'Experts should decide': LDF govt on Sabarimala women entry; BJP demands apology

NEW DELHI: Kerala minister VN Vasavan on Saturday said the CPM-led LDF government continues to stand by the affidavit it filed in the Supreme Court in 2007 on the Sabarimala women’s entry issue, while accusing the BJP of being responsible for the 2018 verdict allowing women of menstruating age into the shrine.Responding to queries on the affidavit to be filed before a nine-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, Vasavan said the government’s position remains unchanged — that the question of allowing women of menstruating age to enter the Sabarimala temple should be decided by experts in ritualistic matters, news agency PTI reported.“We had stated in our 2007 affidavit that the matter should be determined by experts in ritualistic traditions. We continue to maintain that stand,” the minister said.He clarified that the Supreme Court has not sought the state government’s position on women’s entry at present, but has asked for clarification on certain constitutional questions. The state has entrusted the Advocate General and constitutional experts to submit its response before the court, he added.Vasavan also blamed lawyers associated with the BJP for triggering the legal battle that led to the Supreme Court’s 2018 verdict permitting women of all ages to enter the hill shrine.“It was young lawyers linked to the BJP who approached the Supreme Court and later hailed the verdict as historic. Now they are taking a different stand,” he alleged. The minister rejected allegations that the LDF government had taken special interest in facilitating women’s entry into the temple following the 2018 ruling, saying the state had only implemented the Supreme Court’s order.“If the apex court gives a verdict, how can we oppose it? The women’s entry was the decision of the Supreme Court,” he said. The 2018 ruling sparked widespread protests across Kerala, and the Supreme Court is currently hearing petitions seeking a review of the verdict.Meanwhile, CPM general secretary MA Baby said the LDF government had implemented the court’s directive in 2018 as it was legally bound to do so.“At that time, there was hardly any political party that did not welcome the verdict. Later, some of them changed their stand,” he said, adding that the court itself is now reconsidering the earlier judgment. He also said that when issues involving religious traditions are examined, the views of ritual experts and social reformers acceptable to the public could also be considered. On the other hand, BJP state general secretary MT Ramesh claimed the Kerala government’s fresh affidavit amounted to an admission of its earlier mistake.“The BJP demands that the state government apologise to Ayyappa devotees,” he said, questioning why the government had changed its stance after strongly supporting reforms in 2018.Ramesh further alleged that more than 10,000 cases were registered against people who participated in protests during the agitation over the Sabarimala issue and demanded that these cases be withdrawn in light of the government’s new position.

An unholy havoc? Swami Avimukteshwaranand & his coronation with controversy | India News

An unholy havoc? Swami Avimukteshwaranand & his coronation with controversy

Few controversies capture the complex overlap of faith, law and politics in India as vividly as the storm now surrounding Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati from Jyotish Peeth in Uttarakhand’s Joshimath. In recent weeks, the seer has found himself at the centre of a political and legal storm that stretches from allegations under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act to a decades old dispute over who has the right to call himself the Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath.

Shankaracharya Controversy | Avimukteshwaranand Booked Under POCSO | Is Sanatan Under Fire? | Mantra

For many followers of Sanatan Dharm, the position of Shankaracharya is among the most revered spiritual roles in Hindu tradition. Yet today, the “legitimacy” of Avimukteshwaranand’s claim to that title is being questioned in courtrooms, debated in political circles and argued over within the saint community itself. The controversy has also deepened fault lines in Uttar Pradesh politics, with the ruling establishment appearing divided and opposition parties framing the dispute as an attack on a Hindu religious figure.

Shankaracharya-Gfx7

Four peethas

Who was Adi Shankaracharya?

To understand the significance of the title Shankaracharya, one must return to the figure who created the institution.Adi Shankaracharya was a philosopher and spiritual reformer who lived in the eighth century. At a time when Hindu traditions were fragmented into numerous sects and ritual practices, Shankaracharya sought to revive a unified philosophical vision. His central teaching was Advaita Vedanta, which holds that the individual soul and the universal reality are ultimately the same.

Shankaracharya-Gfx3

Adi Shankracharya

According to Advaita, the world of differences is a result of ignorance, and true knowledge reveals the unity of existence. To preserve this philosophical tradition, Shankaracharya established four monastic centres across India. Each was meant to guide spiritual learning in a different region.

Shankaracharya-Gfx6

Philosophy of Shankaracharya

The four peethas of Shankaracharya

The four traditional Shankaracharya seats are spread across the country:

  • Jyotirmath (Jyotish Peeth) in Uttarakhand representing the northern region
  • Sringeri Sharada Peeth in Karnataka representing the south
  • Govardhan Math in Puri representing the east
  • Dwarka Sharada Peeth in Gujarat representing the west

Each peeth is associated with a particular Veda and has its own line of succession.

Shankaracharya-Gfx8

The four mathas

The head of each institution is called a Shankaracharya.Unlike many religious positions, the title is not granted by the state. It is traditionally decided within the monastic order based on scholarship, spiritual discipline and acceptance among senior monks.Because there is no single central authority governing all four seats, disagreements over succession sometimes occur. But why is Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati suddenly making headlines? The answer appears to lie in three parallel developments – a POCSO case was registered against him; the unresolved dispute over the Jyotirmath Shankaracharya seat; the institution’s long-running succession battles.

The first layer: Sexual exploitation charge

The latest controversy erupted after a special POCSO court in Prayagraj directed the police to register a case against Avimukteshwaranand and his disciple Swami Mukundanand Giri. The complaint alleged that two minor boys were sexually exploited at the seer’s camp during the 2025 Magh Mela and Maha Kumbh.Acting on the court’s directions, the Jhunsi police registered an FIR invoking multiple sections of the POCSO Act along with provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).The complainant in the case is Ashutosh Brahmachari Maharaj, who is also associated with litigation in the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Eidgah dispute.Avimukteseshwaranand, however, has categorically denied the accusations, calling them fabricated.

Magh mela row

Another episode that intensified the controversy took place earlier this year during the Magh Mela in Prayagraj.Magh Mela is an annual Hindu religious gathering held in Prayagraj during the Hindu month of Magh (January–February).Devotees take ritual baths at the sacred confluence called the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers meet. The fair attracts millions of pilgrims, saints and ascetics, and is considered a smaller annual counterpart of the larger Kumbh Mela.Avimukteshwaranand claimed he was prevented from taking a holy dip at the Sangam during Mauni Amavasya, which is a sacred Hindu new moon day in the month of Magh when devotees observe maun (silence) and take ritual baths at holy riversHe alleged that the administration stopped his palanquin procession and insulted his followers. The authorities denied the allegation.Officials said the issue was not about preventing the ritual bath but about crowd management. During peak bathing days, they said, large processions or vehicles are restricted to prevent stampede-like situations. The dispute escalated into a protest by the seer, who staged a sit-in at the mela site and later left without taking the ritual dip.The episode quickly became political, with opposition leaders accusing the government of disrespecting a Hindu spiritual leader.According to the seer, the two minor boys mentioned in the sexual exploitation complaint never entered his gurukul and were actually students of a school in Hardoi. Their school records, he claimed, were already submitted in court. He has also said that he will cooperate fully with the investigation and does not fear arrest. In a public statement, he questioned why alleged evidence such as a purported CD has not been made public. He insisted that CCTV cameras around his camp would reveal the truth. The seer has gone further, accusing certain individuals of trying to malign Hindu institutions from within.Meanwhile, the police have begun a preliminary probe and said that electronic and digital evidence will be examined.

A dramatic twist with attack on complainant

The controversy took another dramatic turn when the complainant claimed he was attacked on a train while travelling to Prayagraj to submit evidence in court.Ashutosh Brahmachari alleged that an unidentified man tried to assault him with a sharp object and cut his nose, supposedly for a reward allegedly announced by one of the seer’s followers.

Police have registered a separate FIR in connection with the incident and said the matter is under investigation.Avimukteshwaranand has again dismissed the claim as suspicious and questioned how such an attack could occur in a train compartment without witnesses.

The second layer: Dispute over the title

While the POCSO case has brought immediate attention, Avimukteshwaranand’s claim to the title of Shankaracharya has been under dispute for years. At the centre of the issue is the Jyotirmath or Jyotish Peeth, one of the four monastic seats established centuries ago by the philosopher saint Adi Shankaracharya. These institutions are among the most important spiritual centres in Hinduism.Avimukteshwaranand declared himself Shankaracharya in 2022 after the death of his guru, Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati. However, his coronation was challenged and the matter reached the Supreme Court.

Shankaracharya-Gfx5

Swami Avimukteshwaranand

The top court stayed the formal coronation ceremony, citing an earlier order that prohibited appointments to the seat while the dispute was pending. This legal situation created an unusual scenario. While the coronation was halted, the court did not explicitly prohibit the use of the title in every context.Avimukteshwaranand’s supporters argue that the stay applies only to the formal installation ceremony and not to the use of the title itself. However, authorities at the Magh Mela in Prayagraj issued him a notice asking why he continues to describe himself as Shankaracharya despite the court’s order. The dispute is still unresolved.

Monk vs monk

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has stated that no individual is above the law and that constitutional propriety must be respected. He also appeared to question the legitimacy of anyone claiming the Shankaracharya title without proper recognition. The issue escalated further after the UP chief minister issued a stern warning against “Kaal Nemi-like forces”. Kalnemi is a demon (asura) mentioned in the Ramayana, known mainly for his role in trying to deceive Hanuman during the war between Rama and Ravana. Without taking anyone’s name, the chief minister said that under the pretext of dharma, these forces are “conspiring to weaken” it. He then cautioned the followers of Sanatan Dharma to be vigilant against them.“Ek yogi ke liye, sanyasi ke liye, sant ke liye, dharm aur rashtra se badhkar kuchh nahin ho sakta. Uski vyaktigat property kuchh nahi hoti hai, dharm aur rashtra hi uska swabhiman hai. Aise kayi Kalnemi honge jo dharma ki aad mein Sanatan Dharm ko kamzor karne ki saazish rach rahe honge. Humein unse sawadhan hona hoga, satarka rehna hoga,” Adityanath said during a pran pratishtha ceremony in Haryana.(For a yogi, a renunciate, a saint, nothing can be greater than dharma and the nation. He has no personal property; dharma and the nation alone are his self-respect. There may be many such Kālnemis who, under the guise of dharma, are plotting to weaken the Sanatan Dharma. We must remain cautious and vigilant against them).Responding to Yogi Adityanath’s “Kal nemi” remark, Swami Avimukteshwaranand said the chief minister should refrain from making rhetorical statements and instead address what he described as the injustice done to him.“Chief minister Yogi should not become a “bayaan veer”. His position has been compromised by his own officials, who have left him in a difficult situation. A crime has been committed against me and he should take cognisance of it. The notice issued against me appears to be driven by malice,” the seer said.He added that the government should focus on addressing the alleged wrongdoing rather than making public statements. “For twelve years he has been in power, yet cow slaughter has not been stopped. He too must answer for that. The people of the country now know who the real ‘Kalnemi’ is,” he said.Expressing anger over the conduct of the Magh Mela administration, Avimukteshwaranand said he had been attending the fair for nearly four decades and had never faced such treatment.“I have been coming to the Magh Mela for 40 years. Earlier we were allotted camps. If the administration wishes, they can even uproot the camp now. We are already sitting on the roadside,” he said.Criticising the government’s stance, he added that while the chief minister speaks about “real and fake Sanatan”, it is the government that enjoys power and authority.“We are not enjoying comfort. They are the ones occupying the seat of power. Instead of making statements, the government should examine what actually happened and decide who committed the wrongdoing,” he said, adding that merely suspending a few police personnel would not resolve the issue.

Controversy turns political

As the war of words erupted, some leaders within the ruling BJP struck a more conciliatory tone.Deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya publicly expressed respect for the seer and said any alleged insult to a saint should be investigated. This difference in tone also led to speculation that the ruling party itself is divided over how to handle the matter.Meanwhile, the opposition leaders have seized the moment.Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP government of insulting the seer after he left the Magh Mela without taking a ritual dip in the Sangam.According to Yadav, the incident hurt the sentiments of the Sanatan community and reflected the arrogance of power. The Congress has also alleged that the monk is being targeted because he has criticised the BJP government on several occasions.

Long shadow of succession dispute

The dispute over the Jyotirmath seat did not begin with Avimukteshwaranand. In fact, it stretches back decades. The seat itself remained vacant for nearly 168 years after the death of Swami Ramakrishna Tirtha in the 18th century. In 1941, the Shankaracharyas of other peeths persuaded Swami Brahmananda Saraswati to take the position, restoring the lineage. But after his death in 1953, disagreements over succession began.Different disciples and factions supported different claimants, leading to competing declarations of Shankaracharya. In the late twentieth century, the conflict deepened when Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati and Swami Vasudevanand Saraswati both claimed the title. The Allahabad High Court later declined to legally recognise either claimant as the undisputed head of the Jyotirmath peeth. However, Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati continued to be widely regarded as Shankaracharya by his followers and many religious institutions, reflecting the gap that often exists between legal rulings and spiritual acceptance in monastic traditions.

The legacy of Swaroopanand Saraswati

Avimukteshwaranand’s guru, Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati, was himself a controversial figure.A freedom fighter who participated in the Quit India movement, he later became one of the most influential Hindu monks of his time. But he was also known for provocative statements.

Shankaracharya-Gfx4

Swami Swaroopanand

He criticised the worship of Sai Baba and accused organisations like Iskcon of “misleading” Hindus. His comments often triggered debate within religious and political circles.Interestingly, Avimukteshwaranand inherited both his guru’s position and the controversies surrounding it.

Why the title matters so much

For many Hindus, the Shankaracharyas represent custodians of scriptural tradition and philosophical thought.Their authority comes not from political power but from their role in preserving centuries old teachings. They often guide religious debates, interpret scriptures and influence major ritual practices. As a result, disputes over the title carry deep symbolic weight. When a succession is contested, it is not just an administrative disagreement. It becomes a question of legitimacy within a sacred lineage.

The raging controversy

The present situation surrounding Avimukteshwaranand reflects how complex these issues can become.A criminal investigation, an unresolved succession dispute and purported political rivalry have converged around one figure.Supporters say he is being targeted for speaking out against the government.Critics argue that the law must take its course and that religious titles cannot place anyone above scrutiny. The final word on both the criminal allegations and the Shankaracharya title will likely come from the courts.

PCB mulls legal action after Blessing Muzarabani opts for IPL over PSL: Report | Cricket News

The Pakistan Cricket Board is reportedly considering legal action against Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani after he chose to play in the Indian Premier League with Kolkata Knight Riders instead of fulfilling his contract in the Pakistan Super League.

KKR sign Muzarabani as replacement for Mustafizur

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) roped in Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman who was earlier released from the squad following instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Muzarabani, known for his height and bounce, was quickly signed by the defending champions to strengthen their pace attack for the upcoming season.

Spectators are priority! Here’s what IPL must learn from the SA20 experience

PCB alleges breach of PSL contract

However, the move has angered the PCB as Muzarabani had already been signed by Islamabad United for PKR 11 Million in this PSL season.

Poll

Do you believe that more regulations are needed to manage player contracts between leagues?

According to a report by Geo Super , the Zimbabwean pacer pulled out of the PSL contract after receiving the IPL offer, which the PCB believes could constitute a breach of agreement. The board is now considering taking legal steps to protect the integrity of PSL contracts and prevent similar situations in the future, where players leave the league for other tournaments.

Not the first IPL vs PSL conflict

This is not the first instance of a clash between the IPL and PSL over player availability. In previous seasons, Last season, South Africa pacer Corbin Bosch did the same after being picked as a Diamond Pick by Peshawar Zalmi. He later joined the Mumbai Indians as an injury replacement.

Why Players Choose IPL Over PSL

The Indian Premier League is widely recognized for its global popularity and lucrative rewards, attracting top international players from around the world. Many cricketers often prefer competing in the IPL over the Pakistan Super League due to its significantly higher financial opportunities, larger broadcasting reach, and greater global exposure.

WATCH: MS Dhoni repairs his bat using an electric sander during IPL 2026 practice session

As the mercury rises and the cricketing world turns its gaze toward the summer of 2026, one name continues to dominate the headlines: MS Dhoni. While the veteran wicketkeeper-batter is no stranger to the limelight, his latest appearance at the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) training camp has sent social media into a frenzy. Just days before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 kick-off on March 28, a viral video has emerged showing the 44-year-old taking a hands-on approach to his equipment, proving that even after nearly two decades in the top flight, his dedication to the craft remains as sharp as ever.

Thala’s DIY spirit: MS Dhoni spotted repairing his bat

In a clip shared by the franchise on CSK’s social media handle, Dhoni was seen hunched over his workbench, meticulously using an electric sander to fine-tune his cricket bat. For most modern-day superstars, equipment maintenance is a task delegated to team kit managers or specialist bat doctors. However, ‘Thala’ has always been a man of simple habits and technical curiosity. By personally polishing the blade and adjusting its balance, Dhoni showcased a DIY spirit that resonates deeply with his Captain Cool persona—calm, calculated, and intimately connected to the tools of his trade.

This level of detail isn’t just for show. Reports from the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi, where Dhoni began his pre-season training, suggest he has switched to a lighter 1.23 kg bat this year to combat the express pace of modern T20 bowling. Watching the tournament’s most experienced player—with 278 matches and 5,439 runs to his name—personally sand down his willow is a reminder of why he remains the heartbeat of the Yellow Army. It’s this blend of vintage work ethic and modern tactical adjustment that keeps fans believing he can still deliver those iconic finishing blows.

Last year was a rare low point for the franchise, as they finished at the bottom of the table with only four wins. However, the energy in the 2026 camp feels different. With Ruturaj Gaikwad leading the side and the blockbuster addition of Sanju Samson (traded from Rajasthan Royals), the squad looks rejuvenated. The team is also buoyed by the recent success of Shivam Dube, who played a starring role in India’s back-to-back T20 World Cup triumphs.

The first phase of the IPL 2026 schedule, announced on March 11, sets a challenging path for Chennai:

  • March 30: Away vs Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Guwahati
  • April 3: Home vs Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Chepauk
  • April 5: Away vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)
  • April 11: Home vs Delhi Capitals (DC)

As Dhoni prepares to step onto the field for his 17th IPL season for CSK, he holds the record for the most runs for the franchise . Whether he plays as a specialist finisher or an Impact Player, his presence ensures that the Whistle Podu spirit is stronger than ever. For the CSK faithful, seeing Dhoni repair his own bat isn’t just a viral moment, it’s a signal that the master is ready for one more grand act.

Trump moves to rebuild $1.6 trillion revenue after court setback, fresh probes widen trade action

Trump moves to rebuild $1.6 trillion revenue after court setback, fresh probes widen trade action

The Trump administration has intensified efforts to recoup about $1.6 trillion in tariff revenue lost after the Supreme Court struck down a range of the president’s import duties, with officials turning to new investigations and legal provisions to impose replacement levies, according to news agency AP report.Experts say recovering the revenue–which the White House had counted on to offset the multi-trillion-dollar cost of tax cuts–will be challenging, as the alternative tariff routes involve longer and more complex processes and allow US companies to seek exemptions. It could take months before the revenue impact of the new measures becomes clear.“I wouldn’t bet against this administration being able to get back on paper the same effective tariff rate they had before,” said Elena Patel, co-director of the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center. But the revised strategy will “make it easier for people to contest the tariffs, which is going to put a big asterisk on the revenue until all that is settled.”US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the administration will investigate 16 economies — including the European Union — over whether government subsidies are encouraging excessive factory capacity that disadvantages US manufacturing. The probe will also examine China, South Korea and Japan.A second investigation will examine dozens of countries over whether their failure to ban goods made with forced labour constitutes an unfair trade practice harming the United States. That review will cover the EU and China as well as Mexico, Canada, Australia and Brazil. Both inquiries are being conducted under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act, which requires consultations with targeted countries, public hearings and input from affected industries. Hearings on factory-capacity concerns are scheduled for May 5, while those on forced labour will be held April 28.The approach contrasts with the emergency law Trump used in his first year in office, which enabled him to impose tariffs immediately through executive orders. After the court ruling, the president imposed a 10 per cent tariff on all imports under a separate legal authority, although it can remain in place only for 150 days. He has said the rate could be raised to the maximum 15 per cent, but has not yet done so. Around two dozen US states have already challenged the new tariffs. The administration aims to complete its Section 301 investigations before the temporary duties expire. The effort highlights the growing importance the White House places on tariffs as a revenue source amid projections of large federal budget deficits in the years ahead.Erica York, vice president of federal tax policy at the Tax Foundation, said the first probe covers about 70 per cent of imports, while the second could extend to nearly all of them.“That breadth suggests the goal isn’t to address the issues at hand, but instead to recreate a sweeping tariff tool,” she said.Trump has argued that tariffs can compel foreign countries to help fund US government services, though recent economic studies — including work by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and Harvard University economists — suggest the costs are largely borne by American companies and consumers. In his state of the union address last month, he even presented tariffs as a potential alternative to income tax.The administration is also seeking to use tariff revenues to offset the fiscal impact of tax cuts extended last year. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the legislation could add $4.7 trillion to national debt over a decade, while existing and proposed duties were projected to cover about $3 trillion of that cost. The Supreme Court’s February 20 ruling eliminating emergency tariffs removed an estimated $1.6 trillion in expected revenue over the next decade, the CBO said. Some duties remain in place, including earlier tariffs on China and Canada imposed after previous Section 301 investigations, as well as product-specific levies on steel, lumber and cars. Combined with this year’s temporary 10 per cent duty, they could generate about $668 billion over the next decade, according to the Tax Foundation.“It’s going to take a really big patchwork of these other investigations to make up for the (lost) tariffs,” York said.Analysts say the administration’s reliance on tariffs is unusual compared with previous governments, which generally used them more narrowly to protect specific industries. Trump has also framed tariffs as a tool to encourage manufacturing to return to the United States and as leverage in trade negotiations.“What makes this really different,” said Kent Smetters, executive director of the Penn Wharton Budget Model, “it is really the first time tariffs have been mainly used as a revenue raiser.”Patel added that raising revenue through legislation would be more predictable. Laws like Section 301 are typically intended to address targeted trade policy concerns rather than broad fiscal objectives.“It’s not supposed to be there to raise revenue,” she said. “If we want to raise revenue through tariffs, then Congress should impose a broad based tariff.”
