CBI quizzes 3 ex-senior execs of Anil Ambani group in fraud probe

NEW DELHI: Deepening its investigation into the alleged multi-crore fraud involving Reliance Communications (RCOM) and State Bank of India (SBI), CBI has questioned three former top-tier executives of the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group. The agency issued summons to Satish Seth and Gautam Doshi, both former group managing directors, for examination in connection with the FIR registered following a formal complaint by SBI. This followed the questioning of a third former group managing director, Amitabh Jhunjhunwala.Seth, who previously held the position of vice-chairman at Reliance Infrastructure Ltd and served on the board of Reliance Telecom Ltd (RTL), was questioned alongside Doshi, who was also a board member of RTL. Sources said that the CBI examined Jhunjhunwala over a three-day period leading up to the scheduled appearance of Anil Ambani on March 19 and 20.Jhunjhunwala, a longtime confidant of the group, formerly served as the vice-chairman of Reliance Capital. The three executives were central figures in the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group for over 15 years. Both Seth and Jhunjhunwala were veterans of the undivided Reliance Group, having been associated with Reliance Industries Limited for more than two decades prior to the highprofile corporate demerger. All three have since moved on to independent ventures. Jhunjhunwala is currently an independent fund manager with operations in Dubai and Singapore. Seth is now engaged in real estate and software ventures. Doshi, officials said, currently leads a prominent tax and mergers and acquisitions advisory firm, in addition to serving on the boards of major companies. When contacted, the Reliance group refused to comment saying these officials were not with the company anymore. The Supreme Court had earlier asked CBI to file separate FIRs into complaints of different banks against Anil Ambani group companies.Last year, CBI filed a case against M/s Reliance Communications based on a complaint lodged by the SBI, which is the lead bank of a consortium consisting of 11 banks, in an alleged fraud case of Rs 2,929 crore.According to the CBI, the complaint is based on a forensic audit report that alleges large-scale diversion and misuse of loan funds through interlinked and circuitous transactions among group entities during the period 2013-17, resulting in wrongful loss of Rs 2,929 crore to SBI out of total exposure of Rs 19,694 crore involving 17 public sector banks.

In call with Iran president, PM Modi slams infra attacks, says ship lanes must stay open

NEW DELHI: With the conflict in the West Asia region threatening to engulf energy infrastructure, and amid concerns about a possible LPG crisis at home, PM Modi spoke to the Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, for the second time since the start of military hostilities and reiterated the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and ensuring that shipping lanes remain open and secure. In a post on X, Modi said he also condemned attacks on critical infrastructure “in the region”, which threaten regional stability and disrupt global supply chains. While Modi has explicitly condemned violation of sovereignty and territorial integrity of GCC countries, which are important for India’s energy and diaspora interests, he has not condemned the US-Israel attacks on Iran. However, in his last conversation with Pezeshkian, Modi told him that India was Iran’s friend.

Pezeshkian also again urged India, as the current Brics chair, to leverage its “independent role” to halt the US-Israel hostilities against Iran. He further underscored that a prerequisite for ending the war is the immediate cessation of aggression by US and Israel, along with guarantees against their recurrence in the future, according to an Iranian readout of the talks.Separately, foreign minister S Jaishankar spoke to his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi and discussed the conflict in West Asia and its implications for the larger region. The conflict saw a dramatic escalation this week with Israel attacking Iran’s South Pars gas field and Tehran retaliating with strikes on Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, a global LNG hub. Modi had spoken to the Qatar Amir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and leaders of other GCC countries and condemned the attacks on energy infrastructure in the region. On the attacks on energy installations, the PM has restricted himself to denouncing attacks “in the region” and not named any country. After the attack on its gas field, Iran had targeted energy hubs in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and UAE, apart from Qatar. On Saturday, the PM also extended Eid and Nowruz greetings to Pezeshkian. “We expressed hope that this festive season brings peace, stability and prosperity to West Asia,” he said, while also thanking Iran for ensuring the safety and security of Indian nationals.

In what has been described as one of the deadliest airstrikes carried out by Pakistan on Afghanistan, at least 400 people were killed and around 250 others were injured. Afghanistan’s deputy government spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat said the strike hit a drug rehabilitation hospital, damaging large parts of the 2,000-bed facility. Pakistan has denied the allegations.Ghazanfar highlighted the importance of the facility, stressing that it provided crucial support to vulnerable sections of society. “The people there don’t have money for treatment,” Ghazanfar told CNN News18. “And now, they’ve targeted that place as well; they’ve martyred those people. This is not acceptable to the people of Afghanistan.” Strongly condemning the attack, he also questioned the intent behind such military actions. “I don’t know what they’re trying to prove. They come and target ordinary people, and we simply cannot accept this. Afghanistan cannot accept this,” he said in the interview. “Everyone knows Afghanistan’s history,” he warned. “If that history repeats itself, it will be very bad for Pakistan.”The spinner is yet to make his IPL debut and has featured in 20 matches for Afghanistan so far, picking up 29 wickets across formats.

Over 100 injured in Israel amid Iran’s missile attack; Netanyahu calls it ‘difficult evening in battle for future’

Over 100 injured in Israel amid Iran's missile attack; Netanyahu calls it 'difficult evening in battle for future'
Missile Strikes on Israel (Image credit: Israel foreign ministry on X)

More than 100 people, including children, were injured after Iranian missile strikes hit the southern Israeli towns of Arad and Dimona, Tel Aviv authorities said, with significant damage reported to residential areas. The strikes, which Israeli officials said followed a failure of air defence systems to intercept incoming projectiles, left 75 people injured in Arad, including 10 in serious condition, hours after 33 were wounded in nearby Dimona, according to medics.Emergency responders described extensive destruction at both sites, with residential buildings torn open and large craters formed by the impact. Firefighters said interceptors were launched but failed to neutralise the ballistic missiles, which carried warheads weighing hundreds of kilograms.Emergency service Magen David Adom said it evacuated dozens of injured people to hospitals.“Among them are 10 patients in serious condition, 13 patients in moderate condition, and 48 patients in mild condition,” the agency said.In Dimona, which hosts a sensitive nuclear facility, medics treated 33 injured, including a 10-year-old boy with serious shrapnel wounds. Iranian state television described the strike as a “response” to an earlier attack on Iran’s Natanz nuclear site.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had spoken with Maayan and directed government agencies to provide assistance.“This is a very difficult evening in the battle for our future. Just a short while ago, I spoke with the Mayor of Arad, Yair Maayan, and asked him to convey, on behalf of all Israeli citizens, our prayers for the peace of the injured. I have instructed the Director General of my office to provide all the necessary assistance together with all government ministries,” Netanyahu said.“I strengthen the emergency and rescue forces operating in the field right now, and I call on everyone to heed the instructions of the Home Front Command. We are determined to continue to strike our enemies on all fronts,” he added. The Israeli Foreign Ministry accused Iran of deliberately targeting civilians.“The Iranian regime devastated Arad and Dimona by deliberately striking civilians with missiles. Over 100 people were injured, including children. A blatant war crime. Pure terrorism,” the Ministry said in a post on X.Arad Mayor Yair Maayan said around 150 families were evacuated from the affected neighbourhood following the strike.Former prime ministers Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid also condemned the attack. Bennett said, “Our hearts are now in Arad and Dimona. Praying together for the peace of the injured and their families.”Lapid added, “Our hearts are with the south this evening. A great disaster with dozens of wounded in Dimona and Arad. Strengthening the security and rescue forces who are working at this moment to save lives. And wishing a speedy recovery to the wounded. We are all with you.”The Israeli military said it would investigate the failure of its air defence systems. “The air defence systems operated but did not intercept the missile, we will investigate the incident and learn from it,” military spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin said on X.Iran has launched repeated missile barrages at Israel in recent days in retaliation for US-Israeli strikes that began on February 28.

Chaos After Death of Cow Vigilante on Delhi-Agra Highway: Protests and Clashes Erupt in Mathura | Agra News

Mathura witnessed significant chaos on the Delhi-Agra Highway following the death of cow vigilante Chandrashekhar

MATHURA: Massive chaos erupted on the Delhi–Agra Highway in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura after the death of a cow vigilante triggered protests, stone-pelting, and clashes with police, leaving several personnel injured and vehicles vandalised. The unrest followed the killing of Chandrashekhar, popularly known as “Farsa Wale Baba,” a local cow protection activist, who died during a late-night chase near Navipur village under Kosi Kalan police limits. According to initial reports, he was pursuing a truck on his motorcycle after suspecting cattle smuggling when a vehicle allegedly rammed into him, killing him on the spot. However, Mathura SSP Shlok Kumar said the incident may have been accidental. “The truck that Pharsa Baba stopped contained grocery goods, and the truck that collided with him was loaded with wire. This truck is from Rajasthan. The accident happened due to dense fog. Action is ongoing,” he said, indicating that claims of cattle smuggling are still being verified.Soon after news of the death spread, locals and cow vigilantes gathered in large numbers and blocked the Delhi–Agra Highway in the Chhata area early Friday, leading to long traffic snarls and disruption for several hours. The protest quickly escalated as angry demonstrators clashed with police.Stone-pelting was reported during the confrontation, with several police personnel and dozens of locals injured. Around half a dozen police vehicles were vandalised in the violence. Authorities said the situation worsened after police attempted to disperse the crowd, leading to further tensions.Police confirmed that one accused was apprehended at the scene and handed over by locals, while three others managed to flee. Search operations are underway to trace the absconding suspects.Chandrashekhar was known in the Braj region for his involvement in cow protection activities, and his death sparked grief and anger among supporters. Some local leaders said protesters were eventually persuaded to disperse after officials intervened and appealed for calm.Amid the escalating situation, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the incident and ordered strict action against those responsible.“The accused will not be spared under any circumstances,” the chief minister said, directing officials to ensure swift justice and maintain law and order.Heavy police deployment has been made in the area to prevent further unrest, and authorities are examining the vehicles involved while continuing to verify the sequence of events, including the initial claims of cattle smuggling.Officials have urged the public to maintain peace as the investigation continues, even as the incident once again highlights the volatile nature of confrontations involving vigilante groups on suspicion of cattle transport.

Akash Deep’s injury turns into major headache for KKR and Abhishek Nayar

KKR suffer another major blow in their bowling department as the Bengal pacer has been ruled out of the race for IPL 2026. The pacer stars for Bengal in the domestic structure of Indian cricket and has represented India internationally.

The IPL has been transformed into the Injured Players League for the Kolkata Knight Riders, as even before the start of their campaign, they have been trashed. Akash Deep has formerly played for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (then Royal Challengers Bangalore) and the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL.

KKR suffer another injury blow ahead of IPL 2026

The Kolkata Knight Riders campaign already faced a massive blow after Harshit Rana was ruled out of IPL 2026. The Indian pacer struggled with an injury ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup; hence, the player was also ruled out of the World Cup squad.

His recovery has been delayed, and hence he has been ruled out. Another player whose participation is also uncertain includes the Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana, who was picked for a whopping INR 18 crores. Even if he were to be cleared to play, that would be nowhere before mid-April.

Now, Cricbuzz reported that Indian pacer Akash Deep, who was bought at his base price in the mini-auction, is also ruled out from IPL 2026 following an injury. Akash Deep was supposed to be Rana’s replacement in the KKR camp.

Akash Deep is currently undergoing rehab at CoE

Akash Deep was picked at his base price of INR 1 crore; however, the Bengal pacer has now been ruled out of the IPL as one of the top officials in the KKR camp confirmed that development. “Unfortunately, he is out of the IPL, ruled out for the season,” the KKR official said.

Akash Deep has not reported to the Kolkata Knight Riders camp, which is being held at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, since the 18th of March. The reason for this is that he is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, although the exact nature of his injury remains unclear.

It has been revealed that the managers at the CoE have constantly been in touch with the franchise. Akash Deep has featured in 14 IPL matches and has claimed 10 scalps. However, his price dipped significantly after he was bought for INR 8 crores in 2025 by LSG.

KKR’s IPL schedule for 2026

The Champions from 2024 will kickstart their campaign in the IPL in 2026, with their first match scheduled to be played against the Mumbai Indians. They will kickstart their campaign at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

The three-time champions would then go on to play in their second game of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad on the 2nd of April at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. They will then go on to host the runners-up from the last season, the Punjab Kings, on the 6th of April.

KKR will also host their fourth match of the season against Lucknow Super Giants on the 9th of April. The remainder of the schedule would be announced later, keeping the elections in mind.

Foggy Saturday morning gives Delhi Jan-like feeling in March; another rain spell likely on 23rd | Delhi News

Foggy Saturday morning gives Delhi Jan-like feeling in March; another rain spell likely on 23rd

NEW DELHI: A day after weather broke several records under the impact of consistent rain, Delhi woke up to a foggy morning, akin to that in Jan, across the national capital. According to weather analysts, the fog during morning hours was temporary condensation due to the confluence of factors that involved remaining moisture from a day earlier aided by the moisture-laden winds on Saturday morning, overnight cooling due to clear sky following days of overcast weather. “Overnight the sky remained clear, which led to cooling of the ground. That is one of the reasons that minimum temperature fell drastically to 13 degrees Celsius, which is normally seen in Feb. There was already sufficient moisture, which mounted further with moisture-laden winds during the morning hours. So, earth surface winds got condensed and this led to the formation of fog.Soon, the wind speed picked up and its direction changed to north westerly, which was dry, and this led to drop in moisture levels,” said Mahesh Palawat from Skymet. After a consistent drop for three days, the dayti-me temperature rose by 4-5 degrees Celsius on Saturday. It is expected to rise further. The IMD, however, forecasts that the temperatures will still remain below normal with another spell of rain likely on Monday.

With Anzali attack, Indo-Russian plan of $100billion trade takes a hit

MOSCOW: The US-Israeli missile attack on Iran’s Bandar Anzali, a key transit hub on the INSTC linking Mumbai with St Petersburg, is a major blow to the Indo-Russian ambition of boosting bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030 via the crucial corridor, experts said Saturday. The 7,200-kilometre long multi-modal International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) links Mumbai to St Petersburg via Iran, bypassing the Suez Canal, to boost trade between Asia and Europe. The Israeli-American joint strike destroyed the Customs House and other structures in Bandar Anzali on the Caspian Sea coast on March 18, local media reports said.“This route bypassing Suez canal was considered safe, but now due to higher risks caused by the Israeli-American strikes, the rates of insurance and freight will shoot up, which will have a negative impact on Russia and other CIS countries interested in using it,” Professor Renat Karamurzov of Institute of Asia, Africa Studies at the Moscow State University said.“This corridor is extremely important for our bilateral relations with India as it significantly cuts transit time from 25-30 days to seven days from Moscow to Mumbai,” Russian political analyst Sergei Strokan said during a television discussion. According to Russian deputy PM, Vitaly Saveliyev, over 7.5 million tonnes of cargo was transported through the trans-Caspian route by the end of 2025. pti
