IPL 2026: Rohit Sharma, Rickelton fire MI to record chase, ending 13-year jinx

Mumbai: At last, the Mumbai Indians have ended their jinx of losing the first match of the IPL, an unwanted habit which they had been carrying for 13 long seasons — from 2013 to 2025. In fact, on Sunday night at the Wankhede Stadium, that unwanted record looked like continuing when the Kolkata Knight Riders raced away to an imposing total of 220 for four after being asked to bat first. However, their openers, South African ‘keeper-bat Ryan Rickelton (81, 43b, 4×4, 8×6) and former captain Rohit Sharma (78, 38b, 6×4, 6×6), who turned the clock back with some furious hitting, blew away KKR with their rollicking 148-run opening stand, which took just 72 balls. The issue was never in doubt, even though the hosts lost a few late wickets. MI’s emphatic six-wicket win in the high-scoring game, which came with five balls to spare, gave much to cheer for their vociferous supporters. The first two days of IPL 2026 have now seen 200-plus totals chased down easily, almost in a farcical manner, which tells you how tough life is getting for the bowlers in the IPL. At the moment, the contest between bat and ball is heavily lopsided in favour of the bat in the league. In a curious development, India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav featured as an Impact Player and chipped in with an eight-ball 16 (3×4). Turning the clock back, Rohit unleashed some big sixes, with his trademark pull shot for a six in the sixth over off Kartik Tyagi standing out, while skipper Hardik Pandya (18 not out off 11 balls, 3×4) finished the job. To make things worse for the visitors, their captain Ajinkya Rahane, who smashed a fine 67 (40b, 3×4, 5×6) earlier, had to leave the field due to cramps, leaving his deputy Rinku Singh to lead the side. What must really worry KKR going forward is also the poor form of their lead spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who conceded 0-48 in four overs and is clearly struggling for rhythm. Earlier, KKR batters across the spectrum, senior batter Rahane and young gun Angkrish Raghuvanshi (51, 29b, 4×4, 2×6), smashed blazing fifties, while New Zealand opener Finn Allen (37 off 18 balls, 6×4, 2×6) and Rinku Singh (33 not out, 21b, 4×4) chipped in with vital cameos to take KKR to a formidable total. On a night which saw Mumbai players hog the limelight in front of their home crowd, Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur was not to be left behind, making a vital contribution to MI’s win. Marking a superb outing for MI, the ‘Palghar Express’ took three for 39 in four overs and was the pick of the bowlers on either side in a game that saw the world’s top pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah go wicketless (0-38 in four overs) for once. Thakur dismissed Allen (caught at wide long-on) in the sixth over to provide MI with a much-needed breakthrough at a point when the KKR openers were going berserk. Using slower balls and his variations cleverly, the 34-year-old then took the scalps of Rs 25.20 cr buy Cameron Green (18, 10b, 1×4, 1×6, caught smartly by a diving Sherfane Rutherford at deep cover), who was making his KKR debut, and Rahane (caught at extra cover off a cross-seam, full delivery bowled outside off stump), to check KKR from running away with the game. KKR were provided an electric start by Rahane, who scored his 34th IPL fifty, and Allen, who had blasted a match-winning unbeaten century against South Africa in the 2026 T20 World Cup semifinal earlier this month, as the opening pair added 69 off just 32 balls to lay the platform for a big total. Playing in his first competitive match in three months — he last turned out for Mumbai on December 16, when he smashed 72 not out off 41 balls to help Mumbai chase down 217 against Rajasthan in Pune in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy — Rahane, who opted out of the Vijay Hazare Trophy and then the second half of the Ranji Trophy during the last domestic season, hardly looked rusty. Batting beautifully, the veteran batsman picked up the length early and unfurled some glorious strokes, with a cover-driven four off Thakur being the pick of the lot. There have been a few who’ve questioned KKR’s decision to make Rahane the captain again this season, but the 37-year-old, who finished as the highest run-getter for KKR last season (390 runs in 13 matches at 35.45, with three fifties), looked in a determined mood to prove his worth. Launching an all-out attack, Allen feasted on long-hops by MI’s debutant Afghanistan spinner Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar (0-57 in four overs), taking two sixes and a four off him in the third over, which went for 17. Rahane then hammered back-to-back sixes off Hardik Pandya off the first two balls of the fourth over, before Allen took three consecutive fours off the MI captain, who conceded 26 in that over.

BJP drops ‘Greater Kashmir’ charge, backs J&K reorganisation bill | India News

BJP drops 'Greater Kashmir' charge, backs J&K reorganisation bill

SRINAGAR: BJP dropped Sunday its earlier “Greater Kashmir” charge and backed a PDP-sponsored territorial reorganisation bill for J&K, while National Conference remained non-committal, calling the proposal a “publicity stunt”.The proposal by PDP legislator Waheed Parra seeks 16 new districts across J&K and two additional divisions in Jammu. J&K currently has two divisions — Jammu and Kashmir — with 10 districts each.BJP said the bill should be tabled for debate, flagging objections only to names “Pir Panjal” and “Chenab Valley” for proposed Rajouri–Poonch and Doda–Kishtwar–Ramban divisions.“There is no harm in creating additional districts and divisions,” BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma said. BJP would push for a third new division combining Udhampur and Reasi, taking the total in Jammu to four, he added. The shift marks a departure from BJP’s earlier position when spokesperson Altaf Thakur had called the bill a conspiracy aimed at turning J&K into “Greater Kashmir”, stressing what he called Pakistan’s 1990s design.NC signalled caution. Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said both Union govt and J&K administration have frozen administrative boundaries till 2027 through a 2025 order. “We support regional empowerment, but any reorganisation must be transparent, data-driven and aligned with census and delimitation,” he said.

Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, the side will be aiming to bounce back from a disappointing previous season where they finished last with just four wins in 14 matches.

Touched by support in city: Ayatollah’s envoy | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Among the mourners who assembled at the iconic Masjid-e-Iranian at Dongri on Sunday to condole the killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei was a little girl. She offered her gold earrings to Abdul Majid Hakeem Ilahi, the representative of Iran’s supreme leader in India, as a way to help the war-hit country.“I was touched. I cried at the girl’s gesture, her pure heart and intention,” said Illahi, who attended condolences at the mosque, Islam Gymkhana near Marine Lines, and Habib Esmail Hospital in Dongri held by Habib Group of Trusts and Mumbai Aman Committee. Ilahi, who has visited Mumbai multiple times, said he was overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of the people in the city which, he stressed, is not just “a financial centre but a cultural centre too”. “If I am not dressed like this (without headgear and black robe), many people think I am an Indian.” A close friend of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, Khamenei’s son, Ilahi described the new Iranian supreme leader as “a simple man who lives in a rented house”. “Once I travelled to Mecca with him and we went to buy shirts. He said he did not have $20 to pay for a shirt and bought a shirt that cost $10. When the shopkeeper found that he was the son of Iran’s supreme leader, he started shouting in disbelief,” recalled Ilahi. He recalled that Khamenei loved India a lot. “Before I came to India, he told me to read up on the history of India and the historical and civilisational relationship India and Iran have. Out of 75 books he wrote, his first book was on India.” When PM Narendra Modi met him, said Ilahi, the meet was scheduled for only 15-20 minutes, but it went on for over an hour as Khamenei discussed India’s rich history and its multicultural society where communities live in harmony. He said Khamenei revered many Indian writers and statesmen, especially Jawaharlal Nehru, who wrote “some wonderful books”. Javed Shroff, chairman, Habib Group of Trusts, said, “War was imposed on Iran, but it must end as war brings disaster.” He told TOI he will send medical help and a team of medical professionals to Iran on humanitarian grounds after consulting Ilahi. Former Navy chief Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat presented a piece of gold sent by his wife, advocate Niloufer Bhagwat.

Kharg of the US brigade: Pentagon lines up troops to capture Iranian island that accounts for 90 per cent of its oil exports

Kharg of the US brigade: Pentagon lines up troops to capture Iranian island that accounts for 90 per cent of its oil exports

The TOI correspondent from Washington: What began as a “little excursion” into Iran – as described by President Trump –- is now edging toward a full-scale invasion of the country, with U.S officials signaling the start of a broader military campaign, including the potential seizure of Kharg Island—Tehran’s most critical oil export hub.In carefully calibrated leaks over the weekend, U.S. officials revealed preparations for a “final blow” against Iran, including movement of thousands of American troops into the region. While the administration has stopped short of confirming a full-scale invasion, the scale and tempo of troop movements suggest a widening conflict over the next few days – unless the leaks constitute a monumental bluff or psy-ops to spook Iran. According to the U.S Central Command, more than 3,500 additional U.S. troops have already been deployed to the Middle East, including roughly 2,500 Marines aboard the USS Tripoli (LHA-7), a modern amphibious assault ship capable of launching F-35 stealth fighters and Osprey aircraft. The vessel, formerly based in Japan, now serves as the flagship of a Marine Expeditionary Unit positioned within range of the Persian Gulf. The Pentagon has also moved elements of the 82nd Airborne Division and is reportedly considering deploying up to 10,000 additional troops. Amphibious assets, including the USS Boxer (LHD-4), are en route, underscoring the administration’s effort to build “maximum optionality,” as officials repeatedly describe it.Administration officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, are sending mixed signals about the maneuvers, seemingly unsure of the President’s thinking. Rubio said the United States could achieve its objectives “without any ground troops,” but added that President Trump must be prepared for multiple contingencies. “It’s the job of the Pentagon to make preparations in order to give the Commander in Chief maximum optionality,” White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said, emphasizing that no final decision has been made.Yet the focus of planning—Kharg Island—reveals much about Washington’s strategic intent. Located just off Iran’s coast in the Persian Gulf, the island handles the vast majority of Iran’s oil exports, much of it directed towards China. Seizing or neutralizing it would strike directly at the country’s economic lifeline and potentially give the United States leverage over global energy flows.Defense analysts say the objective of seizing Kharg is not territorial conquest in the traditional sense, but about choking off Teheran’s revenues, controlling maritime routes, and denying Iran the ability to threaten shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Roughly a fifth of the world’s oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, and any disruption has immediate ripple effects. Already, the conflict has driven up fuel prices, disrupted commercial aviation, and rattled global markets.By targeting Iran’s infrastructure, Washington could reshape global energy markets and indirectly pressure major buyers such as China, which relies heavily on Iranian oil. Some analysts argue the move is tied to a wider strategy aimed at constraining Beijing’s strategic options, including its posture toward Taiwan.Military experts concede that any attempt to seize Kharg Island would be complex and risky. Unlike inland targets, the island is exposed, making it vulnerable to Iranian missile strikes, drone attacks, and naval harassment. Holding it would require sustained air superiority and naval protection, as well as a steady flow of reinforcements and supplies. Experts also warn that even a limited operation could escalate quickly. Iran, despite what U.S. and Israeli officials describe as a degraded military capacity, has continued to strike back. Low-level but persistent attacks on American assets in the region—targeting aircraft, missile defense systems, and naval units—have kept tensions high and demonstrated Tehran’s ability to impose costs. Tehran has also warned of a “punitive response” if its territory is seized. Analysts point to the country’s history, including its protracted war with Iraq in the 1980s, as evidence of its willingness to absorb heavy losses while sustaining a fight.Still, critics argue the administration is courting a wider war without a clear endgame. Over the weekend, nationwide “No Kings” rallies — the third such demonstrations since Trump took office for a second term — revealed growing opposition to the war across the U.S., including in MAGA circles which embraced the President’s promise not to get into needless foreign wars. President Trump, for his part, continues to essay erratic statements, sometimes insisting there will be “no deal” with Iran short of “unconditional surrender” and at other times saying the “War is almost over” amid an expanding military buildup. While officials – many of them unsure of the President’s motivation — maintain that diplomacy remains possible, the steady buildup of forces suggests the Pentagon is preparing for a scenario in which talks fail.
