Amid session, Shinde meets Modi in Delhi, sparks buzz | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Political circles were rife with speculation after deputy CM Eknath Shinde flew to Delhi late on Monday during the ongoing state legislature session and met PM Narendra Modi in Parliament the next day.The two held detailed discussions on a wide range of national and state-related issues. Shinde conveyed Shiv Sena‘s full and unequivocal support to the PM in view of the challenges posed by the West Asia crisis. The meeting, which was attended by Shiv Sena MPs, lasted over an hour. Matters related to Maharashtra’s development were discussed at length. Later, while speaking to reporters, Shinde slammed Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of govt, saying spreading misinformation and indulging in political commentary during a sensitive and war-like situation is deeply unfortunate and against national interest. He accused Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) of triggering panic by spreading rumours about gas shortage. Taking a dig at Shinde’s visit, Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said the “high command” of his party is not based in Mumbai and that although the faction continues to use the name ‘Shiv Sena’, its leadership lies elsewhere. Shinde last visited Delhi in Oct 2025 ahead of the BMC election, the third such in four months.

From Glenn Maxwell to Tim Paine: Complete list of Australian players and coaches in PSL 2026

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 is heading into one of its most uncertain starts yet, with serious concerns emerging just days before the tournament begins on March 26. What was supposed to be a celebration of cricket has now been overshadowed by rising geopolitical tensions, particularly after a deadly airstrike in Kabul.

Rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan after Kabul airstrike

The situation escalated dramatically on the night of March 16, when Pakistan carried out what it described as “precision airstrikes” under Operation Ghazab Lil Haq. According to Pakistani authorities, the strikes targeted militant infrastructure in Kabul and Nangarhar, allegedly linked to attacks on civilians.

However, Afghan officials have strongly disputed this narrative. They claim the strikes hit a major civilian facility – the Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital in Kabul. Reports suggest that the hospital, which had a capacity of 2,000 beds, was completely destroyed. Officials have stated that over 400 people were killed and around 250 injured in the incident.

While Pakistan has denied targeting any civilian structure, the scale of the reported casualties has sparked international concern and significantly raised security alarms for foreign players.

Australian contingent in a tough spot ahead of PSL 2026

Despite the tense situation, a total of 17 Australian cricketers and coaches are currently contracted across multiple PSL franchises. Their involvement now depends heavily on evolving safety conditions and government advisories.

The uncertainty is particularly impactful because many of these players are key figures in their respective teams, including globally recognized names and experienced coaches.

One of the biggest concerns revolves around the March 28 fixture between Peshawar Zalmi and Rawalpindi Pindiz. The match, scheduled to be held at the Imran Khan Cricket Stadium in Peshawar, is now in serious doubt after the city was marked as a “do not travel” zone by Australian authorities.

She reviewed preventive health check-ups, wellness counselling, and menstrual hygiene awareness programmes for women.During the programme, the Chief Minister launched several key initiatives, including a compendium of schemes related to women and children and the WCD newsletter. She also distributed health mix kits to pregnant and lactating mothers, provided incentives to Anganwadi workers, and launched the Juvenile Justice Management Information System (JJMIS) portal to improve child-centric service delivery.Under the ‘Give to Gain’ initiative, she called for stronger collaboration between the government and the private sector to enhance Anganwadi centres and child care institutions. The initiative will support the installation of sanitary napkin vending machines, infrastructure upgrades, expansion of mobile health services, and new programmes for women and children, along with creating livelihood opportunities for women and SHGs.The chief minister reaffirmed that the government remains fully committed to empowering women, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for children, and uplifting vulnerable sections of society. She added that when women are empowered, both society and the nation grow stronger–and Delhi is moving firmly in that direction.

Beyond oil & gas: How Middle East conflict impacts India – from gold & diamonds to aircraft & fertilizers

Beyond oil & gas: How Middle East conflict impacts India - from gold & diamonds to aircraft & fertilizers
10% of India’s non-energy imports in 2024 originated from the Middle East region. (AI image)

The Middle East conflict has brought into focus the vulnerability of countries around the world in terms of their dependency on oil and gas. India, the world’s fifth largest economy, is also the third largest importer of oil. A big portion of its gas needs – LPG and LNG – is also dependent on imports routed via the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally crude oil prices climbing above $100 per barrel have also led to shockwaves globally – and India is also expected to see a hit on its current account deficit as the oil import bill rises. But beyond oil and gas, several other sectors of the economy will likely see a hit if the US-Iran war continues for a longer duration.

‘Will Maintain Exports Again’: Piyush Goyal Highlights India’s ‘Stable’ Trade Amid West Asia War

According to Barclays, India’s non-energy imports from the Middle East are sizable as well – at approximately 10% of total non-energy imports. “Middle East’s position in global trade goes beyond energy, with material but underappreciated exposures across chemicals, construction, agriculture and basic manufacturing,” says Barclays India in a report. However it notes that the starting point for the Indian economy, whether it is in terms of GDP growth, inflation, external and fiscal balances, is quite robust. This offers enough headroom, going into this price and supply shock from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, it says.

Beyond oil & gas: Which sectors of Indian economy are vulnerable?

As Barclays points out: 10% of India’s non-energy imports in 2024 originated from the Middle East region. The research report finds that the dependency is particularly higher for imports of diamonds (47.5% of India’s total imports come from the Middle East), fertilisers (63%), polymers (50%) and hydrocarbons (48%)!Also Read | India’s Goldilocks under threat? How US-Iran war, crude oil above $100 may deal a blow to growth story – explainedThe Middle East plays an important role in global trade that extends well beyond energy supplies. The region also has significant, though often underestimated, influence across sectors such as chemicals, construction materials, agriculture and basic manufacturing. While India’s reliance on energy shipments from the Middle East is well known, its dependence on non-energy imports from the region cannot be ignored. Countries including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Iraq, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain accounted for roughly 10% of India’s total non-energy imports in 2024.

How Middle East conflict impacts India beyond oil & gas

How Middle East conflict impacts India beyond oil & gas

Not only that, in some sectors such as precious metals including gold, diamonds, platinum and silver, India typically imports raw materials and processes them domestically before exporting finished jewellery. Since the Middle East is also a major destination for these exports, any extended disruption to imports caused by the conflict could also affect India’s export activity in these products. For other sectors, such as aircraft components and NPK fertilisers, Barclays is of the view that alternative sources can help offset some supply disruptions. Countries outside the Middle East such as Germany and Paris for aircraft parts, and Russia and China for fertilisers, together account for a larger share of India’s imports in these categories. Assuming these partners have the capacity to expand trade with India, they could potentially help bridge any shortfall arising from reduced Middle Eastern supply, the research report says.Barclays sees ‘some pain’ from the hit to the supply of nitrogenous fertilisers (63% dependency on Middle East), given the share of second/third largest partners lag way behind (Russia: 22%, China: 5%). “If the supply disruption prolongs, leading to a surge in international prices, the government may have to raise fertiliser subsidies, similar to its policy reaction following the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, media reports indicate the government is already trying to diversify sources of imports, including from China,” Barclays notes. In the hydrocarbons sector, private refiners could potentially be encouraged to prioritise domestic supply over exports if needed, which would help soften the impact of reduced external imports. “In sum, beyond the energy dependence, India’s dependence on the Middle East can be met via alternate sources and/or redirecting domestic production for domestic consumption, before exports,” it concludes.

Iran pushes to shift matches

Iran’s football federation is in talks with FIFA to relocate their matches to Mexico. Federation chief Mehdi Taj made their stance clear, saying, “When (US President Donald) Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America.” “We are currently negotiating with FIFA to hold Iran’s matches in the World Cup in Mexico,” he added.Iran is currently scheduled to play games in the United States, including matches against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. However, officials are worried about safety and logistical issues, including visa problems.

FIFA responds, tensions rise

FIFA confirmed it is in contact with Iran but has not agreed to any changes yet. A spokesperson said, “FIFA is in regular contact with all participating member associations, including IR Iran, to discuss planning for the FIFA World Cup 2026.” He added, “FIFA is looking forward to all participating teams competing as per the match schedule announced on 6 December 2025.”Iran’s concerns grew after comments from Donald Trump, who said the team would be welcome but warned they should not travel “for their own life and safety”. Iran strongly pushed back, stating “no one can exclude Iran’s national team from the World Cup”.With ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, the situation remains uncertain, and it is still unclear what will happen if Iran ultimately decides not to participate.

Supplying weapons, aiding drone ops: Inside US citizen Matthew Van Dyke’s Myanmar plot | India News

Supplying weapons, aiding drone ops: Inside US citizen Matthew Van Dyke’s Myanmar plot

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Monday granted 11-day police custody to six Ukrainians and a US citizen arrested for illegally entering Myanmar via India and contacting ethnic war groups. This comes after the National Investigation Agency arrested three Ukrainians from Delhi, three from Lucknow, and one US citizen from Kolkata.According to the investigative agency, the accused — namely Matthew Aaron Van Dyke, Hurba Petro, Slyviak Taras, Ivan Sukmanovskyi, Stefankiv Marian, Honcharuk Maksim, and Kaminskyi Viktor — were in direct touch with, and abetted, terrorists carrying AK-47 rifles. The agency also said the accused, linked with ethnic armed groups, were supporting certain proscribed Indian insurgent groups by supplying weapons, terrorist hardware, and training them. How do they reach Myanmar?According to news agency AFP, the group first illegally entered Mizoram without an official permit. The seven then allegedly passed from Mizoram into neighbouring Myanmar. It is also alleged that they brought a huge consignment of drones from Europe via India. However, the type of drones or their countries of origin is not clear yet.Myanmar descended into civil war after a junta seized power in a 2021 coup, with pro-democracy guerrillas and ethnic-minority armed groups fighting for control of large parts of the country.New Delhi has been suspicious of certain Myanmar factions that share ethnicity with populations on the Indian side of the border, fearing a spillover of violence and unrest.Who is Matthew Aaron Van Dyke?Matthew Aaron Van Dyke is not new to controversies. The American adventurer-turned-filmmaker has gained attention for embedding himself in conflict zones and aligning closely with rebel movements.According to The Guardian, Van Dyke first came into the spotlight during the 2011 uprising in Libya, where he fought alongside anti-Gaddafi rebels.During the Libyan conflict, Van Dyke was captured and detained for six months in Tripoli’s Abu Salim prison before escaping after the fall of the regime.Van Dyke describes himself as a “freedom fighter” and documentarian. He later surfaced in Syria during the uprising in Aleppo, where he said he was filming a documentary on the rebel movement. However, he also admitted to advising fighters on weaponry based on his experience in Libya, blurring the line between observer and participant. His activities and self-presentation have drawn criticism from some observers, who accuse him of being a reckless thrill-seeker rather than a neutral storyteller.Critics argue that his involvement in combat situations undermines journalistic integrity and puts others at risk.Van Dyke has actively used social media and crowdfunding platforms to promote his projects, aiming to create viral content that could draw global attention to conflicts like Syria and generate support for rebel groups. Despite setbacks — such as the suspension of his Kickstarter campaign — he has continued pursuing his work in high-risk environments. He maintains that his efforts are driven by a belief that conflicts like Syria’s are underreported and that impactful storytelling can influence public opinion and support on the ground, even as he acknowledges the significant personal risks involved. What the court said? The court noted that the FIR contains serious allegations that the accused travelled to prohibited areas in Mizoram, illegally crossed into Myanmar, and established links with ethnic armed groups and proscribed insurgent organisations. It also took note of allegations that the accused were involved in supplying weapons, imparting training, and assisting in drone-related operations.Observing that these aspects “definitely affect national security and interests of India,” the court held that the matter cannot be treated as routine in nature. The order was passed by Additional Sessions Judge Prashant Sharma at Patiala House Courts on March 16, in a case being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).Upon perusal of the case diary, the court observed that the investigation is still at a nascent stage but has shown progress in recent days. While reiterating that custody orders should not be passed mechanically, the court found that sufficient material exists to justify further police custody in the present case.Allowing the NIA’s plea, the court held that custodial interrogation is necessary to unearth the larger conspiracy, identify accomplices, trace funding sources, and analyse digital evidence, including mobile phones and social media accounts. It also noted that disclosures made during initial interrogation indicate a wider conspiracy involving cross-border activities and links with insurgent groups. In a significant observation, the court stated that there is “no ground to have suspicion over the manner in which FIR is registered or the manner in which investigation is being done.”The court concluded that, given the gravity of the allegations — particularly those involving national security and cross-border links — continued custodial interrogation is justified at this stage, while rejecting all objections raised by the defence.

US stock markets today (March 17, 2026): S&P 500, Dow climb as airline demand outlook lifts sentiment

US stock markets traded higher in early deals on Tuesday even as crude oil prices resumed their upward movement, signalling a more stable investor response after sharp volatility linked to the ongoing war with Iran. The S&P 500 rose 0.7 per cent in early trading, coming off its strongest session since the conflict began. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 428 points, or 0.9 per cent, as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.6 per cent, AP reported.Oil prices moved higher again, though still below last week’s closing levels. The price of benchmark US crude increased 1.1 per cent to $94.53 a barrel, while Brent crude, the global benchmark, climbed 1.9 per cent to $102.15. Financial markets have been wary that a prolonged disruption to global oil supplies could push prices sharply higher and weigh on economic growth.Airline stocks provided support to the broader market after Delta Air Lines raised its revenue outlook for the first quarter of 2026, citing accelerating demand from both corporate and leisure travellers into March. The company said that despite higher jet fuel costs, strong bookings could help it deliver profit in line with earlier forecasts.Delta’s shares surged 4.9 per cent, lifting sentiment across the sector. American Airlines gained 4 per cent and United Airlines rose 3.7 per cent.Technology stocks also contributed to gains. Uber Technologies jumped 5.2 per cent after announcing an expansion of its partnership with Nvidia to launch a fleet of autonomous vehicles using the chipmaker’s technology, with services planned initially in Los Angeles and San Francisco next year. Nvidia’s stock edged up 0.4 per cent. A day earlier, chief executive Jensen Huang said he expects demand for artificial intelligence chips to grow to $1 trillion through 2027.Market participants have taken comfort from the historical pattern of US equities recovering relatively quickly from geopolitical conflicts, provided oil prices do not remain elevated for a prolonged period. Despite recent volatility, the S&P 500 remains less than 4 per cent below its record high.In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year US Treasury eased to 4.20 per cent from 4.23 per cent late Monday, though it remains well above the 3.97 per cent level seen before the Iran conflict began. Higher yields have raised expectations that the Federal Reserve may delay interest rate cuts, as rising oil prices could add to inflationary pressures. The Fed is scheduled to announce its next policy decision on Wednesday, and traders see virtually no chance of a rate cut, according to CME Group data.Elsewhere, global markets showed mixed trends. European indices moved higher after a varied close in Asia, where stocks gained 0.8 per cent in London but slipped 0.9 per cent in Shanghai.
