IPL 2026: Shubman Gill’s World Cup snub ‘will fire him up’, says Pujara

Cheteshwar Pujara believes Shubman Gill has the perfect motivation to deliver a standout campaign in IPL 2026 after missing out on India’s T20 World Cup squad.Speaking on JioHotstar, Pujara backed the Gujarat Titans captain to respond strongly, stressing that Gill remains a complete, multi-format player who can force his way back into India’s T20I setup with a strong showing this season.

IPL 2026 should be audition for the next India T20I captain

“The T20 World Cup squad snub will definitely fire up Shubman Gill. He is a quality player suited for all three formats. If he has a good IPL 2026 season, he will surely put his name in India’s T20I squad. He is leading the Test squad and is also the ODI captain. He is a multi-format player. If he has a good season, he will be back in the scheme of things for the Indian team,” Pujara said.Pujara acknowledged that the omission could bring added pressure but also described it as a major opportunity for Gill to showcase his growth in the shortest format. He emphasised that improving his scoring rate will be key.“There will be some pressure on him because he has not been part of the India squad in the shortest format. But at the same time, it is a great opportunity for him to carry on batting the way he has. He needs to try to accelerate a little more because that is something he has been working on. This IPL season is the perfect one for him to show he can bat at a strike rate of 150 to 160,” he added.Explaining why Gujarat Titans could emerge as strong title contenders, Pujara highlighted the consistency and firepower of their top order, which includes Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler.“GT look like a title favourite this season. If you look at their squad, the top order of Captain Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler is incredible. You cannot have a better top order than them. These three have scored runs with amazing consistency. That is their main strength,” he said.He also pointed to the depth provided by all-rounders, particularly the addition of Jason Holder, while identifying Rahul Tewatia as the side’s primary finisher and Shahrukh Khan as a potential game-changer.“The number of all-rounders they have, especially with the addition of Jason Holder, makes them even stronger. Holder is in great form with both bat and ball, and will love to contribute in both departments. Rahul Tewatia will be their main finisher. He can bowl a few overs if needed, but his primary job is to bat well at number six or seven. Shahrukh Khan is also a key player. If he starts performing as per his potential, GT will be a different team altogether,” Pujara said.On the bowling front, Pujara underlined the strength of GT’s pace attack, led by Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, with experienced backup and variety in the squad.“When it comes to bowling, their strength is their seamers. Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna are their main pacers, and Ishant Sharma is also on the bench if needed. Ashok Sharma will be unleashed with his fiery pace at some point in the season. Left-armer Luke Wood is another seamer who knows how to do well. If Rabada does not perform, Wood can replace him. But I hope Rabada, being a strike bowler, has a good IPL. All GT fans will be hoping the same,” he concluded.Gujarat Titans will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on March 31. They will then play their first home game against Rajasthan Royals at the Narendra Modi Stadium on April 4, followed by an away clash against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 8. Their next fixture is against Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on April 12.

Inside Qeshm: How Iran turned a holiday island into a strategic missile hub

Inside Qeshm: How Iran turned a holiday island into a strategic missile hub

As the US-Israel war escalates, once tourist-dominated Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz has now become an ‘underground missile city’.Beneath its salt caves and emerald mangrove forests lies a network of military installations that have transformed the island from a free-trade and tourist hub into a strategic fortress.Qeshm once attracted visitors for its surreal rock formations and coral reefs. Today, the world’s attention is now focused on the Iranian forces stationed there, according to Al-Jazeera. The island’s size, approximately 1,445 sq km (558 sq miles) allows it to control the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil and gas transport. The island has a population of 148,000 residents, who are primarily Sunni Muslims speaking the Bandari dialect. However, military escalation has placed their daily routines under growing pressure.

Strategic importance of Qeshm

Qeshm’s free trade-industrial zone comprises vast underground silos, missile facilities and fast-attack boats intended to dominate the Gulf. The island is located 22 km south of Bandar Abbas. The island is central to Iran’s “asymmetric” naval strategy, enabling Tehran to threaten or halt shipping through the strait.Retired Lebanese Brigadier-General Hassan Jouni described Qeshm as housing “striking Iranian capabilities” designed for the sole purpose of controlling the Strait of Hormuz. Shipping traffic was effectively halted last week after Iran threatened to strike vessels attempting to pass, forcing countries to negotiate safe passage for oil and gas tankers while the US plans a naval convoy to reopen the route. The escalation has already had civilian consequences. On March 7, US airstrikes targeted a desalination plant on the island, cutting off freshwater to 30 surrounding villages. In retaliation, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) struck US forces at Bahrain’s Juffair base.

Historical significance of Qeshm island

The island, known in Arabic as Jazira-al-Ṭawila (‘the Long Island’), has a layered history of strategic importance. Greek explorer Nearchus called it Oaracta. By the ninth century, Islamic geographers referred to it as Abarkawan, later called Jazira-ye Gavan or “Cow Island.”In 1301, Hormuz rulers relocated their court to Qeshm to escape Tartar attacks. The Ottomans raided it in 1552, Portuguese built a fort in 1621 and a year later, Persian and English forces expelled them. The British later maintained a naval base at Basidu until 1863, demonstrating the island’s enduring military significance.Despite militarisation, Qeshm remains ecologically vital. Its Hara mangrove forest is a breeding ground for migratory birds, while the Qeshm Geopark, UNESCO-recognised in 2006 preserves the island’s geological treasures

Anthony Albanese: ‘Get them out of here’: Australian PM Anthony Albanese, Tony Burke heckled at Eid prayers in Sydney over support for Israel — watch

Anger of the Muslim community toward the Australian government spilled into an Eid prayer gathering in Western Sydney, attended by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, as a small number of attendees called for the leaders to be removed from the mosque. The leaders, attending the event in Lakemba — part of Burke’s electorate — were seated among thousands, ahead of Eid al-Fitr celebrations, when a handful of people began heckling during a post-prayer address, ABC News reported. Shouts of “boo Tony Burke, boo Albanese,” “genocide supporters,” and “get them out of here” rang out, though many others in the crowd appeared welcoming.NSW Police were called to the mosque over a disturbance about 8am and ordered a 33-year-old man to move on. He was escorted out without any further incident.

The man, Sheikh Mukhlis, said he was thrown off the stairs barefoot after heckling Albanese and Burke.“The question we need to ask ourselves is why are they there in our sacred places, in our sacred times, put up in front, smiling for photos,” he said in a social media video.“The irony is, if you listen to what the sheikh was actually saying in his khutbah, about our happiness being incomplete because there isn’t peace in Gaza and there’s a war in Lebanon.”The Muslim community has been divided on whether the federal govt should be invited to events due to their ongoing strained relationship. There have been increased tensions due to criticisms of the govt’s response to the Israeli war in Gaza, the increase in Islamophobic attacks in Australia and the NSW Police’s response to Muslim men who were praying during a protest in Sydney.Lakemba Mosque itself has received several hateful and threatening letters this year, which it said have left the community fearful.Today was the first time the Lebanese Muslim Association invited Albanese to the Lakemba Mosque since October 7, 2023.Lebanese Muslim Association secretary and spokesman Hajj Gamel Kheir said choosing to re-engage with the govt is a way to give their concerns a voice.“Walking away from engagement has not advanced our community, nor has it changed outcomes overseas,” he said in a statement after the incident this morning.“We do not open our doors for appearances.“We do so because real conversations require access, and because our community deserves to be heard directly, not spoken about from a distance.”

In a social media post after the commotion, Albanese said it was an honour to attend the Lakemba Mosque.“Eid Mubarak. An honour to join thousands for Eid al-Fitr at Lakemba Mosque this morning,” he said.Albanese also visited the Lakemba Ramadan Night Markets with his wife Jodie and Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek earlier this month.

Will Preity Zinta’s Punjab Kings punish Lockie Ferguson for missing early part of IPL 2026?

Punjab Kings (PBKS) fans can breathe easy – Lockie Ferguson’s absence from the early part of IPL 2026 won’t lead to any disciplinary action. The New Zealand pacer, who is set to miss the first seven matches of the season, has taken time off for personal reasons, and both the franchise and the BCCI are reportedly supportive of his decision.

Strict rule for missing the entire IPL season

At first, there was confusion because of the strict IPL rule introduced before the 2025 mega auction. Under that rule, any overseas player who pulls out after being picked risks a two-season ban. That’s exactly what happened to England’s Harry Brook when he withdrew from IPL 2025.

However, Ferguson’s situation is very different. He hasn’t opted out of the tournament entirely – he has only taken a planned break and will join the squad later in the season. As a result, his absence has been officially classified as “planned leave,” not a breach of contract.

“He is not available for the first seven games,” an IPL source told PTI. “Ferguson’s move is classified as a planned leave for personal reasons rather than a breach of contract or an unauthorised absence, and thus no sanctions are anticipated,” he added.

This clarity comes as a big relief for Punjab Kings, who finished runners-up last season and are looking to build momentum early in IPL 2026. Importantly, the franchise has taken a humane approach – recognising that some moments in life are bigger than cricket.

Ferguson prioritises family as Punjab Kings look for a strong start

The reason behind Ferguson’s decision is both simple and heartwarming. The 34-year-old recently became a father for the first time and wants to spend time with his newborn son and support his partner during this important phase.

Speaking about his choice, Ferguson made it clear that family comes first.

“Just had a wee son; trying to spend as much time as I can at home and help the wife out. I’ll have a few weeks off after this before sort of heading to the later stages of the IPL and away for the winter.”

He also spoke about the challenge of finding the right balance between professional commitments and personal life.

“Sometimes the hard part is deciding when to take a rest. This feels like the right time, especially since my wife was looking after the baby while I was at the World Cup,” he told Cricbuzz.

While he will miss the first half of the tournament, Ferguson has shown encouraging form leading into the IPL. In a recent T20I against South Africa, he delivered an impressive spell, picking up 1/9 in four overs, along with a three-wicket performance in the previous match. These performances suggest he will return sharp and ready for the crucial latter stages of the league.

In the meantime, Bollywood actress Preity Zinta-owned Punjab Kings are not short on options. The franchise boasts a strong pace attack featuring players like Marco Jansen, Arshdeep Singh, Azmatullah Omarzai, Xavier Bartlett and Ben Dwarshuis. Jansen, in particular, has been in excellent form and is expected to play a key role in Ferguson’s absence.

PBKS will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 30 in Guwahati. While they will have to manage without Ferguson initially, the team remains confident in its depth and balance.

Mumbai condemns damage to Iran’s World Heritage sites | Mumbai News

The 17th-century Chehel Sotoun Palace, a Unesco World Heritage site in Isfahan, was damaged by airstrikes. Its name, meaning ‘Forty Columns’, comes from 20 pillars reflected in a pool to appear as 40

MUMBAI: They survived invasions, coups, World War II and the eight-year war with Iraq. Now many of Iran’s iconic heritage sites — including the Unesco-listed Golestan Palace, Naqsh-e Jahan Square and Chehel Sotoun Palace — have suffered damage following US-Israel airstrikes. Iran has said it installed blue flags on all heritage and cultural sites as a signal to Israel and the US, in vain.Historians, Zoroastrian researchers and heritage enthusiasts have expressed outrage at the damage to these World Heritage sites, saying they “belong not just to Iran, but to humanity”. Many of the monuments — including museums and mosques — may not have been directly hit. However, they sustained damage from shockwaves and falling debris caused by strikes on nearby govt buildings and military and police infrastructure.Among the sites are Ali Qapu Palace, Golestan Palace and Falak-ol-Aflak Castle. The castle, built atop an ancient hill during the pre-Islamic Persian Empire of the Sasanian era, stands in Khorramabad in Lorestan Province. “Fifty-six museums, historical monuments and cultural sites have so far sustained damage,” said Hamid Sharifi, public diplomacy officer at the Consulate General of Iran in Mumbai.Historians say the damage to heritage sites in Isfahan is particularly heartbreaking. Landmarks such as Naqsh-e Jahan Square — a 16th-century plaza spanning 964,000 square feet — and the gardens and pavilion of Chehel Sotoun Palace are so magnificent that they helped earn Isfahan the title Nisf-e-Jahan, or “half the world”, among Iranians. “I have been to Iran many times and am devastated at the reported damage to these historic sites,” said Firoza Mistree. “As a Zoroastrian, I consider Iran my homeland, though I live in and love India. The sites associated with the pre-Islamic Persian Empire were well maintained, and Iranians are proud of their heritage. I am heartbroken.”The reported damage to Chehel Sotoun Palace is no less painful for historians. In Persian, chehel means 40 and sotoun means column. The palace’s twenty wooden columns are reflected in the garden’s long pool, creating the illusion of forty — a feature that gives the monument its name.Historians say the destruction of such sites erases shared cultural memory. “All heritage sites are universal and carry the cultural memory of human civilisation,” said historian Rana Safvi. In a social media post, Mehdi Jamalinejad said, “In the 21st century, with the most advanced weapons, they target the oldest symbols of civilisation.”

‘Winnability a factor’: Shashi Tharoor on concern over less women in Kerala fray
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor (File photo)

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday strongly backed greater women’s representation in elections when asked about fellow colleague Shama Mohamed complaining about the low number of tickets allotted to women candidates for the Kerala Assembly polls.Acknowledging the dearth of women’s representation in proportion to the population, the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha MP highlighted the need for women’s reservation. He was also asked about fellow Congress leader Shama Mohamed’s post on X on Friday on the low number of tickets being given to women candidates.“I have been for some time very much in favour of greater women’s representation,” Tharoor told news agency PTI.The Congress leader, however, listed out the possibilities that determine ticket distribution ahead of the polls, one of which he said would have been the “winnability” factor.“And I’m sorry to say, I do agree that when women are half the population, that they get only 9.8 per cent of the seats is not fair. But again, those who made these decisions, and I’m not one of them, I’m not part of the selection process for candidates, but all I can say is that those who’ve done that must have taken all factors into account. And they claim that ultimately they were guided by winnability and that’s a principal thing,” Tharoor said.He further said that once women’s reservation comes into force, it would provide a “fair opportunity to more hard-working women leaders”.“But when women’s reservation comes, I think that’ll be an end to these debates and we will see a fair opportunity to more hard-working women leaders,” he added.Congress leader Shama Mohamed on Friday raised concerns over the low representation of women in the party’s candidate list, urging Rahul Gandhi to intervene. In a post on X, Mohamed said that out of 92 tickets, only nine had been allotted to women. She also pointed to the Lok Sabha elections, where just one woman was fielded among 16 candidates in Kerala.”Denied but not defeated,” she wrote, appealing to Rahul Gandhi to support women leaders in the state unit. Her remarks come a day after the Congress finalised its candidates. Leader of opposition VD Satheesan said the party has locked in all 95 nominees it is contesting. “We had announced 55 candidates earlier and have now finalised the remaining 40. The selection process is complete, and we will now move into campaign mode,” he said.Kerala will vote in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4.

Petrol and diesel price today: Premium petrol price hiked; how much fuel costs in your city today? Check list

Petrol and diesel price today: Premium petrol price hiked; how much fuel costs in your city today? Check list

As the Middle East conflict continues to boil and oil continues to soar, consumers are growing concerned about the cost of petrol and diesel. State-run oil marketing companies have raised prices of premium petrol variants by more than Rs 2 per litre, while keeping retail rates of regular petrol and diesel unchanged. The hike affects high-performance fuels such as BPCL’s Speed, HPCL’s Power and IOCL’s XP95, with increases ranging between Rs 2.09 and Rs 2.35 per litre. Despite the revision in these premium offerings, there has been no change in the price of regular petrol, according to ANI.At the same time, industrial consumers are facing a steep rise in diesel costs. The price of bulk diesel was increased by around Rs 22 per litre on Friday, mirroring the surge in global crude oil prices amid the ongoing Middle East conflict. In the national capital, the price of bulk diesel has been revised upwards from Rs 87.67 per litre to Rs 109.59 per litre.

Premium Petrol Prices Hiked By Up To ₹2.35 Per Litre In India Amid West Asia Conflict

In contrast, retail fuel prices remain steady, with normal diesel still priced at Rs 87.67 per litre and petrol at Rs 94.77 per litre. At a media briefing, Sujata Sharma, joint secretary, ministry of petroleum and natural gas, assured that there is no increase in prices of normal petrol and diesel. Here’s how much petrol and diesel cost in your city today:

City Petrol (Rs/litre) Diesel (Rs/litre)
New Delhi 94.77 87.67
Mumbai 103.54 90.03
Kolkata 105.45 92.02
Chennai 100.84 92.3
Jaipur 104.72 90.21
Bengaluru 102.96 90.99
Ahmedabad 94.49 90.17

The divergence between stable retail fuel prices and rising industrial fuel costs comes as global oil markets remain volatile. Crude prices climbed to $119 per barrel on Thursday amid the intensifying Iran war, before easing to around $108 per barrel. The ongoing Iran conflict has significantly disrupted global energy dynamics, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a key transit route for nearly 20% of global energy supplies. Heightened attacks on energy infrastructure by both sides, Iran and Israel-US, along with concerns over shipping disruptions, have pushed crude prices above $100 per barrel, with peaks nearing $120.India’s dependence on imported crude makes it particularly vulnerable to such disruptions. The country sources about 85–90% of its crude oil from overseas, with roughly 40–50% passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Any disturbance in this route raises freight and insurance costs, increases the overall import bill and heightens the risk of supply constraints.Analysts caution that even a $10 increase in crude oil prices can significantly expand India’s import bill and fuel inflationary pressures. The effects are already visible, with pressure on the rupee, foreign investor outflows, and growing concerns over rising fuel and LPG costs.
