‘Bahut dar lag raha hai’: Lucknow family’s desperate plea in Qatar | Lucknow News

LUCKNOW: A harrowing scene unfolds as a distraught woman exclaims, “Bahut dar lag raha hai!” amidst the cacophony of missile sirens and her four-year-old daughter’s desperate tears. A family from Lucknow, stranded in Qatar, has shared a chilling video with loved ones back home, conveying the terror of being caught in a conflict zone. The woman’s concern is palpable as she expresses concern about the missiles’ interception. Her voice shakes with worry as she tells her husband: “Door hato wahan zor se blast hua hai… saari missiles intercept nahi ho rahi hain. (Stay away. There has been a powerful explosion. Not all missiles are being intercepted)”.

Her daughter’s heartbreaking cries echo in the background, amplifying the tension and underscoring her desperate plea for safety. The family’s experience is a sobering illustration of how quickly circumstances can escalate, leaving one feeling vulnerable and anxious. “We were planning to visit Lucknow after almost one year for Holi. Everything was in place until the war broke out,” said the 42-year-old woman, a software engineer in Qatar. Talking to TOI over the phone, she said: “The constant barrage of missiles is incredibly unsettling, making it impossible to catch a wink of sleep… Every siren feels like a nightmare.” Back home in Lucknow’s Jankipuram, their family is on the edge. “What is happening there? Why isn’t anyone answering? I pray for my kids’ safety. We are not sleeping till they do,” said a 71-year-old grandmother, clutching the doll she bought for her granddaughter. “Praying they are safe, Holi can wait,” she said, her eyes welling up with worry. Explosions are still reported in Bahrain and Qatar, as Iran continues to target Gulf nations with retaliatory strikes. Dubai now has the momentous task of handling tens of thousands of displaced passengers and piecing its network back together while trying to minimise damage to Dubai-bound passenger traffic that represents half the airport’s total. According to a text message shared by the family, the Ministry of Interior has stressed that “the circulation or publication of rumours will constitute a violation subject to legal accountability”. It has urged everyone to “rely solely on authorised official sources for information, in order to safeguard security and public safety”. The UAE’s Ministry of Defence reported that its air defences have intercepted a significant number of threats, including 876 drones, 175 ballistic missiles, and eight cruise missiles, as part of its efforts to protect the country amidst escalating tensions.

Bombay HC says can’t second guess denial of security nod, nixes plea on Cidco bids | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Saturday said it “cannot second guess” denial of security clearance by the Centre on National Security grounds and dismissed 2 interconnected petitions, one of which was by a company in a JV with an Azerbaijan-based entity that had for CIDCO’s road infrastructure project bids worth almost ₹3500 crore in the Navi Mumbai airport influence zone.A Navi Mumbai-based Thakur Infraprojects Private Limited, lead partner of M/s Thakur-EVRASCON JV, filed a petition last year to challenge the requirement of a security clearance after bidding for 2 CIDCO road-infrastructure projects and its “arbitrary” denial by the Centre on geopolitical and national security concerns. The security clearance to EVRASCON, a Baku-based company, was refused by the govt of India, the HC saidThe 2 bids were for roads and bridges over 20 metres wide in 5 town planning schemes in Navi Mumbai worth ₹1,568 crore and ₹1,908 crore each. The HC said once a security nod is denied, it “cannot second-guess the judgment of the Union of India that the purpose identified would violate India’s national security.” “No doubt, the principles of natural justice are sacrosanct; however, national security will take precedence over enjoyment of commercial rights. Prior clearances on ongoing contracts do not create any entitlement to automatic clearance for a subsequent project,” said the judgment pronounced by Justices MS Karnik and Sharmila Deshmukh. The govt of India, in refusing the security clearance, considered Azerbaijan’s stance on the Kashmir issue and its strategic alliance with Pakistan and Turkey, and said, “hence it may not be prudent from a security point of view to get this strategic project executed through a joint venture that has EVRASCON as a partner,” the HC observed. “It is the executive wing and not the judicial wing that has the knowledge of India’s geopolitical relationships to assess if an action is in the interest of India’s national security,” the HC said.Thakur challenged the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) condition of the Centre’s security clearance for the public projects after its JV company was last May declared the lowest bidder in 2 tenders. The security NOC was “contrary to the Notice Inviting Bids” dated 23 July 2024, argued senior counsel CA Sundaram for Thakur arguing against maintainability of CIDCO’s action, which senior counsel Chetan Kapadia justified as being legally mandatory and in the national interest.Last November, the Centre rejected the security clearance after considering the national security aspects and project being in the new airport influence zone, submitted Additional Solicitor General of India Anil Singh.ASG Singh argued that the company invoked constitutional grounds under Article 77—which ensures accountability in govt actions—for the first time, but Sundaram argued it was permissible since security clearance was denied arbitrarily, as the petition pleaded.Justice Karnik, who authored the judgment, said, “In our opinion, the issue of national security is a dynamic concept. It may not be possible to foresee a situation as to what act constitute a threat to the national security. The executive must have the latitude and necessary flexibility to take decisions which are in national interest. We do not intend to put fetters on the decision-making by the executive by going into the dispute as to whether the denial of security clearance was a policy mandating compliance of Article 77 of the Constitution of India in the peculiar facts of this case. The HC said private commercial interest of a foreign entity, a JV partner of the petitioner, against the safety and security of the entire country had to be balanced.“Security and threat perceptions are dynamic in nature. The timing of the clearance sought, the nature of project for which the clearance has been sought, the location of the project for which the clearance has been sought are all crucial and paramount factors which would arise for consideration while taking a decision,” said the HC, adding, “The security clearance is ‘Mandatory Eligibility Criterion’ which the CIDCO rightly insisted the petitioner JV to comply. The HC rejected a plea for a stay of its judgment on Saturday.

Citizen group Impact raises concerns over cooking and food stalls at Carter road promenade | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Impact — a citizens movement for environment and civic issues raised concerns over the continued use of the Carter Road promenade in Bandra for cooking and food stalls, alleging that the activity posed safety risks and obstructed the public walking space. In a letter addressed to the chief executive officer of the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), the group IMPACT said it filed a Right to Information (RTI) application in November 2025, seeking details about the proposed “Fish Food Plaza” at the promenade, and it was still awaiting a response.

The group alleged that open-flame cooking continued to take place at the site, with oil cans stored in the area and chairs placed along the walkway for people to sit and eat, which it said blocked portions of the promenade used by walkers. In the letter, the group claimed that allowing cooking activities on a public promenade violated directions of the Supreme Court of India regarding cooking in public places. The residents also questioned why such a food plaza was permitted at Carter Road, asking whether similar arrangements existed at other prominent seafront promenades such as Marine Drive or Worli Sea Face.

Lakshya Sen delivered a gritty performance to book his place in the final of the All England Open Badminton Championships, becoming only the second Indian shuttler to reach the title clash twice after defeating Canada’s Victor Lai in a demanding semifinal on Saturday. The 24 year old, who had previously reached the final in 2022, battled both a determined opponent and painful blisters on his right toe to seal a 21-16, 18-21, 21-15 victory in a contest that lasted one hour and 37 minutes. Sen’s achievement puts him in rare company alongside his mentor Prakash Padukone. The legendary Indian had reached the final in 1980 and 1981, famously winning the title in his first appearance in the championship match. Saturday’s semifinal turned into a test of stamina and resilience for both players. Sen and Lai were involved in several exhausting rallies, some stretching beyond 50 shots, as neither competitor was willing to give ground. The opening game remained closely contested until the score stood at 17-16 in Sen’s favour. The Indian then shifted gears, reeling off four consecutive points to take the first game. Lai responded strongly in the second game. The Canadian, who holds the distinction of being the first player from Canada to win a medal at the BWF World Championships, moved ahead 11-7 at the mid game interval and maintained his advantage despite Sen drawing level at 16-16 while dealing with blisters. Lai eventually forced the match into a deciding game. In the final game, Sen’s experience began to show. Mixing patience with calculated attacking shots, he built a healthy 15-9 lead. Lai continued to fight back and reduced the deficit to 17-15, but Sen finished strongly, claiming four points in a row to seal his place in the final. In the championship match, Sen will face Lin Chun-Yi of Chinese Taipei. The left handed shuttler, who recently won the India Open, advanced to the final after defeating Thailand’s second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn 21-14, 18-21, 21-16 in a semifinal that lasted one hour and 18 minutes.

Mumbai builder finds extortion note with a live cartridge in car at Versova | Mumbai News

Mumbai: A developer who has been receiving death threats and extortion demands in the name of gangster Chhota Shakeel got another message on Friday where a handwritten note and a live cartridge were left on his car at Versova. The note in Hindi, signed in the name of Chhota Shakeel, warned the next bullet would be fired at his chest if he failed to comply. The developer has also claimed that the threats are linked to a 12-acre redevelopment project in the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) area where construction work is currently underway. He has been receiving threats asking him to pay Rs 50 crore as extortion.

Mumbai: MNS Civic Win, Anti-Conversion Bill, Bridge Project and More

The Versova police and the anti-extortion cell (AEC) of the city crime branch that has been looking into his earlier complaint, are investigating the fresh threat. Friday’s threat assumes significance as it was made immediately after his police protection was withdrawn following an assessment by the police. In the fresh incident, the developer alleged while visiting a project site at Model Town in Andheri West, a note with a live cartridge wrapped inside a chit was found hanging near the rear number plate of his car. The caller has been issuing threats in the name of gangster Chhota Shakeel which is unheard of in recent times, police said. Crime branch officials suspect someone is trying to scare the victim in the name of Shakeel. In a detailed representation addressed to the commissioner of police, the developer has alleged that in Feb 2024 after he received the first threat message, he was granted paid police protection. The protection was granted after a case was registered by the AEC.According to the victim, the protection was discontinued last year, after which he allegedly began receiving fresh threats from international numbers claiming to be associates of Chhota Shakeel. The caller allegedly demanded Rs 50 crore, warning that he and his family would be killed if the amount was not paid. The complainant said he received threatening calls and messages on Dec 27, 2025. On Jan 22, 2026, the caller demanded that he travel to Dubai and pay the extortion amount.Despite the repeated complaints, he alleged that no arrests have been made. An officer has denied that this threat is from Shakeel and said they would soon arrest the culprits behind the threats.
