Cabinet approves UDAN 2.0 at Rs 28,840 crore to expand regional air connectivity

The Union Cabinet has approved a modified UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme worth Rs 28,840 crore aimed at strengthening regional air connectivity through new airport infrastructure, enhanced financial support for airlines and operational assistance for smaller aerodromes.Under the revamped programme, 100 new airports will be developed in challenge mode, with an estimated average cost of Rs 100 crore per airport. The government has provided budgetary support of Rs 12,159 crore for this component to improve connectivity in remote and underserved regions. The scheme also proposes the development of 200 modern helipads, particularly to improve access in Himalayan, North-Eastern and island regions, as well as aspirational districts. A budgetary allocation of Rs 3,661 crore has been earmarked for helipad construction. In addition, the modified UDAN framework includes support for the acquisition of Made-in-India aircraft, backed by budgetary assistance of Rs 400 crore, with the objective of strengthening domestic aviation manufacturing capabilities. To improve route sustainability, the government will provide Viability Gap Funding (VGF) support ranging from 80 per cent to 90 per cent for airlines operating under the regional connectivity scheme. This assistance will be tapered over a five-year period, with an overall budgetary outlay of Rs 10,043 crore. The Cabinet has also approved operation and maintenance (O&M) support for RCS aerodromes for three years, recognising the higher operating costs faced by aircraft operators and airport developers in low-traffic regions. The scheme provides for an annual ceiling of Rs 3 crore per airport and Rs 90 lakh per heliport, supported by a budgetary allocation of Rs 2,577 crore.Government said the updated UDAN scheme aims to deepen regional connectivity, improve accessibility in difficult terrains and support balanced economic development by integrating smaller towns and remote regions into the national aviation network.

'Talking bulls**t' about Arjun Tendulkar': Yuvraj Singh's father blasts R Ashwin
R Ashwin and Arjun Tendulkar

NEW DELHI: A debate has broken out over Arjun Tendulkar’s chances in IPL 2026 after Ravichandran Ashwin said the youngster is unlikely to feature for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). With a strong pace attack already in place, Ashwin felt Arjun would struggle to break into the playing XI.Speaking about the team combination, Ashwin said, “Arjun Tendulkar khelega hi nahi (Arjun Tendulkar won’t play at all), and let’s not even go there. I think it is very difficult because there are Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, Avesh Khan, and Mohammad Shami in this lineup. There are so many fast bowlers. How will he play? I don’t think he makes any case unless and until there are a lot of injuries.”

What are you?”He also shared his own views on Arjun’s abilities, saying, “He is Sachin Tendulkar‘s son, that is a different story. SWOT analysis of Punjab Kings: PBKS’ report card ahead of IPL 2026

Punjab Kings (PBKS) enter the IPL 2026 season with a mix of hunger and heartbreak. After a spectacular run in 2025 that saw them dismantle giants on their way to the final, they fell agonizingly short against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, the narrative around the franchise has shifted from “perennial underachievers” to “clinical contenders.”

With Shreyas Iyer—a captain known for his tactical composure and ability to build championship cultures—at the helm, the Kings have moved away from their historical tendency of frantic squad overhauls. Instead, they have cultivated a balanced unit that combines explosive international flair with the most exciting young Indian domestic talent. As they head into the new season, the Mullanpur stadium isn’t just expecting entertaining cricket; it’s expecting silverware.

Can PBKS clinch the IPL title this time?

The ghosts of the 2025 final defeat will surely serve as fuel rather than a burden. Last year, PBKS proved they had the temperament to survive the knockout stages, a hurdle that had tripped them up for a decade. The core reason they can go one step further in 2026 is their leadership and stability.

Iyer has already tasted IPL success as a captain and knows how to navigate the pressure of a final. Furthermore, the squad depth appears more robust this year. While they were “undone” by RCB last year, the addition of big-game players like Marcus Stoinis and the rising maturity of Prabhsimran Singh suggests they have more tools to handle high-pressure chases. If their pace spearheads remain fit, there is no technical reason why PBKS cannot cross that final hurdle and finally lift their maiden trophy.

Punjab Kings SWOT analysis: IPL 2026

Strengths

  • The spin king factor: With Yuzvendra Chahal leading the attack and Harpreet Brar providing pinpoint accuracy, PBKS boasts one of the most lethal spin duos in the league. Chahal’s ability to take wickets in the middle overs remains their greatest defensive weapon.
  • Aggressive Indian core: The retention of Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran provides a fearless batting backbone. These players have proven they can strike at 150+ without needing a “settling-in” period.
  • Death bowling mastery: Arshdeep Singh remains one of the world’s best at the back end of an innings. Combined with the raw pace of Lockie Ferguson, PBKS has the variety to defend totals even on small grounds.

Weaknesses

  • Over-reliance on all-rounders: While having Marco Jansen, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Aaron Hardie is a luxury, it can lead to “selection headaches.” Finding the right balance between these four overseas spots without compromising the bowling or batting depth is a delicate act.
  • Top-order consistency: While Iyer anchors the middle, the team has occasionally struggled with finding a consistent opening partner for Prabhsimran who can match his aggression without throwing their wicket away early.

Opportunities

  • The Musheer Khan breakout: After a stellar domestic run, all eyes are on Musheer Khan. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a potential “X-factor” that could provide the balance PBKS has lacked in previous years.
  • Marcus Stoinis in the finisher role: If Marcus Stoinis is utilized as a pure finisher rather than a floater, he has the potential to win 3-4 games single-handedly, much like he has done in the BBL and previous IPL stints.

Redemption for Shreyas: After missing out on the title last year, Iyer has the opportunity to cement his legacy as the greatest captain in PBKS history by delivering their first-ever star above the crest.

Threats

  • The finalist hangover: History shows that teams losing a final sometimes struggle the following year due to the weight of expectation. PBKS must ensure they don’t play “safe” cricket out of a fear of failing again.
  • Injury management: With a heavy reliance on overseas fast-bowling all-rounders (Jansen, Hardie, Bartlett), an injury to any of these key pillars mid-season could disrupt the team’s entire structural balance.
  • The Mullanpur surface: If the home tracks turn out to be flat high-scoring belters, it might negate the advantage of their skilled spinners and turn games into tosses of a coin.

RCB’s big changes ahead of IPL: New rules, tribute & squad update

SRH on Wednesday shared a video in which Ishan spoke about his new challenge — leading the side.“I am very overwhelmed, and I am very happy that I got this opportunity to lead this team. And, to be very honest, I am going to just keep it simple, not to do so much because when players come for IPL, I think they are all very good players. You just need to make sure that they are on the right track,” Ishan said.“And their mindset does not change after a few innings, going here and there. And the rest is, you know, it is going to be a good season, I guess, and we will just do it together. I think there is lots and lots and lots of learning in this season because I will tell you, in the last few years, I have understood one thing, the most important thing for a cricketer is to be in a very good headspace throughout the season,” he added.“So, mostly this season, we will make sure we just stay in the present, we just keep it simple and do as much hard work as we can before the match starts. But in the match, we are just going to enjoy the game and take one match at a time,” he added.Ishan had a stellar 2026 T20 World Cup, scoring 317 runs at an average of 35.22, with a strike rate of over 193.“It was, I feel, the best few days of my life because, you know, joining the team suddenly and winning the World Cup with the team, so it was one of the best moments. Because, you know, there was a lot of hard work going on. Players were, a few of them were not in form, but when the time was there, when it was needed the most, everyone played the best possible cricket. And we just tried to play the best role in the team, and I think we all achieved greatness with that this season,” he said.Ishan also spoke about the power of manifestation, saying he always believed he would make a big comeback.“When I was not in the team, there was no–I mean, how do I explain it? There was always this feeling that I would make it to the team anyhow, because I knew that the amount of hard work I would do would be the most important thing. And you know, you always need to believe in yourself,” he said.It was the domestic grind that helped Ishan build his path to the biggest prize in T20I cricket, as he led Jharkhand to its maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) title last year, topping the charts with 517 runs in 10 innings, including two centuries and two fifties.“This will be a message to I feel so many guys, whoever is losing track or whoever is not believing in themselves, and they should know that they are supposed to believe and just keep on working hard. Things will change,” he signed off.

60 million barrels of Russian crude booked by Indian refiners amid global supply strain

60 million barrels of Russian crude booked by Indian refiners amid global supply strain

Indian refiners have stepped up purchases of Russian crude as they lock in supplies for the coming month, with around 60 million barrels secured, according to people aware of the developments. The move comes as disruptions linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict continue to affect global oil flows. The cargoes have reportedly been contracted at premiums ranging between $5 and $15 per barrel over Brent, people told Bloomberg, speaking on condition of anonymity. The overall volume is similar to the purchases made for the current month, while majorly surpassing the levels seen in February, based on estimates from data intelligence firm Kpler. The latest buying activity comes after a waiver issued by the US, after which India has turned towards imports of Russian oil, already been loaded onto vessels before March 5. The measure was introduced to help address supply constraints arising from the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and was later broadened to include additional countries, with updates permitting crude already at sea before March 12 to be purchased.India, which depends heavily on imports to meet its energy needs, had emerged as a major destination for discounted Russian crude following the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022. However, purchases were scaled back amid pressure from the United States, prompting refiners to source more oil from Saudi Arabia and Iraq. A large portion of those shipments subsequently remained within the Persian Gulf after the escalation of the current conflict.Officials in New Delhi are expecting the US waiver to continue as long as disruptions in the Hormuz route persist, according to the people cited. Refining companies such as Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd. and Hindustan Mittal Energy Ltd, which had stayed away from Russian supplies since December, have now resumed participation in the market. At the same time, Indian refiners are broadening their sourcing strategy to manage uncertainty in global supplies. Imports of Venezuelan crude for April delivery are projected at about 8 million barrels, the highest level since October 2020, according to Kpler. Venezuela is thus playing a larger role in India’s diversification efforts.Russia, meanwhile, is benefiting from the renewed demand and higher pricing environment, with the Kremlin seeing elevated earnings from crude exports, marking its strongest performance since March 2022, shortly after the conflict in Ukraine began.Earlier this month, Reliance Industries Ltd. reportedly purchased 5 million barrels of Iranian crude, following adjustments in sanctions policy that enabled such transactions. This comes after US administration gives a 30-day waiver for Iranian oil already in transit. The exemption covered cargo loaded on or before March 20, including shipments on sanctioned vessels, provided delivery and discharge were completed by April 19.
