Oil prices today: Crude jumps as Houthis enter Iran war; US boosts troop presence in Middle East

Oil prices surged sharply on Monday, with Brent crude crossing the $110 mark and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbing past $100 a barrel, as the Middle East conflict completed its one month. Markets remained on edge as Houthis enter the Iran war and US plans to extend onground presence in the region, further fueling uncertainty over the trajectory of the war.Around 7 am IST, Brent Crude stood at $116.4 per barrel, up 3.84 or 3.41%, after gaining over 4% in its previous session on Friday. WTI Crude followed the rally, jumping to $103.1, up 3.44 or 3.45%, after recording a gain of 5.5% last week. So far this month, Brent has climbed 59%, marking its steepest monthly rise and exceeding gains seen during the 1990 Gulf War. The surge comes after Iran tightened its noose on the Strait of Hormuz effectively disrupting the strategically crucial route that sees around one-fifth of global oil and gas supplies pass. The conflict, which began on February 28 with US and Israeli strikes on Iran, has expanded across the Middle East. Over the weekend, Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis carried out their first attacks on Israel since the start of the war, raising further concern over key shipping lanes in the Arabian Peninsula and the Red Sea. The US also stepped up its military footprint in the Middle East, with around 3,500 Marines and sailors aboard the USS Tripoli deployed to the region. The move, described as potentially the largest US buildup there in nearly two decades, was confirmed by US Central Command. It comes after almost a month of conflict involving Iran and is being viewed as part of Washington’s effort to expand its operational options in the region.Meanwhile, according to data from Kpler, cited by Reuters, Saudi crude exports redirected from the Strait of Hormuz to the Yanbu port in the Red Sea reached 4.658 million barrels per day last week.JP Morgan analysts said that if exports from Yanbu were disrupted, Saudi oil flows could be forced to shift towards Egypt’s Suez-Mediterranean (SUMED) pipeline to the Mediterranean.Tensions in the region intensified further over the weekend after attacks damaged Oman’s Salalah terminal, despite ongoing attempts to advance ceasefire discussions.Iran has said it is prepared to respond to a US ground offensive, accusing Washington of planning a land attack while simultaneously pursuing negotiations.Meanwhile, Pakistan’s foreign minister Ishaq Dar said that efforts had been discussed on possible ways to achieve an early and lasting end to the conflict, along with potential US-Iran talks in Islamabad.

Ankul Roy takes off a blinder to dismiss Rohit Sharma in IPL 2026

The TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, match no.2 between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). It has been an exciting encounter with the batters having a good time. MI while chasing a target of 221 runs, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton looked in amazing form, and they smacked the bowlers every part of the ground.

During the game, Rohit Sharma, who was looking sensational, in the game was dismissed by a brilliant catch from Ankul Roy. The KKR all-rounder ran backwards and took a diving catch to dismiss the dangerous Rohit Sharma, as the former India captain was back in the pavilion, scoring 78 off 38 balls. The incident occurred in the 11.5 overs, with Vaibhav Arora picking up the wicket.

Rohit Sharma smashes new records

Rohit smashed many records during the IPL match no.2, as he became the first Asian batter to smash 550 sixes in T20s. He brought up his 23-ball 50, which was his quickest in the IPL. The opener now has the most runs against KKR with 1095 runs against the Knights. He surpassed the score of David Warner.

Rohit Sharma looked in deft touch from the start of the innings and gave no chance to the KKR bowlers. The former MI captain has retired from the T20I format; however, his batting did not suggest that he is retired from the shorter format of the game.

Rohit and Rickelton creates havoc

Rohit and Rickelton stitched a partnership of 148, and it was the second-highest opening partnership for the five-time winners. The latter also scored 80 and was unfortunately run out by Ankul Roy.

Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to field first, and KKR were off to a flying start with Finn Allen and Ajinkya Rahane scoring 78 in the power play. The latter scored 67 and gave KKR a good position to score runs. Allen scored 37 off 17 balls, and Cam Green scored 18 off 10 balls.

KKR fell short of 20 runs

Angkrish Raghuvanshi showed his class and scored 51, and Rinku Singh gave the finishing touch for the Knights, scoring 33 off 21 balls. KKR would have felt they were short of 15-20 runs because at one stage, 240 was the projected score on a very good batting surface.

During the game, Ajinkya Rahane also limped off as Rinku Singh, the team’s vice-captain, took over the captaincy. However, Rinku did not have much to do as Rohit and Rickelton were smashing the KKR bowlers, and the skipper was helpless.

NEW DELHI: The opening day of the 2026 FIDE Candidates at the Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort in Paphos, Cyprus, proved that while chess doctrine often predicts a draw when both sides play perfectly, the reality on the board could be far more volatile. Of the eight games across the Open and Women’s categories, only three produced decisive results, all in the Open section, headlined by a tactical masterclass from India’s R Praggnanandhaa. The day’s first blood was drawn by Uzbek 2025 FIDE World Cup winner Javokhir Sindarov, who defeated Russia’s Andrey Esipenko. Elsewhere, in a marathon American derby, Fabiano Caruana overcame Hikaru Nakamura in the longest game of Sunday. However, the spotlight belonged to Chennai-born Praggnanandhaa, who dismantled Dutch No. 1 Anish Giri with clinical precision to signal a formidable start to his campaign.

In the Women’s section, caution was the order of the day as all four games ended in draws. Russian GM Aleksandra Goryachkina came closest to a breakthrough against compatriot Kateryna Lagno before a blunder in the middlegame forced a split point. On the Indian boards, Divya Deshmukh and Rameshbabu Vaishali held their ground with the white pieces against Anna Muzychuk and Bibisara Assaubayeva, respectively, ensuring the Indian contingent remained unbeaten.FIDE Candidates Round 1 Results – March 29, 2026Fabiano Caruana 1-0 Hikaru NakamuraPraggnanandhaa R 1-0 Anish GiriJavokhir Sindarov 1-0 Andrey EsipenkoMatthias Bluebaum 0.5-0.5 Wei YiFIDE Women’s Candidates Round 1 Results – March 29, 2026Divya Deshmukh 0.5-0.5 Anna MuzychukVaishali Rameshbabu 0.5-0.5 Bibisara AssaubayevaAleksandra Goryachkina 0.5-0.5 Kateryna LagnoZhu Jiner 0.5-0.5 Tan ZhongyiGame of The Day: R Praggnanandhaa vs Anish GiriWhile the Nakamura-Caruana clash was the longest of the day, chess purists found more to admire in the high-accuracy battle between Praggnanandhaa and Giri.“With correct 80th move …Kc7!, Hikaru could have actually drawn the game,” veteran GM Pravin Thipsay told TimesofIndia.com. “So, it can no longer be called the best game of the day. It is undoubtedly Praggnamandhaa vs Giri. Accuracy level very high.”Praggnanandhaa opened with the King’s Pawn, meeting Giri’s Sicilian Defence with the aggressive Grand Prix Attack. The 20-year-old Indian displayed deep preparation, sacrificing a pawn on the 10th move before unleashing a decisive manoeuvre on the 11th.“Praggnanandhaa played the Grand Prix attack, and on the 11th move, Praggnanandhaa played interestingly. On the 10th move, Praggnanandhaa sacrificed a pawn, and on the 11th move, he improved his queen,” Thipsay explained.

.

“The best variation by Anish Giri, probably on the 11th move, would have led to roughly equal position, but a slight mistake on the 11th move by Anish enabled Praggnanandhaa to get a slight advantage, which he carried home with a very good technical play from move 12 itself.”Giri’s response, 11…Be6, allowed Praggnanandhaa to capture the white-squared bishop (13. Bxe6), tilting the structural advantage in favour of the Indian.Although the queens were swapped by move 25, the endgame became a nightmare for the Dutchman.

.

The final blow came on the 36th move when Giri played 36…Nf6. Working the a- and b-file pawns might have offered a sturdier defence, but Giri’s uncharacteristic oversight allowed Praggnanandhaa’s rook and h-file pawn to tighten the noose.Giri resigned by move 51.“Praggnanandhaa’s technique in this game was excellent,” Thipsay added.

.

Praggnanandhaa finished the game with a staggering 97.3% accuracy compared to Giri’s 92.5%, proving that at this level, the finest of margins dictate the outcome. The Indian sensation will look to carry this momentum into Monday’s second round, where he faces China’s Wei Yi.FIDE Candidates Round 2 Schedule – March 30, 2026Andrey Esipenko vs Hikaru NakamuraAnish Giri vs Fabiano CaruanaWei Yi vs R PraggnanandhaaJavokhir Sindarov vs Matthias BlübaumFIDE Women’s Candidates Round 2 Schedule – March 30, 2026Anna Muzychuk vs Tan ZhongyiKateryna Lagno vs Zhu JinerBibisara Assaubayeva vs Aleksandra GoryachkinaDivya Deshmukh vs Vaishali Rameshbabu

Casting director Mukesh Chhabra revealed that over a thousand auditions were conducted before Sara Arjun was selected. The intention from the outset was to cast someone entirely new, allowing the character to feel authentic without any baggage of previous roles.Speaking about the process, Mukesh Chhabra shared with Moneycontrol, “Humara initially bohot saara discussion iss film mein chala tha, ki humko jis jagah ki woh ladki dikhani hai, koi aisa fresh approach lena bohot zaroori hai (There were extensive discussions initially about how we needed a very fresh approach for the kind of girl the role required). Initially, we thought of so many big, established actors. Aditya got so many messages from different people. I got messages asking, ‘Why not me?’ Because, of course, he’s Ranveer. Hum log bohot clear the ki poori duniya mein woh fresh ladki lagni chahiye jiska koi background naa ho (We were very clear that she should look like a completely fresh face with no background), so that aisa lage ki uss duniya mein he is going (so that it feels like he is entering a new world).”

Auditions Built Around a Key Scene

The audition process for ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ was designed around a crucial scene from the film. Mukesh Chhabra shared, “If you’ve seen part 2, the scene where she says, ‘Are you a Hindustani agent?’ (Are you an Indian agent?) that was my audition script,” offering insight into how actors were evaluated during the selection process.

Sara Arjun’s audition that sealed the deal

When Sara Arjun auditioned, the response was reportedly immediate. “Jab usne woh scene kiya, immediately I sent it to Aditya on WhatsApp (When she performed the scene, I immediately sent it to Aditya on WhatsApp). He said, ‘Kaun hai yeh?’ (Who is she?) I said she’s the new girl… Initially, we were thinking, ‘Will she look short?’ But then we thought kahani ke saath woh correct lagega (she would fit well with the story)… She gave a kick-ass audition… you’ll know why we took that girl,” he added, highlighting how her performance stood out.

Ajinkya Rahane walks off injured in IPL 2026 match against MI

A massive blow for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the middle of their clash against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, March 29, for the second match of the IPL 2026 season. KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane walked off the ground with a limping leg.

Ajinkya Rahane had to walk off the ground because of an injury scare. In the absence of Rahane, Rinku Singh, the vice-captain of the team, will lead the team. The instance takes place after the conclusion of the 4th over of the second innings.

KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane walked off the field with an injury scare

For the fifth over, Varun Chakaravarthy was about to take his run-up when Ajinkya Rahane lay on his back on the ground. The game had to pause for a while as the physio rushed onto the ground to assist the injured fielder. Manish Pandey came in as the substitute fielder.

Watch the moment here:

It was definitely a major blow for the team, as the team was in a crucial juncture of the match, and Ajinkya Rahane is a seasoned campaigner to lead the team from the front at that moment. Throughout his career, the veteran cricketer has witnessed multiple pressure conditions, and he knows how to tackle those tricky situations.

Rinku Singh is the stand-in skipper in the absence of Ajinkya Rahane

In the absence of Rahane, the duty to take the team forward in the match is on the shoulders of Rinku Singh, who was named as the deputy captain ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Rinku Singh, he gathered some experiences about the leadership duties through some domestic games. It will be a massive moment for him, and will test his mettle as a captain as well for a moment.

After the first innings of the match, the Kolkata Knight Riders were in the driving seat as they secured a massive total of 220 runs on the scoreboard. Ajinkya Rahane batted beautifully along with his opening partner Finn Allen, and the middle-order batters Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Ringku Singh. The half-centuries of Rahane and Raghuvanshi took the team edge past the 200-run mark.

Mumbai Indian batters are ruling at the Wankhede Stadium

On their home soil, where the Mumbai Indians and some of their Indian talents have played a lot of cricket, they got a good start with Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton. As both Sharma and Rickelton scored a half-century each, MI quickly reached the 100-run mark.

As the match progresses, the momentum has lightly titled towards the home team, the Mumbai Indians. The batting part of the Kolkata Knight Riders did their job pretty well, but it was their bowling unit that pushed them on the back foot. During the writing of this article, Vaibhav Arora, Blessing Muzarabani, Kartik Tyagi, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Sunil Narine all conceded at least 11 runs per over in their respective innings.

Indian worker killed in Iranian attack on Kuwait power, desalination plants

Indian worker killed in Iranian attack on Kuwait power, desalination plants

An Iranian strike on a power facility in Kuwait killed an Indian worker and caused damage to infrastructure at the site, the Gulf nation’s electricity ministry said on Monday.“A service building at a power and water desalination plant was attacked as part of the Iranian aggression against the State of Kuwait, resulting in the death of an Indian worker and significant material damage to the building,” ministry spokesperson Fatima Abbas Jawhar Hayat said. The wider conflict in the Gulf has intensified, with airstrikes knocking out electricity in parts of Tehran and nearby areas on Sunday. The disruption came as a senior Iranian official accused the US of preparing for a ground invasion while continuing to signal openness to negotiations.Amid rising tensions, Pakistan said it was willing to facilitate and host “meaningful talks” between Washington and Tehran in an effort to end the month-long US-Israel war with Iran.In Israel, lawmakers were set to vote overnight on the 2026 budget, which includes a sharp increase in defence spending. The proposal would raise the military budget by more than $10 billion, taking it beyond $45 billion.Israel, which has been engaged in conflict with Iran alongside the US since February 28, is also continuing operations against Iran-backed Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.Iran’s energy ministry reported outages across the capital, surrounding regions and Alborz province, attributing the disruptions to strikes on electricity infrastructure. Authorities said efforts were underway to restore supply.US President Donald Trump has previously warned that Iranian power stations could be targeted if Tehran refuses to agree to a peace deal, even as deadlines for negotiations have been repeatedly extended.Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Sunday warned that any US ground operation would be met with force, following the arrival of a US warship carrying an additional 3,500 troops to the region.“The enemy publicly sends messages of negotiation and dialogue while secretly planning a ground attack,” Ghalibaf said in a statement carried by the official IRNA news agency.“Our men are waiting for the arrival of the American soldiers on the ground to set them on fire and punish their regional allies once and for all,” he added. The conflict has now widened into a broader regional crisis. Iran has launched attacks on Gulf states and moved to shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route. The disruption has sent energy markets into turmoil and raised concerns over the global economic outlook.Ghalibaf urged national unity, describing the conflict as being “at its most critical stage.”

IPL 2026: Rohit Sharma scripts history, becomes the first player to…

Rohit Sharma added another remarkable chapter to his illustrious career on Sunday, becoming the first capped player to feature in all 19 editions of the Indian Premier League. The milestone came during Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2026 opener against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium. While Rohit is only the second player overall to appear in all 19 seasons after Virat Kohli, he stands alone in having done so as a capped international throughout.Rohit’s journey began in the inaugural 2008 season with Deccan Chargers, shortly after making his India debut in 2007. In contrast, Kohli had featured in the first IPL season as an uncapped player before making his international debut later that year.Marking the milestone in style, Rohit delivered a stunning performance with the bat. Chasing a daunting 221, he smashed a fluent 78 off 39 balls, leading Mumbai’s charge in a high-scoring contest. In the process, he also brought up his 50th IPL half-century, joining an elite list that includes Kohli, David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan.

PSL controversy erupts! Shaheen Afridi under scanner after shocking rule violation | Cricket News

Pakistan Cricket Board has doubled down on ensuring the smooth conduct of the Pakistan Super League 2026, but a fresh controversy has emerged involving two senior Lahore Qalandars players. Amid ongoing concerns over a possible two-day lockdown due to a fuel shortage in the country, skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi and all-rounder Sikandar Raza have reportedly breached strict security protocols laid out for the tournament. The duo allegedly allowed four individuals to stay inside Raza’s hotel room for more than two hours, in violation of isolation and safety guidelines. The PSL is currently being conducted under heightened security arrangements, with more than 6,000 police personnel deployed alongside AI-based surveillance systems and drone monitoring. Due to security concerns and regional tensions, the tournament has been limited to two venues — Lahore and Karachi — and is being held behind closed doors without spectators. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi had earlier stressed the importance of hosting the league despite the situation. “We don’t know how long the current situation will persist, but hosting the PSL is essential. It is an international brand, and foreign players are involved. Everyone is eager for the PSL to go ahead,” he said. Following the reported breach, Lahore’s Deputy Inspector General of Police Faisal Kamran has formally notified the PCB and PSL authorities through an official letter. The matter is now expected to be investigated, with disciplinary action likely. At the very least, a fine could be imposed, while a match ban remains a possibility. Concerns have also been raised that failure to act could set a poor precedent for other players. The letter further claims that the team’s liaison officer had initially sought permission from the PCB to allow the four visitors into the hotel room, but the request was denied. A similar request from franchise owner Sameen Rana was also rejected. Despite this, Raza allegedly went ahead and allowed the visitors, even after security personnel advised against it. Confirming awareness of the situation, Qalandars’ head of media Umar Farooq said, “We are aware of an incident involving two Lahore Qalandars players, and are in communication with the PSL over the matter.” With the tournament already being conducted under strict security measures, the incident has raised fresh questions around discipline and adherence to protocols within team environments.

Nitish Kumar to resign as MLC today, race for Bihar CM post on | Delhi News

Nitish Kumar to resign as MLC today, race for Bihar CM post on

NEW DELHI: Bihar CM Nitish Kumar’s expected resignation as a member of the legislative council on Monday will set the stage for the emergence of a new era in the state as BJP is likely to take the driver’s seat for the first time in the govt’s affairs after playing second fiddle to him since 2005 when he led NDA to its maiden victory.Nitish was elected to Rajya Sabha on March 16 and the 14-day period during which he has to quit membership of one of legislatures ends Monday. NDA sources said he is likely to quit as CM after taking oath as a member of RS, where his tenure begins from April 10, but political activities for the formation of a govt under a new CM are bound to pick up from Monday. On record, there is no statement from either BJP or JDU on which party will get to keep the top chair, but senior functionaries of both parties have suggested that a BJP nominee will replace Nitish (75). Roles of the two parties will be reversed, with JDU getting the position of deputy chief minister. While Nitish’s son Nishant – who has been hurriedly put through the paces of politics after living a private life all these years to reassure the JDU cadre, feeling anxious at the prospect of their leader’s imminent departure as chief minister – is being seen as a deputy chief minister, there may be more than one person in the position. Samrat Choudhary, one of the two current deputy CMs and the leader of BJP legislature party, is being seen as a front-runner to replace Nitish for reasons having as much to do with his rapid rise within the party since joining it in 2017 as with his emergence as a leading face of Kushwahas, which at over 4.27% of population is second only to Yadavs at over 14.25%. With Yadavs and Kurmis, the third-most numerous backward caste, having had chief ministers from their community since OBCs became the driving force of political churn from 1990, Kushwahas or Koeris have long believed that it is now their turn at the top, a sentiment BJP has tapped by building up the profile of Choudhary, who moved through various parties before arriving in BJP. As a backward face is seen as a natural choice in the state’s OBC-dominated politics, Union minister Nityanand Rai, a dyed-in-the-wool BJP member who too has gro-wn in stature over the years, is also seen as another option. That he is a Yadav, a community aligned to RJD, may not serve him well but, to his supporters, his elevation could be an opportunity for BJP to make fresh overtures to the numerically-powerful caste. With the BJP leadership known for unconventional picks, speculation is likely to intensify till an announcement is made.

Full scale invasion or special ops? Inside Pentagon plan for US boots in Iran

The United States is preparing for a possible expansion of its military operations in Iran, drawing up plans that range from limited, targeted ground raids to a broader deployment of troops, even as the White House publicly maintains that no decision has been taken. The evolving strategy reflects a widening gap between operational readiness on the ground and cautious messaging from Washington, with officials signalling both restraint and the possibility of escalation within the same breath.

Days After US Strike, Iran Says Oil Exports Unaffected As Kharg Island Remains Secure

According to a report by The Washington Post, Pentagon officials have spent weeks developing options for ground operations that would stop short of a full-scale invasion but could involve a combination of Special Operations forces and conventional infantry. These plans are being positioned as contingency measures, offering flexibility to president Donald Trump as the conflict with Iran enters a potentially volatile phase. At the heart of the deliberations is a key strategic question: whether the US can achieve its military and political objectives through air power and limited strikes, or whether it will need to commit troops on the ground, even in a restricted capacity.

What the Pentagon is planning

Officials familiar with the discussions said the military is not currently preparing for a large-scale invasion akin to past conflicts in Iraq or Afghanistan. Instead, the focus is on short-duration, high-impact operations designed to neutralise specific threats.Among the options under consideration are:

  • Targeted raids on Iranian coastal military installations
  • Operations to locate and destroy weapons capable of targeting commercial and military shipping
  • The potential seizure of strategic assets such as Kharg Island, a key Iranian oil export hub in the Persian Gulf

One official indicated that such missions would likely span “weeks, not months,” while another suggested a possible timeline of “a couple of months,” underscoring that any ground engagement would be limited in scope but potentially intense.A former defence official said the plans are extensive and have been studied in detail. “We’ve looked at this. It’s been war-gamed,” the official noted, adding that these are not last-minute preparations but part of a longer strategic assessment, according to the Post.

USS Tripoli deployment signals readiness

Amid these deliberations, the arrival of the USS Tripoli in the Middle East has added to speculation about possible next steps.According to US central command, the vessel, which serves as the flagship for a contingent of around 3,500 Marines and sailors, reached the region on Saturday. The group includes transport and strike aircraft, amphibious assault capabilities and tactical assets.Images released by the command show Seahawk helicopters, Osprey aircraft used for troop transport, and F-35 fighter jets on the ship’s deck, indicating its readiness for a range of missions, including rapid deployment and amphibious operations. The movement of such assets is being viewed as part of a broader effort to position forces for multiple contingencies.

Conflicting signals from Washington

Even as military preparations continue, the administration’s public stance has remained ambiguous.Trump, speaking earlier this month, said: “I’m not putting troops anywhere. If I were, I certainly wouldn’t tell you, but I’m not putting troops.”At the same time, multiple reports have suggested that the administration is considering deploying up to 10,000 additional troops to the Middle East, supplementing forces already stationed across the region.US secretary of state Marco Rubio on Friday reiterated that Washington could meet its objectives without deploying ground forces and emphasised that the conflict is “not going to be a prolonged” one. However, the White House has also issued warnings of escalation. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that if Iran does not scale back its nuclear ambitions and threats, the President is “prepared to unleash hell.” She added, “It’s the job of the Pentagon to make preparations in order to give the Commander in Chief maximum optionality. It does not mean the President has made a decision.”

Strategic targets and operational risks

Kharg Island has emerged as a focal point in military discussions due to its significance in Iran’s oil exports. Capturing or disrupting operations at the island could provide the US with leverage in any future negotiations. However, experts caution that such a move carries substantial risks. The island’s confined geography and Iran’s capability to deploy drones, missiles and artillery could make it difficult to hold.“I just wouldn’t want to be in that small place with Iran’s ability to rain down drones and maybe artillery,” said Michael Eisenstadt, a defence analyst. He suggested that a more viable approach may involve agile operations, with troops conducting quick raids rather than holding territory for extended periods. “Agility is part of your force protection, if they are moving and doing raids, in and out,” he said.Other potential targets include Iranian coastal sites near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route that has seen heightened tensions in recent months.

Mounting risks for US personnel

Any ground engagement would expose US forces to a range of threats, including drone strikes, missile attacks, ground fire and improvised explosive devices.Officials said more than 300 American service members have already been wounded in retaliatory strikes targeting US facilities across at least seven countries in the Middle East. At least 10 of those injuries were reported to be serious. In the past month alone, 13 US troops have been killed in incidents including a plane crash in Iraq, a drone attack in Kuwait and an assault on a base in Saudi Arabia. These developments highlight the potential cost of escalation, even without a formal ground invasion.

What lies ahead

For now, the Pentagon’s plans remain contingent on political approval, with officials emphasising that preparing for multiple scenarios is a standard part of military planning. The current posture suggests that the US is seeking to balance deterrence with restraint – keeping options open without committing to a defined course of action.Whether the situation evolves into limited special operations, a broader troop deployment or a continued reliance on air and naval power will depend on decisions taken in Washington in the coming weeks, as well as Iran’s response on the ground.
