The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season will commence on a markedly subdued note, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to cancel the traditional opening ceremony. Known for its extravagant blend of cricket, Bollywood glamour, and global entertainment acts, the IPL’s curtain-raiser has long been a spectacle that sets the tone for the tournament. However, this year, fans will witness a more restrained beginning, reflecting a deeper sense of respect and remembrance.

Reason why IPL 2026 will have no opening ceremony

The BCCI’s move comes in the wake of a tragic stampede that occurred in Bengaluru during celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden IPL title in 2025. On June 4, a massive crowd gathered outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to celebrate the historic victory. Unfortunately, the situation spiraled out of control, leading to a deadly stampede that claimed the lives of 11 fans, including a minor, and left several others injured.

In response, the BCCI has chosen to forgo all celebratory events at the start of IPL 2026. Secretary Devajit Saikia reportedly confirmed that the decision was taken to show solidarity with the grieving families and to respect the sentiments of the local community. The board believes that a grand celebration would be inappropriate given the tragic events linked to the city’s cricketing festivities.

Tributes to honour the victims

Instead of the usual high-energy performances, the opening match between RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28 will feature a series of heartfelt tributes. As a mark of remembrance, 11 seats at the Chinnaswamy Stadium will remain permanently unoccupied, symbolizing the lives lost in the tragedy.

Players of RCB have also paid their respects in meaningful ways. During practice sessions, members of the squad donned jerseys bearing the number 11, while black armbands are set to be worn on the opening day. Additionally, a minute of silence will be observed before the first ball is bowled, allowing players, officials, and fans to collectively honour the victims.

Notably, this is not the first instance where the BCCI has prioritised humanitarian concerns over celebration. In 2019, following the Pulwama attack, the board similarly scrapped the IPL opening ceremony and redirected the allocated funds to support the families of the martyred CRPF personnel. Such decisions highlight the governing body’s willingness to align cricketing events with broader national sentiment and empathy.

While the opening ceremony has been cancelled, preparations for the tournament itself remain firmly on track. The BCCI has already announced the schedule for the second phase of IPL 2026, meaning the complete league-stage fixtures are now available to the public. Details regarding the playoffs are expected to be released in due course.

Police later arrived to restore order as tensions escalated between members. BJP MLAs countered the protest, leading to a scuffle between Congress MLA Irfan Hafiz Lone and BJP MLA Yudvir Sethi. Assembly proceedings were adjourned briefly to calm the situation.The protest was led by NC leaders who expressed solidarity with Iran. Party MLA Tanvir Sadiq said, “We are standing in solidarity with Iran. The entire National Conference and the government of J&K are standing with them. No country has the right to attack another, and India’s top leadership should condemn this.” Sadiq emphasized that the party supports the people of Iran in light of Khamenei’s killing.Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah condemned the ongoing conflict in West Asia, asserting that regime change cannot be achieved through military bombardment. “The only people who get to choose their regime are the citizens of that country. Regime change cannot be effected by aerial bombardment,” Abdullah said. He called Khamenei’s killing a “gross misuse of force and violation of international law.”Tensions in the region escalated following joint US-Israel military strikes on Iran on February 28, which killed Khamenei and several senior leaders of the Islamic Republic. In retaliation, Iran launched strikes against US bases in Gulf countries and Israel.

As per INTERNATIONAL CRICKET COUNCIL PLAYER ELIGIBILITY REGULATIONS ARTICLE 4, ELIGIBILITY ON THE BASIS OF AGE 4.1 states, “ARTICLE 4 ELIGIBILITY ON THE BASIS OF AGE, “A Player will only be eligible to represent a National Cricket Federation in an International Match (including ICC Events and U19 Events) if he/she is aged 15 or over on the relevant squad submission date (in the case of ICC Events including U19 Events) or on the date of the first match of the series/tournament to the played (in the case of all other International Matches). “After the introduction of ICC’s regulations on Novermber 2020, the welfare and physical safety of minors participating in international cricket, including during travel, the ICC introduced a minimum age requirement of 15 years for all players competing in international matches at the U19 level and above, whether in ICC events or otherwise.Now that he has turned 15, he could be in contention for a senior India debut after the conclusion of IPL 2026. As the Middle East conflict continues to disrupt global oil supplies, the Centre has stepped in to ensure better fuel availability for citizens. In a bid to cushion local consumers from the ripples, the government has imposed fresh duties on fuel exports while easing the domestic excise duties. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that export duties have been set at Rs 21.5 per litre on diesel and Rs 29.5 per litre on aviation turbine fuel (ATF), alongside a reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel meant for domestic consumption.

In a post on social media platform X, the FM wrote, “In view of the West Asia crisis, the central excise duty on petrol and diesel for domestic consumption has been reduced by Rs 10 per litre each. This will provide protection to consumers from rise in prices. Hon. PM Modi has always ensured that citizens are protected from vagaries of supply and costs of essential goods.”“Further, duties have been imposed on exports of Diesel at Rs 21.5 per litre and on ATF at Rs 29.5 per litre. This will ensure adequate availability of these products for domestic consumption. The Parliament has been notified about the same,” Sitharaman further added.

What’s new for aviation sector?

The FM said that the excise rate on Aviation Turbine Fuel export had been raised to ensure that the fuel is prioritized for use in the domestic sector. “ATF is very important. It is necessary for India’s aircraft and our companies to get ATF. For that reason, there are many refineries in India that buy goods from abroad, refine them here, and also export them abroad and give them to us. But we have now increased the rate on that export, increased the excise duty, so that instead of exporting, they will sell it in India itself, which will ensure plenty of availability in India and people won’t feel a shortage,” she stated.The government has reworked the tax structure for Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). It has set an excise duty of Rs 50 per litre, but built-in exemptions mean the actual levy will come down to Rs 29.5 per litre in certain cases, offering some relief to the aviation sector. The official notification lists ATF at Rs 50 per litre under special additional excise duty, while also providing for exemptions that reduce the effective rate to Rs 29.5 per litre.These revised rules will not apply to exports, except in the case of supplies by public sector oil companies to neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, which will continue under the updated system.Changes to the Central Excise Rules, 2017, further state that rebate and export procedures will not be applicable to petrol, diesel and ATF, apart from such supplies to neighbouring nations by public sector firms.The government said that the measures are in public interest, aimed at striking a balance between consumer relief, revenue considerations and industry needs at a time of global energy uncertainty.

Relief for consumers

The finance ministry, in a notification issued late on Thursday, also revised the domestic duty cuts, bringing excise duty on petrol down to Rs 3 per litre from Rs 13 earlier, while diesel was fully exempted from the levy, which previously stood at Rs 10 per litre. The changes have taken effect immediately.The twin move, raising export duties while lowering domestic taxes, comes against the backdrop of a sharp surge in global crude oil prices. Oil prices have soared almost 50% since February 28, when the United States and Israel carried out strikes on Iran. Earlier this month, prices had climbed as high as $119 per barrel earlier this month before easing to around $100.

India’s reliance on foreign fuels

India, which imports 88% of its crude oil and around half of its natural gas requirements, remains particularly exposed to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Following the strikes on Iranian government, military and nuclear facilities, Iran warned shipping away from the route, while insurers pulled back coverage, effectively halting tanker movements.Even as global prices climbed, retail fuel rates in India have largely remained unchanged, putting pressure on oil marketing companies. The reduction in excise duty is expected to ease some of this strain.Prior to the announcement, rating agency ICRA had flagged the financial stress on fuel retailers, estimating losses of Rs 11 per litre on petrol and Rs 14 per litre on diesel if crude prices averaged $100–105 per barrel. It had also suggested that a cut in excise duty could help keep pump prices stable while offering companies some relief.Among private retailers, Nayara Energy has already increased prices, raising petrol by Rs 5 per litre and diesel by Rs 3 per litre. Its petrol now sells at Rs 100.71 per litre and diesel at Rs 91.31. Jio-bp, however, has not revised rates so far despite incurring losses.State-run fuel retailers, which dominate nearly 90% of the market, have continued to hold prices steady. In Delhi, petrol is priced at Rs 94.77 per litre and diesel at Rs 87.67 per litre.

Congress president hints at backing Centre with 2029 rolloutNEW DELHI: Rebuffing fresh overture from the Centre for a meeting to discuss amendments to the women’s reservation bill, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge Thursday wrote to the Modi government that the opposition is “extremely busy” with assembly election campaign and reiterated the demand that the government call an all-party meeting after April 29 when voting closes for the polls.However, for the first time since talk of amending the quota bill started, Kharge has indicated the opposition’s readiness to facilitate implementation of 33% women’s reservation in legislatures from 2029. Also, the government is learnt to have formally told Kharge that it wants to delink Census and delimitation from the women’s quota matter.Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju Thursday, wrote to Kharge seeking a meeting to discuss the issue. In response, Kharge chided the government for being in a “great hurry” to “amend a Constitutional amendment Act 30 months after it was initially passed”, and asked it to wait till the end of polls.“We are all extremely busy with the election campaign. That is the reason why we had suggested that the meeting be held after the campaign is over,” he wrote, adding, “This will, in no way, affect the implementation of the amended Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023, from the 2029 Lok Sabha election onwards.”

INDORE: A chilling CCTV video has captured the moment an 18-year-old allegedly drove a car into a group of residents inside a gated township in Indore, killing a woman software engineer and injuring several others after a dispute over an Airbnb rental spiralled into violence. The footage, now part of the police investigation, shows chaos unfolding inside the residential complex. A car is seen speeding into a cluster of people, knocking down a woman. Minutes later, in a second pass, the vehicle appears to mow down another woman as residents scatter in panic. The woman who died has been identified as Shampa Pathak Pandey, a software engineer who had recently moved into Shiv Vatika Township with her family. According to her husband, Saurabh, tensions had been building among residents over the alleged commercial use of a penthouse in the Sagarshree Enclave building. Residents had raised concerns about the frequent movement of outsiders — including foreigners, couples and young visitors — entering the premises through short-term rentals facilitated via Airbnb, police said. What began as a disagreement reportedly escalated into a violent confrontation between two groups on Wednesday night. Police said the teenager, the son of the penthouse owners, allegedly drove the car into the crowd during the clash. Assistant commissioner of Police Parag Saini said a case of murder and attempted murder has been registered against the teenager and his father, identified as Kuldeep. Several injured residents are undergoing treatment, though officials have not disclosed the exact number. The incident has once again raised questions around the use of residential properties for short-term rentals and the lack of clear regulations governing such arrangements in housing societies.

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) had a controversial start on their opening day after an incident saw the regular white ball turn pink during the first match of the season due to colour transfer from the Hyderabad Kingsmen’s jerseys. The issue, noted as a first-time occurrence by Marnus Labuschagne which quickly drew attention on social media. The PSL began its 2026 season on March 26, but controversy struck in the opening game itself. The clash between Lahore Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore unexpectedly turned into what fans described as a ‘pink-ball contest.’ The Hyderabad Kingsmen captain alerted the umpires that the ball was changing colour, explaining that dye from his team’s jerseys was rubbing off onto the white ball, gradually turning it pink and later reddish.“I did say to the umpires after the second over, ‘What’s going on? The ball is red.’ It must be from the clothes or something like that. I haven’t seen anything like this before,” a baffled Labuschagne told reporters at the post-match press conference.“I’ve seen occasions where something on a bat comes onto the ball, or when it hits the pad and takes a bit of paint off. But I’ve never seen this happen with clothing. I’m sure they’ll sort it out in the next few games,” he added.After the conclusion of the match the Hyderabad Kingsmen posted a cheeky post on X after their poor kit jersey turned the match into a ‘pink-ball contest’. Cricketers often polish the ball using their jerseys or a towel to maintain its shine, which helps bowlers generate swing. However, this incident has raised serious concerns, with many calling it an embarrassment for the PSL. Questions are being asked about how such poor-quality kits were approved, allowing jersey colour to transfer onto the match ball. The Australian star expressed hope that the franchise owners would resolve the issue quickly.

Match Summary

Lahore Qalandars began their PSL 2026 campaign with a dominant 69-run win over Hyderabad Kingsmen. Batting first, Lahore posted 199/4, powered by Fakhar Zaman’s 53 and an unbeaten 40 from Haseebullah Khan.
