NEW DELHI: Kolkata Knight Riders have been dealt a major setback ahead of IPL 2026, with key pacer Harshit Rana ruled out for the entire season due to a knee injury. The young fast bowler picked up the injury during a T20 World Cup warm-up match and has since undergone surgery, leaving the team scrambling to fill the gap.

Head coach Abhishek Nayar admitted Rana’s absence will be tough to handle, given his importance to the team in recent seasons.“It is a big blow because Harshit Rana has been an integral part of this team for the last couple of seasons, also the championship season. Over the last year, he’s really grown as a cricketer,” Nayar told reporters in the pre-season press conference.“We will always miss Harshit Rana, it’s not easy to replace him. But over the last few days, we’ve looked at a few bowlers as to who fits in and who can do that role to the best of their prowess. Hopefully, we’ll take a call in a couple of days,” he added.KKR have been trying out several pacers in training as they search for the right replacement.

More injury concerns for KKR?

To make matters worse, Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana is also recovering from injury and is yet to be cleared to play, adding to KKR’s worries. However, there is some positive news around spinner Varun Chakravarthy. Despite an expensive outing in the T20 World Cup, captain Ajinkya Rahane backed him to bounce back.“I don’t see any problem with Varun’s bowling ability… In the T20 World Cup, opposition batters played him (Varun Chakravarthy) really well. Let’s give credit to them rather than talking about Varun,” Rahane said.“I think this 10-day break really helped him after especially coming after a high-intensity tournament to another high-intensity tournament,” Rahane added. With the season starting soon, KKR will hope to overcome these challenges quickly.

After six years halt, India-China trade via Lipulekh Pass set to restart

Border trade between India and China through the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district will resume this year after remaining suspended for six years, officials said, according to PTI.District Magistrate Ashish Bhatgai said preparations have been initiated following directions from the Union government for the trade session, which typically runs between June and September. The resumption follows the issuance of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) by the Ministry of External Affairs. He said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has written to Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan requesting restoration of trade through the Himalayan pass. The letter also noted that clearances have been granted by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The district administration has been asked to coordinate with concerned departments to ensure operational readiness for the 2026 trade season. Local officials’ contact details will be shared with Chinese counterparts to improve coordination between the two sides.Authorities responsible for issuing trade passes, designated banks handling currency exchange, the Customs Department and the Dharchula administration have been directed to prepare a comprehensive action plan. This includes arrangements related to transit camps, communication facilities, banking services, security deployment and medical support for traders.Border trade with Tibet via the Lipulekh route had earlier resumed in 1992 after a long suspension, but was halted again in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Welcoming the decision, Jeevan Singh Ronkali, president of the Simant Vyapar Sangathan in Pithoragarh, said reopening the route would allow traders to retrieve goods that have been lying in warehouses in Tibet’s Taklakot since trade activities were stopped in 2019

US stock markets today (March 20, 2026): S&P 500, Dow, Nasdaq slip as bond yields rise; crude oil prices steady amid Iran war

US stock markets today (March 20, 2026): S&P 500, Dow, Nasdaq slip as bond yields rise; crude oil prices steady amid Iran war

US stocks edged lower in early trade on Friday, putting Wall Street on course for a fourth consecutive weekly loss, although a modest easing in oil prices helped stabilise broader global markets, according to an AP report. The S&P 500 declined 0.5% in morning deals and was headed toward its longest losing streak in a year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 126 points, or 0.3%, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.8% as of 9:35 am Eastern Time.Market sentiment remained weighed down by a further rise in Treasury yields, which increases borrowing costs for companies and households and tends to pressure valuations across asset classes. Yields have been climbing since the Iran conflict began amid concerns that prolonged disruptions to energy supply could drive inflation higher.Growing uncertainty over inflation has also reshaped expectations around US monetary policy. Traders have largely abandoned bets on multiple interest-rate cuts this year and are even pricing in a small probability of a rate hike in 2026, data from CME Group showed.Lower borrowing costs would typically support growth and investment prices — a stance US President Donald Trump has strongly advocated — but such easing could aggravate inflationary pressures.Outside the United States, equity markets showed greater resilience after heavy losses in the previous session. Major European indices moved marginally higher and South Korea’s market gained 0.3%, although Chinese benchmarks weakened.A slight pullback in oil prices provided some relief. Brent crude, the global benchmark, dipped 0.3% to $108.29 a barrel, while US benchmark crude remained broadly flat at $95.53. Oil has been highly volatile in recent weeks as investors gauge the duration and economic impact of the conflict in West Asia, particularly disruptions to shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles roughly one-fifth of global crude flows. On Wall Street, shares of Super Micro Computer plunged 28.2% after US authorities accused a senior executive and two affiliates of conspiring to smuggle advanced Nvidia-based servers to China. The company said it is cooperating with investigators and has placed the employees concerned on administrative leave while ending ties with an accused contractor.FedEx, however, rose 2.8% after reporting quarterly earnings that exceeded analysts’ expectations. In fixed-income markets, the yield on the 10-year US Treasury climbed to 4.32% from 4.25% late Thursday and from about 3.97% before the onset of the Iran conflict.

Kris Srikkanth names his playing XI of Delhi Capitals (DC) for IPL 2026

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 set to kick off on March 28, anticipation among fans is reaching fever pitch. After months of auctions, trades, and strategic reshuffles, franchises are gearing up for another high-octane season. Among the teams drawing significant attention are the Delhi Capitals (DC), who appear to have assembled a well-rounded and formidable squad. With a blend of experienced internationals and exciting young Indian talent, DC head into the new season with renewed hope and ambition. Fans will be eager to see whether this revamped unit can finally deliver consistency and mount a serious title challenge.

Kris Srikkanth names his preferred Delhi Capitals XI for IPL 2026

Former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth has shared his thoughts on what he believes should be Delhi Capitals’ strongest playing XI for IPL 2026. His selection reflects a mix of stability at the top, firepower in the middle, and variety in the bowling attack.

Srikkanth has backed KL Rahul and Abishek Porel to open the innings, a combination that offers both composure and attacking flair. At number three, he has slotted in Nitish Rana, whose experience in the IPL could prove vital in anchoring the innings when needed.

The middle order, according to Srikkanth, is where DC can truly dominate. He has picked David Miller and captain Axar Patel to provide solidity and finishing ability, followed by the explosive Tristan Stubbs and rising star Ashutosh Sharma. This lineup ensures depth and flexibility, allowing DC to adapt to different match situations.

In the bowling department, Srikkanth has gone with a strong and diverse attack. Vipraj Nigam finds a place as a promising option, while Kuldeep Yadav leads the spin charge. The pace attack is spearheaded by Mitchell Starc and Lungi Ngidi, both capable of making an impact with the new ball and at the death. Srikkanth also named Jammu and Kashmir star pacer Auqib Nabi as impact sub player.

Kris Srikkanth’s DC XI for IPL 2026: KL Rahul, Abishek Porel, Nitish Rana, David Miller, Axar Patel (c), Tristan Stubbs, Ashutosh Sharma, Vipraj Nigam, Kuldeep Yadav, Mitchell Starc, Lungi Ngidi.

Impact Sub: Auqib Nabi.

Star-studded Delhi Capitals aim to deliver big

The Capitals enter IPL 2026 as a balanced and star-studded unit, built around a strong core featuring Axar, Rahul, Kuldeep, and Starc. The franchise has clearly focused on addressing the weaknesses that hurt them in the previous season, particularly their middle-order inconsistency and struggles in the death overs.

The inclusion of experienced campaigners like Miller and Nitish adds much-needed stability, while players like Stubbs and Ashutosh bring explosive finishing ability. This combination makes DC’s lower middle order one of the most dangerous on paper. Their bowling unit also looks formidable, with a mix of pace and spin options capable of adapting to different conditions. While the likes of Starc and Ngidi provide raw pace and wicket-taking ability, Kuldeep’s spin remains a key weapon in the middle overs.

However, much of DC’s success could depend on how well their top order performs. Finding consistency at the top has been a challenge in previous seasons, and the team will hope that their chosen combinations click early in the tournament.

‘I feel embarrassed’: AB de Villiers rips into IPL openers, stat comparison | Cricket News

'I feel embarrassed': AB de Villiers rips into IPL openers, stat comparison

Former South Africa superstar AB de Villiers has delivered a brutally honest take on IPL batting comparisons, openly expressing his frustration with how stats are used, especially when comparing middle-order players to openers.

“It Irritates the Living Daylights Out of Me”

Speaking on Mbangwa Media Youtube channel De Villiers didn’t hold back while addressing comparisons with top IPL run-scorers:“So I hate it when they compare my runs to other players in the IPL, because then I go like, but I haven’t faced as many balls as the openers. It irritates the living daylights out of me.”“This guy scored 8,000 runs, he’s the best ever. I’m like, no, I’m better than him he’s faced more balls. Don’t do it.” he added.

“It’s the Easiest Thing in the World”

The former RCB legend took aim at the advantage openers enjoy in T20 cricket: “And then on top of that, they’re all openers and they bat with these restrictions only two guys out, and it’s like, it’s the easiest thing in the world, especially in India. It’s ridiculous, man. You can’t play cricket like that.”

“Don’t Compare My Stats With Openers”

De Villiers questioned the fairness of comparing players across batting positions: “But then don’t compare my stats now that I know that, with everybody. They’re all openers, all the main top run-scorers, the Orange Caps they have. Do you know why it irritates me?” de Villiers saidHe even suggested tweaking the fielding restrictions in the powerplay:“At the very least, okay, with a new ball, when the ball’s pinging and flying, at the very least just have your fielding restrictions taken away in the first six overs, T20s in India short boundaries, great wickets. The advantage is the new ball already. It’s flying. It’s already too easy. Don’t just have two fielders out of the ring.”

“Unfair to Bowlers”

The Proteas legend highlighted how bowlers are often at a disadvantage: “But I do feel it’s a bit unfair to the bowlers in the IPL, the first six overs. Forget about the stats and me being me. It’s just a tough watch.”De Villiers pointed out how even mistimed shots can bring boundaries: “Very often, they play bad strokes and get rewarded for it, your sliced ball that you didn’t hit in the area you wanted to… and you still get four.”Using Travis Head as an example, he said: “Now it’s like Travis Head, it’s just flying everywhere. Inside edge four, outside edge four. Good shot, six, great, but it’s one out of three.”“What is that? 33% strike and you’re on 15 off four balls.” he added.

“I Feel Embarrassed”

De Villiers revealed his own mindset when scoring lucky boundaries: “Honestly, when I hit an inside edge for four, I feel embarrassed, I even sometimes apologise to bowlers, I swear because I feel like that’s not right, now these openers, just runs everywhere. New ball flying. It bothers me.”“Why do you think some captains, at the back end of their careers, promote themselves to open the batting in T20 cricket?”

“Give Me a Chance Up Front”

De Villiers ended with a pointed remark about his own batting position: “I got demoted to five at the back end of my career. I’m like, what do you got? because I’m a good finisher? No, give me a chance as well with a new ball up front.”

AB de Villiers In IPL

AB de Villiers enjoyed a remarkable IPL career, scoring 5162 runs in 184 matches at an impressive average of 39.70 and a blistering strike rate of 151.68, including 3 centuries and 40 half-centuries, with a highest score of 133*. What makes his numbers even more special is the context unlike most top run-scorers, de Villiers primarily batted in the middle order, often at No. 3 to 5, and still managed to dominate attacks with 251 sixes and over 400 fours.

Industrial diesel prices hiked by Rs 22/litre amid Gulf crisis; no change in retail fuel prices

Industrial diesel prices hiked by Rs 22/litre amid Gulf crisis; no change in retail fuel prices

The price of bulk diesel sold to industrial users was hiked by about Rs 22 a litre on Friday, reflecting the spike in global oil prices amid conflict in the Middle-East, even as the rates of normal petrol and diesel remained unchanged. In Delhi, bulk or industrial diesel prices were raised from Rs 87.67 per litre to Rs 109.59. By contrast, a litre of normal diesel in the national capital continues to cost Rs 87.67, while normal petrol remains priced at Rs 94.77 per litre.

Premium Petrol Prices Hiked By Up To ₹2.35 Per Litre In India Amid West Asia Conflict

The increase in bulk diesel rates comes as international oil prices touched $119 per barrel on Thursday on intensifying Iran war, before pulling back to around $ 108 a barrel. At a media briefing, Sujata Sharma, joint secretary, ministry of petroleum and natural gas, said there is no increase in prices of normal petrol and diesel.“Some increase is reported in the premium category which hardly makes up for 2-4 per cent of the entire petrol (sold in the country),” she said. “There is no increase in price for the common man.”Pricing decisions, she said, are taken by oil companies independently as petrol and diesel pricing was deregulated in 2010 and 2014 respectively. “It (pricing) is decided by oil marketing companies. Government does not regulate petrol and diesel prices,” she added, as quoted by PTI.The government is closely monitoring global oil markets, but there is no immediate plan to raise retail fuel prices. Oil marketing companies are expected to absorb the current cost pressure for the time being.“Our priority is to make energy available to all consumers, which we have been doing all through the crisis. Till now we have not increased the prices,” she added.Retail petrol and diesel prices have been frozen since April 2022, with fuel retailers like Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) absorbing losses when crude prices are high and making profits when rates are low. This meant that when global fuel prices went up in response to elevated crude prices, prices were stable in India. And when softening of crude prices pushed down fuel rates globally, rates in India remained unchanged. The government wants to continue to shield consumers, and the same policy will continue unless there is a huge spike in crude prices.India imports 88 per cent of its crude oil needs and roughly half of its natural gas requirement. These mostly come via the Strait of Hormuz. Following the US and Israeli attacks on Iranian government, military and nuclear facilities, Iran warned shipping away from the strait, and insurers withdrew coverage, effectively halting tanker movements.Prices had risen to $119 per barrel in June 2022 in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. That year, oil companies had nominal profits, but in FY24, they posted record Rs 81,000 crore profit, helping make up for past dent in margins. This year, the three companies have posted Rs 23,743 crore profit in the December quarter alone.

Royals eye strong comeback

Rajasthan Royals will be hoping such signs translate into performances on the field after a disappointing IPL 2025 season, where they finished near the bottom despite Jaiswal scoring 559 runs. The team has made several changes, including bringing in experienced all-rounder Jadeja, while also dealing with the absence of Sam Curran due to injury. There is also excitement around young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who impressed last season with his aggressive batting, including a record-breaking century. With a mix of youth and experience, Rajasthan Royals will be aiming to turn things around in IPL 2026, and moments like Jaiswal’s in practice offer early optimism for fans.

'Stand in solidarity with Afghanistan': India sends 2.5-ton medical aid to Kabul after Pakistani strikes on rehab centre

NEW DELHI: India on Friday delivered a 2.5-ton consignment of medical supplies and equipment to Kabul following a deadly airstrike on a drug rehabilitation center in the Afghan capital that killed over 400 people. The external affairs ministry said that the shipment carried emergency medicines, medical disposables, kits and equipment to support treatment and recovery for those injured in the attack on March 16.“India stands in solidarity with the Afghan people and will continue to extend all possible humanitarian support in this difficult hour,” the MEA said in a statement. The airstrike struck a large drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul late Monday night, reportedly destroying significant portions of the 2,000-bed complex. Local authorities said at least 400 people were killed and nearly 250 injured. Loud explosions were heard around 9:00 pm (local time) and plumes of smoke were visible from nearby Shahr-e-Naw and Wazir Akbar Khan districts. The incident comes amid heightened tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Pakistan has repeatedly conducted airstrikes in Afghanistan in response to cross-border attacks allegedly carried out by militants sheltered by the Taliban government. Afghan officials, meanwhile, have described these incursions as violations of their sovereignty, with senior leaders emphasizing the duty of all citizens to defend the nation.

Officer’s Strava activity reveals location of French aircraft carrier in eastern Mediterranean

Officer’s Strava activity reveals location of French aircraft carrier in eastern Mediterranean

A French officer reportedly revealed the location of an aircraft carrier deployed towards the Middle East after publicly recording a run on the sports app Strava. The officer, referred to as Arthur by French news outlet Le Monde, logged a 35-minute run on March 13 while exercising on the deck of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. Using a smartwatch, he uploaded the activity to the app, creating a map that showed the vessel’s location.According to Le Monde, the carrier was northwest of Cyprus, around 100km (62 miles) from the Turkish coast, with satellite images capturing the vessel and its escort. BBC Verify said it was unable to find the route, though it was possible it had later been deleted or the user’s privacy settings had been changed. In a statement to AFP news agency, the French armed forces said the reported incident did “not comply with the current instructions” and that appropriate measures would be taken if the report was true. The Charles de Gaulle is the main part of a carrier strike group recently deployed to the eastern Mediterranean by France’s ministry of armed forces, as tensions in the region continue due to the Iran war. The ministry said the group was sent “to protect French nationals, defend France’s interests in the region, and support its partners and allies”.Aboard the vessel are 20 fighter jets, two surveillance aircraft and three helicopters. The deployment is part of France’s recent bolstering of its military presence in the Middle East, which French President Emmanuel Macron described as strictly “defensive.”The incident is the latest in a series of cases in which activity on Strava has exposed sensitive details. Le Monde previously reported that runs shared by Macron’s bodyguards jeopardised his location on several occasions, while Secret Service agents accompanying then-US President Joe Biden also shared their whereabouts on the app in 2024.A similar report that year said the app showed bodyguards for Russian President Vladimir Putin at luxurious properties the Kremlin denies owning. Another Strava feature, its ‘heatmap’, has also faced criticism for sharing exercise routes of military personnel at bases around the world. The heatmaps show all public activity recorded by users globally, allowing people to zoom in and explore different areas. In 2018, the US military said it was examining the map after security concerns were raised. A disinformation watchdog also said the app allowed suspicious figures to identify and track security personnel working at secretive bases in Israel.San Francisco-based Strava uses a mobile phone’s or fitness device’s GPS to track exercise activity. The company says it has more than 195 million users in more than 185 countries.
