'Politics' had suffered trust crisis in past, says Rajnath

Bhubaneswar: Defence minister Rajnath Singh said Tuesday, politics had suffered a crisis of trust in the past and stressed that modesty and credibility should always remain the cornerstone of public life.“Till some time ago, there was a perception that politicians don’t speak the truth or practise what they preach. If someone felt misled, they would say, ‘Are you doing politics with me?’ The word ‘rajneeti’ had lost credibility,” he said. But there were leaders who worked tirelessly to restore faith in politics, the minister added.

'We did a good job': Trump hails US role in Iran war, says Tehran may take 10 years to rebuild

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the ongoing US-Israel military operations against Iran are “proceeding very well,” asserting that the damage inflicted could take at least a decade to rebuild.“The war is proceeding very well… We can’t let them have a nuclear weapon… They would have used it very gladly… We did a good job… Every time you see somebody with no legs, no arms, a face that’s been really so badly damaged, lives destroyed, 95% chance it came right out of Iran,” Trump said, reported ANI.

He further claimed that Iran’s infrastructure has been significantly weakened and suggested that the impact should be made lasting. “They could leave today, and it would take 10 years to rebuild the damage that’s been done. But I think we have to make it a little bit more permanent so that no other President has to go through this,” he added. His vice president JD Vance echoed the administration’s position, citing threats from regional militias. “There have been a lot of militia attacks against our base or our embassy in Iran… There are a lot of terrorists in that region of the world, and we’ve got to eliminate them when we find them,” Vance said,a s quoted by the agency. The remarks come as US and Israel forces continue targeted strikes on Iranian military infrastructure, including missile facilities. The United States central command said on Wednesday that US forces deployed “multiple 5,000-pound deep penetrator munitions” against hardened missile sites along Iran’s coastline near the Strait of Hormuz. In a post on X, the command stated, “Hours ago, U.S. forces successfully employed multiple 5,000-pound deep penetrator munitions on hardened Iranian missile sites along Iran’s coastline near the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian anti-ship cruise missiles in these sites posed a risk to international shipping in the strait.”The strikes are part of ongoing operations jointly launched by the US and Israel on February 28, targeting Iran’s military capabilities amid heightened tensions in the region.

Mumbai court rejects BMC mayor Ritu Tawde’s discharge plea in 2016 teacher assault case, trial to proceed | Mumbai News

BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde (File Photo)

MUMBAI: A sessions court recently rejected the discharge plea of city mayor Ritu Tawde in a case involving the alleged assault of school teachers in 2016. The order paves the way for the accused to stand trial for offences including the use of criminal force to deter public servants from their duties. “The two teachers or victims have categorically named the above applicant to be the person who beat them by hands inside the school. Even other witnesses took the name of the applicant being assaulter on the date of incident. This is more than sufficient to frame charge against the applicant (Tawde),” judge YP Manathkar said. Tawde, BJP Corporator has been serving as mayor since Feb, 2026. The order was pronounced on March 12. The prosecution’s relates to an incident on July 29, 2016 at an Urdu medium municipal school in Shastri Nagar, Vakola, Santacruz (E). The dispute reportedly erupted following the sudden transfer of a teacher, Shahin Khan, to a different facility in BKC. It was alleged that Shahin was unhappy with the transfer. The seven accused of the crime including Tawde allegedly started a quarrel with the Headmistress and other teachers of the on the grounds Shahin was transferred despite suffering from cancer. According to the FIR filed by headmistress Sharifa Momin, the confrontation escalated when the accused used criminal force and slapped two male teachers, Mohd Yakub Rahid and Nadim Ahmed Shaikh.During the proceedings, the defence argued that Tawde’s presence at the site was merely coincidental and that her political status as a BJP corporator was being exploited for publicity. The advocate for the accused also pointed to a 13-day delay in registering the FIR, suggesting the allegations were an afterthought born of political vendetta. The defence further submitted that the essential ingredients of the alleged offences, specifically criminal intent or mens rea, were entirely absent from the record. The prosecution countered these claims by pointing to the statements of seven witnesses including eye witnesses. The prosecution argued that the two teachers who were physically assaulted had specifically named Tawde as the primary aggressor. The prosecution submitted that such conduct within an educational institution, where teachers are expected to set an example for students, must be viewed with the utmost seriousness. The judge observed that the court’s role at this stage is not to conduct a “mini-trial” or weigh evidence for a final conviction, but rather to determine if a prima facie case exists. “The Judge has the power to sift and weigh the evidence, but only for the limited purpose of finding out whether a prima facie case against the accused has been made out.” The judge further noted that the statements provided by the victims and other witnesses directly implicated the applicant. The order clarified that at the stage of framing charges, the court should not examine the reliability or probative value of the statements. “If two views are equally possible and the evidence gives rise to grave suspicion (but not just suspicion), the judge is fully justified in framing the charge,” the order noted.

Shivraj: Congress had no public support for MGNREGA stir

NEW DELHI: Rural development minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday attacked Congress for its opposition to changes in the rural employment guarantee scheme. He reminded them that they failed to organise the agitation demanding restoration of MGNREGA.“Congress declared that it would launch a ‘maha sangram’ and many dates were announced…, but no ‘sangram’ was visible,” Chouhan said, claiming that the protest failed to get public support because of awareness that the new law was better.“We, saw two ‘maha mazdoors’… wearing ‘gamcha’ on their heads, carrying axes on shoulders, but wearing jeans…,” Chouhan said as he showed photos of Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi.Chouhan took on the claim that the VB-GRAMG patternwhere states are required to fund 40% would kill the scheme as states are “cash strapped”. He said states had made necessary provisions.

Govt plans to delink women's quota from delimitation exercise

NEW DELHI: With the Centre seeking the support of Congress for possible amendments to the women’s reservation law, it called on the Modi govt to chair an all-party meeting by PM Narendra Modi to discuss the subject.Govt sources said they have already taken the initiative by reaching out to different opposition parties, including Congress. “It is govt’s prerogative to decide the manner of its agenda,” a senior functionary said on the demand for the meeting regarding the law that provides women 33% reservation in Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The outreach comes amid growing indication that the govt is planning to amend the Women’s Reservation Act to ensure early implementation by possibly delinking it from the delimitation exercise. This would follow the decennial Census, which is currently at an early stage of its implementation.Delimitation is not going to be a quick exercise. There could be resistance from southern states that fear allocation of Lok Sabha seats among states based on their respective populations will see their representation in the lower House shrinking.Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju in response to the latter’s letter seeking a discussion on the “Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam”. Oil price today: Crude relaxes slightly amid Middle East tensions; Brent drops to $102 per barrel

Oil price today: Crude relaxes slightly amid Middle East tensions; Brent drops to $102 per barrel

Crude oil prices showed slight relaxation on Wednesday as tensions continue to boil in the Middle East. Brent crude climbed 3.2% to $103.42 a barrel before slipping $1.15, or 1.11%, to $102.27 a barrel, by 0108 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate crude fell $1.54, or 1.6%, to $94.67. The gains initially marked oil’s second-highest close this year and followed increases in 11 of the past 13 trading sessions. The rise came after fresh attacks on key energy facilities, including Iran’s Majnoon oil field and a gas field in the United Arab Emirates, both of which suspended production. However, the price later eased after reports based on American Petroleum Institute data showing a rise in US crude inventories. Light crude futures rose 2.9% to $96.21 a barrel before easing. The disruption of tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil shipments, has intensified concern over supply, sending ripples through stock and bond markets. Meanwhile, the ongoing Middle East conflict continues to escalate. Israel announced killing Iran’s security chief, Ali Larijani, following Tehran’s overnight attack that set a massive UAE gas field ablaze. Trump also threatened further strikes on Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export hub, while reports indicate that Russia is supplying Iran with satellite imagery and drone technology. In the US, rising oil costs have hit consumers. AAA reported the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline jumped to $3.79 on Tuesday, up from $2.98 before US and Israeli forces launched attacks on February 28. Despite America being a net oil exporter, it still relies on imports of heavier crude for coastal refineries. With Iran limiting tanker movement through the Strait of Hormuz, disruptions persist. In response, the International Energy Agency has pledged to release 400 million barrels from member stockpiles, and the US will contribute 172 million barrels from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve.Watch: Tel Aviv devastated; Iran unleashes cluster fury to avenge Larijani; two dead In India, consumers are concerned over the LPG supply crunch. Oil marketing companies have tightened LPG booking norms as global energy disruptions triggered by the ongoing West Asia conflict continue to affect fuel supply chains in India. Under the revised instructions, LPG distributors in the state were asked not to accept refill bookings from customers who did not order a cylinder for more than nine months unless they completed the mandatory KYC verification. In a press briefing a day earlier, Centre reassured the public that the supply of cooking gas continues without disruption and advised against making panic bookings. However, analysts have cautioned that these measures will only provide short-term relief, while seasonal demand and shifts to more expensive “summer blend” fuels could sustain pressure on prices.

Former CSK batter hints at end of Rishabh Pant’s white-ball career

Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant has been out of touch in the last two seasons of the IPL. Despite being the highest signing of the IPL, the LSG captain has been out of favour within the Indian white-ball setup.

Rishabh Pant shocked all with his stunning rise in the IPL, as he was bought for a massive worth of INR 27 crores by the Lucknow Super Giants, making it the highest ever bid in the history of franchise cricket. He captained Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025, but did not have a successful season in the IPL.

Having played in all 14 games for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2025, he has amassed 269 runs at an average of less than 25; however, he scored a consolation hundred in the final game of the tournament. The 28-year-old has not been part of India’s white-ball setup since 2024.

They are seeing him only as a red-ball player- ex-CSK batter exposes Rishabh Pant

Former CSK batter Subramaniam Badrinath believes that star wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant has gone out of favour within the Indian white-ball setup. He has also called out that this season will be crucial for him to make a turnaround.

Speaking about the same, Rishabh Pant, on his YouTube channel, highlighted Pant’s poor run in the white-ball format and his absence from the Indian team.

“There will be a lot of focus on Rishabh Pant. Let’s not forget, he was the most expensive player in the auction two years back. So there will be massive expectations on him. It is clear that he has gone out of favor within the Indian white-ball setup. They are seeing him only as a red-ball player,” said Subramaniam Badrinath on Rishabh Pant.

The upcoming IPL season is huge for Pant- Subramaniam Badrinath

The former CSK star felt that the upcoming IPL 2026 season would be massive for the Southpaw, as the 28-year-old would be lining up to make a return to the white-ball setup for India. He was part of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Indian squad.

“If he has to create headlines in white-ball cricket, the upcoming IPL season is huge for Pant. Captaincy has seemingly diminished his free-flowing batting,” Badrinath feels captaincy has taken away the flamboyant batting style from Pant.

“He has not been very consistent in the last two IPL seasons. He hasn’t delivered much in white-ball cricket. Except for that one century at the end, he didn’t do anything last season. It was just a face-saving hundred,” he added.

They aren’t a great side- Badrinath exposes LSG ahead of IPL 2026

While LSG struggled in their last IPL season with just 6 wins in 14 games and finished seventh in the points table, Badrinath has not given them many chances to better their results in the upcoming season as well.

“They aren’t a great side. More than them performing well, they have a chance only if other teams mess it up. But they have great overseas batters and a decent bowling lineup as well,” said Badrinath (via the aforementioned source).

He has acknowledged the promising overseas batting strength in their side, which includes batters like Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, Josh Inglis, and Nicholas Pooran, who have also been in great touch.

'Can’t go downstairs to hotel bar': MS Dhoni's 'Shisha man' secret revealed

NEW DELHI: Former Chennai Super Kings player Sam Billings has shared an interesting behind-the-scenes story about MS Dhoni during his time in the IPL. “Dhoni. Has to be… I think just in terms of his captaincy, his aura,” Billings said. “He’s fantastic. In terms of just so incredibly calm. And he’s genuinely cool. You don’t meet many cool people nowadays, really. What a lovely guy, considering how much stardom he has and how much of a superstar. Obviously, a Man United fan, like myself.”He added, “And so we’d watch every Man United game. He can’t leave the hotel, can’t go downstairs to the hotel bar, and he’d get a load of the lads. His room is open, and he has a little ‘Shisha man’ who looks after the Shisha. His sole job is to look after the Shisha.”

‘That’s why I don’t see a role for MS Dhoni’: AB de Villiers

“I feel that in the last few years, his role has purely been about keeping that brand as strong as possible. That’s why I don’t see a role for him batting at eight or nine and not really doing enough, like last season,” De Villiers said, as quoted by news agency PTI.“We know he can be impactful with the bat, but if he’s batting that low and not captaining, it feels like he’s almost just making up for a spot for the wrong reasons. There’s still a place for him, but he needs to bat higher, at least at six, maybe even at five or four at times.”“I do feel Ruturaj and Sanju are the perfect players to take over from MS (Dhoni). My only issue is where MS fits in and if he’s not going to have that big impact batting at 4, 5, 6 sometimes, then rather be out of the squad,” De Villiers said, adding, “Let someone else, that can maybe bowl and bat and have a bigger impact in the game,to come in there and then MS can almost sit on the side as a mentor and still guide the guys.”

Govt obligations to provide for road, education can't be industry: AG

New Delhi: Attorney general R Venkataramani Tuesday told a nine-judge SC bench govt’s sovereign functions, fulfillment of constitutional obligations and implementation of social welfare schemes cannot be corralled under the expansive definition of ‘industry’ framed nearly 50 years ago by a seven-judge Supreme Court bench.Venkataramani told the CJI Surya Kant-led bench that on many occasions in exercise of sovereign functions related to defence or economy or to fulfill constitutional and statutory obligations, such as laying of roads and railway tracks and establishing hospitals, schools, colleges and universities, the govt may undertake certain works. “An approach that mechanically attempts to sever the ‘industrial’ element of a governmental activity from its broader sovereign or welfare objective risks producing results that may also be both doctrinally unsound and practically unworkable,” he said.Additional solicitor general K M Nataraj and senior advocate Shekhar Naphade, appearing for UP and Maharashtra, respectively, said if the activity undertaken by a govt is not rooted in commerce or involved ‘profit earning’, it should not be classified as industry.
