Former spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan recalls disturbing incidents of racism during his career in Indian cricket

The gentleman’s game has long been celebrated for its spirit of sportsmanship, yet for former Indian leg-spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, the reality behind the boundary ropes was often far from noble. Recently, the 60-year-old veteran took to social media and interviews to detail a harrowing history of alleged racism and colourism that spanned his journey from a 14-year-old prodigy to a seasoned commentator. His revelations have sparked a necessary, albeit uncomfortable, conversation about the deep-seated prejudices within the cricketing ecosystem.

Sivaramakrishnan’s ordeal began long before he donned the India cap. At just 14, while serving as a net bowler at Chepauk, he was reportedly mistaken for ground staff by a senior India batter due to his dark complexion. The senior player demanded that the teenager clean his shoes. Though the young spinner stood his ground, the incident served as a chilling introduction to the systemic bias he would face for decades.

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan opens up on alleged racism he experienced in Indian cricket

The discrimination was not limited to isolated encounters with seniors; it permeated his domestic career and international appearances. Sivaramakrishnan recalled how his own Tamil Nadu teammates frequently referred to him as ‘karupa’—a Tamil term used to mock his dark skin. This internal friction was mirrored by external hostility. During matches in North Indian cities like Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Jalandhar, the spinner was often subjected to derogatory chants from the stands. Crowds would taunt him with the phrase “Kalia, tera kya hoga,” a racially charged jab that reduced his athletic merit to the shade of his skin.

Perhaps the most poignant moment of his career occurred on his 17th birthday. What should have been a celebration turned into a source of lasting trauma when a senior cricketer mocked the dark chocolate cake brought for the occasion. The player reportedly joked that the cake was the ‘right color’ for a ‘dark boy.’

“Hey Sunny, you ordered the right colour cake. Such a dark chocolate cake for a dark boy,” Sivaramakrishnan told The Indian Express.

The comment was so hurtful that Sivaramakrishnan broke down in tears and refused to cut the cake, eventually finding solace only when Sunil Gavaskar stepped in to comfort him.

The lasting impact on mental health and the sport

Sivaramakrishnan, who claimed 41 international wickets across 9 Tests and 16 ODIs, was widely considered one of the most gifted leg-spinners of his generation. However, the mental scars from these incidents remained long after his playing days ended. Even during his 33-year tenure as a commentator, a role from which he recently retired, the veteran suggested that colourism continued to play a role in how he was perceived and treated.

The statistics regarding representation and treatment of players from Southern India have often been a point of quiet debate, but Sivaramakrishnan’s vocal stance brings the issue into the spotlight. His story highlights a broader cultural challenge within India, where colourism (prejudice based on skin tone) is often dismissed as banter despite its devastating psychological effects. By coming forward, the former spinner isn’t just recounting personal grievances; he is challenging the BCCI and the global cricketing community to address the toxic culture that allows such discrimination to persist in the locker rooms and the stands alike.

First since 1861: US paper currency to bear Donald Trump’s signature
US Dollar bill bearing Trump’s signature (AI-generated image)

US President Donald Trump‘s administration has once again stirred controversy, this time with a proposal to include his signature on American paper currency ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary. The US Treasury Department announced on Thursday that future US dollar notes will carry Trump’s signature alongside that of the Treasury Secretary, marking the first time in history that a sitting president’s signature will appear on paper currency.Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the move is intended to commemorate the United States’ semiquincentennial celebrations in 2026, according to CNN. Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Bessent said in an official statement, “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are on a path toward unprecedented economic growth, lasting dollar dominance, and fiscal strength and stability.”“There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J Trump than US dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial,” Bessent added. Providing further context, the Treasury said the move is part of a broader effort to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States, during which Trump’s likeness is also expected to feature on commemorative materials.US Treasurer Brandon Beach linked the proposal to the administration’s economic narrative. “As the 250th anniversary of our great nation approaches, American currency will continue to stand as a symbol of prosperity, strength, and the unshakable spirit of the American people under President Trump’s leadership,” he said.Beach further added, “The President’s mark on history as the architect of America’s Golden Age economic revival is undeniable. Printing his signature on the American currency is not only appropriate, but also well deserved.”However, the announcement has raised legal and political questions. US law has long restricted the depiction of living individuals on currency, a rule dating back to 1866 aimed at preventing any perception of monarchy-like practices. In 1861, the US government issued its first general circulation paper money, known as Demand Notes to finance the Civil War due to coin shortages and war expenses. According to the Act of July 17, 1861, $5, $10 and $20 notes were payable on demand in coin and were nicknamed “greenbacks” due to their green reverse side. The currency proposal comes alongside another contentious plan under consideration which includes issuing a $1 coin featuring Trump to mark the anniversary. Draft designs shared by officials show the president’s profile on one side and an image of him standing before the American flag on the other.

IPL 2026: Gill fires bold ‘I don’t have anything to prove' message despite T20 WC snub

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has made it clear that he is not feeling any added pressure heading into the Indian Premier League 2026 season, insisting that his primary focus remains on helping his team secure another title rather than chasing individual milestones.Gill, who currently leads India in Tests and ODIs, was notably left out of the T20I side to accommodate Sanju Samson at the top of the order. The decision proved effective, as India went on to win a record third Men’s T20 World Cup title at the Narendra Modi Stadium earlier this month, with Samson emerging as the Player of the Tournament.

Addressing the media ahead of the season, Gill emphasised that his performances over the past few years speak for themselves and that he does not feel the need to prove anything further.“Not at all. I think, if you look at the past three or four seasons, I have the most runs in IPL. So, I don’t think I have anything to prove, in this season particularly. The four years that I’ve played for this team, I think we have done decently well as a team, and I think I’ve done decently well as a batsman.“So, I don’t think I need to prove my worth to anyone. I think I need to do what I’ve been doing for the past four years. As a team, we need to be consistent, which I think we have been. If we continue doing that, sooner or later, I think we will win that trophy once more,” Gill said during a pre-season press conference on Thursday. The 26-year-old reiterated that personal achievements are not a driving factor for him, whether he is representing his franchise or the national team.“Honestly, I am not the one to look too much into personal goals, whatever team I am playing for, whether it be for my country or for Gujarat.“The team that I am playing for — I like them to win, and that is where my personal goal starts, and that’s where it ends. So, for me, I think the goal doesn’t change — make my team win as many matches as possible. Obviously, as a team, if you are playing in the IPL, you are playing to win it.“If you are playing a series, you are looking to beat the other teams in the series, so those are the goals that I look forward to, and I don’t really have my personal goals. Like right now, it’s obvious to win the IPL. Once that ends, obviously, we are going to have some other tournaments within the team. So my personal goals would change into that, and that’s how I like to look at my goals.”Gill has been in exceptional form in recent IPL seasons. In 2023, when Gujarat Titans reached the final, he clinched the Orange Cap with 890 runs at an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80. He followed it up with 426 runs in 2024 at an average of 38.73 and strike rate of 147.40, before scoring 650 runs in 2025 at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 155.88.With consistent performances behind him and leadership responsibilities on his shoulders, Gill enters IPL 2026 focused firmly on team success over individual accolades.

Iran’s oil revenue soars as others struggle due to Strait of Hormuz crisis; how much is it earning daily?

Iran is benefitting twofold from the sale of oil amid rising prices since the start of the war as it is the only country to transit the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran is estimated to have generated roughly $139 million per day from sales of this key blend so far in March, up from about $115 million per day in February, Bloomberg reported citing export estimates from TankerTrackers.com.Despite US and Israel’s continuous strikes on Iran, its crude exports are estimated to have stayed broadly in line with prewar levels of around 1.6 million barrels per day this month, the report said. Tankers carrying Iranian oil are still loading at the Kharg Island terminal and transiting the Strait of Hormuz, with activity picking up in recent days. Meanwhile the war-hit nation has blocked ships going to aggressor nations via Hormuz.

Strait of Hormuz Crisis Explained | Will Iran Challenge the West More Than Red Sea

Iran’s crude has strengthened relative to the global Brent benchmark, with its discount narrowing to about $2.10 per barrel at the start of this week, the tightest level in nearly a year. Before the conflict, the gap had exceeded $10 per barrel..While countries such as Iraq and Kuwait have been forced to sharply curb output and the UAE and Saudi Arabia have rushed to find alternative export routes, Iran has continued shipping crude from the Persian Gulf, exporting about 1.6 million barrels a day on average between March 1 and 23, near prewar levels, after already recording unusually high shipments in February, the strongest since around July 2018.Oil facilities at Iran’s key export hub on Kharg Island have remained untouched by US strikes, which targeted only military sites, even as US President Donald Trump had indicated at attacking the island during the initial days of the war.Iran has warned US and Israel that Hormuz would be “completely shut” if its energy infrastructure is targeted. Trump halted attacks on its energy infrastructure till April 6 saying the talks are going very well“As per Iranian Government request, please let this statement serve to represent that I am pausing the period of Energy Plant destruction by 10 Days to Monday, April 6, 2026, at 8 P.M., Eastern Time. Talks are ongoing and, despite erroneous statements to the contrary by the Fake News Media, and others, they are going very well,” he said.

PANAJI: The alleged sex scandal in Curchorem has intensified days after the arrest of 20-year-old Soham Sushant Naik, with the case now transferred to the crime branch for a detailed probe. Three FIRs have been registered so far, and statements of two survivors have been recorded. Investigators have found that both the accused and the survivors were minors at the time of the alleged incidents, which reportedly took place around three years ago when they were in college. Naik has been booked under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita, the Information Technology Act, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, and the Goa Children’s Act. A local court remanded him to four-day police custody on Monday.

IPL doesn’t need MS Dhoni in 2026, claims ex-KKR star

The 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin soon. As the league’s popularity grows year by year, with new teams and international players joining, former cricketers and experts have begun speculating about players like MS Dhoni, who will turn 45 this year.

Dhoni is currently the oldest player in the IPL, having represented his team since 2008 and played a total of 278 IPL matches, holding the record for the most appearances in the tournament’s history. He has represented Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiant (2016–2017), scoring over 5,000 runs as a wicketkeeper-batsman.

However, since his surgery in 2023, Dhoni’s performance has declined; he has mostly played as an impact player or batted at number 7 or 8, typically in the final overs. In the last season, he averaged around 25 runs at a sub-par strike rate of 135.7 across 14 games.

The Role of MS Dhoni in Today’s IPL

Many Indian fans tune in to the IPL to watch players who have retired from international cricket, such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. With new franchises emerging and auction prices rising every year, the league has evolved significantly.

Former cricketer Aakash Chopra recently questioned whether the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) still requires Dhoni’s presence to maintain the league’s growth and popularity.

From 2023 to 2026: Will This Be MS Dhoni’s Last Season?

After CSK’s last title win, MS Dhoni said in the post-match presentation that he had “one more year of cricket left.” He later underwent knee surgery under sports medicine specialist Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala. When asked how long he planned to continue, Dhoni replied simply: at least another year.

As the 2026 season approaches, his longevity remains the sport’s biggest talking point. Chopra believes Dhoni’s self-awareness will dictate his exit. He told RevSportz: “Whenever Mahendra Singh Dhoni comes on the field, his reputation precedes him, and with that comes responsibility. He is playing because he loves the game. He has achieved everything there is to achieve. But the day he feels he is a liability if he can’t hit a six, drops catches, or misses stumpings he will leave on his own. He will say, ‘that’s it.’”

Does the IPL Still Need MS Dhoni?

Chopra raised the question: despite the league’s global popularity, is Dhoni’s presence still essential? He pointed out that the IPL has grown tremendously and does not depend solely on any single player. International interest in the league remains high, even as players leave other competitions, such as the PSL or ECB, to participate.

“With due respect to MS and others, the IPL has become incredibly big. A small child doesn’t learn to walk until you hold his finger. But holding his finger has helped him grow. Now he is running, and when he is running, he doesn’t need anyone to hold his finger. The ecosystem will not be significantly affected whether it is MS or someone else. The IPL can take care of itself,” Chopra said.

However, the decision of whether to play or not ultimately depends on MS Dhoni and the CSK team management. There is no doubt that his presence can influence any team’s performance, as we saw during the concluded ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Dhoni was seen motivating the Indian team from the stands alongside last year’s World Cup-winning captain, Rohit Sharma, during the semi-final and final games against New Zealand and England.

No team would want to risk losing such a genius, who can even change the course of a match from the pavilion. Chennai Super Kings will play their first match of the season against Rajasthan Royals on March 30 in Guwahati.
