NOIDA: PM Modi inaugurated Noida International Airport in Jewar on Saturday, and dwelled at length on energy supply turbulence precipitated by the West Asia conflict, underlining ethanol blending as a key strategy to reduce dependence on crude oil imports.Modi said that the country would have had to import an additional 4.5 crore barrels of crude annually — equivalent to 700 crore litres — if not for ethanol blending in petrol.

‘Taking Every Step’: PM Modi’s BIG Assurance To Tackle Global Shock Without Hurting Citizens

“Farmers’ efforts in this have given a lot of relief to the country at this time of global crisis,” he said. Ethanol production, he added, has not only benefited the nation but also farmers, with approximately Rs 1.5 lakh crore worth of foreign exchange being saved. Jewar is a gateway to the sugarcane belts of western UP. Sugarcane feedstock is a key source of ethanol.Govt secured supplies, protecting people from fuel price rise: ModiIn a recent speech in Parliament, PM Narendra Modi had highlighted the progress in ethanol blending, from a mere 1-1.5% a decade ago to nearly 20% today. This has reduced oil imports by approximately four and a half crore barrels per year, he had said, also citing electrification of railways, which has saved roughly 180 crore litres of diesel annually, and expansion of metro networks.India achieved its E20 ethanol blending target — mixing 20% ethanol with petrol — ahead of schedule in 2025, a goal set under the Modi govt to cut fuel import bills and reduce emissions. The All India Distillers’ Association has offered to supply ethanol blends exceeding 20%. India’s ethanol sector now has a cumulative production capacity of around 2,000 crore litres, of which over 1,000 crore litres is used for blending with petrol. In his Jewar speech, Modi also said that while crude prices had risen because of the US-Israel war with Iran, India had made all efforts to secure its supplies and ensure that common people were not affected by the price rise.“We also import fuel from the war-affected area. Each country is taking measures to deal with this issue. We are also taking all measures to ensure common people do not face any stress,” he said. Crude prices have surged globally, but this has not been reflected in retail prices of petrol and diesel in India.“The issue arising from the war… we have discussed this in Parliament. I also spoke to CMs of different states on this. I again call on people to address this issue unitedly, peacefully. This is a global crisis. We have to care about our country, and this is our strength. I also urge all party leaders that in a crisis like this avoid talk that is not good for the country,” he said.

WATCH: Jacob Duffy folds both SRH openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head in single over during IPL 2026 opener

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 kicked off with high-octane drama at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, March 28. In a quintessential Bengaluru atmosphere, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the toss and elected to field first against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). While the ‘Orange Army’ entered the match with their reputation as clinical power hitters, they were met with a masterclass in pace bowling by RCB’s New Zealand import, Jacob Duffy. In a single, game-changing over, Duffy dismantled the most feared opening duo in the league, sending shockwaves through the SRH dugout.

SRH rocked early as Jacob Duffy removes Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head in quick succession

The match swung decisively in RCB’s favor during the third over of the innings. Duffy, operating with a scrambled seam and impeccable lengths, first targeted Abhishek Sharma. After being tucked up by a series of back-of-length deliveries, Sharma attempted to break the shackles on the first ball of the over (2.1). However, the 133kph delivery forced a sliced pull shot. The ball went straight up, and Jitesh Sharma kept his composure underneath it to complete the catch. Abhishek departed for a sluggish 7 off 8 balls, continuing a lean patch that has shadowed him since the pre-season.

The Chinnaswamy crowd had barely finished celebrating when Duffy struck the final blow of the over (2.6). Travis Head, known for his ability to snatch games away in the Powerplay, fell victim to a 136kph short ball outside off. Head connected with a signature hard, flat pull, but he couldn’t find the gap. The ball rocketed toward deep square leg, where Phil Salt showed exceptional athleticism. Salt cupped the ball near his chest and tumbled backward with the momentum, but maintained a firm grip. With Head dismissed for 11 off 9 balls (including two boundaries), the ‘Travishek’ partnership was effectively neutralized, leaving SRH reeling at 23/2.

SRH’s early wobbles make consolidation period a task against RCB in opening clash

The early wickets of the openers forced SRH into an immediate defensive shell, turning the opening clash into a steep uphill climb. The pressure didn’t let up, as Duffy returned to claim Nitish Kumar Reddy for just 1 run, caught by Abhinandan Singh. By the end of the 5th over, SRH had slumped to 29/3, a far cry from the explosive starts they were known for in previous seasons. Duffy’s initial spell was nothing short of elite, finishing his four-over quota with remarkable figures of 3/22 at an economy of 5.50, including 13 dot balls.

The responsibility of the recovery fell onto the shoulders of captain Ishan Kishan and the reliable Heinrich Klaasen. Despite the early wobbles, Kishan showed immense resilience, counter-attacking to reach 45* off 24 balls, while Klaasen provided support with a steady 19. By the 10th over, SRH managed to drag the total to 87/3, thanks to a 50-run partnership that stabilized the ship. However, the damage inflicted by Duffy in those opening minutes remains the talking point of the IPL 2026 opener, proving that even on a batter-friendly pitch like Bengaluru, disciplined pace can still reign supreme.

Mumbai: The first phase of Metro Line 9 between Kashigaon and Dahisar is likely to be inaugurated on April 3, with final approval awaited from the state government. The event is also expected to include the bhoomipujan of a Pod Taxi system in BKC and the launch of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for the Thane–Borivali tunnel project. The 4.5-km elevated Metro stretch has completed trials and received key safety clearances, while the Golden Nest flyover — which had drawn criticism over lane narrowing — is also slated to be opened for motorists. The development gained traction after Bhayander MLA Narendra Mehta shared a video indicating that the Metro line could be opened soon. However, officials from Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority said the date is not yet final. “We have requested the date and are awaiting approval,” said an official. The inauguration is expected to be attended by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and deputy chief ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar. Metro Line 9 is an extension of the operational Metro Line 7 (Dahisar–Gundavli). Commuters from Mira Road will be able to travel directly to Gundavli without changing trains, as the corridor seamlessly merges at Dahisar, providing a continuous link up to Andheri East.Passengers heading towards the western suburbs can interchange at Dahisar to Metro Line 2A to reach Andheri West, which connects with DN Nagar metro station on Metro Line 1 for onward travel towards Versova and Ghatkopar. The Phase I stretch includes four stations — Dahisar (East), Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon and Kashigaon — serving the growing Mira-Bhayandar region. The controversial Golden Nest Junction flyover, which became a talking point due to narrowing of lanes, is also set to open. The Pod Taxi project in BKC, estimated at Rs 1,016 crore under a PPP model, will span 8.8 km with 38 stations, using pods carrying 3–6 passengers.Meanwhile, the 11.8-km Thane–Borivli twin tunnel project will see the launch of TBMs, with the corridor expected to cut travel time to around 15 minutes.

Mumbai HC allows foeticide before MTP in 34-wk genetic disorder pregnancy | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has permitted foeticide in the uterus before medical termination of a nearly 34-week pregnancy in which the foetus has a genetic bone growth disorder characterised with shortened arms and legs and a large head.Considering the “advanced gestational age” and the report of the medical board of J J Hospital, Justices Bharati Dangre and Manjusha Deshpande on Friday permitted “petitioner no.1 to terminate the pregnancy by performing feticide in utero prior to delivery.”The woman (37) and her husband moved the HC after the medical board of the District Civil Hospital, Thane, on March 20 advised against MTP. It opined that the foetus is detected with non-lethal short limb skeletal dysplasia. There is “no life-threatening anomaly identified” and the condition is compatible with postnatal survival. On Thursday, the couple’s advocate, Meenaz Kakalia, relied on HC’s Feb 2025 decision where JJ board had recommended MTP of a foetus with skeletal dysplasia. Therefore, HC directed JJ board to examine the petitioner and give its opinion. The judges noted that the board in unison recommended MTP and concluded that the “foetus is affected by serious congenital abnormality and/or mental abnormalities, and continuation of pregnancy is likely to result in the birth of a child with significant morbidity.” As the foetus, “approximately 33-34 weeks,” may be born alive and since the couple sought foeticide in utero before termination, the board permitted it, subject to the HC’s approval.Questioning the petitioners’ insistence on foeticide, state’s advocate Molina Thakur said that JJ has conducted many MTPs earlier and “termination can be done by following the due process.” Kakalia, however, cited the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s guidance note that necessitates foeticide procedure in pregnancies beyond 24 weeks. She explained that “because the foetus is formed substantially, if only termination is done, the foetus may still be born alive.Addressing Thakur, Justice Dangre said, “Now the opinion is the child is going to be born with so many malformations. Who is going to cater to this child? The State? You expect the State to do it? That’s why the parents don’t want to give birth to this child because that will be a burden.” She further said the procedure probably is that before termination, “the foetus itself is eliminated.”The judges took note of Centre’s guidelines, framed on request from Supreme Court/HCs, set out procedures and steps for MTP, including stopping foetal heartbeat. Allowing the petition, they concurred with JJ board’s opinion, “which has also kept in mind the autonomy and wishes of the patient, who had desired for foeticide in utero prior to delivery.” As JJ does not have facility and expertise to carry out foeticide procedure and the couple desired to have it done in a private hospital, the judges permitted it “at their risk and consequences.

LPG supplies may stop in 3 mths, apply for piped gas: Min | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Food and civil supplies minister Chhagan Bhujbal said on Saturday that LPG supplies may dry up in the next three months in the backdrop of the US-Iran war and there should be an increased focus on switching to piped natural gas (PNG).“We have had a discussion in Delhi with the food and civil supplies minister and petroleum minister. PNG is cheaper and should be used as much as possible. According to their circular, it’s possible that LPG supplies will stop in the next three months. By then, people should apply for PNG connections where it is possible,” said Bhujbal. He said in urban areas, where piped gas is available in municipal areas, it should be made mandatory. “In municipalities where PNG is available, it should be made mandatory for the occupation certificate. Like water supply connections are required before occupation certificates are given,” said Bhujbal. He also said permissions should be speeded up for laying new PNG lines. “Permissions are required from an adjoining building which has a PNG connection. They often resist this because they fear their own supply will reduce. Such permissions should be done away with,” he said.

Mumbai cops’ push for MCOCA in Parel chain snatching case falls flat | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Even as the police were eager to bring chain snatching under the ambit of the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), with the prosecution’s failure to provide documentary evidence linking the accused to a criminal syndicate, it has not stuck in all cases. While a special court this week convicted and sentenced 46-year-old Ajiz Sayyed, alias Irani, to seven years rigorous imprisonment for a 2018 Parel chain-snatching case, it has struck down the state’s attempt to label him as an organized criminal.Special judge NR Pradhan ruled that while the robbery was proven through the “trustworthy, cogent and reliable” testimony of eye-witnesses who caught the accused red-handed, court found major procedural and evidentiary gaps in the claims of him being involved with a gang. The judge noted that the Sanctioning Authority, then police commissioner Subodh Jaiswal, admitted in cross-examination that the exact quantum of financial gain was not mentioned. “There is absolutely no evidence on record to show that accused…was member of organised crime, and by doing organised crime, he earned pecuniary gain,” special judge NR Pradhan ruled, leading to Sayyed’s acquittal from all charges under MCOCA. Special public prosecutor Vijay Malankar cited the evidence of 30 witnesses to seek the accused conviction. The incident occurred on Dec 4, 2018, near KEM Hospital. The victim, was walking with her mother when Sayyed and an accomplice, Mohammed Sayyed, alias Andu, approached on a black motorcycle. The pillion rider snatched Sakpal’s mangalsutra, valued at Rs 1.60 lakh, and the duo attempted to speed away but their escape was thwarted when their motorcycle slipped during a sharp U-turn, allowing a pursuing witness, Prathamesh Sarang, and local residents to apprehend them. Andu subsequently absconded and is yet to be caught. The judge noted the significance of the immediate capture and noted that the stolen jewelry was recovered directly from Sayyed’s person during a search at the Bhoiwada police station later that evening. The legal battle centered largely on the invocation of MCOCA. The prosecution argued that the duo operated as an organized crime syndicate led by Andu. Investigating officers claimed Sayyed had at least four previous cases against him. However, the judge pointed out that prior approval order and the final sanction order failed to specify the crimes allegedly committed by Sayyed. While Sayyed was sentenced to seven years and a Rs 10,000 fine for robbery, he was granted a set-off for the time already spent in custody. The trial against “gang leader”, Andu, has been separated as he remains untraceable.

KKR’s Cameron Green ‘won’t get suffocated by heavy price tag’, says Shane Watson | Cricket News

KKR’s Cameron Green 'won't get suffocated by heavy price tag', says Shane Watson
Cameron Green (PTI Photo/Shailendra Bhojak)

Mumbai: Over the years, the IPL has seen various top buys burdened by the pressure of their high price tags. In 2014, it was Yuvraj Singh, bought by Royal Challengers Bengaluru for Rs 14 crore, while in 2025, it was Rishabh Pant, purchased by Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 27 crore, who both seemed weighed down by their massive auction prices. There have been many others as well.In that context, there is genuine concern that the latest in the list could be Australian allrounder Cameron Green, who was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping Rs 25.20 crore in the IPL mini-auction in November last year.

IPL 2026: Shubman Gill hits back at critics – ‘I don’t need to prove my worth’

However, ahead of his team’s opening match of IPL-2026 against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night, KKR assistant coach and former Australian allrounder Shane Watson asserted that Green will not be weighed down by his high price tag, pointing out that the Australian allrounder prefers to play with absolute freedom.“I’ve seen players in the past who’ve had a high price tag on them. I’ve seen them crumble in the past; that wave of expectations really suffocated their ability to perform at their best,” Watson told reporters on Saturday, ahead of KKR’s training at the Wankhede Stadium.Watson reminded that Green had been bought by Mumbai Indians and later traded to RCB for a big price and performed fairly well in the past. “Cameron certainly doesn’t see it that way. We’ve seen with him when he got picked up to play here at MI a couple of years ago for a pretty decent amount of money (Green first played the IPL in 2023, when MI bought him for INR 17.5 crore), he had a very good season (he scored 452 runs at a strike rate of 160.28 and picked up six wickets). That is his mindset when it comes to the IPL—that he’s got nothing to lose,” Watson said.“Obviously, that’s what people are willing to pay for him, but he’s there to be as free as he can, be at his very best, and we’ve seen how that has been very beneficial for his performances in the IPL over the last couple of seasons. If you’ve seen the way he’s trained over the last couple of weeks, I don’t think in any way that his performance will be suffocated by that price tag, because he’s very free and excited about being able to be free in the middle as well,” he explained.Watson said joining KKR had been “very exciting” for him, especially because of the opportunity to work closely with Green. “There are a number of exciting things about me coming to KKR. One of the biggest is working with Cameron Green. I’ve had several conversations with him over the years, but being able to help him on his journey and support his growth is something I’m really excited about,” Watson said.Hampered by injuries to pacers Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, who have both been ruled out of IPL-2026, Watson admitted KKR are “doing everything” they can to get Matheesha Pathirana to their camp.“It’s a waiting game at the moment, and we’re being guided by the Sri Lankan cricket board. We are just doing everything we can to get him over here as soon as possible. With the calibre of support staff and medical staff that we’ve got here at KKR, we’ve got the exact same interests as Sri Lankan cricket as well. We want Pathirana to be here. We want him to be fit. We certainly would never, ever push him any earlier than he needs to.“We just hope that sooner rather than later he’s able to come over here and we can really start the integration process,” Watson said.Watson showered praise on Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani, who was drafted into the side a few days before the tournament, and said that KKR were hoping he would capitalise on the opportunity and deliver the goods. “Life’s all about opportunities, and to be able to see someone like Blessing Muzarabani get the opportunity that he’s been working so hard towards with his exploits on the field is fantastic. For a tall guy, he’s a great athlete. He’s got great skills, and for there to be an opportunity for him to put it on the world stage and test himself against the best batters in the world, I’m so excited for him,” Watson said.Watson revealed that KKR’s young top-order batter, Mumbai’s Angkrish Raghuvanshi, has been slogging it out to be ready to don the keeping gloves. “Raghuvanshi has been working tirelessly on his wicketkeeping for the last five or six months.”

Over 3000 J&K govt schools have under 10 students: Minister | India News

Over 3000 J&K govt schools have under 10 students: Minister

SRINAGAR: Over 3,000 govt schools in J&K have had zero or less than 10 students since 2022, education minister Sakina Itoo told the assembly on Saturday.Of the 3,192 such schools,1494 are in Jammu division and 1,698 in Kashmir, National Conference’s (NC) Itoo said in a written reply to a question from BJP legislator RS Pathania. In Jammu, Kathua district has the highest number of such schools at 508. In Kashmir, Baramulla district tops the list of such schools with 396. Srinagar has the lowest number in the Valley with 90 such schools, while Poonch has the lowest in Jammu division with 17.The NC govt also disclosed major infrastructure gaps — 2,698 schools do not have boys’ toilets, 57 lack girls’ toilets, 9,078 schools have no boundary walls, and 10,896 schools lack playgrounds.Pathania called the numbers a “big expose”, arguing the data reflected a lack of public confidence in govt schools. “If people are not enrolling their children in these schools, why are they being opened,” he said, alleging the schools are being run mainly to accommodate teaching staff.Naeem Akhtar, former J&K education minister of PDP, called it a “serious situation” and accused the NC govt of reducing education as an employment scheme for some teachers while neglecting the prime duty of educating students. “Govt’s primary responsibility is human development. This data presents a dismal picture. It is not that there are no students. They are forced to move to private schools because of lack of facilities in govt schools and poor pedagogy,” Akhtar said.Private Schools Association of Jammu and Kashmir (PSAJK) president Baba Nazrul Islam agreed that the data reflects growing preference for private schools due to better infrastructure, accountability and faster decision-making. He cautioned, however, that the govt shouldn’t view private schools as competitors but as “knowledge partners”. “If the govt agrees to collaborate with private schools, the issue can be addressed,” Islam said.

After Zoji La avalanche deaths, Ladakh hill council stakes claim on Zero Point | India News

After Zoji La avalanche deaths, Ladakh hill council stakes claim on Zero Point

SRINAGAR: A day after an avalanche struck at Zero Point at Zoji La, located at an altitude of over 11,500 ft, killing seven people from Kargil and injuring six others, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council-Kargil Saturday accused the Jammu and Kashmir administration of a lax response and urged the govts of Union Territories of Ladakh and J&K to treat Zero Point as part of Ladakh’s territory.Addressing a press conference in Drass, LAHDC-Kargil councillors praised the Army, civil administration and Ladakh Police for prompt rescue efforts and retrieval of bodies from the snow following the accident on Friday afternoon. However, they expressed surprise over “J&K Police investigating the incident on Saturday morning”. While J&K claimed the area to be part of its territory, its administrative machinery was always slow to respond when any mishap occurred there, they alleged. The councillors, in fact, disputed J&K’s claim that Zero Point, stretching about five km, falls under its jurisdiction.J&K officials maintain that Zero Point at Zoji La marks the boundary between Ganderbal district in Kashmir and Kargil district in Ladakh. The councillors, however, said Zero Point is not a boundary, but a location used for snow-clearance operations by two wings of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) — BEACON and Vijayak, handling the Kashmir and the Ladakh sides, respectively. The chief executive councillor of LAHDC-Kargil, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, said since the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of J&K into two UTs on Aug 5, 2019, the boundary at Zoji La had not been demarcated and Zero Point fell under Ladakh’s jurisdiction, he said.Akhoon said heavy vehicles should not have been allowed to move along with light vehicles on Friday, and urged authorities to allow traffic on the Srinagar-Kargil road only before 11 am to reduce the risk of vehicles getting caught in avalanches. “Local wisdom suggests that during March and April, snow begins to melt at Zoji La in the afternoon, increasing the risk of avalanches,” he said. While praising BRO for “doing a commendable job in keeping Zoji La open during winter”, Akhnoor stressed that “better management and consideration of local wisdom are needed” to prevent accidents.
