Kashvee Gautam earns maiden call-up as India announce Women’s T20I squad for South Africa tour

India have unveiled their squad for the upcoming five-match Women’s T20I series against South Africa, with a mix of fresh faces and established performers highlighting the selection. The spotlight firmly falls on seam-bowling all-rounder Kashvee Gautam, who has earned her maiden T20I call-up and could finally make her debut in the shortest format during the April tour.

Kashvee Gautam’s rise earns maiden T20I call-up

Gautam’s inclusion is one of the biggest talking points in the squad announcement. The young all-rounder has already represented India in one Test and six ODIs, showcasing her ability in longer formats. She was also part of India’s recent tour of Australia, where she gained valuable international exposure.

However, the T20I format has remained the missing piece in her international journey so far. With conditions in South Africa expected to assist seamers, Gautam now stands a strong chance of finally donning the India jersey in T20Is. Her dual ability to contribute with both bat and ball adds balance to the squad, something the team management has clearly prioritized.

Uma Chetry added as backup wicketkeeper

Another notable inclusion is wicketkeeper-batter Uma Chetry, who comes in as cover for first-choice keeper Richa Ghosh. Chetry replaces teenage prospect G Kamalini, who has not featured in international cricket since her debut series against Sri Lanka last year.

Despite being part of the squad during the Australia tour, Kamalini did not get a game, and the selectors appear to have opted for a more experienced backup option in Chetry. This move indicates a focus on stability and readiness, especially in a competitive away series.

Key omissions signal shift in selection strategy

The squad also sees a few significant omissions. Left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma, who was part of the Sri Lanka series, has been left out after not getting opportunities in Australia. All-rounder Amanjot Kaur has also missed out following a difficult outing in her recent T20I appearances, where she struggled with both bat and ball. These exclusions suggest that the selectors are leaning towards form and role clarity, especially with a packed international calendar ahead.

Balanced bowling attack for South African conditions

India’s bowling unit appears well-rounded, particularly with a strong seam contingent. Gautam joins Arundhati Reddy, Renuka Singh, and Kranti Gaud to form a four-pronged pace attack suited for South African pitches.

The spin department will be led by experienced all-rounder Deepti Sharma, alongside Shree Charani and Shreyanka Patil. This combination offers both control and wicket-taking options in the middle overs, ensuring variety in India’s bowling plans.

The T20I series will begin in Durban, hosting the first two matches on April 17 and 19. The action will then move to Johannesburg for the third and fourth games on April 22 and 25. The series will conclude in Benoni on April 27.

India Women’s squad for T20Is vs South Africa: Harmanpreet Kaur (captain), Smriti Mandhana (vice-captain), Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh (wk), Arundhati Reddy, Renuka Singh, Kranti Gaud, Sree Charani, Shreyanka Patil, Kashvee Gautam, Bharti Fulmali, Uma Chetry (wk), Anushka Sharma.

‘Asim Munir spoke to Trump’: Is Pakistan emerging as backchannel in Iran war?

'Asim Munir spoke to Trump': Is Pakistan emerging as backchannel in Iran war?

US president Donald Trump spoke with Pakistan army chief Asim Munir earlier this week as Islamabad is attempting to position itself as a key mediator in the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict. Meanwhile, Pakistani prime minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held a separate call with Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday, according to officials familiar with the discussions. The talks coincided with Trump’s announcement of a five-day suspension of his threat to strike Iran’s power plants, following what he described as “very good and productive” conversations with Tehran aimed at ending the war. The White House, however, cautioned that no formal negotiations are underway and nothing is concrete as of yet. “These are sensitive diplomatic discussions and the United States will not negotiate through the news media,” it said. While Trump’s posts on Truth Social temporarily pushed oil prices down, it remains unclear if Pakistan’s mediation efforts were directly linked to the market movement. Analysts note that the conflict and stalled diplomatic channels continue to keep the region on edge.

Pakistan offers Islamabad as potential venue

Two officials familiar with the talks told Financial Times Pakistan has offered its capital as a venue for discussions between senior US figures, including US vice president JD Vance, Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, and Iranian officials.“While sharing with the Iranian President the diplomatic outreach efforts of Pakistan’s leadership, the prime minister assured the Iranian leadership that Pakistan would continue to play a constructive role in facilitating peace,” Pakistan said in a readout of the call.

Regional powers engage behind the scenes

Other regional players are also working to de-escalate tensions. Turkey, which had been involved in mediation before the war, has held talks with Iranian officials and Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff to secure a temporary ceasefire. Pakistan’s foreign minister Ishaq Dar spoke with Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan on Monday, while Egypt’s foreign minister Badr Abdelatty held separate conversations with his Iranian and Pakistani counterparts over the weekend.Iran, however, denied direct negotiations with the US. “Over the past few days, messages were received via certain friendly states conveying the US request for negotiations to end the war,” Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei told official news agency IRNA, according to FT.“Appropriate responses were given [to those initiatives] in accordance with the country’s fundamental positions.” He added that Iran’s stance on the Strait of Hormuz and its conditions for ending the conflict remain unchanged.

Experts remain skeptical

Analysts caution that early-stage backchannel messaging does not guarantee a breakthrough. Sanam Vakil from Chatham House told FT, “It’s positive to play out what a compromise and agreement might look like, but I don’t see a willingness on either side to compromise. I don’t think Trump can walk away from this crisis of his making. And I just don’t see Iran caving. They feel they have the upper hand and the leverage, this is again about their survival and the conditions that will assure their survival.Past mediation efforts, often facilitated by Oman and Qatar, stalled after the US and Israel launched the war just two days following a round of talks between the Trump administration and Iranian officials in Geneva. Officials said senior Pakistani officials have been back-channeling communications between Tehran and US envoys, ensuring ongoing dialogue.

Pakistan’s dilemma

Pakistan’s position is strengthened by its geopolitical standing. It hosts no US military bases and has largely been spared Iranian missile and drone strikes, making it an intermediary for both sides. Islamabad also has the world’s second-largest Shia population after Iran and maintains close ties with Gulf states, including a defence pact with Saudi Arabia. The defence pact with Riyadh is another contention for Islamabad to deal with. According to the pact it supposedly considers attack on one as attack on all, similar to Nato’s article 5, but the specifics of the deal remain vague. Ever since the war in the Middle East began Islamabad has pursued cautious diplomacy, condemning the strikes on Iran, while simultaneously urging de-escalation. But analysts warn it cannot remain insulated from competing pressures. However, the country remains highly dependent on oil and gas imports from the Gulf, making stability in the region crucial. Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei even acknowledged Pakistan in a message for the Iranian New Year, saying he has a special feeling toward the people of Pakistan. While Trump has paused immediate military threats and Iran maintains a firm stance, Pakistan’s mediation efforts illustrate the limited channels available for conflict de-escalation.

New train ticket refund rules: Indian Railways makes changes in cancellation rules; what passengers should know

New train ticket refund rules: Indian Railways makes changes in cancellation rules; what passengers should know
Indian Railways refund and cancellation rules

New refund rules 2026: Indian Railways has announced a new set of refund rules for confirmed train tickets. As per the new rules, if a passenger chooses to cancel a confirmed train ticket within 24 to 72 hours of the scheduled departure, there will be 25% deduction in the train ticket fare. If the cancellation is made within 8 hours then no refund will be issued on the ticket.

New Cancellation & Refund Rules 2026: Top points to know

1. For a confirmed ticket, if the cancellation is made more than 72 hours before departure, then you will get the maximum refund possible, with only the minimum flat cancellation fee per passenger applicable2. If you cancel the confirmed ticket, in the 72 hours to 24 hours window before the train departure, there will be a standard penalty window (25% of the fare subject to the minimum charge)3. Between 24 hours up to 8 hours before the departure, if the train ticket is cancelled then 50% of the fare will be deducted subject to the minimum charge4. If you cancel your confirmed train ticket less than 8 hours before the departure of the train, NO REFUND will be permitted.

New Cancellation norms for confirmed tickets

Refund rules for PRS counter tickets and e-tickets have also changed.

  • Earlier, passengers were required to cancel tickets at the terminating station. Now passengers can cancel across the counter at any station.
  • Earlier, for e-tickets passengers were required to manually file a Ticket Deposit Receipt. Now the TDR requirement has been eliminated. No passenger action is required and automatic refund is granted.

In the meantime, last year Indian Railways made several changes to its train ticket booking system as well. For example, effective October 1, 2025, Indian Railways introduced a rule mandating Aadhaar authentication for passengers booking reserved tickets under the general quota via the IRCTC website or mobile application during the first 15 minutes of the booking window. The move was intended to ensure that genuine users benefit from the reservation system while curbing misuse by unauthorised entities. The introduction of this measure followed closely on the heels of Indian Railways making Aadhaar authentication compulsory for Tatkal bookings from July 1, 2025.Those booking tickets under the Tatkal scheme are required to complete Aadhaar verification and can do so only through the IRCTC website or its mobile application. The guidelines also outlined restrictions for authorised railway ticketing agents in relation to Tatkal reservations.Such agents are barred from booking Tatkal tickets on the first day during the initial 30 minutes of the booking window. This restriction applies from 10:00 am to 10:30 am for air-conditioned classes and from 11:00 am to 11:30 am for non-air-conditioned classes.

Shubman Gill to Gujarat Titans pacers: 'Not calm, be fierce like Nehra' in IPL 2026
Gujarat Titans squad at the ‘Shubharambh’ event in Ahmedabad ahead of IPL 2026.

NEW DELHI: Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill wants his fast bowlers to perform with the same intensity and aggression that former India pacer Ashish Nehra displayed during his playing days, ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Known for his fiery pace and on-field passion, Nehra never held back – often shouting, and at times even cussing, if there were misfields or dropped catches. Now the head coach of Gujarat Titans, Nehra’s old bowling clips remain a fan favourite. His aggression and loud instructions, which kept fielders on their toes, are still widely enjoyed.

Nehra, bowling to Shahid Afridi, induced an edge, but Dhoni failed to take the catch behind the stumps. The pacer was visibly furious and lost his temper.During an interaction with host and TV personality Mandira Bedi, Gill said he wants Nehra-like aggression from his pace attack in IPL 2026.Gujarat Titans’ pace arsenal for the season includes Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, Ishant Sharma, Luke Wood, Prasidh Krishna, Ashok Sharma and Jason Holder.“I do not want my fast bowlers to be calm. I want them to be fierce just like Ashu Pa was. I’m sure you must have seen videos of how Ashu Pa acknowledged dropped catches when he was playing,” Gill said.Prasidh was the Purple Cap holder in IPL 2025 with 25 wickets in 19 matches.Gujarat Titans won their maiden IPL title in 2022 under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy.Last season, Gujarat Titans reached the Eliminator but lost to Mumbai Indians by 20 runs. Gill, however, is confident of a turnaround this time.“Even last year, we had a very successful season. We did not win the trophy, but that does not take away from the brand of cricket we played. We are now here to rectify the mistakes we made last season. We did fall short in some of the things,” he added.

No Scheduled Caste status on conversion to religions other than Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism: Supreme Court | India News

No Scheduled Caste status on conversion to religions other than Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism: Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday held that a person who professes a religion other than Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism cannot be recognised as a member of a Scheduled Caste. The top court observed that conversion to any other religion results in the loss of such status.A bench of Justices PK Mishra and NV Anjaria upheld an Andhra Pradesh high court order, which had ruled that individuals who convert to Christianity and actively practise the faith cannot retain their Scheduled Caste (SC) status. The top court said the position is clearly laid down in the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950 and the bar on recognition is absolute. The court observed that any person who does not profess one of the religions specified under Clause 3 of the 1950 Order ceases to be a member of a Scheduled Caste, regardless of birth. It added that such individuals cannot claim any statutory benefit, protection, reservation or entitlement available to Scheduled Castes under the Constitution or any law enacted by Parliament or state legislatures, according to Live Law. Emphasising the scope of the law, the bench said a person cannot simultaneously practise a religion not listed in the 1950 Order and claim Scheduled Caste status. “No statutory benefit, protection or reservation or entitlement under the Constitution or enactment of Parliament or state legislature can be claimed by or extended to any person who, by operation of clause 3, is not deemed to be a member of the Scheduled Caste. This bar is absolute and admits no exception. A person can’t simultaneously profess and practice a religion other than the one specified in clause 3 and claim membership of the Scheduled caste,” the Court held. The ruling came in a case involving a man who had converted to Christianity and was working as a pastor, but had filed a complaint under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, alleging assault and caste-based abuse. The accused challenged the case, arguing that the complainant was no longer entitled to protection under the Act after conversion. The apex body observed that evidence showed the complainant had continued to practise Christianity for over a decade and was conducting regular prayer meetings at the time of the alleged incident. It said there was no claim or proof of reconversion to his original religion or re-acceptance into his caste community.Agreeing with the high court, the top court held that the caste system is alien to Christianity and, therefore, a person professing the religion cannot invoke provisions of the SC/ST Act. It also clarified that the mere possession or non-cancellation of a caste certificate does not entitle a person to claim Scheduled Caste benefits after conversion, adding that such issues must be dealt with by the competent authority under relevant law.

NEW DELHI: Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) MP Shambhavi Choudhary took a swipe at the opposition in the Lok Sabha, using a couplet from an old “qawwali” that was remixed in last year’s blockbuster Dhurandhar.Participating in the discussion on the Finance Bill, 2026, she accused the opposition of indulging only in “negative politics,” which, she added, has been rejected by the people.

Qawwali Meets Politics: LJP MP Shambhavi Chaudhary’s Dhurandhar Dig Targets Opposition In Lok Sabha

“In the same mirror in which we can see both development and trust, the opposition sees nothing. I am reminded of shayari on their opposition — naaz o andaz se kehte hain ke jeena hoga, zeher bhi dete hain to kahte hain ke peena hoga, jab main peeta hun to kahte hain ke marta bhi nahin, jab main marta hun to kahte hain ki jeena hoga,” she said on Monday. The “qawwali” originally featured in the 1960 film “Barsaat Ki Raat” and was remixed in “Dhurandhar,” starring Ranveer Singh, last year, gaining widespread popularity. In her remarks, Shambhavi also targeted Congress MP and Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi. “Some intellectuals of the opposition call our economy dead, but the funny part is that they themselves are electorally dead and call our economy dead,” she remarked.“When they call the economy dead, they not only insult Prime Minister Narendra Modi but also our farmers, labourers, scientists and startup founders. Under the decisive leadership of PM Modi, we have moved from being part of the fragile five to being part of the top five economies,” she added.Choudhary represents Samastipur in the Lok Sabha. In the 2024 general elections, she secured around 53% of the vote to win the seat.(With PTI inputs)

First signs of fallout emerge! US-Iran war hits India’s private sector growth; manufacturing activity slumps to over 4.5-year low

First signs of fallout emerge! US-Iran war hits India’s private sector growth; manufacturing activity slumps to over 4.5-year low
Experts have cautioned that the ongoing Middle East conflict will impact India’s growth story. (AI image)

In the first signs of the impact of the US-Iran war on the Indian economy, the private sector recorded its slowest expansion in more than three years in March, according to the latest HSBC PMI survey. Rising prices linked to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran have weighed on domestic demand. However, despite the subdued conditions at home, export orders climbed to an all-time high, according to a survey released on Tuesday. The figures point to a loss of economic momentum in the closing month of the fiscal year for one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies. They also underline the potential downside risks to both India’s growth outlook and the global economy stemming from tensions in the Middle East.Economic growth in India had already moderated last quarter, with GDP expanding at 7.8%, down from 8.4% in the quarter before, amid softer government expenditure and a slowdown in private investment.

US-Iran war impact: What indicators suggest

Experts have cautioned that the ongoing Middle East conflict will impact India’s growth story by feeding into inflation, current account deficit, fiscal deficit, rupee depreciation, and eventually hitting growth – though the exact impact would depend on the length of the war. Also Read | Fragile footing: How India, China face sizeable economic damage prospects from US-Iran war; outlook has grown more dauntingThe flash India Composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global for HSBC, fell to 56.5 in March. This was significantly below the Reuters poll median estimate of 59.0 and lower than February’s final reading of 58.9, which had been expected to remain largely unchanged.Although the index stayed above the 50-mark that separates growth from contraction, the decline marked the steepest slowdown in a year and a half, indicating a clear easing in business activity. The manufacturing sector was hit the hardest, with its PMI dropping to a four-and-a-half-year low of 53.8 from 56.9. Heightened uncertainty and volatility linked to the Middle East conflict weighed on sentiment, leading to the weakest pace of factory output growth since August 2021.The services sector, which makes up the largest share of India’s GDP, also showed signs of slowing, with its PMI slipping to 57.2 from 58.1.Factory activity was scaled back as gas shortages, triggered by the conflict in Iran, disrupted production. The indices, which gauge business sentiment in the economy, are derived from preliminary survey data and may be subject to revision when the final PMI numbers are released next month. Also Read | PM Modi on Middle East war; lists key steps taken on oil & LPG – warns of lasting falloutPrice pressures escalated significantly during the period, as the cost of inputs such as oil, energy, food items, aluminium, steel and chemicals increased at the fastest rate since June 2022. At the same time, companies raised their selling prices to the highest level seen in seven months.“Cost pressures intensified, but companies are absorbing part of the increase by squeezing margins,” said HSBC’s chief India economist Pranjul Bhandari.India, the world’s third-largest importer of oil, depends on overseas sources for about 90% of its crude requirements and nearly half of its natural gas. This reliance leaves the country highly vulnerable to fluctuations in global energy prices, particularly as Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz. Since the onset of the conflict, oil prices have surged by more than 40%.In response to the situation, the government introduced emergency steps and rationed gas supplies, giving priority to household consumption after Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial channel for India’s energy imports. The resulting supply crunch has affected a wide range of industries, including fertiliser and aluminium manufacturing as well as helium supplies used in semiconductor production, increasing the likelihood of a sustained drag on economic growth. The shortage also forced several hotels, restaurants and gas-dependent industrial units across the country to temporarily halt operations.According to HSBC, the rise in manufacturing output in March was the weakest since August 2021. The manufacturing sector bore the brunt of the slowdown, with companies citing the Middle East conflict, volatile market conditions and rising inflation as key factors weighing on growth.Businesses absorbed a significant portion of the higher input costs, while pricing pressures were more pronounced in the services sector. Even so, private sector firms continued to add employees, though the pace of hiring remained modest, HSBC noted. This spike in oil prices is likely to drive inflation higher from its pre-war level of 3.21% and could weigh on economic growth.

Mojang Studios announces new content at Minecraft Live March 2026 event

Minecraft Live 2026 made a clear statement: ‘The Minecraft universe keeps expanding,’ that is, it is bigger than ever. From adorable mobs to immersive real-world experiences, a new theme park, and entirely new games, there’s something for every kind of player. And judging by the chaos, creativity, and smiles from the team, it’s just getting started.Check below all the latest updates Minecraft announced.

Minecraft Live 2026 reveals all the latest updates, new features and upcoming games

Tiny Takeover, moonlight trail and villager rescue update

One of the first big reveals was Tiny Takeover. The baby mobs in Minecraft were just smaller versions of adults but apparently, “not cute enough,” as Agnes reportedly said while holding a chicken plush. Now, each baby mob has a unique look. Pigs, rabbits, chickens, even bees, have all been redesigned to maximise cuteness. The team, including Jasper, Sarah, and Felix, talked about the inspiration behind the changes, while Sandra explained the challenges on the audio side. Some of those pigs apparently have more personality than you might expect.Minecraft is not just a game anymore. Torfi talked about real-world experiences like Villager Rescue. Players can explore biomes, mine resources, and even face mobs in physical spaces. It’s travelling globally soon, hitting Herning, Singapore, Mexico City, and Chicago.Next up is Minecraft Experience: Moonlight Trail, a nighttime adventure in a real forest. It’s opening in Buenos Aires first and might travel to other cities later. Experiencing Minecraft outside your console is a little surreal. It’s something you have to see to believe.

Minecraft world theme park

Big news here. Minecraft World is coming to Chessington World of Adventures in London in 2027. Merlin Entertainments and Mojang Studios are teaming up for the first-ever Minecraft rollercoaster, the largest Minecraft shop in the world, themed food, and, of course, mob meet-and-greets. Creators were involved to help bring tricky ideas to life. Daisy and Filip seemed really excited, though they might have overestimated how edible the merchandise is.

Chaos cubed: Sulfur caves and absorbing mobs

Another highlight was Chaos Cubed. First look at the sulfur caves: warm, glowing, but definitely not a swimming spot. Sulfur cubes are new mobs with crazy abilities. They absorb blocks, and how they act depends on what they consume. Feed them wood, and they bounce. Ice, and they slide. It seems like pure chaos, but the team is excited to see what players do. Creativity will likely reach new levels here. Mini-games, builds, experiments and anything goes.

Minecraft Dungeons II

Finally, Minecraft Dungeons II is coming. A full action-RPG with new challenges, locations, and of course, loot. You can play solo or co-op with up to three friends. It’s set to release on consoles, PC, and Game Pass. If you missed the first Dungeons, now’s the time to catch up. The developers promise intense encounters and plenty of surprises.

The Deep Dig and mini-games

During The Deep Dig segment, Chaos Cubed got its mini-game spotlight. Players like Agnes, Jens, Elisabeth, Camman18, and Bekyamon explored new features, battling sulfur cubes and discovering hidden secrets. Vu kept the chaos under control, more or less.
