Thane: The Thane Police Commissionerate arrested 227 Bangladeshi nationals in 2025 as authorities stepped up action against illegal immigrants living in the city without valid documentation. According to data from Thane City Police, they registered 116 cases against undocumented Bangladeshi nationals last year and cracked every single one of them, achieving a 100% detection rate. “The figures signal a sharp escalation in enforcement that officials say is driven by mounting concerns over national security and local law and order,” said Thane police commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre. The crackdown gained fresh momentum following a high-profile incident in which a previously apprehended illegal immigrant was linked to the attack on a Bollywood actor. The case brought the issue of undocumented residents sharply into focus and prompted a tightening of surveillance across all police stations in the commissionerate.Dumbre has since directed every station, including areas of Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and other parts of the city, to maintain heightened vigilance. “We urge citizens to verify credentials before renting property or hiring domestic workers,” Dumbre said, warning that many undocumented migrants rely on local assistance to obtain forged govt identity documents.Authorities issued 284 restriction orders as part of the administrative machinery underpinning the drive. Of these, 271 deportation orders were successfully executed. Only 13 cases were pending end-Dec — a number officials expect to clear soon. Officials say enforcement will continue unabated. “Those found violating immigration laws will face strict legal action and immediate deportation,” a senior officer said, adding that the pace of new registrations is expected to remain high as ongoing investigations mature. “The drive forms part of a broader national effort to identify and remove undocumented foreign nationals, with Maharashtra emerging as a key front in that push,” said the official.

TimesofIndia.com in Ahmedabad: On Saturday, most eyes were glued to the net where Abhishek Sharma was batting during India’s training session on the eve of the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand. Facing a mix of throwdown specialists and net bowlers, Abhishek batted for nearly 30 minutes and was watched closely by batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Off-spin was the flavour and there were plenty of inside-out hits, which grew cleaner as he settled into the crease.

Abhishek’s father and childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma, was stationed far from the action but had the best possible vantage point to watch his son go through the paces one last time before the big night. The father wasn’t worried and kept craning his neck in the direction where the ball was hit. Every sweet connection was met with an assuring nod. Unbeknownst to his son, the father, his biggest cheerleader, supporter and critic, was quietly in attendance to offer support during the toughest phase of his career.

“Bahut time baad net dekh raha hu, kal sab accha hoga team bhi World Cup jeetegi (I am seeing his net after a very long time. Everything will be good tomorrow and the team will win the World Cup),” he quipped.“I am sitting there,” he said, pointing towards a hospitality box above, “but the real fun is to watch the match from here. I watched all his early days of cricket from near the boundary ropes, it was fun,” added the father.Without his spectacles, he couldn’t observe the proceedings as closely as he would have liked but the sound of the shots was assuring enough to bring a smile to his face. When Abhishek finished his hit, coach Gambhir summoned him and the two had an extended chat lasting nearly twenty minutes. It was an animated pep talk, highlighted by fingers pointing towards different parts of the ground and plenty of reassurance.

Father Rajkumar watched the conversation and, the moment it ended, net bowlers and onlookers mobbed Abhishek with requests for selfies and autographs. He obliged them all and the father allowed his son the required space before walking towards him.“Usko bata to deta hu mai aaya hu (laughs) [Let me tell him that I am here],” he said. The father and son met and had a brief chat, mostly about cricket and batting, before more “Abhishek sir, Abhishek sir” requests interrupted the moment.Abhishek requested a support staff member to take his gear to the dressing room and the freed-up left-hander ensured he signed every piece of paper that came his way through the security fence.

It has been a difficult tournament for the World No. 1, as he is yet to fire on all cylinders and has struggled against off-spin. Teams have cracked his code and he scored his first World Cup runs in his fourth innings after three ducks. The stomach infection that forced him into hospital did not help and returning to fluent ways has been a struggle since then. The batter who demolished the opposition in the fixtures preceding the tournament has become a walking wicket for opponents. All they need to do is deploy an off-spinner. Even a part-timer would do.After tallying 89 runs in eight games, the youngster will need to take a fresh guard and forget everything that has happened so far. For some batters, it is about getting two sweet hits out of the way before normalcy returns. Abhishek belongs to that school of batsmanship and he does not need to look too far back for inspiration. In the game against Zimbabwe, the opener attempted to spend time in the middle and, while the lack of spin in the powerplay was helpful, his patience also paid off.

“Dua (prayer),” was the word the father repeatedly used when he met several greeters near the sightscreen. He also had a brief interaction with ICC Chairman Jay Shah, who was inspecting preparations for the big final at the Narendra Modi Stadium with other officials of the global cricket body. When the team returned to the dressing room and the ground was vacated for Sunday’s musical performances, father Rajkumar left the premises with a prayer that his son would return to dominating ways when he watches from the third-tier hospitality box.
LUCKNOW: A harrowing scene unfolds as a distraught woman exclaims, “Bahut dar lag raha hai!” amidst the cacophony of missile sirens and her four-year-old daughter’s desperate tears. A family from Lucknow, stranded in Qatar, has shared a chilling video with loved ones back home, conveying the terror of being caught in a conflict zone. The woman’s concern is palpable as she expresses concern about the missiles’ interception. Not all missiles are being intercepted)”.

Her daughter’s heartbreaking cries echo in the background, amplifying the tension and underscoring her desperate plea for safety. The family’s experience is a sobering illustration of how quickly circumstances can escalate, leaving one feeling vulnerable and anxious. “We were planning to visit Lucknow after almost one year for Holi. Everything was in place until the war broke out,” said the 42-year-old woman, a software engineer in Qatar. Talking to TOI over the phone, she said: “The constant barrage of missiles is incredibly unsettling, making it impossible to catch a wink of sleep… Every siren feels like a nightmare.” Back home in Lucknow’s Jankipuram, their family is on the edge. “What is happening there? Why isn’t anyone answering? I pray for my kids’ safety. We are not sleeping till they do,” said a 71-year-old grandmother, clutching the doll she bought for her granddaughter. “Praying they are safe, Holi can wait,” she said, her eyes welling up with worry. Explosions are still reported in Bahrain and Qatar, as Iran continues to target Gulf nations with retaliatory strikes. Dubai now has the momentous task of handling tens of thousands of displaced passengers and piecing its network back together while trying to minimise damage to Dubai-bound passenger traffic that represents half the airport’s total. According to a text message shared by the family, the Ministry of Interior has stressed that “the circulation or publication of rumours will constitute a violation subject to legal accountability”. It has urged everyone to “rely solely on authorised official sources for information, in order to safeguard security and public safety”. The UAE’s Ministry of Defence reported that its air defences have intercepted a significant number of threats, including 876 drones, 175 ballistic missiles, and eight cruise missiles, as part of its efforts to protect the country amidst escalating tensions.
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Saturday said it “cannot second guess” denial of security clearance by the Centre on National Security grounds and dismissed 2 interconnected petitions, one of which was by a company in a JV with an Azerbaijan-based entity that had for CIDCO’s road infrastructure project bids worth almost ₹3500 crore in the Navi Mumbai airport influence zone.A Navi Mumbai-based Thakur Infraprojects Private Limited, lead partner of M/s Thakur-EVRASCON JV, filed a petition last year to challenge the requirement of a security clearance after bidding for 2 CIDCO road-infrastructure projects and its “arbitrary” denial by the Centre on geopolitical and national security concerns. The security clearance to EVRASCON, a Baku-based company, was refused by the govt of India, the HC saidThe 2 bids were for roads and bridges over 20 metres wide in 5 town planning schemes in Navi Mumbai worth ₹1,568 crore and ₹1,908 crore each. The HC said once a security nod is denied, it “cannot second-guess the judgment of the Union of India that the purpose identified would violate India’s national security.” “No doubt, the principles of natural justice are sacrosanct; however, national security will take precedence over enjoyment of commercial rights. Prior clearances on ongoing contracts do not create any entitlement to automatic clearance for a subsequent project,” said the judgment pronounced by Justices MS Karnik and Sharmila Deshmukh. The govt of India, in refusing the security clearance, considered Azerbaijan’s stance on the Kashmir issue and its strategic alliance with Pakistan and Turkey, and said, “hence it may not be prudent from a security point of view to get this strategic project executed through a joint venture that has EVRASCON as a partner,” the HC observed. “It is the executive wing and not the judicial wing that has the knowledge of India’s geopolitical relationships to assess if an action is in the interest of India’s national security,” the HC said.Thakur challenged the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) condition of the Centre’s security clearance for the public projects after its JV company was last May declared the lowest bidder in 2 tenders. The security NOC was “contrary to the Notice Inviting Bids” dated 23 July 2024, argued senior counsel CA Sundaram for Thakur arguing against maintainability of CIDCO’s action, which senior counsel Chetan Kapadia justified as being legally mandatory and in the national interest.Last November, the Centre rejected the security clearance after considering the national security aspects and project being in the new airport influence zone, submitted Additional Solicitor General of India Anil Singh.ASG Singh argued that the company invoked constitutional grounds under Article 77—which ensures accountability in govt actions—for the first time, but Sundaram argued it was permissible since security clearance was denied arbitrarily, as the petition pleaded.Justice Karnik, who authored the judgment, said, “In our opinion, the issue of national security is a dynamic concept. It may not be possible to foresee a situation as to what act constitute a threat to the national security. The executive must have the latitude and necessary flexibility to take decisions which are in national interest. We do not intend to put fetters on the decision-making by the executive by going into the dispute as to whether the denial of security clearance was a policy mandating compliance of Article 77 of the Constitution of India in the peculiar facts of this case.“The HC said private commercial interest of a foreign entity, a JV partner of the petitioner, against the safety and security of the entire country had to be balanced.“Security and threat perceptions are dynamic in nature. The timing of the clearance sought, the nature of project for which the clearance has been sought, the location of the project for which the clearance has been sought are all crucial and paramount factors which would arise for consideration while taking a decision,” said the HC, adding, “The security clearance is ‘Mandatory Eligibility Criterion’ which the CIDCO rightly insisted the petitioner JV to comply.“The HC rejected a plea for a stay of its judgment on Saturday.
