‘No direct talks, buying time’: What Iran has said on Trump’s claims

Conflicting narratives have emerged between the United States and Iran after President Donald Trump claimed “very good” and “productive” talks with Tehran after announcing a temporary pause in planned strikes on the region’s energy infrastructure. However, Iranian authorities denied any direct negotiations, accusing Washington of using diplomacy as a cover to “buy time” for military action.Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One, Trump reiterated that the United States and Iran were making significant progress toward a deal. “We have major point of agreement; I would say almost all points of agreement,” he said, adding, “they want very much to make a deal; we’d like to make a deal too.”

He also revealed that US officials were in contact with “a top person” in Iran, though not the supreme leader, saying, “I can’t name the person… because I don’t want him to be killed.” Trump suggested a potential breakthrough could involve Iran abandoning its nuclear weapons ambitions in exchange for peace, and indicated further talks were expected soon. “We’re going to get together today, by probably phone,” he added.

Strike threat paused for five days

Trump’s remarks came after in the day, he announced a temporary halt to planned US strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure, including power plants, for a five-day window.Sharing a post on Truth Social, Trump said Washington and Tehran had held “productive conversations” over the past two days aimed at “a complete and total resolution” of hostilities in the Middle East.

,

Citing the talks, Trump said he had directed the Pentagon to “postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five day period, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings.”He added that the previously undisclosed US-Iran discussions would “continue throughout the week.” The announcement came just ahead of a Monday night ultimatum for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz shipping route or face threats.Earlier on Saturday, Trump had threatened to “obliterate” Iran’s power infrastructure if Tehran failed to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly a fifth of global oil supply passes.

Iran denies talks, calls it “psychological warfare”

Iran, however, rejected Trump’s claims outright.According to Iranian state media citing the foreign ministry, the US move to delay strikes was “part of efforts to lower energy prices and buy time for the implementation of his military plans.” Dismissing the idea of negotiations, the ministry said, “No negotiations have taken place and none are underway.” It added that while “initiatives from regional countries to reduce tensions” had been proposed, Tehran’s response remained consistent: “we are not the party that started this war, and all such requests must be referred to Washington.” Iranian outlets portrayed the US position as a retreat under pressure. Tasnim news agency reported, “Since the start of the war, messages have been sent to Tehran by some mediators, but Iran’s clear response has been that it will continue its defense until the required level of deterrence is achieved.” “With this kind of psychological warfare, neither the Strait of Hormuz will return to prewar conditions nor will calm return to energy markets,” it added.

Strikes continue despite diplomatic signals

Even as diplomatic signals emerged, military action continued on the ground.Shortly after Trump announced a pause on strikes, the Israeli military said it was carrying out another wave of attacks on targets in Tehran.Associated Press journalists reported hearing explosions at multiple locations across the Iranian capital on Monday afternoon, though it was not immediately clear what had been hit. Later in the day, more blasts were reported in the city, with no confirmed details on the targets.Meanwhile, Iran launched two missiles and 36 drones towards Bahrain over the past 24 hours, according to the country’s Defence Ministry.Tehran has stepped up its retaliation to US-Israeli strikes by disrupting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a route that carries about a fifth of global crude, while also targeting energy facilities, US embassies across the Gulf, and sites in Israel.

Oil markets swing sharply

The uncertainty triggered sharp movements in global oil markets. Prices, which had surged above $100 per barrel amid fears of supply disruption through the Strait of Hormuz, fell steeply after Trump’s announcement.Brent crude dropped more than 15%, briefly slipping below $100 before stabilising later. The volatility reflects the centrality of the Strait to global energy flows, with disruptions already raising fears of a prolonged supply shock.

‘No country will be immune to the effects’

Energy experts have cautioned that a prolonged disruption could trigger a crisis worse than past oil shocks, given the scale of supply at risk. The International Energy Agency (IEA) had earlier warned that the ongoing conflict has triggered a global energy crisis.Speaking at the National Press Club in Australia, IEA chief Fatih Birol said, “This crisis as things stand is now two oil crises and one gas crash put all together.”He cautioned that the global economy faces serious risks, adding, “The global economy is facing a major, major threat today, and I very much hope that this issue will be resolved as soon as possible.”Birol further warned that “no country will be immune to the effects of this crisis if it continues to go in this direction,” stressing the need for coordinated global action. The standoff has placed the Strait of Hormuz at the heart of the conflict, with both military escalation and diplomatic manoeuvring centred around the critical waterway.According to Reuters, the conflict, which began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran, has killed more than 2,000 people and roiled global markets, pushing up fuel prices and fuelling inflation concerns while straining Western alliances.Concerns had also mounted over potential strikes on Gulf electricity grids, which could disrupt desalination systems critical for drinking water supply, further unsettling energy markets.

SWOT analysis of Chennai Super Kings: CSK’s report card ahead of IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are chasing a record sixth IPL title in 2026 with a bold youth-focused rebuild, blending explosive new signings like Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma with proven leaders led by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson. The side in yellow will kick off their campaign against Rajasthan Royals at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on March 30.

The Indian Premier League 2026 is here, and for CSK, the vibe around Chepauk mixes redemption with fresh energy. Five-time champions, they carry the pain of finishing bottom in 2025 for the first time ever. The franchise stands at a crossroads. Last season brought just a handful of wins with flat batting starts, middle-order failures and a bowling unit that struggled to close out games.

But CSK moved decisively. They retained key names like Ruturaj Gaikwad, MS Dhoni, Shivam Dube, Dewald Brevis and Noor Ahmad. Then came the shake-up: the blockbuster trade for Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals, record spends on uncapped talents Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma, plus additions like Akeal Hosein, Matt Henry and Rahul Chahar. With head coach Stephen Fleming guiding the ship, the team carries a clear “new generation” feel.

CSK’s 2025 hangover: Can the refreshed batting spark a title run?

The hurt from 2025 lingers. The top rarely sets strong platforms, leaving the middle to rescue innings too often. Ruturaj Gaikwad showed class at times, but without consistent early momentum, things unravelled. Bowling delivered in spells as Noor Ahmad stood out, yet death overs and pressure situations proved costly.

Now in 2026, things look different. Sanju Samson and Ayush Mhatre promise aggressive powerplay starts, Ruturaj anchors at No. 3, Dewald Brevis brings middle-over explosion, and Dube handles the finish. Kartik Sharma adds keeping and hitting depth, while Prashant Veer offers all-round balance with left-arm spin. Spin remains elite with Noor, Akeal, and Rahul Chahar, and pace draws from Khaleel Ahmed, Matt Henry and Jamie Overton. The big question: Can this mix of youth firepower and experience spark a comeback, or will the lack of proven depth show in big moments?

CSK’s SWOT analysis for IPL 2026

Titles in the IPL are earned through team balance and performance under pressure, not just individual reputations. Here is the straight breakdown of Chennai Super Kings ahead of the 2026 season.

Strengths

Batting Order of CSK (Pic Source: X.com)
  • Dynamic top order & middle punch: Sanju Samson brings top-order aggression and experience, Ruturaj Gaikwad adds stability, Dewald Brevis explodes in the middle, and Shivam Dube finishes with power. This lineup gives CSK real phase-by-phase options.
  • Spin variety & control: Noor Ahmad, Akeal Hosein, and Rahul Chahar form a strong spin core. They can dominate middle overs, especially on turning pitches.
  • Chepauk fortress potential: With spin strength, Dube’s hitting and batting suited to slow conditions, CSK can make home games tough for visitors again.

Weaknesses

  • Pace & death bowling gaps: Khaleel Ahmed leads upfront, but the attack lacks reliable death specialists. Matt Henry excels early but can leak late, and backups struggle for consistency under pressure. The hamstring injury suffered by Nathan Ellis rules him out entirely, leaving a big hole in the overseas pace options.
  • Inexperience in key roles: Heavy bets on uncapped Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma bring upside, but limited IPL exposure risks faltering in high-stakes chases or tight defenses.
  • Finishing uncertainty: MS Dhoni still brings presence, but at this stage, his finishing impact is uncertain, and there is no clear extra enforcer if the top order falls early.

Opportunities

Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma to play for CSK in IPL 2026

  • Youth breakout window: Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma get massive chances to shine and become long-term pillars, as the fresh talent CSK needs for the future.
  • Samson leadership layer: Sanju Samson adds top-order class and captaincy know-how. His experience alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad creates smarter on-field decisions and team depth.
  • Bounce-back culture: Stephen Fleming’s steady hand lets CSK fuse aggressive youth with tactical smarts — the reset missing last year.

Threats

  • Captaincy & transition pressure: Ruturaj Gaikwad’s leadership holds respect, but steering a youth-heavy side with title expectations could test him against teams like MI or KKR.
  • Injury & form risks: Key pacers face fitness questions, and any dip in young players could expose gaps fast in a packed schedule. The loss of Ellis adds extra strain on the pace unit right from the start.
  • High-stakes league: Other teams rebuilt aggressively with data and stars. CSK cannot afford integration hiccups or the slumps that derailed them before.

Bought for Rs 50 lakh, he scored 142 runs and picked up 11 wickets in 14 matches. His quick 39 off 15 balls against LSG was a highlight. He adds depth to the lower order with both bat and ball.Mitchell Starc: Mitchell Starc is set to lead DC’s pace attack, although he is still awaiting clearance from Cricket Australia and may miss the initial matches. Captain Axar Patel has indicated that if Starc is unavailable, T Natarajan will lead the pace unit.Kuldeep Yadav: Kuldeep Yadav was in excellent form in IPL 2025, picking up 15 wickets in 14 matches. As DC’s premier spinner, he will be a key weapon and could be a strong contender for the Purple Cap this season.Mukesh Kumar: Mukesh Kumar was an important part of DC’s bowling attack last season, taking 12 wickets in 12 innings. He will play a crucial supporting role alongside Starc and Natarajan in the pace department.Impact Player OptionsDelhi Capitals are likely to use Abhishek Porel or T Natarajan as their Impact Player, depending on match situations and pitch conditions.Delhi Capitals likely XII for IPL 2026: Pathum Nissanka, KL Rahul, Nitish Rana, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Axar Patel, Ashutosh Sharma, Vipraj Nigam, Mitchell Starc, Kuldeep Yadav, Mukesh Kumar, Impact – Abhishek Porel/ T Natrajan

How long can India survive a crude shortage? Minister responds amid Middle East crisis

State Petroleum and Natural Gas minister Suresh Gopi on Monday said that India’s strategic oil reserves are designed to provide cover for about 9.5 days of supplies during disruptions or price shocks. The announcement comes as global crude oil prices continue to rise amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, raising concerns over supply disruptions for import-dependent countries like India.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, the minister said that India’s strategic petroleum reserves are currently filled to about two-thirds of their total capacity. He stated that the Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve Ltd (ISPRL) holds around 3.372 million tonnes of crude oil, which is about 64 per cent of the total 5.33 million tonnes storage capacity, news agency PTI reported.“The actual reserve is a dynamic number depending on the stocks and actual consumption, both of which are not static,” he said.India, is the world’s third-largest energy consumer. It relies on imports for nearly 88 per cent of its crude oil needs. The country has built underground storage facilities at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Mangaluru and Padur in Karnataka to act as a buffer against short-term supply shocks.Gopi highlighted that the quantity of crude stored in these caverns is not fixed and varies depending on market conditions. He added that the actual reserve is a dynamic figure influenced by both stock levels and consumption patterns. The issue has gained significance in the backdrop of the Middle East crisis, which has disrupted supplies of crude oil, natural gas and LPG from key Gulf suppliers. A substantial portion of India’s imports from countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the UAE passes through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The minister also highlighted that India has diversified its crude sourcing to 41 countries, including newer suppliers like the United States, Nigeria, Angola, Canada, Brazil and Mexico, in a bid to reduce dependence on any single region. He further informed that the government has approved the development of additional commercial-cum-strategic reserves with a capacity of 6.5 million tonnes at Chandikhol in Odisha and Padur in Karnataka, with construction work at Padur already underway.Overall, India’s total storage capacity for crude oil and petroleum products currently provides for about 74 days of consumption, including reserves held by oil marketing companies, the minister said.

China Dog Escape: Seven stolen dogs escape moving truck in China, travel 17 km together to return to their owners

Seven dogs break free from thieves and travel 17 km together to return to their village in China.

The video of seven dogs from different breeds traveling together, uncertain about where to go, stopping to see curious passersby, has been doing the rounds. As social media users ask Grok whether the video is real, the South China Morning Post reported that the seven dogs walking along a busy highway in Changchun, Jilin province, were spotted by a netizen surnamed Lu. They were stolen by thieves working for a dog meat shop and were whisked away in a truck. But the seven dogs escaped from the truck and returned home, traveling 17 km in two days. The group of dogs included a German Shepherd, which was injured, a Corgi, Golden Retreivers, Labradors and Pekinese dogs. “They resemble a band of little brothers in distress, moving in unison – nothing like stray dogs,” Lu told Dahe Daily. Lu said he tried to help the dogs several times, wanted to guide them to safety, but the dogs kept on walking and ignored his attempts. Lu shared the video on Douyin, urging the authorities to step in. The dogs were seen wandering through nearby fields by some others, too, along the way. As their videos started going viral on Chinese social media, volunteers tracked their movement and ensured that they were home safely. Bitter Coffee Stray Dog Base told SCMP that the dogs are from the save village and they know each other as they often play together and that’s why they remained in a pack for two days as they returned home. One volunteer claimed that individuals operating a dog meat shop had stolen the dogs, suggesting they may have escaped from a truck, though no witnesses saw their departure.Based on the timeline of the videos of them walking back home, it’s believed that they escaped on March 16 and returned to their respective homes on March 18. In China, dog theft is considered a criminal offence, with penalties that can include fines or imprisonment based on the value of the animal.
