7 injured as firewalking ritual goes wrong during lunar eclipse at 1,300-year-old Telangana temple

HYDERABAD: A heavy crowd at the Sri Parvathi Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple in Amanagallu village of Vemulapalli mandal, Nalgonda district, led to seven devotees sustaining burn injuries while performing the Agnigundala ritual early on Wednesday morning. While around 1,500 people usually attend the annual ritual, this year the number was reportedly double, as the ceremony took place immediately after the lunar eclipse, or chandra grahanam.Of the seven injured, two women suffered over 35% burn injuries and were shifted to Gandhi Hospital in the city for treatment.“A total of seven were admitted to the hospital this afternoon. Five of them have burns of less than 15% on their hands and legs and will be treated here for the next three to four days. We referred the other two to Gandhi Hospital as they require advanced treatment, which cannot be provided here due to the absence of a dedicated burns ward,” said Dr Upendra Singh, RMO of the Govt General Hospital, Suryapet. He added that the two women transferred to Gandhi Hospital appeared to have sustained more severe injuries in a stampede-like situation near the firewalking area of the temple. The endowment officer (EO) of the temple, which has a history of approximately 1,300 years, said such an incident had never occurred there before.“Normally, around 1,500 people attend the ritual, which is always organised on Holi. But this year, because of chandra grahanam, more devotees visited the temple, resulting in the overcrowding that led to this incident,” said K Mrityunjay Sastry, EO of the temple. He added, “The incident occurred when a woman slipped while devotees were carrying the rath across burning coals, causing several others to fall into the fire.”The sarpanch of Amanagallu village, P Sandeep, said that all the injured are from Bheemaram village and are currently being treated in Suryapet.

Rahul Gandhi: Iran crisis: Rahul Gandhi questions PM Modi’s ‘silence’ on warship sinking in ‘our backyard’ | India News

Iran crisis: Rahul Gandhi questions PM Modi's 'silence' on warship sinking in 'our backyard'

NEW DELHI: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said PM Narendra Modi‘s silence in the wake of “conflict” and the sinking of an Iranian warship showed that the PM had “surrendered strategy sovereignty”. The opposition party also slammed govt for “undoing” the foreign policy painstakingly built over the last seven decades.Rahul said the world had entered a volatile phase and “stormy seas” lay ahead, with oil supplies and 40% of Indian imports transiting through the Strait of Hormuz under threat. “The conflict has reached our backyard, with an Iranian warship sunk in the Indian Ocean. Yet the PM has said nothing. At a moment like this, we need a steady hand at the wheel. Instead, India has a compromised PM who has surrendered our strategic autonomy,” he said.Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the PM’s silence after the sinking of the Iranian ship that was India’s guest showed “Modi government’s reckless abdication of India’s strategic and national interests”. He also questioned the “absence” of maritime rescue and relief when 38 Indian-flagged commercial ships along with 1,100 sailors were stuck in the conflict-hit region. He said the government had also not made public the plan to deal with rising oil prices and limited reserves, especially after agreeing with the US to stop import from Russia. One crore Indians were in Gulf region countries and there were desperate messages from medical students seeking help, he said. “Clearly, Modi’s surrender is both political and moral. It demeans India’s core national interests and destroys our foreign policy carefully built and followed by successive governments over the years,” Kharge said.

T20 World Cup 2026 [WATCH]: Gautam Gambhir makes appearance at Arjun Tendulkar’s wedding

The cricketing world is buzzing with a unique blend of celebration and high-stakes tension. In a moment that perfectly captures the “larger-than-life” nature of Indian cricket, Head Coach Gautam Gambhir was spotted at the wedding of Arjun Tendulkar in Mumbai. The timing of the event has set social media ablaze, occurring just hours before India is scheduled to face England in a blockbuster T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal.

Arjun, the 26-year-old son of legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar, tied the knot with his longtime friend Saaniya Chandhok. Saaniya, the granddaughter of Graviss Group Chairman Ravi Ghai, has been a close associate of the Tendulkar family for years, sharing a particularly tight bond with Arjun’s sister, Sara. The union brings together two prominent families in a ceremony that saw the ‘Who’s Who’ of India’s elite in attendance.

The presence of Gambhir at the nuptials raised eyebrows, but the logistical stars aligned perfectly for the Indian contingent. The wedding was hosted at the very same luxury hotel where the Indian team is currently stationed for their knockout clash against England. This proximity allowed Gambhir and several other members of the squad to pay their respects to the Tendulkar family without disrupting their rigorous pre-match protocols.

Gambhir, known for his stern ‘cricket-first’ demeanor, was seen looking relaxed in traditional Indian attire. It was a rare moment of leisure for the coach, whose team has navigated a turbulent path to the semifinals. India’s journey through the Super 8s was anything but smooth, facing immense pressure in must-win scenarios. However, the Men in Blue rose to the occasion, decisively knocking out the two-time champions to secure their spot in the final four. Gambhir’s presence at the wedding, even briefly, suggests a team culture that remains calm and composed under the looming shadow of a World Cup semi-final.

Arjun’s beginning of a new chapter on and off the field

While the wedding marks a significant personal milestone, Arjun remains a figure of intense sporting interest. After making his Mumbai debut in 2021, the left-arm pacer moved to Goa to seek more consistent opportunities in domestic cricket. His IPL journey has also taken a pivotal turn; after years with the Mumbai Indians (MI), where he claimed three wickets in five appearances, Arjun was traded to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the IPL 2026 season.

As Arjun prepares to don the LSG jersey, his transition to a new franchise mirrors the transition in his personal life. The wedding ceremony served as a brief respite for the cricketing community before the focus shifts back to the 22 yards. With the England semifinal just around the corner, fans are hoping that the positive vibes from the Tendulkar celebrations will translate into a clinical performance on the field.

Mumbai hit by heatwave as max temp touches 38.9°C | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The weather bureau on Thursday issued a heatwave warning—the season’s first—for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar as the city logged the year’s highest maximum temperature at 38.9°C.Immediate relief is unlikely as IMD has issued a “hot and humid” alert for Friday for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad. While temperatures are expected to dip slightly over the weekend to about 35°C, officials cautioned that this may be temporary. Forecast models indicate another sharp rise in daytime temperatures around March 11.IMD scientist Sushma Nair said that the spike in temperatures was owing to an anticyclone over south Gujarat and neighbouring areas that has thrown hot air. She said such spikes are not unusual during the seasonal transition from winter to summer. “With moisture levels in the air still relatively low and dry northerly winds pushing into MMR, brief surges in temperature are common during this period,” she said.As per IMD records, Mumbai had logged its highest ever temperature for the month—41.7°C—on March 28, 1956.A heatwave is declared when temperatures touch 37°C or more for two consecutive days. The city had recorded a daytime temperature of 38.7°C on Wednesday. Thursday’s high, recorded at the Santacruz weather station, was 5.9°C above normal readings. The Colaba observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 36.2°C (3.4°C above normal). Experts said the city likely faced a heatwave on Wednesday too, when a hot and humid warning was issued, but an alert for it was not issued because it didn’t meet IMD’s criteria.Minimum temperatures were also high—the Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded 24°C and 22°C, respectively, around 2°C above normal. Relative humidity logged by the two stations was 55% and 59%, respectively. IMD has forecast that minimum temperatures will continue to hover around 22°C this weekend.

499 runs and 34 sixes later, India beat England to enter T20 World Cup final | Cricket News

TimesofIndia.com in Mumbai: 40 overs, 499 runs, 34 sixes, a last-over finish and the entire Wankhede Stadium on its feet singing “Maa Tujhe Salaam” in unison. One could not have asked for a more entertaining game of T20 cricket as India held their nerves to beat England by just seven runs and set a date with New Zealand in the summit clash of the 2026 T20 World Cup.The hosts had long yearned for a perfect game in the tournament. While this win too was far from it, it was enough for India to reach their fourth straight white-ball final. The bowlers had the cushion of runs and even when they leaked plenty, their early intent to look for wickets, something they could not do against the West Indies in Kolkata, was evident.Varun Chakravarthy was creamed for three sixes by Jacob Bethell but he responded by taking Jos Buttler’s wicket. Axar Patel was dispatched for back-to-back sixes by Tom Banton but the wily customer had the last laugh, taking the right-hander’s wicket off the third delivery. Before the emphatic response by the two spinners, India broke England’s back during the powerplay of the huge chase by picking three wickets: Phil Salt, Harry Brook and Jos Buttler.

Hardik Pandya struck off the first delivery of his spell and Jasprit Bumrah did the same. The two demonstrated their experience. The former achieved good movement in his first over while Bumrah stunned Brook with a slower ball, and then Axar took a blinder to dismiss the England skipper. When it looked like India were firmly in command, Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks, England’s best cricketer in this tournament, combined to put India under pressure. But even as England got close, it was wickets that kept India in control. Another one came just when they badly needed it and it again took a spectacular effort from Axar and Shivam Dube.Arshdeep was reintroduced to break the momentum after the spinners lacked control and the left-armer bowled three wides on the trot. His last legal delivery was set to go for at least a boundary before Axar pulled off another stunning effort, with Shivam Dube completing the relay catch to get the Wankhede roaring again.

Bethell special

The pitch was a paradise for batting and while every bowler struggled to contain the batters, Varun’s meek surrender raised significant concerns. Throughout his four-over spell, the mystery spinner lacked control and penetration, consistently erring with shorter lengths. The true bounce allowed batters to comfortably sit back on the back foot and muscle deliveries into the stands without course correction. He leaked 64 runs from four overs, his most expensive outing in the format and the second most expensive in the tournament’s history.

With Bethell keeping England hanging by a thread, the required run rate boiled down to 61 from the last four overs. With two southpaws in the middle, India made the bold call to bowl Arshdeep early. While he kept things quiet initially, he conceded a six and a boundary off the last two deliveries, resulting in 45 runs needed from the last three overs.Arshdeep was reintroduced to break some momentum after spinners lacked control and after the left-armer bowled three wides on the trot, his last legal delivery was set to go for at least a boundary before Axar pulled off another stunning catch, with a neat assist from Shivam Dube, to get the Wankhede roaring again. Magical Bumrah

Then came the over that could well have decided which way the match was headed as Surya threw his last roll of the dice and handed Bumrah the ball to bowl the 18th over. And he delivered.

Six deliveries around the toes resulted in only six runs, making the equation 39 off the last two overs. Hardik was on top of his mark to bowl the crucial over. Even after conceding a six off the first ball, he took the wicket of Sam Curran and ended the over with a dot, leaving Shivam Dube 30 runs to defend off the last six balls.Wankhede was on its feet. A mini conference was underway between Dube, Hardik and Surya and the tension was palpable. Centurion Bethell was on strike and his first hit went straight to Pandya, patrolling the long-off. England needed Bethell at the strike and the youngster tried to steal a second but Pandya’s rocket arm caught the 22-year-old short, ending England’s hope. Archer kept the scoreboard interesting with three sixes but it was too late as England fell short by seven runs.

Another Samson masterclass

The 14th over of the Indian innings was the only one in which England did not concede a boundary. On an evening when many boundaries and sixes were hit, Will Jacks’ third over was an anomaly. Boundaries and sixes flew thick and fast in the overs bowled around the off-spinner as India, riding on another Sanju Samson masterclass, demolished England by posting a mammoth total, batting them out of the game before they even came out to bat.

The bounce was true and with nothing happening off the surface or in the air, India feasted with a clinical batting display. It was Samson again who put on a real show of attractive strokeplay to score back-to-back half-centuries. If the unbeaten 97 in the stiff chase against West Indies at the Eden Gardens was a picture of calm, the 89 at Wankhede had domination written all over it. He never looked to slow down, even when Abhishek Sharma threw his wicket away to Jacks’ off-spin, and the manner in which he took down the predictable Jofra Archer was pure class.Samson did get a reprieve on 15 when Harry Brook dropped a dolly at mid-on off Jofra Archer’s bowling, but he made the most of it and from there onwards played a chanceless knock.England played the matchups card well but the bowlers’ execution was far from satisfactory. All of them had an economy rate in double digits, with Archer leaking 61 runs in his four overs. The 30-year-old kept digging in short to Samson, who came well prepared and stood deep in his crease to counter the extra bounce. The only occasion when the right-armer went a bit full brought an opportunity, but Harry Brook missed the sitter, handing the in-form Samson an early life. Samson then added 74 runs from the next 35 deliveries he faced.India were cruising and Wankhede was roaring. The chants of “Sanju Samson” grew louder with every big hit and Ishan Kishan ensured the momentum did not dip from the other end as he smashed an 18-ball 39. When the dangerous southpaw was dismissed in the tenth over, India controlled the situation at 117/2. Since spin was expected to play a part, they demoted Surya and sent Shivam Dube to pile on more misery on the opposition.

Poll

Who was the standout player of the match for India?

Dube did not disappoint. Even after Samson was dismissed 11 short of a well-deserved hundred, he aced his role to perfection by using his long levers to full effect and kept 250 within reach. For Surya, it was another ordinary outing in a knockout or must-win fixture of a multilateral tournament but Hardik Pandya covered up for the Indian skipper’s early departure as both he, and, later, Tilak Varma played strong cameos to push the side over the 250-run mark.India’s innings mirrored their training session two days before the match as the batters operated with significant intent. The Men in Blue hit 19 sixes and the sixathon made them the only side in men’s T20 history to have six totals in excess of 250 in the format. India have already hit 88 sixes in the tournament, the most in a single edition, and they are set to flirt with the century mark when they take the field in the title clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.Brief score:India: 253 for seven in 20 overs (Sanju Samson 89, Shivam Dube 43, Ishan Kishan 39; Will Jacks 2/40, Adil Rashid 2/41).England: 246 for 7 in 20 overs (Jacob Bethell 105; Jasprit Bumrah 1/33, Hardik Pandya 2/38).

Us Ukraine Drone Assistance: ‘Protection against ‘Shaheds’’: US asked Ukraine for help against Iranian drones in Middle East, says Zelenskyy

‘Protection against 'Shaheds'’: US asked Ukraine for help against Iranian drones in Middle East, says Zelenskyy

File photo: Ukrainian President Zelenskyy

The United States has asked Ukraine to help counter Iranian drone attacks in the Middle East, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday, adding that Kyiv would provide technical expertise and support while ensuring its own defences remain intact.“We received a request from the United States for specific support in protection against ‘shaheds’ in the Middle East region,” Zelenskyy wrote on X, referring to Iranian-designed drones that have been widely used in attacks. “I gave instructions to provide the necessary means and ensure the presence of Ukrainian specialists who can guarantee the required security,” he added.Ukraine has faced frequent attacks by such drones during Russia’s invasion, prompting Kyiv to develop relatively inexpensive interceptor drones designed to destroy incoming aerial threats mid-air. Zelenskyy said Ukraine would assist partners that help ensure its own security, adding: “Ukraine helps partners who help ensure our security and protect the lives of our people.”

Shahed-136 and Shahed-131

The Shahed-136 is an Iranian-designed loitering munition, often described as a “suicide drone”, developed by Iran’s defence industry and widely used in regional conflicts. It is designed to loiter over a target area before diving into its objective and detonating on impact. The Shahed-131 is a smaller variant of the Shahed-136 and serves a similar loitering munition role. It is lighter, carries a smaller warhead and has a shorter operational range, typically estimated at several hundred kilometres.

Zelenskyy indicated that Kyiv could provide expertise and interceptor drones to help defend military bases and civilian infrastructure in Gulf countries facing Iranian attacks. However, he stressed that any assistance would be conditional. “Of course, any assistance we provide will only be on the condition that it does not weaken our own defence in Ukraine and that it serves as an investment in our diplomatic capabilities,” he said. The Ukrainian leader has also proposed a possible swap arrangement with US allies in the Gulf, offering interceptor drones in exchange for additional Patriot air defence missiles needed to counter Russian ballistic attacks, reported BBC.

What happens if India vs England semi-final washes out? ICC rules explained | Cricket News

Team India at Wankhede stadium (PTI Photo)

NEW DELHI: The defending champions India take on England at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday in the second semi-final of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The winner of the contest will then face New Zealand in the summit clash in Ahmedabad on Sunday, after the Kiwis defeated South Africa by nine wickets in the first semi-final in Kolkata on Wednesday.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!While the weather forecast currently looks clear, fans remain cautious after two earlier matches in the tournament were washed out due to rain, raising concerns about what could happen if the weather disrupts the knockout match.

Why India vs England semi-final match will be a nightmare for bowlers | T20 World Cup 2026

To prevent chaos in the crucial stage, the International Cricket Council has scheduled a reserve day for both semi-finals. If rain or bad weather stops play on the scheduled day, the match will either continue or restart on the following day, ensuring that every effort is made to produce a result. There is also additional time built into the playing schedule. The semi-finals have up to 90 minutes of extra time on the main day, while the reserve day allows up to 120 minutes of extra play if required. For the final, both the main day and the reserve day have 120 minutes of additional time available to complete the match.

Mumbai Weather Forecast at Match Time Today

Mumbai Weather

For a valid result to be declared, each team must bat at least 10 overs. If rain prevents that from happening on the main day, the match will resume on the reserve day from the exact point where it stopped rather than starting from scratch. However, if the game still cannot be completed even after the reserve day, the rules favour the team that finished higher in the Super 8 stage. This scenario could prove tricky for India. India finished second in their Super 8 group, while England topped theirs with three wins. That means if the India versus England semi-final is completely washed out, England would advance to the final. The tournament final is scheduled for March 8 in Ahmedabad, with March 9 kept as the reserve day.

Fans go wild as Sanju Samson’s blazing knock powers India into T20 World Cup 2026 final after thrilling win over England

India booked their place in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after defeating England by 7 runs in a breathtaking second semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. In what turned out to be one of the most electrifying contests of the tournament, India posted a mammoth 253/7 before holding their nerve to restrict England to 246/7 despite a stunning century from Jacob Bethell. Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson starred with a blistering knock and was deservedly named Player of the Match.

Sanju Samson leads India’s batting carnage

After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, India came out with aggressive intent and immediately put pressure on the English bowlers. The innings was anchored by Samson, who delivered one of the finest knocks of the tournament. The right-hander smashed 89 runs off just 42 balls, striking 8 fours and 7 sixes, dismantling the England attack with elegant strokeplay and fearless hitting.

Abhishek Sharma provided a brief start with 9 off 7 balls, but it was the explosive stand between Samson and Ishan Kishan that set the tone. Kishan played a fiery cameo, scoring 39 runs off 18 deliveries, including 4 fours and 2 sixes, helping India accelerate during the powerplay.

Although Suryakumar Yadav managed only 11 off 6 balls, the middle order ensured the momentum never dropped. Shivam Dube delivered another impactful performance, hammering 43 off 25 balls with four sixes, while Hardik Pandya provided the late fireworks with 27 off just 12 balls.

The final overs proved devastating for England as Tilak Varma smashed 21 runs off only 7 balls, including three towering sixes, pushing India past the 250 mark.

Among England’s bowlers, Will Jacks and Adil Rashid picked up two wickets each, conceding 40 and 41 runs respectively, but the rest of the attack struggled against India’s relentless hitting. Jofra Archer endured a difficult outing, conceding 61 runs in his four overs.

Jacob Bethell’s century keeps England alive

Chasing a daunting 254-run target, England needed a flying start but lost Phil Salt early for 5 runs. Jos Buttler attempted to counterattack with 25 off 17 balls, but India kept striking at key moments to maintain pressure.

However, young batter Bethell produced a sensational innings that almost turned the game on its head. Bethell smashed a magnificent 105 off 48 balls, laced with 8 fours and 7 sixes, and kept England firmly in the chase with fearless hitting.

He received support from Jacks, who scored 35 off 20 balls, while Tom Banton added a quick 17 off 5 deliveries, briefly swinging momentum England’s way. Even Archer contributed a late blitz of 19 off just 4 balls, hitting three sixes to push the match into a tense finish.

Despite the onslaught, India’s bowlers held their nerve in the closing overs. Pandya was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 2 wickets for 38 runs, while Jasprit Bumrah delivered a disciplined spell of 1 for 33 in his four overs.

With England needing big hits in the final overs, India managed to execute their plans under pressure. Key wickets at crucial moments ensured the required rate kept climbing, and England ultimately finished on 246/7, falling just 7 runs short in a thrilling contest.

The victory sends India into the T20 World Cup 2026 final, where they will look to lift the trophy after producing one of the most dominant batting displays of the tournament. Samson’s match-defining innings proved to be the difference in the end, earning him the Player of the Match award and propelling India one step closer to global glory.
