'Prove me wrong': Ex-India batter throws challenge to Ajinkya Rahane ahead of IPL 2026

Former India batter Aakash Chopra believes Ajinkya Rahane has a significant point to prove heading into IPL 2026, especially in addressing long-standing doubts about his game beyond the powerplay.Rahane led Kolkata Knight Riders from the front with the bat in IPL 2025, finishing as their top run-scorer. He amassed 390 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 147.72. Despite those numbers, questions persisted around his ability to maintain scoring momentum once the field restrictions were lifted, particularly against spin, which many felt slowed KKR down at crucial stages.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra admitted he has been among those who questioned Rahane’s effectiveness after the powerplay. However, he also sees the upcoming season as a chance for the KKR skipper to silence those criticisms.“Opportunities are plenty. Maybe Ajinkya Rahane, because I am one of those guys who have been slightly critical that he will have to be played in the powerplay as his role becomes extremely limited after that, but you can prove me wrong,” Chopra said.“It’s an opportunity. Not that you need to prove me wrong. Why would you even bother? However, if you score a lot of runs in the powerplay and after that as well, it’s a great opportunity for you,” he added.Chopra further pointed out the narrative surrounding KKR’s dependence on Gautam Gambhir, with some suggesting the franchise struggles to succeed without his influence as either a player or mentor. He believes Rahane now has the platform to counter that perception by guiding the team to a title. In the same discussion, Chopra highlighted the growing importance of Rinku Singh within the setup. Currently serving as vice-captain, Rinku could emerge as a leadership contender if he delivers consistently this season.“Rinku Singh is the vice-captain. Could be a potential captain by the next season. So there could be a huge role for him. He is always made to bat down the order. He might get the opportunity to bat slightly up the order this time, and he might flourish,” Chopra said.Chopra also turned his attention to Varun Chakaravarthy, stating that IPL 2026 offers him a chance to rediscover his wicket-taking rhythm.“It’s time for Varun Chakaravarthy to make people acknowledge his superiority once again because the last four matches in the World Cup were extremely cold. He has to come back to his wicket-taking self,” he observed.Varun ended the T20 World Cup 2026 as the joint-highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets in nine innings at an economy rate of 9.25. While he began the tournament strongly with nine wickets in India’s first four matches, his impact dipped later, managing just five scalps in the remaining games while conceding runs at a higher rate.

Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who turned 15 today, is already being counted among the most destructive hitters in Indian cricket and the Indian Premier League. His stunning 35-ball century in last season’s tournament was just the beginning, as he has continued to produce big runs and impactful innings across levels over the past year.Sooryavanshi’s rapid rise saw him make his India A debut towards the end of 2025, featuring in the ACC Rising Stars Asia Cup under the leadership of Jitesh Sharma. The tournament provided him early exposure to a senior dressing room, allowing him to interact with players on the fringes of the national side and further underlining his immense potential.

Speaking on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, Jitesh shared insights into the youngster’s journey and the bond they developed, both during their India A stint and from Sooryavanshi’s time at the Rajasthan Royals academy near Nagpur.“Today he told me, bhaiya if you say something about me then watch out,” joked Jitesh. “Very cute boy. He used to come to Talegaon for practice, where RR’s academy is. That’s where I got to know him, then we went to play in Qatar, where I was captain, so that’s where we made our bond.”When asked about the source of Sooryavanshi’s remarkable hitting power, Jitesh pointed to his natural strength, particularly his wrists.“It’s all natural power, he’s very strong. His wrists are bigger than my wrists – I gave him my watch to wear and it was tight for him,” he said, highlighting the physical attributes behind the youngster’s explosive batting.“Chhota Hulk hai woh (he’s baby Hulk),” Jitesh added, drawing a comparison to the iconic Marvel character. The description fits, considering Sooryavanshi smashed 11 sixes during his IPL hundred and has consistently relied on big hitting to dominate bowlers.Jitesh also revealed the fear factor the youngster has already created among bowlers in the nets.“He swings his bat so hard that the bowler is afraid that if he hits it straight, he might die. RR’s nets bowlers, I know them, they say that they don’t pitch the ball up because he can hit it straight back. So they bowl short balls to have him hit it away from them,” he explained. With Sanju Samson no longer in the setup, Sooryavanshi is set to take up a regular role at the top of the order for Rajasthan Royals. He will be part of a youthful batting unit featuring Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Riyan Parag, both of whom understand the pressures of performing early in their careers.“He’s created that fear. He’s like Nicholas Pooran, lefty-lefty, very hard hitter. You have the fear that he can hit you,” said Jitesh, comparing him to Nicholas Pooran. “And Nicholas also listens to Hindi songs,” he added humorously.Turning 15 just a day before IPL 2026 begins, Sooryavanshi heads into his second season with massive expectations. Oppositions are likely to come prepared with specific plans, targeting him with short balls, slower deliveries and wider lines. How the young batter from Bihar adapts to these challenges could shape the impact he makes in the upcoming season.

Blade, blood and a locked shutter: What happened inside Kolkata parlour; new chilling details pour out | Kolkata News

KOLKATA: The beauty parlour owner who was hacked to death inside the salon at Mahamayatala near Garia on Tuesday, appears to have attempted to ward off the assailant with a blade before he managed to turn it on her and inflict fatal injuries. The assailant, a man from Haryana, thereafter turned the blade on himself, made a cut in his throat, and bled to death. Both bodies were found in the parlour on Tuesday.Cops said the fact that a blade from the parlour was used for the murder and suicide indicated that perhaps the killing wasn’t premeditated.Police said parlour owner Rupbani Das (50) had multiple slash wounds on her body and had bled to death. Blood spatters all over the parlour indicated a violent struggle. Cops suspect that Rupbani may have picked up a blade from the parlour to ward off Rohtak resident Pankaj Nath (44), whom she met on social media a couple of years ago. Sources said there were a couple of blade wounds on Pankaj, indicating that she possibly slashed at him before he managed to overpower her, grab the blade, and strike her, leading to gashes that caused her death. He then slashed his own throat. Even while attempting suicide, he tried to reach for the parlour shutter he had pulled down but was unable to. He was found in a pool of blood, lying against the shutter. An employee of the parlour who was turned out by Pankaj heard a heated exchange between the two.Police are also trying to find out if Rupbani told her husband Anup that she feared Pankaj as the former had started dropping her off at the parlour. For the 15 years that Rupbani has been operating the parlour, she has been travelling to and fro on her own. It was recently, after she returned from Haryana, that Anup had been dropping her off.Sources said that after the initial social media friendship between Rupbani and Pankaj, they developed a relationship. According to investigators, Pankaj was besotted and came to visit her in Kolkata some time ago. He then urged her to travel to Rohtak, where, he allegedly said her business would flourish and she could earn up to Rs 1 lakh a month. It isn’t clear if it was the lure of money or an affair that led to her travelling to Rohtak with him. But what is clear is that after a couple of months, the relationship turn sour and she returned to Kolkata.

Army puts to test its new ‘Shaurya’ drone squadron for tank units | India News

Army puts to test its new ‘Shaurya’ drone squadron for tank units

NEW DELHI: Learning from Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army is equipping its armoured regiments with dedicated drone units known as ‘Shaurya Squadrons’. These units are being integrated into tank formations to support surveillance, precision strikes, electronic warfare and logistics, adding drone capabilities directly to armoured operations.Just a few days ago, the Army tested a Shaurya Squadron in a realistic battle environment at Babina Field Firing Ranges near Jhansi, where Southern Army Commander Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth witnessed a drone squadron in action. Led by the White Tiger Division under the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, the 13-day drill showed how drone support added extra punch to the fire power of armoured regiments. On X, the Southern Command said, “Fielded in a realistic battle environment, Shaurya Squadron demonstrated the seamless integration of real-time surveillance assets with mechanised forces, attack helicopters, swarm strikes and coordinated firepower, enhancing battlefield awareness, compressing the sensor-to-shooter cycle and enabling swift, decisive battlefield response.”A source in the Army told TOI that “5-6 Shaurya Squadrons have been activated till now”. “However, the concept of the drone unit integration is still at a nascent stage and more trials are needed for perfection. The formal raising of such units will happen after a formal approval is received,” the source said. The Army operates one of the world’s largest main battle tank fleets with 63 armoured regiments. Each regiment is typically equipped with about 45 tanks, constituting a total fleet of roughly 4,500 tanks, including T-90S Bhishma, upgraded T-72 M1 ‘Ajeya’, and Arjun MK1/MK1A variants.Drawing lessons from global conflicts, including Russia-Ukraine war, that are drone-centric, the Indian Army is gradually pushing to institutionalise UAV or drone capabilities across its arms.In the infantry, the Army last year raised Ashni platoons, equipped with surveillance UAVs and loitering munitions for tactical ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) and strike roles. In the artillery, Divyastra batteries have been raised to integrate UAV-based targeting with conventional guns for faster and more autonomous engagement cycles.

‘Talks going very well’: Trump pauses strikes on Iran energy infra for 10 more days

'Talks going very well': Trump pauses strikes on Iran energy infra for 10 more days

US President Donald Trump has pushed back his deadline for possible strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure for 10 more days, saying the pause came at Tehran’s request and stressing that negotiations are moving in a positive direction. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he was delaying any action by 10 days until April 6 at 8 pm Eastern Time. “As per Iranian Government request, please let this statement serve to represent that I am pausing the period of Energy Plant destruction by 10 Days to Monday, April 6, 2026, at 8pm, Eastern Time,” Trump said.“Talks are ongoing and, despite erroneous statements to the contrary by the Fake News Media, and others, they are going very well,” he added. The move comes amid continued diplomatic efforts, with US envoy Steve Witkoff saying there were “strong signs” Tehran could be open to negotiations. The deadline, originally set as a 48-hour ultimatum demanding Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face attacks on power facilities, has now been extended multiple times.Witkoff also revealed that Washington had sent a 15-point proposal to Iran through intermediaries in Pakistan, describing the moment as a potential turning point. Iran has reportedly responded via backchannels and is awaiting a US reply.According to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, Tehran’s response includes demands that go beyond the US proposal — calling for an end to US and Israeli strikes, reparations, and recognition of its authority over the Strait of Hormuz.Speaking at the White House, Trump alternated between threats and optimism, saying Iran wanted a deal but only after facing heavy military pressure. He also suggested the US could take control of Iran’s oil resources, drawing comparisons to past actions in Venezuela.Meanwhile, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid warned that the ongoing conflict is stretching Israel’s military capacity. He criticised the government for pushing the country into a multi-front war without sufficient planning or resources.Israeli military spokesperson Effie Defrin also highlighted the need for more troops, particularly along the Lebanese front, as operations expand.

‘Worst nightmare a top tennis player can have’: Iga Swiatek makes honest admission | Tennis News

'Worst nightmare a top tennis player can have': Iga Swiatek makes honest admission

NEW DELHI: Iga Swiatek, one of the world’s top tennis players, recently opened up about a tough phase in her career after an early exit from the Miami Open. She was visibly emotional after losing to Magda Linette in the round of 64 at the women’s singles event, even stepping aside briefly to wipe away tears before facing the media. Despite generally being happy in life, she admitted that tennis has started to feel confusing and mentally exhausting. “This is like the worst nightmare a top tennis player can have, dropping in matches in terms of the level.” She said, as quoted by The Guardian. Even though Swiatek is only 24 and already a multiple Grand Slam winner, success has brought intense pressure. Her strong mindset, once her biggest strength, has lately turned into overthinking and self-doubt. Things became harder after a doping-related issue in 2024, which led to a short suspension (later resolved). Missing key tournaments also hurt her chances of reclaiming the No 1 ranking from Aryna Sabalenka, which affected her confidence. She did manage a big comeback by winning Wimbledon when expectations were low, but the stress soon returned. While she still performs better than most players, the pressure shows especially in big matches. After the Miami loss, Swiatek decided to split with her coach Wim Fissette, signalling a turning point in her career. Though her team, including her psychologist, has played a big role in her success, she may now need to rely more on herself and take full control of her decisions.

SC: Vague allegations no basis for dowry case | India News

SC: Vague allegations no basis for dowry case

NEW DELHI: Criminal proceedings cannot be initiated merely based on vague and unsupported allegations, ruled SC, quashing a dowry harassment and cruelty case filed against a Kanpur-based couple in their seventies by their daughter-in-law.A bench comprising Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan noted that the case was lodged almost seven years after the alleged incidents of cruelty and observed that citizens must be vigilant about their rights and take timely action, particularly in matrimonial disputes.SC: Mere statement on dowry demand not enough to initiate criminal proceedingsThe complainant and the prosecution have failed to put forth any material evidence or substance which supports the allegations contained in the FIR and the chargesheet. A mere statement that the accused/appellants herein frequently demanded dowry and harassed the complainant for the same is not sufficient to initiate criminal proceedings against them…” the apex court bench said.On a petition filed by the couple and their daughter seeking to quash the case against them, Supreme Court further said the prosecution had failed to provide any sufficient cause for the delay, which casts aspersions on its case.“We find that citizens who allege commission of an offence should not dawdle on their rights but should rather pursue them in real time in order to achieve the ends of justice — vigilantibus non dormientibus jura subveniunt, meaning the law protects those who are vigilant about their rights”. The court emphasised that such delay (or lack thereof) matter in matrimonial cases or criminal cases between spouses because, due to the personal nature of the allegations and the relationship, such cases often lack adequate evidence to prove or disprove the claims.

Maharashtra FDA minister Narhari Zirwal in new row as video with trans person in room goes viral | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: FDA minister Narhari Zirwal of NCP found himself at the centre of a fresh controversy on Thursday after a video showing him with a transgender person in a bedroom went viral. The video shows Zirwal asleep and the trans person sitting next to him. Another clip shows the person lying on the bed with Zirwal in the room.Ravi Yadav, claiming to be the brother of Pavan Yadav who’s allegedly in the video, told a TV channel, “She’s recorded videos and taken photos with powerful people. She blackmails and extorts them. She also wanted powerful positions like an MLC or a position on the transgender board. She was blackmailing me too.” Congress and activist Anjali Damania demanded Zirwal be sacked.Mumbai: NCP politician Amol Mitkari questioned the motive behind the video and said it was a conspiracy against his party colleague Narhari Zirwal, who had been the first to demand Dy CM Sunetra Pawar should replace her late husband Ajit Pawar as chief of NCP after his death in an air crash in Jan. This is the second controversy to besiege Zirwal, a politician from the tribal-dominated Dindori district. Just two months ago, the Anti-Corruption Bureau had caught a clerk in his office accepting a bribe of Rs 35,000. At that time too, the opposition had demanded his resignation. Both controversies emerged after Ajit Pawar’s death. After the air crash, Zirwal was the first leader from the party to say Ajit Pawar’s NCP should be merged with that of his uncle Sharad Pawar. State Congress chief Harshavardhan Sakpal said, “This govt should be dismissed. The Epstein files are infamous in the world. The Fadnavis govt has such ministers.” Damania said, “This is a shameful video. The same minister was earlier connected to a bribery case. Does the party want to showcase such leadership? He should be sacked immediately.” However, Mitkari said, “Why has this 8-month-old video surfaced immediately after the assembly session? It has probably been done because the SIT in the case of rape accused astrologer Ashok Kharat will expose powerful people. This will distract from that case.” Mitkari added, “This is a pre-planned conspiracy. Zirwal was the first leader to say Sunetra Pawar should succeed her husband as NCP chief. Then the bribery case surfaced. When that seemed to go cold, this controversy has come up.” Pressure, meanwhile, is mounting on Sunetra Pawar not only from opposition but from her own party members to take some tough decisions regarding state chief of NCP women’s wing Rupali Chakankar and Zirwal. The new Zirwal controversy erupted on a day Sunetra completed one month as NCP president. Some party office-bearers from Nashik, Ahilyanagar and other units have written to Sunetra Pawar seeking Chakankar’s removal as women’s wing chief after her name cropped up in the astrologer Ashok Kharat case. Prerana Balkawade, chief of Nashik NCP’s women wing said, “NCP’s image is getting tarnished after Chakankar’s name got linked to the Kharat case.” (With inputs from Anurag Bende in Pune)
