Venkatesh Iyer becomes headache for Virat Kohli and RCB ahead of IPL 2026

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) may be the defending champions, but the upcoming IPL 2026 is already bringing fresh selection tension inside the camp, and Venkatesh Iyer will be the main issue.

They will kick off the IPL 2026 campaign against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on March 28 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be aiming for a fresh start after clinching the title after 18 years.

Venkatesh Iyer gives a big team selection problem

Ahead of the season opener, former Indian batter Mohammad Kaif feels the reigning champions could face a big headache while picking their best playing XI. RCB spent Rs 7 crore on Venkatesh Iyer in the IPL 2026 auction, but fitting him into the side may not be easy at all.

Kaif has pointed out that Devdutt Padikkal has been in sensational form since IPL 2025 and has carried that form forward in domestic cricket, which puts RCB in a tough spot. And then the Bengaluru conditions suit batters who like to attack and enjoy pace on the ball.

Mohammad Kaif said in a video posted on his YouTube channel, “The wicket in Bangalore helps those batters who play on the rise, who love shot-making, and who play fast bowling well. Venkatesh likes pace on the ball. There is now competition in the 11s.

I don’t know where they will play him. Devdutt Padikkal has done very well. Talk about Padikkal, Rajat Patidar, Virat Kohli, or the coaches; they have made a great environment there now. They gave roles to players, be it Tim David or Romario Shepherd, and all delivered their best. They are making players now; this is the difference.”

Mohammad Kaif highlights big headache for RCB

The cricket pandit also highlighted the major concern on the RCB side. Josh Hazlewood will miss the early part of IPL 2026, and that could hurt RCB at the start.

The former Indian batter also feels RCB is likely to pick New Zealand fast bowler Jacob Duffy in the playing XI as Josh Hazlewood’s replacement. He believes the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru pitch is not fully flat now and has a bit of spongy bounce, which could help Duffy.

However, Kaif believes that the 2025 IPL winners have shown that they know how to handle such problems. Last season, they surprised many teams by restricting them to below 150 several times, thanks to Suyash Sharma and Krunal Pandya’s stunning bowling.

Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma will have to play bigger

Now, with Liam Livingstone no longer in the squad, RCB may have to depend more on specialist spin options. Kaif feels Pandya and Suyash will now have to carry a bigger load in the spin department for the Rajat Patidar-led side, as playing three specialist spinners could weaken the pace attack.

Kaif added, “Now they will have to go with two spinners. If they play three spinners, they will have to give up on one pacer because you let go of an all-rounder in Livingstone. So, I see only Krunal and Suyash starting. Both had good control and accuracy. Both have become clever bowlers, and they will have a lot of responsibility this time too.”

‘Bring almost 140 mn barrels to global markets’: After Russian, US eases sanctions on Iranian oil

Russian Oil Tanker Bound for China Makes U-Turn to India as Delhi Steps Up Imports Amid Iran War

After Russian crude, the US has now issued a 30-day sanction waiver on Iranian oil, currently at sea, to ease rising concerns about energy supply flows as Middle East conflict continues to boil. US treasury secretary Scott Bessent said that the authorisation applies specifically to Iranian crude and petroleum products that are already in transit. “This temporary, short-term authorization is strictly limited to oil that is already in transit and does not allow new purchases or production,” he stated. The waiver, outlined in a general licence posted on the US Treasury website, covers cargoes loaded between March 20 and extends till April 19. This marks the third instance in roughly two weeks that Washington has relaxed sanctions, following an earlier easing on Russian oil.

Russian Oil Tanker Bound for China Makes U-Turn to India as Delhi Steps Up Imports Amid Iran War

Explaining the move, Bessent said the step is intended to inject additional supply into global markets. He added that at present, the sanctioned “Iranian oil is being hoarded by China on the cheap.”“By temporarily unlocking this existing supply for the world, the United States will quickly bring approximately 140 million barrels of oil to global markets, expanding the amount of worldwide energy and helping to relieve the temporary pressures on supply caused by Iran,” Bessent said in a statement on X. He added, “In essence, we will be using the Iranian barrels against Tehran to keep the price down as we continue Operation Epic Fury.”He had suggested the proposal a day earlier during a Fox Business interview, indicating that sanctions relief was under consideration. The suggestion drew criticism from analysts, who argued the policy could have unintended consequences.“To put it mildly, this is bananas,” Blackstone Compliance Services’ David Tannenbaum told the BBC. “Essentially, we’re allowing Iran to sell oil, which could then be used to fund the war effort.”Bessent, however, rejected that interpretation, emphasising that the waiver is narrowly defined.“Iran will have difficulty accessing any revenue generated and the United States will continue to maintain maximum pressure on Iran and its ability to access the international financial system.” Tehran, meanwhile, said that it does not have extra crude oil to sell to global buyers.“Currently, Iran basically has no surplus crude oil left on the water or for supply in other international markets, and the US treasury secretary’s statement is solely aimed at giving hope to buyers,” Iranian oil ministry spokesman Saman Ghoddoosi wrote on X.

How do you view the criticism against easing sanctions on Iranian oil?

Following joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran, tensions in the region have disrupted a key global oil route, with Iran effectively blocking the Strait of Hormuz, a passage that typically carries about 20% of the world’s oil and gas, alongside continued attacks on energy infrastructure, driving crude prices higher.Donald Trump also suggested that he was considering “winding down” military operations against Iran, even as the United States temporarily eased sanctions on Iranian oil shipments to address a global supply crunch.

CJI bench: Criticism of apex court judgments no affront to judiciary | India News

CJI bench: Criticism of apex court judgments no affront to judiciary

NEW DELHI: PIL petitioner Pankaj Pushkar, who was associated with NCERT in preparing textbooks, informed a bench of CJI Surya Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi that while the court had ordered redaction of the controversial reference to corruption in judiciary, parts in other books that show judiciary in poor light continue to be taught. He produced an NCERT textbook that contained the paragraph: “However, there are also court judgments that people believe work against the best interests of the common person. For example, activists who work on issues concerning the right to shelter and housing for the poor believe that the recent judgments on evictions are a far cry from earlier judgments.”While recent judgments tend to view the slum dweller as an encroacher in the city, earlier judgments (like the 1985 Olga Tellis vs Bombay Municipal Corporation) had tried to protect the livelihoods of slum dwellers,” the paragraph in NCERT textbook read.Reading aloud the paragraph, the CJI-led bench said there is nothing objectionable about this. “This is a viewpoint on the judgment. People have a right to criticise the judgments of the courts.Criticism of judgment does not stand on the same footing as the earlier case (textbook reference to corruption in judiciary)” the CJI said. The bench disposed of thepetition.Solicitor general Tushar Mehta, who happened to be present in the courtroom and who had a difficult time assuaging the judiciary’s hurt feelings because of the now-deleted reference to judicial corruption in class 8 social science textbook, immediately told the court that the Centre has already constituted a panel of eminent jurists — former Supreme Court judge Indu Malhotra and former attorney general K K Venugopal — to review every chapter on judiciary in all school textbooks in consultation with National Judicial Academy chairperson Justice Aniruddha Bose. The Chief Justice of India said, “In a given case, the court was of the view that people have no right over the land, they are encroachers and hence can be evicted. Other people may say that these people have been living on that piece of land for 10-15 years and hence have a right to live there. That is their perception and it is their viewpoint.”“If someone says the court’s view is erroneous, there is nothing wrong in that,” the bench said. Mehta said, “Perception which an uninformed person would gather from the judgment can never be the concern of the judiciary. Uninformed person can have any perception of the judiciary.”

KKR assistant coach leaks Cameron Green’s batting position ahead of IPL 2026

KKR have an abundance of options at the top of their batting order; hence, their biggest challenge would be to figure out what their batting order would look like. They would have options, including former openers, some dynamic overseas batters and lastly, the Australian all-rounder as well.

Kolkata Knight Riders rocked back in the powerplay in 2024, when Phil Salt opened for KKR alongside Sunil Narine. However, Narine himself failed the next season, and KKR could not find an apt replacement for Salt, as QDK and Rahmanullah Gurbaz both failed at the top.

They picked up new players like Finn Allen and Tim Seifert, who are the two new players in the KKR dugout who would play a significant role in 2026. The two Kiwi openers played a massive role for the White Ferns in the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup.

KKR’s assistant coach reveals Cameron Green’s batting position

Though in a major turn of events, the Kolkata Knight Riders are yet to finalize their batting order for the upcoming season of the IPL. Shane Watson, the former Australian all-rounder, was appointed the assistant coach of the KKR side, and he has now made a massive revelation.

Responding to a question about Cameron Green to India Today, he said that the franchise is blessed to have such players who flaunt world-class batting talent. The biggest challenge is to pick the right combination for the team.

“Obviously, with Cameron Green, the quality of cricketer he is as an all-rounder means that wherever he gets an opportunity, he is going to make the most of it,” the former Australian said in the interview.

Shane Watson praises the world-class talent pool of KKR

Kolkata Knight Riders will truly have a major dilemma on their batting front, as they are stuffed with too many batters in the same position. Supposedly, they have Allen, Seifert, Ajinkya Rahane and Sunil Narine, who can all be opening options for them.

“The beauty of this Kolkata Knight Riders squad is the number of incredible, world-class batting options we have. It’s an embarrassment of riches in terms of the calibre of players and figuring out where they all fit in.

“That’s going to be the ultimate challenge for the leaders of this organization—to get those combinations right from game one and make adjustments as the tournament progresses,” Watson said at Eden Gardens in a press conference felicitated by JioStar.

Also, Rovman Powell might be the rescue agent for KKR in the lower order, who could be the power-hitting replacement for Andre Russell. Rinku Singh will have to play a crucial role for them in the upcoming season.

“We’ve got some seriously powerful, world-class players, along with a blend of experience and youthful energy. It’s exciting to see how that plays out over the course of the tournament,” he added.

KKR will struggle in the bowling department

Kolkata Knight Riders are heavily reliant on their overseas players in the batting department; however, they have to be very strategic with their pitch preparation. The pitch at the Eden Gardens often supports a batting-friendly track.

However, the Knight Riders would be struggling in their bowling department, as they are short of options in that department as well. They will not have Mustafizur Rahman and Harshit Rana. Matheesha Pathirana, the Lankan pacer’s inclusion, would also remain a major uncertainty.

In their absence, it will be tough for Kolkata to manage their bowling deck. Varun Chakravarthy’s form has also been a serious concern since the T20 World Cup 2026. They would also not have their fifth bowling option right.

NEW DELHI: Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, batter Shreyas Iyer opened up about a tough phase in his career after suffering a serious spleen injury during the Australia tour. The injury forced him into hospital and led to significant weight loss. “It’s always challenging to come back after an injury. I had lost around 7 kg due to the injury, it was a severe one. Thankfully, I was back in good shape after two months. But gaining those 7 kg back took a lot of effort. I enjoy challenges, and that was one I had to overcome. I’m glad I came through that phase and am back representing my team, and also having represented India in the previous series. I feel proud of myself,” Iyer told reporters in the pre-season press conference.

I am glad I overcame that part of my life, and I am back here proudly representing the team.” Now leading Punjab Kings, Iyer is fully focused on winning the IPL trophy. “Expectations are high, which is fun. I love the challenge. But the important thing is that whenever we step in, we have to win. My eye is on the trophy,” he added. He emphasised team bonding off the field, saying, “This is the period where we live as a family for two months,” and highlighted how spending time together helps performance.Teammate Arshdeep Singh echoed the positive energy, saying, “When you feel the pressure, it is a privilege.”
