NEW DELHI: The mercury rose to 35.7 degrees Celsius, seven degrees above normal, on Saturday. This was the earliest instance of the temperature surpassing 35 degrees Celsius in the first week of March in at least 15 years, IMD data showed. It was 34.4 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The day temperature is predicted to show a gradual rise and may further touch 37 degrees Celsius by March 11.Last year, the mercury crossed the 35-degree mark in the second week of March at 36.2 degrees Celsius on March 14. In 2024, this happened only in the last week of March, while in 2023, the temperature remained below 35 degrees Celsius throughout March. In 2022, this mark was breached in the third week of the month.“In March 2021, the day temperature surpassed 35 degrees Celsius on March 11. This time, it crossed four days earlier,” said RK Jenamani, senior scientist, IMD.

Clear skies and no active western disturbance lead to rise in mercury

Continuous clear skies have pushed the temperatures. Delhi has been largely experiencing dry weather since the last intense rainfall on Jan 28. Feb brought only two spells of very light showers. With no active western disturbance influencing the region, the city consistently has been recording clear skies, contributing to the rise in mercury.“The day temperature is expected to show a gradual increase. However, a western disturbance would impact the region from March 9 and it may cause rain activity only in hills. Though no rain is expected in the plains, the wind direction may change to easterly on March 10, which may cause a dip in the mercury by one to two degrees in Delhi,” said Jenamani.IMD predicted that the mercury is likely to hover between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius from Sunday to Tuesday. It is predicted to rise to around 37 degrees Celsius by Wednesday. “A rise in maximum temperatures by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius is expected during the next 24 hours and no large change is predicted during the subsequent three days. However, it may rise by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius on March 11 and fall by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius thereafter. The maximum temperatures are likely to be markedly above normal (5.1 degrees Celsius or more) during the next seven days,” said IMD in its bulletin.Apart from days, the nights continue to record temperatures above normal. The minimum temperature settled at 17.4 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal. It may touch 19 degrees Celsius by March 11.Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality worsened to the poor category with an AQI of 246. It was 172 in the ‘moderate’ range the previous day. It is likely to dip to the moderate category on Sunday and Monday and may again deteriorate to poor on Tuesday, according to the Centre’s Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi.

Becoming a commissioned officer gave me purpose.”She said her upbringing in Punjab, with its deep respect for soldiers, and the desire to honour her husband’s legacy strengthened her resolve. “I draw immense strength from my mother.”She recalled how ex-Army chief Gen VP Malik and his wife Dr Ranjana Malik had a key role in her donning the olive green. It was only after her request to Gen Malik, who wrote to govt, that the Army opened the gates for Veer Naaris. “Indian armed forces became the first in the world to take such a step. It reflects the spirit of women’s representation and empowerment.”Her message to women: “Life can push you to unimaginable extremes. But if you believe in yourself, no challenge is insurmountable.”In letter and spiritMajor Jhingan’s journey into the Army began with a simple yet bold act. LUCKNOW: Total number of registered voters in UP, India’s most populous state, is set to surpass the 13-crore mark, with a substantial surge in new applications filed during the 2026 SIR of voter rolls.The figure, however, is 2.4 crore less than what it was on Oct 27, 2025, when SIR was announced. In total, 3.26 crore voters were issued notices for verification during the SIR.

The first set of notices was issued on Jan 14, and hearings began on Jan 21. “As of March 6, 100% of notices had been generated and 93.8%, about 3.06 crore, had been served. Hearings have been completed for 2.8 crore voters, representing 85.8% of the cases, with the remaining hearings scheduled to conclude by March 27,” said the state’s chief electoral officer (CEO) Navdeep Rinwa.The EC expects the revision exercise to be completed on time, paving the way for the publication of the final electoral roll on April 10.Providing details of deletions, the CEO said that 44,952 names had been removed from the rolls till March 6. Of these, 27,118 deletions were due to voter migration, where voters enrolled in a new constituency and their names were removed from the previous one.Another 10,014 deletions were self-initiated through Form 7, while 7,820 deletions resulted from objections filed by others. Among these, 5,153 names were removed due to voter’s death, 1,728 due to shifting of residence, and 932 because of duplicate enrollment.Rinwa added that 2,73,188 Form 7 applications remain pending at various stages of verification and action.Form 8, used for corrections, shifting of address within a constituency, replacement of voter ID cards, or marking persons with disabilities, also saw high engagement. Between Jan 6 and Mar 6, 16.33 lakh Form 8 applications were filed. When counted from Oct 27, 2025, the total Form 8 applications rose to 22.55 lakh.
