in an in camera meeting. The minister’s statement and its trigger came against the backdrop of suggestions of a tilt towards US-Israel that seemed to underpin questions of representatives of opposition parties.Jaishankar dismissed the charge that India had maintained silence over the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and had delayed offering condolences. He said that foreign secretary Vikram Misri had signed the condolence book the day it was opened. While denying that the decision not to condemn the attack on Iran has damaged ties with the Shiite country, the minister said that govt had to take into account the “outrage” in the UAE and Saudi Arabia over the damage caused by Iranian drones and missiles. He said over 8 million Indians work in these two countries.Jaishankar also said that Iran had expressed considerable appreciation for India saving its naval ship, IRIS Lavan, by allowing it to anchor at Kochi port when a US nuclear submarine that had sunk a sister ship, IRIS Dena, was lurking in the Indian Ocean. The minister said that IRIS Dena would also have survived if it had availed of India’s offer of safe harbour and not drifted towards international waters, where it was hit by a torpedo fired by the US submarine.Govt functionaries noted in the meeting that Iran had allowed four Indian ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which it has blocked since the war broke out, and five more were on the way.

Yuvraj’s Father exposes Abhishek Sharma’s indiscipline lifestyle

Yograj Singh, a former Indian cricketer and father of Yuvraj Singh slammed Abhishek Sharma, accusing for being indisciplined after winning the T20 World Cup 2026. The 68-year-old claims that instead of paying focus on practices, the batter has been doing reels since the team was crowned as the winner of the T20 World Cup 2026.

Most of the cricket fans and experts believed that Abhishek Sharma would have a stellar run in the flagship tournament. Take a step further, some even predicted that the batter could emerge as the highest run scorer as well. The reality is something else. The opener flopped in parts of the tournament.

Why Abhishek Sharma failed to impress in the T20 World Cup 2026? Yograj Singh explained

Abhishek Sharma started his T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a hat-trick of ducks. In total, the batter scored only 141 runs in eight games at an average of 17.62. In the final, the southpaw smashed a half-century against New Zealand.

The former cricketer said that Abhishek Sharma failed because he was not focused on his tasks. Instead of maintaining a balanced lifestyle, Yograj stated that the 25-year-old walks around doing reels.

“You fail because your mind is somewhere else. What is happening to Shubman Gill, Abhishek? The failure comes only when your mind is diverted somewhere else. That is what is happening with Abhishek. The guy walks around doing reels, that isn’t his job. He should bloody well go to bed at 9 PM, wake up at 5 AM, and play a thousand balls,” Yograj said on Insidesport.

Parties, girls, money, shooting all the time: Yograj Singh

Yuvraj Singh is the mentor of Abhishek, who helped the emerging batter to develop batting skills. Yograj believes that Sharma will need another age to go closer to his son.

“It would take him another age to go closer to Yuvraj Singh. The whole universe works on discipline. That’s how cricketers should work. Where are cricketers going wrong? Parties, girls, money, shooting all the time,” the veteran said further.

The former cricketer is disgusted with Sharma’s batting approach as well

In the interview, Singh bluntly mentioned that he is very much disgusted with Sharma for his batting approach. Yograj criticised Sharma as he often looks to smash the bowlers for maximums.

“I’m very disgusted with him (Abhishek Sharma). There are times when I drop him messages – don’t take this game for granted. He will always say ‘yes, sir’. There is something called a single, a double, and a boundary. Every time you cannot hit the ball in the air. You cannot keep hitting sixes and entertaining the crowd. You will fail”, Yograj Singh said.

The Indian team management, led by the head coach Gautam Gambhir, backed Sharma heavily during the bad patch. Despite back-to-back flop shows, the management never opted to drop him from the team. The batter paid off the trust by registering the half-century in the final, for the winning cause.

Have PNG access but not switched? Govt will stop LPG refills

NEW DELHI: In a bid to wean away consumers from LPG, govt has decided to stop after three months the supply of cylinders to households which have access to piped natural gas but have shied away from taking a connection. India imports about 60% of its LPG requirement, with nearly 90% of it coming through the Strait of Hormuz. Though about half of the requirement of LNG – converted into PNG and CNG and also used by industries and power plants – is also imported, officials said its supplies remain comfortable. A senior official said even rented houses where tenants currently use LPG will have to switch. LPG supply will not be stopped if the authorised entity issues an NOC stating providing a PNG connection is technically not feasible. Officials said city gas distribution (CGD) companies will send a communication to LPG consumers who can switch to PNG. Timelines prescribed for grant of right of way or permissions to CGD firmsEyeing quick expansion of the piped gas network, govt has made it mandatory for authorities to grant right of way or permissions to CGD companies within prescribed timelines, failing which approvals will be deemed granted. The order, issued under Essential Commodities Act, focuses on reforms to fast-track approvals for laying pipeline infrastructure and ensuring time-bound permissions.

Global boost: IITs make mark in QS top 50 rankings by subject

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: The Indian Institutes of Technology continue to anchor the country’s global reputation in engineering, placing multiple disciplines firmly within the world’s top 50 QS rankings by subjects. Close behind, management education is carving out its own space, with institutions such as IIM Ahmedabad pushing into elite global ranks and signalling India’s growing influence in business and strategy education. However, arts and humanities present a more complex picture, an area where progress has been slower, and in some cases, reversed. The latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 released Wednesday placed IIT Bombay‘s Computer Science (44), Electrical Engineering (44) and Civil Engineering (42) among the world’s leading technical institutions. IIT Delhi records an equally strong showing, with Electrical Engineering at 36, Mechanical Engineering at 44 and Chemical Engineering entering the top 50 for the first time at 48. IIT Madras, meanwhile, posts four top-50 finishes, led by Petroleum Engineering (29), along with strong returns to the top tier in Civil and Mechanical disciplines.Across the country, nearly 100 institutions now feature in the rankings, marking a 120% increase in five years. More significant is the quality shift: 44% of India’s entries improved their positions this year, the highest proportion among major higher education systems globally.Jessica Turner, CEO, QS Quacquarelli Symonds, said: “India’s rise this year is not just about scale: it’s about momentum in quality and global competitiveness. The breadth of improvement across engineering, technology and business signals a system that is accelerating with intent.”The gains are most visible in engineering. Chemical Engineering alone now has five Indian institutions in the global top 100, up from two. Electrical and Mechanical engineering each have six. Civil engineering has five. In Mineral and Mining Engineering, four institutions sit in the top 50.Computer science, once a thinner area of representation, has expanded rapidly. Ten Indian institutions now feature in the top 200, with IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi leading at 44 and 45 respectively-their highest-ever ranks. Moreover, IIT Kharagpur has entered Petroleum Engineering at 28 on debut and climbed sharply in Mineral and Mining Engineering. Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani has moved into the global top 50 in Pharmacy and Pharmacology. Vellore Institute of Technology has broken into the top 100 in Electrical Engineering for the first time.Beyond engineering. Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad has climbed to 21 in Business and Management Studies and made a debut at the same rank in Marketing, the first time an Indian institution has been ranked in that discipline. In medicine, All India Institute of Medical Sciences has reached its highest-ever global position at 105.

England cricket selection row explodes: ECB's 'people will be upset' response to Liam Livingstone's 'no one cares' claim

England Cricket Board’s (ECB) managing director Rob Key has responded to comments made by all-rounder Liam Livingstone, saying the player remains in contention for selection despite his recent criticism of the team management.Livingstone, who has not played international cricket since England’s winless campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy under former captain Jos Buttler, had told ESPNCricinfo that the management, including Key and head coach Brendon McCullum, did not show enough concern for players once they were dropped. He also said Key did not communicate with him before his central contract expired, claiming he was told there were “100 more important things to do”.

Responding after England’s Ashes review, which followed a 1-4 loss in Australia, Key said: “Look, I am not going to go into private conversations. Obviously, there is another side to that conversation as I saw it. What I did say to Liam at the end of what was a fairly tetchy phone call to say the least [was that] there is no way I see a player of Liam Livingstone’s ability not being up for selection for England.”Key added that Livingstone had been discussed for a return during the limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup and remains in the mix, provided he performs.“We debated him for the Sri Lanka series. Liam Livingstone is very much a player that we would love to see back to his best, scoring runs, and then back in the England set-up,” he said while talking to Sky Sports. He also pointed out that Livingstone was once considered for leadership responsibilities. “We thought as much of him [as] to make him captain at one stage, when we didn’t have all the senior players there,” Key said, referring to an ODI series against West Indies in late 2024.“That is how highly we thought of him. I still have a huge amount of time for Liam Livingstone, and there is no reason that someone at 32 years of age, their England career should be over,” he added.Livingstone had earlier described the team environment as a clique, saying, “If you are in, you are in, and if you are not in, no-one cares about you.” Key rejected that claim and said such reactions are expected when players are left out.“You are always going to have times where, unfortunately, in these roles – especially when you’re struggling – you are always going to have people that you have upset along the way coming back at you, and that is absolutely fine,” Key said.He also noted that it is not possible to keep everyone satisfied in such roles. “But ultimately, Liam Livingstone, or any of these players at the start of the summer in county cricket, they are a chance to play for England,” he added.Livingstone has arrived in India for the Indian Premier League, where he will play for Sunrisers Hyderabad after being signed for Rs 13 crore. His side will begin their campaign against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a team he represented last season. He had a strong IPL season in 2022 with Punjab Kings, scoring 437 runs in 14 innings at an average of 36.42 and a strike rate above 182, including four fifties. In the following three seasons, he managed 502 runs in 27 matches at an average of 22.81, with three fifties and a strike rate above 150.For England last year, he scored 74 runs in five T20Is at an average of 14.80 and a strike rate of 127.58, with a highest score of 43.His performances in domestic competitions helped him regain attention ahead of the IPL auction. Playing for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred, he scored 241 runs at an average of 40.16 and took seven wickets. In the Vitality Blast for Lancashire, he made 260 runs at an average of 52 with a strike rate above 176 and picked up six wickets.

New catching rule? Captains warned over ‘Incomplete’ catches ahead of IPL 2026

The TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is just three nights away from entering its 19th edition. All teams are gearing up for the upcoming tournament, which will run for more than two months. IPL 2025 champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will be facing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on the opening day. Ahead of the IPL, there has been a new rule change.

The rule change has been in place during the game; all the IPL captains have been warned about fielder movement before and after completing a catch. All 10 franchise captains have been informed that the fielder must have complete control of the ball and his body before the catch is considered complete and celebrations begin.

New catching rule in IPL

Clause 33.3 and Page 64 of the Playing conditions state an oft-repeated point: “The act of making a catch shall start from the time when the ball first comes into contact with a fielder’s person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his own movement.”

Your daily dose of cricket!

The rule previously existed for a long time. However, during a meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday evening, captains were shown video recordings of various catches, some of which were deemed unfair.

Impact player rule to stay for two more seasons

At least one incident clearly demonstrated the problem, with officials emphasising that a fielder’s body must be completely under control for the catch to be declared legal. This rule, the teams were assured, will be strictly followed. BCCI head of match referee Javagal Srinath and BCCI head of Umpire panel Nitin Menon addressed this particular section of the 90-minute meeting.

All 10 captains were present in Mumbai for the captains’ photoshoot with the trophy. It was also discussed that the ‘Impact Player’ rule will be there for another two seasons and will be reviewed after the 2027 season. Though many captains have voiced their disagreement with this rule.

Captains not happy with impact player rules

Previously, Axar Patel voiced his concern over the impact player rule, saying that he does not like it personally, being an all-rounder, and pointed out that because of the rule, the coaching staff goes for either a specialist batter or a bowler.

“It was discussed, and it was made clear to all of us that the Impact Player rule is here to stay for at least two more seasons,” said a franchise member who attended Wednesday’s meeting.

During the captain’s photoshoot, they had a fun moment against each other playing with a tennis ball cricket on a closed box turf. The IPL is the oldest running franchise league in world cricket.

The impact player rule has advantages and disadvantages; the rule allows teams to bat deeper, leading to more explosive batting and higher-scoring games. It helps teams balance the disadvantages of batting or bowling first based on the pitch conditions. The extra batting cushion often makes it harder for bowlers to make a difference.

Now, autonomous colleges to require Univ nod for courses | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Autonomous colleges affiliated to Mumbai University will have to ‘mandatorily’ seek approval for all their programmes and courses from the university’s academic council. Till date, colleges were only expected to ‘inform’ the university of the new courses they planned to offer. Additionally, these colleges will have to submit their examination committee minutes and status of their question paper and answer sheet audits to the university’s board of examinations and evaluation (BEE) on a regular basis. These guidelines in a recent circular issued by the university’s examination board, aimed at enhancing transparency, strengthening data integration and standardising processes. It has drawn mixed reactions from the academic community. Another decision was also taken at the university’s academic council meeting on Wednesday to regulate their courses. The administration, in a move to frame regulations for courses offered by autonomous colleges, directed them to design curricula in line with the National Education Policy, adopt course nomenclature as per the regulations of relevant apex bodies, and strictly adhere to the university’s passing scheme and standards. With a sharp rise in the number of autonomous colleges under the university, academicians have welcomed the initiatives to regulate courses and examination systems, saying they will help maintain checks and balances. The number of autonomous colleges affiliated to MU has increased from 39 to 130 over the past five years, particularly after the University Grants Commission relaxed the eligibility norms by removing the requirement of an ‘A’ grade from NAAC for autonomous status. A section of principals, however, also argued that it could violate the rights of colleges to exercise autonomy. A principal, however, said that colleges which are striving to become better will continue to do so.In Wednesday’s meeting, the university also issued the much-awaited guidelines for the fourth year under the NEP, for the first cohort from autonomous colleges. To offer the fourth year, the concerned college must have a postgraduate programme or a research centre on the subject. Colleges that conduct PG programmes will be able to offer four-year honours programmes and the ones with a research centre can offer the honors with research ones. Under the Honours Degree option, students are required to complete 160 to 176 credits over four years, with the fourth year dedicated to an in-depth study of their major subject along with a mandatory 4-credit internship. Under the Honours with Research option, students must undertake a 12-credit research project or dissertation in their major subject during the seventh and eighth semesters, with a minimum eligibility requirement of a CGPA of 7.5.
