Rupee tumbles 9.88% in FY26, worst annual fall in 14 years - what lies ahead?

The Indian rupee depreciated 9.88 per cent against the US dollar in FY26, marking its steepest annual decline in 14 years, according to market data as reported PTI.The last comparable fall was in FY12, when the domestic currency had dropped 12.4 per cent amid a widening current account deficit of 4.2 per cent. The sharp depreciation in FY26 was driven by persistent foreign fund outflows, elevated crude oil prices and a strengthening US dollar. Volatility in global financial markets and tightening liquidity conditions further added to the pressure on the currency.Other Asian currencies also weakened against the dollar during the period, with the Japanese yen declining 6 per cent, the Philippine peso falling 5.74 per cent, and the South Korean won slipping 2.88 per cent since April 1, according to market participants.Sunal Sodhani, head of treasury at Shinhan Bank India, described FY26 as a “perfect storm” of external shocks, capital outflows and structural vulnerabilities, noting that the drivers of the current depreciation differ from those seen in FY12.“Unlike FY12 (which was more domestic plus taper tantrum-led), FY26 depreciation is externally driven by oil, geopolitics, capital flight, and amplified by India’s import dependence,” PTI quoted Sodhani as saying. The initial weakness in the rupee was triggered after the US imposed tariffs on India, which led to a surge in demand for the dollar. The situation worsened with the escalation of the West Asia conflict, pushing crude oil prices higher and intensifying pressure on the domestic currency. The tariffs also weighed on equity and debt markets, resulting in sustained foreign capital outflows. The rupee has since touched successive record lows, breaching the psychological mark of 95 against the US dollar, despite interventions by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).To support the currency, the RBI has sold $55.073 billion in the spot market till January in FY26.The central bank has also introduced regulatory measures to curb excessive speculation. On Friday, the RBI said banks can hold only up to $100 million in net open positions in the onshore currency market at the end of each trading day, effective April 10.The move briefly supported the rupee in early trade on Monday, though gains were later erased due to strong dollar demand from oil companies and corporates, traders said. The currency witnessed high volatility during the session, swinging 165 paise intra-day as the West Asia crisis entered its 31st day. It eventually closed 7 paise higher at 94.78 against the dollar after touching an intra-day low beyond 95.“Rupee rose, but again fell due to some big corporate buying, squaring up of position in NDF, Nationalised banks buying and oil companies buying,” said Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP.Market participants expect the rupee to remain volatile going ahead.“Outlook depends on three variables: oil, flows, and global rates. The new normal is higher volatility plus gradual depreciation, not stability around a fixed band. In FY27, for the USD/INR pair, 92-97 remains the broader range play,” Sodhani added.

New Delhi: All India Football Federation (AIFF) Executive Committee member and chairperson of the Women’s Football Committee Valanka Alemao Churchill has alleged that she was ‘targeted’, heckled’ and ‘harassed’ by the governing body’s top brass for raising concerns over procedural irregularities. In a statement, the AIFF has denied these claims. The alleged incident took place during AIFF’s Executive Committee meeting in New Delhi on March 29.

ISL commercial rights: AIFF get two different bids

In her letter to fellow Executive Committee members, Alemao has criticised AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, Vice President NA Harris and Deputy General Secretary M Satyanarayan.“I wish to place on record the entirely disgusting behaviour of the AIFF President Mr Kalyan Chaubey, Vice President Mr N. A. Haris and Deputy Secretary General M Satyanarayan….I feel deeply prejudiced and I found that several attempts were made by the President to suppress my voice…,” Valanka, the only female member on AIFF’s Executive Committee, wrote in an email.“The President made remarks against me which were unnecessary and disrespectful. He along with the DSG raised his tone time and again beyond an acceptable decibel with the intention to intimidate me…..Throughout the course of the meeting, I was consistently targeted.”In the recent past, Alemao had raised multiple irregularities in Indian football. She questioned the fact that members were not kept in the loop for the commercial rights tender document.“I feel deeply prejudiced and I found that several attempts were made by the President to suppress my voice. However, for the interest of the sport, I believe that it is imperative for me to highlight the incidents to ensure that such actions are not repeated in the subsequent meetings,” she wrote in the email.“As an executive committee member, I have the power and responsibility to enquire about important agreements, provide feedback and voice my dissent on decisions that are unconstitutional and illegal,” she continued.“In the meeting I was informed that I do not have the right to seek details on the operations of the federation,” she said.“I believe that my concerns on the procedural irregularities over the past few months has perturbed few members. And it is deeply concerning to note that during this meeting decisions were taken and approvals were sought without considering the powers of the general body.”Alemao had also slammed the AIFF officials for poor preparations that hurt India women’s team during the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Ahead of the tournament earlier this month in Australia, players and coaching staff had received poorly fitting jerseys and became a moment of global embarrassment.AIFF denies claims, says Alemao has vested interestsIn a statement later in the day, AIFF denied these allegations and accused the Churchill Brothers’ CEO Alemao of trying to force her way into the Indian Super League ‘through exceptional means.’“The AIFF categorically rejects the recent claims made by Executive Committee Ms. Valanka Alemao and wishes to place certain facts on record in the interest of transparency and clarity,” it said in a statement.“The AIFF reiterates that all meetings and decisions of the federation are conducted strictly in accordance with its Articles of Association and established procedures.”Churchill Brothers are currently embroiled in a legal mess with the AIFF for not getting promoted last season. The Goan club has also accused AIFF chief Kalyan Chaubey for conflict of interest with Delhi High Court hearing the proceedings.“Following this, several legal petitions were filed by members of Ms. Alemao’s family. Despite being an Executive Committee member of the AIFF, Ms. Alemao repeatedly attempted to influence proceedings during official meetings with the objective of securing the inclusion of her club in the ISL,” AIFF said.

Mumbai sessions court nixes ‘perverse order’: NIC app helps put habitual offender back in jail | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The National Informatics Centre (NIC)-developed e-Sakshya app has helped police put a habitual offender back in jail. The app which helps police record and upload crime scene evidence, including searches and seizures, directly to the cloud, led to a sessions court setting aside a magistrate’s “perverse order” releasing a habitual offender on the grounds of an illegal arrest. While the accused, Arvind Sodha, claimed he could not understand the grounds of arrest as it was communicated in Marathi, the court noted that video recordings of the accused’s statement had been uploaded to the “E-Sakshya App”, which showed his comprehension of the language.“Moreover, the accused is born and brought up in Mumbai. So also, he has studied in a Marathi medium school… and he had Marathi language from fifth to ninth standards. All the facts are sufficient to hold that the magistrate, without making any inquiry, released the hardened criminal, and the order of release is perverse and the same is required to be set aside for giving an opportunity to the investigation officer to investigate the matter,” additional sessions judge Mujibodeen S Shaikh said recently. The sessions judge said the magistrate blindly believed the statement of a habitual criminal against whom 14 cases including those for murder, attempt to murder and under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) have been registered. Sodha was arrested in an extortion, criminal intimidation and house trespass case filed at Mankhurd police station. The magistrate’s court granted his release on Feb 4. Seeking cancellation of his release, the state argued the magistrate ignored the accused’s educational background and digital evidence proving his linguistic proficiency. The judge directed Sodha to surrender before the investigating officer for probe and remand. “If the respondent (Sodha) will not surrender himself before the IO within two weeks, then the IO may arrest the accused and produce him before the magistrate after mandatory compliance of the legal provision,” the judge said. The state challenged the earlier decision, arguing the magistrate failed to conduct a proper inquiry into whether the accused truly misunderstood the Marathi language or was simply using it as a tactic to avoid custody. The dispute centred on the mandatory communication of the grounds of arrest under BNSS. The prosecution presented records showing Sodha was born and raised in Mumbai and attended Swami Vivekanand Vidyalay, where Marathi was a compulsory subject from the fifth to ninth grades. The sessions judge observed the lower court had acted prematurely by accepting the accused’s statement at face value. “If the magistrate would have been given the opportunity to the IO then he would have produced the recording of the statement of accused which is uploaded on e-Sakshya App.In 2024, Sodha was also booked in the murder case of MCOCA accused Chirag Loke. Loke was fatally attacked with iron rods in Nerul by four me on Feb 13, 2024.

Naseem Shah slapped with ‘largest fine in Pakistan cricket history’ for post on Maryam Nawaz | Cricket News

Naseem Shah slapped with 'largest fine in Pakistan cricket history' for post on Maryam Nawaz

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday fined Naseem Shah 20 million Pakistani rupees for posting tweets that were found to be in violation of his central contract.According to ESPNcricinfo, this was the ‘the largest fine in Pakistan cricket history’.The board said its disciplinary committee held Shah guilty of breaching contract clauses and acting irresponsibly on social media. He was issued a show-cause notice on March 27, shortly after Pakistan Punjab’s chief minister Maryam Nawaz attended the opening match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.Maryam Nawaz had been invited as chief guest and was introduced to officials of the eight franchises and players before the match between Lahore Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen.Shah later posted on X, “Why is she treated like the queen at Lord’s?” in reference to her presence at the venue. He deleted the post soon after and claimed that his account had been hacked.Following the notice from the PCB, Shah issued an unconditional apology and appeared before a three-member disciplinary committee in Lahore on Monday. The PCB said that Shah was found “to have breached various clauses of his central contract.”“It was noted that Naseem Shah’s social media adviser has already been terminated by Naseem and shall be blacklisted by the PCB from associating with any player falling under the PCB’s jurisdiction,” the board said. The development comes during a PSL season affected by wider regional issues. As part of the fallout from the conflict in Iran, spectators have not been allowed at matches, and the tournament has been reduced from six venues to two — Lahore and Karachi. Rising fuel prices have led the government to advise limited travel and work-from-home measures.Last year, Pakistan all-rounder Aamer Jamal was fined $4,000 for displaying a slogan in support of former prime minister Imran Khan.Shah is currently playing for Rawalpindi Pindiz and had figures of 0 for 51 in a five-wicket loss to Peshawar Zalmi. The right-arm fast bowler has taken 152 wickets for Pakistan across formats, including 20 Tests, 34 ODIs and 37 T20 internationals.

US and Iran put water in line of fire on top of oil

US and Iran put water in line of fire on top of oil

TOI correspondent from Washington: US President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to annihilate Iran as a nation, threatening its drinking water infrastructure, energy grid, and its oil wells unless it capitulated in ongoing talks – which Teheran denies are taking place. In a series of confounding posts and statements that appeared to be aimed at turning the heat on a defiant Iran, Trump, taunted by critics who say he has led the US into another needless war, said Washington is in “serious discussions with A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME to end our Military Operations in Iran,” without identifying the interlocutors.

Trump FINALLY Reveals ‘BULLETPROOF’ White House Ballroom With Secret Bunker, ‘Stairs To Nowhere’

“Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately “Open for Business,” we will conclude our lovely “stay” in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet “touched,” Trump warned in a social media post. In separate remarks to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said he would decimate Iran if it did not hand over “nuclear dust” ( uranium) while claiming Teheran has almost surrendered and offered the US 20 boats laden with oil as a “tribute.” “If they don’t do that (give its nuclear quest) they are not going to have a country,” Trump said in an explicit threat of annihilation even amid claims of diplomatic outreach.Given the lack of a clear chain of command in Teheran, mainly on account of its leadership being targeted for assassination, it was not clear who the US is talking to in or from Iran. Teheran has repeatedly denied it is participating in any talks, including the one Pakistan is purported to host. Trump’s threat to decimate Iran’s infrastructure came even as Iran defiantly continued to strike US assets in the region despite its military being attrited by American and Israeli strikes. In a dangerous escalation that brought the region’s drinking water infrastructure under fire on top of oil assets under attack, Kuwait accused Iran of bombing its desalination plants, a charge Teheran denied and claimed it was Israel which had attacked the water plants to blame Iran for it. Many of the region’s countries depend on desalination plants for their drinking water needs (90 per cent in the case of Kuwait) and any targeting of such plants, whether by the US or Israel or Iran, is liable to be treated as a war crime. Many such plants are run by workers from India, one of whom is believed to have died in the attack on a Kuwaiti plant over the weekend. Trump’s public threat to hit desalination plants constitutes an unprecedented escalation, coming on top of US attacks on educational institutions – authenticated by the western media – that have killed scores of students. Trump’s war on Iran, viewed as reckless by scores of American critics, is hugely unpopular in the US, including among his MAGA base. Following yet another purported strike on an Iranian university, Tehran warned on Monday that if Washington did not condemn such attacks, it reserved the right to strike back at US institutions in the Middle East, causing Qatar, an academic hub in the region, to evacuate all student housing in Doha’s “Education City.” US universities such as Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, and Texas A&M have campuses in Doha.Though enfeebled by the US and Israeli attacks, Iran also warned that it would hit back at residences of US and Israeli officials and politicians in the region after being subjected to targeted assassination of its leadership. While Trump has repeatedly claimed that Iran has already been decimated and is close to surrendering, Tehran has landed an occasional blow to US assets in the region, including the reported hit on Saturday at the Prince Sultan Air base in Saudi Arabia that destroyed an E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft, one of just 16 in the US fleet and a key flying command center for tracking threats over 250 miles.

‘Profound implications’: Oil at $40 or $150? BlackRock’s Larry Fink explains two scenarios amid US-Iran war

‘Profound implications’: Oil at $40 or $150? BlackRock’s Larry Fink explains two scenarios amid US-Iran war

The ongoing Iran war, now nearing four weeks with no clear resolution, is already pushing oil prices above $100 per barrel, with visible impact on fuel and household costs. Against this backdrop, Larry Fink, chairman and CEO of BlackRock, has outlined two sharply divergent paths for oil markets and the global economy.Speaking to the BBC, Fink said the conflict could either ease, leading to a sharp fall in oil prices, or persist, keeping crude elevated for years. “I could paint a scenario where I could see, a year from now, oil at $40 a barrel… I could see it above $150. We have two very extreme outcomes,” he said. The impact is already being felt in the US, where the national average price of gasoline has climbed to nearly $4 per gallon, up more than $1 in March alone and 27% higher year-on-year, according to AAA.Best-case scenario: Oil collapse if conflict easesIn the more optimistic scenario, the war would end, Iran would reintegrate into global markets, and the Strait of Hormuz — a critical oil transit route — would reopen. This could release significant oil supply into global markets.Using estimates from the US Energy Information Administration, where every $1 change in oil prices translates to about 2.4 cents per gallon in fuel prices, a fall to $40 per barrel could push gasoline prices down to around $2.40 per gallon — levels last seen during the post-pandemic phase. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which carries about 20% of global oil supply, has already caused what the International Energy Agency describes as the largest supply disruption in oil market history. Reopening it remains central to easing global price pressures.Fink suggested that if Iran becomes part of the global economic system again, combined with increased supply from countries like Venezuela, oil prices could fall even below pre-war levels.

Worst-case scenario: Prolonged high oil, inflation shock

In contrast, if the conflict continues and geopolitical tensions remain elevated, oil prices could stay above $100 and even move toward $150 per barrel.Fink warned that such a scenario would have wide-ranging consequences. “I would argue that we could have years… above $100, closer to $150 oil which has profound implications in the economy,” he said.At those levels, US gasoline prices could exceed $5 per gallon, significantly raising transportation and logistics costs. Higher diesel and energy prices would also feed into food inflation, given their role in supply chains and fertiliser production. He added that the divergence between the two scenarios is stark: “The $40 oil implication is one of abundance and growth and the other one is an outcome of probably a stark and steep recession”.

Market implications and investor outlook

The uncertainty around oil prices is also influencing financial markets. Rising yields and inflation expectations have already shifted expectations around interest rate cuts.In his annual letter to investors, Fink noted that market volatility often coincides with strong long-term returns. “Over time, staying invested has mattered far more than getting the timing right… Miss just the ten best days, and you would have earned less than half,” he wrote. As the conflict continues, the trajectory of oil prices– and by extension inflation, growth and financial markets – will hinge on whether geopolitical tensions ease or deepen further.(With inputs from agencies)

WATCH: Nandre Burger produces jaffa to clean up Sanju Samson during RR vs SRH clash in IPL 2026

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 continues to deliver unforgettable moments, and one of the most jaw-dropping came during the clash between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

Nandre Burger stuns Sanju Samson with a dream delivery

In a moment that silenced the crowd, RR pacer Nandre Burger produced a stunning delivery to dismiss Sanju Samson for just six runs on his debut outing for CSK. What was expected to be a big occasion for Samson quickly turned into a nightmare, as Burger’s brilliance stole the spotlight.

Opening the batting in new colours, Samson looked cautious early on, perhaps still settling into the role. But in the second over, Burger charged in and delivered a ball that every fast bowler dreams of.

Clocked at 140.2 kmph, the delivery pitched on a good length and subtly moved away after pitching. Samson, looking to flick it toward the leg side, misread the line completely. The ball zipped past his bat and crashed into the off stump, sending the bails flying.

There was no reaction from Samson for a moment – just disbelief. His feet stayed planted, his bat nowhere near the ball. It was the kind of delivery that leaves even the best batters helpless, and Burger knew it immediately, celebrating what could already be one of the balls of the tournament.

CSK collapse after Samson’s early departure

Samson’s early departure wasn’t just another wicket – it marked the end of an incredible streak. Since 2020, the wicketkeeper-batter had scored a fifty or more in every IPL season opener, consistently setting the tone for his team year after year.

From a blazing 74 in 2020 to a century in 2021 and multiple fifties in the seasons that followed, Samson had built a reputation for starting strong. But IPL 2026 told a different story. His score of 6 (7) not only ended the streak but also highlighted how quickly fortunes can change in T20 cricket.

The context made the moment even more dramatic. Samson was facing his former franchise, RR, a team he had represented for over a decade and led as captain. Having moved to CSK in a high-profile trade involving Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, there was immense anticipation around his debut.

Instead, it was Burger who owned the narrative.

Samson’s wicket triggered a collapse at the top. CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad fell soon after, dismissed cheaply by Jofra Archer.

Here’s the video:

The pressure intensified when youngster Ayush Mhatre was dismissed for a golden duck – again by Burger.

Within the first three overs, CSK found themselves reeling at 19 for 3, completely on the back foot. Moving ahead, RR bowlers offered no relief as the Super Kings were bundled out for just 127 in 19.4 overs.

Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau to step down by Q3 over English-only message controversy

Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau to step down by Q3 over English-only message controversy

Air Canada on Monday said CEO Michael Rousseau will retire by the end of the third quarter, with the announcement coming against the backdrop of criticism over his handling of communications after a fatal accident, Reuters reported. The controversy stemmed from a condolence message issued following a collision involving an Air Canada Express aircraft and a fire truck at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, which killed both pilots and left dozens injured. The message, delivered largely in English, drew sharp reactions in bilingual Canada.Prime Minister Mark Carney said last week the episode reflected poor judgment by the airline’s top executive. The development has fast-tracked an already planned leadership transition, with the carrier confirming that the process to identify a successor is underway.Rousseau, 68, has been with Air Canada for nearly two decades and oversaw its recovery from the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, his tenure also saw criticism over operational issues, including a four-day strike by flight attendants last year that disrupted hundreds of flights. The latest backlash also revived earlier concerns around language use. In 2021, Rousseau had apologised after delivering a speech primarily in English in Montreal, despite the city being in French-speaking Quebec.Language remains a politically sensitive issue in Quebec, where concerns over English dominance have historically influenced regional politics, including support for the separatist Parti Quebecois.Air Canada, though a listed company, operates under the Official Languages Act, which mandates that it provide services in both English and French. The Quebec provincial legislature last week passed a non-binding motion urging Rousseau to step down, citing what lawmakers described as a lack of respect for the French language. Elections in the province are due later this year. The episode also comes at a time when airline chiefs globally are expected to directly address the public following fatal incidents. In January 2025, American Airlines CEO Robert Isom issued a video statement expressing “deep sorrow” after a midair collision involving one of its regional jets and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport killed 67 people.

Who is Kartik Sharma? Rs 14.2 crore CSK signing fails to fire on IPL debut | Cricket News

Who is Kartik Sharma? Rs 14.2 crore CSK signing fails to fire on IPL debut

Chennai Super Kings handed debuts to four players in their first IPL 2026 match against Rajasthan Royals on Monday, with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad confirming at the toss that Sanju Samson, Kartik Sharma, Matt Henry and Matt Short would feature in the playing XI.However, Samson and Short could not make an impact in their first outing for CSK. Samson was bowled by Nandre Burger while attempting a leg-side flick. The delivery, clocked at 140.2 kmph, moved away and hit the off stump as he departed for 6 off 7 balls.Short also fell early, with Sandeep Sharma having him caught at midwicket by Yashasvi Jaiswal. With wickets falling at the top, Kartik Sharma came in to bat at number six in the sixth over. Kartik Sharma too failed on his IPL debut as he was out Lbw by another IPL debutant, Brijesh Sharma. Kartik was dismissed for 18 runs off 15 balls.

Who is Kartik Sharma?

Kartik’s journey into the IPL has roots in his early years in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. His father, Manoj Kumar, had wanted to become a cricketer himself and pushed his son towards the sport. “He was five, holding a plastic bat in his hands, and his words were: ‘Sir, chakke maarne waala cricketer banna hai’ (I want to be known as a six-hitter),” Lokendra Singh Chahar, who has trained his son Deepak Chahar and nephew Rahul Chahar, had earlier told TimesofIndia.com.A wicketkeeper-batter known for hitting sixes, Kartik became the joint-most expensive uncapped Indian player at an IPL auction when CSK signed him for Rs 14.2 crore. He was the joint-highest six-hitter in the first phase of the 2025-26 Ranji season and the top six-hitter in the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He also finished the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season as the joint third-highest six-hitter. After being part of CSK’s wider squad in IPL 2025, he earned a place in the main squad for IPL 2026.In the match, Rajasthan Royals won the toss and chose to bowl first. Captain Riyan Parag said the decision was due to wet conditions after recent rain.At the time of writing, CSK were 74 for 7 in 11 overs.
